Tension mounts in the Ukraine
— Purple Avenger

Oh BTW, there seems to be a revolution going on in the Ukraine. [live updated post at Russia today]

Seems to have something to do with the govt abandoning a EU integration.

Former interior minister declares "revolution".

..."Our plan is clear: It's not a demonstration, it's not a reaction. It's a revolution," said Yuriy Lutsenko, a former interior minister who is now an opposition leader...

61 Well at least the pro-Russians know whom to blame :

Alex Zollkin 02.12.2013 00:58

1. America has over $17 TRILLION National debt.
2. EU has $11.6 TRILLION of debt (92% of GDP)
3, EU has unemployment of 12.5%
4. EU potential for social unrest is world's highest
5. About 120 million live in poverty in the EU
6. Poor Ukraine wants to be part of this fast sinking EU-Titanic ?
7. Ukraine is being divided by the Zionists - Conquer by division.
8. Ukrainians will soon be disillusioned and fall into despair and depression.

Alex Zollkin 02.12.2013 00:54

Ukrainians desperate, brainwashed by Zionist Media, reacting emotionally, not rationally. Hard reality always catches up later. High price to pay for not thinking soberly : 1) Overloaded EU Titanic will add an extra lead block - the UA. 2) Ukrainians wonÂ’t get jobs in Europe. 3) UA will fall in line behind Greece et al. 4) UA will become another bankrupt IMF slave. 5) Under EU legislation, Ukrainian private bank accounts will be frozen, funds seized by the IMF as happened in Greece et al. 6) The new UA Government still have to face up to Russia and lose billions in a border customs blockade. A lose-lose situation.

If the West were strong, and united, and could project the economic and military power necessary to keep the Russian bear from Ukraine's door, I would agree with you. But the EU is circling the bowl, and has succumbed to rampant socialism itself, and the USA under Obama is a weak reed.

So I think the pragmatic choice for Ukraine is to make the best they can of their relationship with Russia, rather than rely on the shaky support they are likely to get from the EU or the USA.

109 So I think the pragmatic choice for Ukraine is to make the best they can of their relationship with Russia, rather than rely on the shaky support they are likely to get from the EU or the USA.

The Russians are a far more reliable ally than the US.  With the Black Sea and Odessa, the Ukraine holds a lot of bargaining power and should be able to get a pretty good deal.  But...

...there is all that past unpleasantness that kinda colors the whole thing, and these people got long memories.

220 AFP - A Pacific islander's bid to become the world's first climate change refugee failed Tuesday, with a New Zealand judge describing his case as "unconvincing".

Lawyers for Ioane Teitiota, 37, argued that New Zealand immigration authorities should not deport him, even though his visa had expired, because rising seas were threatening his low-lying homeland of Kiribati in the central Pacific.

The difficulties Teitiota and his family would encounter in Kiribati -- which consists of more than 30 coral atolls, most only a few metres above sea level -- meant they should be recognised as refugees, the lawyers said.

In a written ruling handed down on Tuesday, High Court judge John Priestley acknowledged that Kiribati was suffering environmental degradation attributable to climate change, including storm surges, flooding and water contamination.

But he said that under the internationally recognised UN Refugee Convention a refugee must fear persecution if they returned to their homeland, a criteria Teitiota did not meet.

"The economic environment of Kiribati might certainly not be as attractive to the applicant and his fellow nationals as the economic environment and prospects of Australia and New Zealand," he said.

"But... his position does not appear to be different from that of any other Kiribati national."

The judge rejected the argument from Teitiota's legal team that he was being "persecuted passively" by the environment because climate change was a threat to him that the Kiribati government was powerless to control.

"Novel and optimistic though these submissions are, they are unconvincing and must fail," Priestley wrote.

Yulia is just as corrupt as the guys, but the difference is she's prettier (it's probably why they arrested her). Don't just assume that Ukraine will be better off under the EU. On my Ukrainian tour, my guide in Poltava (east of Kyiv) did not want the EU in Ukraine because the Germans would buy up country financially (and the Germans and Ukrainians have a nasty history). Wouldn't be surprised if these 'protesters' are hired astroturf. It's a common belief in Ukraine (at least according to my Kyiv guide) that the CIA orchestrated the Orange Revolution. Given the fact the entire country runs along the lines of 1920s Chicago, that would not surprise me here.

311 The question is...why would anyone need to pay them to protest? Wanting EU association makes sense given the history, even if you disagree with it. And the EU hasn't been exactly welcoming to the former Eastern bloc countries, so it's unlikely they'd make the expense and risk pissing off the rat-faced bastard in the Kremlin.

Have you watched Ray Donovan or Homeland on demand yet? *** I'm happy you are enjoying MoS. At your encouragement I looked on Showtime On-Demand for Homeland and couldn't find it. Then, last night, I stumbled into an area called "Bingeworthy TV" and found it there. I watched three episodes last night. So far, so good.

315 Regarding Nicaragua, it appears that continuismo is alive and well there, as Daniel Ortega is pushing through a Constitutional ban on term limits. Soon to be "President for Life" Ortega.

Having been there myself on several occasions, though, I don't see it as Marxism. Ortega (and his very nasty wife) portrays himself as a patriot, socialist, and "christian". He got the RC church on side by banning abortion, under any circumstances. He is less a marxist than he is a corporatist fascist, in the mold of Juan Peron, Franco, or even Anastasio Somoza. I have heard Nicas refer to him as "Somoza light". He has a good relationship with his capitalist cronies.

328 To all the people saying this is Putin's doing.
That has a lot to do with it, but according to my wife's family who live in the Ukraine, it is do to the East/West divide in the country.  The majority of the citizens in the Western part of the Country want the benefits they think the EU free trade will bring.  While those in the Eastern half see it as a way to lock out their factories and manufacturing.

Think North/South during the American Civil War.
