Don't get me started on the race, class and gender bullshit.   My sister is working on her PhD,    and her dissertation is specifically about the value of homecooking traditions and how they're evolving in    the modern age.    She deliberately left the "race, class and gender" aspect     very thin in her dissertation,   keeping aside a good   stack of info to incorporate after the fact, because she KNEW during the    review process    her committee members would demand mroe of a focus on it, regardless of how much she included up front.    Lo and behold, that's what they did.  

 

One of her fellow candidates did her dissertation on    Jewish headcoverings for women.    One of her committee members WOULD NOT sign off on it until she'd incorporated a whole    section on the headdresses of African women.   The two have absolutely nothing in common and relate to each other in no way at all, but dammit, you can't just talk about the Jews in a dissertation about Jewish women!

How does that compare to authentic Mexican?  (Serious question.)

I actually found Honduran food to be a bit devoid of flavor.  Lot's of rice, lots of beans, but limited amounts of spice.  Not to say bad, it was quite tasty.  Although eventually you tire of eggs for dinner.

Although I confess, Plantains in soup is interesting. It looks like a banana but tastes like a potato.  Weird shit.

Also I couldn't even look at a papaya for weeks after I got back.  Every morning was papaya juice for breakfast.  Which, as it turns out is more like blended papaya and sugar.  Almost sickeningly sweet.

Not everything written or studied HAS to lead to gainful employment.   And actually I think she already has a job offer from a cultural center.

 

The point of a lot of research is simply to elucidate for others something that they otherwise didn't know or never really thought about.      There is absolutely nothing wrong with some individuals studying    and researching     niche subjects;    indeed I'd say that's vital to any    culture that values    learning and   reflection.      By the time you've reached the PhD level you've    (usually)    scrubbed out the    hobbyists    and gotten to people who are genuinely interested in    studying a subject in depth and providing the fruits of their studies to the community at large. 

 

It's when every     Tom, Dick and Sally     decides to major in   General Liberal Arts      as an    undergrad,        because they're too lazy or too stupid to major in something more valuable,     and then can't find a job    that you have a problem.    

 

Majoring in     18th Century    Russian Poetry    is fine if you're enthusiastic about 18th Century Russian Poetry and    KNOW     that you can contribute to the world by learning about it and then sharing what you've learned with others to try and make THEM enthusiastic about 18th Century Russian Poetry.       

 

 

It is NOT a good idea to major in 18th Century Russian Poetry because    it's got all the hot    Teaching Assistants    and      the    best-looking     tutors down at the     student center.

Heh it does seem a tad over the top emo, but in my defense I am letting left unsaid with that lament is that far too many people like me likely made the same judgement call.  That I have companions in my error does not expiate me of my culpability or exonerate my lack of will.  I failed to defend with my mind that which I had sworn to defend with my body and sadly the lack of heart I showed on the educational battlefield probably does not speak highly of my courage in the face of random death on the military one had the occasion rose.

My wife gave a rare wink at my feeling of inferiority that I had not gotten to have had my military career, I would have likely retired this month had life gone as planned and said "you're courageous and i think would have made a better NCO in the face of mayhem than I've made."

I reminded her that she has endured battle with a courage I have never been tested with, and that despite the fact I've been shot at I was not comfortable saying I could cope mentally with the rocket and mortar attacks she endured.

I was pondering my failure to finish college when I said it.

I liked McChunk, especially when he'd outduel that asshole Favre in the playoffs, but he should've told everybody to STFU when he got all butthurt over Rush's comments.  And Tiger is even more of a media creation than McSoup.  The USGA loves him because it gets a lot more people interested in golf, even though the majority of them are fucking dumbasses who don't have any respect for the game.  Plus Tiger's a major prick to everybody whether they suck his wang or not; kind of like the JEF.  I'll give Tiger credit for one thing:  He's still playing at a high level after major knee surgery after torquing it with that monster swing (*cough* HGH *cough*) and dialing back his swing by design at least twice.  The Golden Bear's career major record is looking safe though as Eldrick is finding out just what a pain it is to be mentally tough over time.
