— Ace Not enough to win the night, but nearly so.
It also doubled the ratings of a very meh season debut of Game of Thrones.
The GoT season will, I imagine, get better. But George R. R. Martin does so much leisurely set-up it really takes a while for anything interesting to happen. I'm re-reading the third book, reading it more carefully and not just skimming to get to the good parts. I have to say, reading it this way is boring. He really does pad an awful, awful lot. Not only does he have a large number of "Check-In Chapters" -- stuff where nothing of importance happens, but he feels the need to regularly check-in with important characters who aren't doing much -- but even within those chapters he pads like the Dickens. Reading the Jamie chapters, for example-- Jamie obviously loathes Brienne and has loathed her now since the last book. But he'll write paragraphs like this:
What a stupid, ugly cow, Jamie smiled to himself. "You're a stupid, ugly cow," Jamie told her. Then he smiled to himself.
No, really, an entire chapter is like this, Jamie thinking the same thing, then Jamie saying the same thing, and, seriously, Jamie both thinking and saying the same thing in the same paragraph.
But, anyway, it does get better. The TV series is far better than the book in this respect: they cut a lot of the fat. And there is so much in need of cutting.

LITERALLY like Dickens, who was paid by the word. Good grief. I don't even read the full novels at this point; I just skim for dialogue. Otherwise it's like banging my head against a wall of text.
Of course, George RR Martin is a lazyass progressive bastard, so I buy his books secondhand. So I really shouldn't complain.
And to be honest, I think Jamie has a soft spot for Brienne. Not a gooey, mushy thing, but I think he enjoys her company, for all that he tells her what an ugly whore she is.

I get that they're trying to establish these lush, expansive worlds with rich characters, blah, blah, but after a while it just gets BORING. Give me their names, where they're from, and let my head do the rest, kay?
Tolkien managed it in three books with "Lord of the Rings," then expanded upon it all with his other Middle-Earth books. He didn't take the "Silmarillion" and smush it into "Return of the King," even if sometimes it feels like he tried.

Not to belittle The Bible which kicked ass and took names. Hell even my wife sat down and watched the last hour of the finale.

Let's see... we can have David working with the Philistines and then usurping Saul's kingdom; we can have Amnon dorking Tamar quite against her will and then kicking her ass out of the bedroom; we can have the Uriah unpleasantness...
Or we can have everybody knifing each other up in the Northern Kingdom, and then Ahab having to unite everyone to block the Assyrians at Qarqar...
Or we can have the southern kingdom selling out to the Assyrians, and the Damascenes (under Hazael I think) and the Northern Kingdom uniting to bring the south back to heel...

Indeed. But I have to say, the GoT books are very good.
One deep thought by Tyrion I really thought about in book 5. It was his observation that many people choose slavery over death.
In fact, a slave's very existence is the fact that they choose life in chains over death/prison/torture for refusing.
I have thought this for a long time. Unless a people fight for their freedom, all is not well. The right of a people, of a civilization, to exist is paid in blood. Without that price, there is no real social evolution.

As the Obama administration approaches a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline, a national survey finds broad public support for the project. Two-thirds of Americans (66%) favor building the pipeline, which would transport oil from CanadaÂ’s oil sands region through the Midwest to refineries in Texas. Just 23% oppose construction of the pipeline.
Support for the pipeline spans most demographic and partisan groups. Substantial majorities of Republicans (82%) and independents (70%) favor building the Keystone XL pipeline, as do 54% of Democrats. But there is a division among Democrats: 60% of the partyÂ’s conservatives and moderates support building the pipeline, compared with just 42% of liberal Democrats.

If you haven't read books 4 and 5 I'd recommend not doing so, and probably dropping the series altogether. The two combined books took forever to come out and were supposed to be part of a single book that somehow kept expanding - having read the two books I can't see why it kept expanding as large swaths should have been excised by a editor gleefully returning the manuscript as boring having been forced to read through it all.
But I suppose once you reach a certain level of notoriety you can get away with robbing customers blind and the publishers won't give a damn since they know people will buy it.

As far as Arya goes, I have a feeling that she will have some bad ass powers and do some real interesting shit in the near future.

If you're feeling hopeless about your prospects for monogamy, it's reassuring to remember that there are plenty of people in healthy and happy relationships that aren't monogamous.
The very concept of polyamory - engaging in open relationships in which a person can be involved with more than one partner - can seem terrifying to the lifelong monogamist (which most of us are). I met my first open couple about a year ago and it made me nervous in the way meeting steampunk enthusiasts makes me nervous: I didn't understand what made them tick.
In the time since, I've gotten to know several non-monogamous couples, and they not only seem very happy but also extremely devoted to each other.

I actually enjoyed Books 1-3. There was a feeling a real history to Westeros. Plus there was some glimpses at a greater story like the hints to the identity of John Snow's mother.
In Book 4 GRRM started going off tanget and loosing his way with the plot. Book 5 totally goes off the rails and he's obviously flailing and throwing in new throw away plot lines and characters.

@82I read Ender's Game yesterday.
I gotta tell ya, I don't get the hype.
--------------------------------
I suspect that Ender's Game is a little too well known and has left a little too strong of an imprint on the genre in general. In short, it's not the fresh and new book that it was when it first came out. It's kind of like someone seeing "The Usual Suspects" for the first time in 2013. What made it neat and interesting when it first came out oh so many years ago is now tired and overdone. That's not through any fault of the original except, perhaps, that too many people liked it and decided to copy it with their own little twists.
Posted by: junior at April 02, 2013 11:49 AM (UWFpX)

Because the characters really are genuinely interesting. I actually skip over the sex bits because they're annoying and get in the way of the rest of the plot. All of the characters have good and bad qualities, and that's not sugarcoated in any way. It's rare to find that in a fantasy novel, where generally the good characters' positive traits are overwhelmingly more prevalent than their negatives, and vice versa.
Although the truly nasty ones in GoT are just NASTY. Yes, Cersei, I'm looking at you.

@166 ace
Re Wars of the Roses: Yeah, hence my David Frost quip.
Martin has been doing this all very third-hand. There's no there there, in terms of authorial ability to transmit anything coherent and compelling IMO.
I don't mean this in terms of Martin's being Michael Moore-ish, but rather that, his (Martin's) physical bulk notwithstanding, there's almost nothing about him as a life-experienced and legitimately, deeply reflective person to put into the Fire and Ice saga. Yeah, Martin invents "stuff" and worlds and characters, but there's no there there -- not in the way that there was with Tolkien.

==========
What I mean is the Cliff notes version tells me the whole series lacks--and may never reach--the one thing every good story has to have: An satisfying or useful ending.
Nobody watched "The Neverending Story" because it really was neverending.
I see a "Battlestar Galactica" or "Sopranos" or something else weak like that in its future.
I guess it's a combination of all the characters killed off and the "good now bad, good now bad person" he tries to pull off that seems to me leaves no room for a decent ending.
I mean, it's been mentioned here: How you all are slogging through the books for some sort of Deus ex Machina at the end to raise one of the characters up for some sort of grand finale.

"Lockheed called her the Ghostrider. ...
She had no corners, no box shapes to allow radar signals to bounce cleanly off her.
Her high-bypass turbofans were designed to emit a blurry infrared signature at most.
From above, her wings appeared to mimic the shape of a cathedral bell. From in front, they curved oddly toward the ground,... Though she was a masterpiece of electronic technology inside, she usually didn't use her active systems"

Well, it's realistic in that regard.
I'm not one for depressing, pessimistic views of the world in the books I read -- probably because I've got a depressing, pessimistic view of the world I live in, so why compound it? -- but what I find most intriguing about GoT is how characters react to particular challenges. Do they seek revenge, plot murder, turn the other cheek, run away... The characters don't always take the path you expect, and often the path they take changes them profoundly, which tangles up their moral compasses even more. They don't fix their mistakes.
I doubt the story will have a satisfying finale, just b/c I think Georgie Porgie doesn't have a clue how to WRITE a satisfying finale. But I'm interested to see where all of these people end up, and how they get there. The last time I was interested in characters like that was reading "The Belgariad," and GoT is much more diverse and morally challenging.

I don't know when basic understanding of economics disappeared but it is disheartening. Having a lot of overhead doesn't make your product more valuable. Restoring old cars and reselling them for a profit is incredibly difficult. I question the reality of some of the prices they claim to be getting, but it's good tv. >>>Given that the title of the book series is "Song of Ice and Fire," it's always seemed like a sure bet to me that Jon SNOW and Daenerys Targaryen, daughter of DRAGONS, would end up together.
it almost seems so obvious it can't be that simple.
that said, yes, it's probably that.
given that the dragon has three heads (i forget what prophecy that's in) the outstanding question is who is the third head, but that's not much of a question at all. It's Bran, duh.
Until book 5 I've assumed Bran as well (or maybe Tyrion once he decided to track down and serve Danerys, but he doesn't really fit into the "ice and fire" theme). But after ADWD I'm wondering if it's the "surprise survivor" that was revealed (sorry to be vauge, trying to avoid obvious spoilers).

I swear he takes this right out of "Beowulf" and CS Lewis. My favorite parts in the "Narnia" series are often where the characters are sitting down to eat, and you get this wonderful description of all the food they're eating. Of course, Georgie Porgie is less appealing than that, hence the Beowulf thing, which is all "haunch of boar" and "leg of mutton" and the like.

I'd say that by the nature of the story there are multiple protagonists. You really don't know who's going to win in the end, so each character is, essentially, a main character, and each character (of these main characters) undergoes some kind of character arc that causes them to change and grow.
Or, you know, get killed off. That happens a lot.

Tracy Hickman, one half of the original Dragonlance team, released a book a couple of years ago (Eventide - not D&D related in any way, shape, or form) that featured, among other things, a tanner who had been born with no sense of smell. The problems that others have when visiting him are pretty funny. Of course, what gets even better is when he suddenly wakes up one morning and his nose is working properly...

who are you talking about? you mean C? Or do you mean the kid that goes around with Jon Connington claiming to be a descendant of the Targaryens?
If you mean the latter, it's not going to be some pretender just discovered in book 5 of a 7 book series.
If you mean the former, also no. She's a monster.
The latter, and I hope you're correct that he ends up being a pretender - just seemed like Martin might have been going for an alternate "SURPRISE!" since everyone has figured out the R+L=J "twist".

Now that would be a good tale. I'll look it up.

Just to give you a heads up, the book is a collection of short stories that take place over the course of several months, and are strung together to form a complete plot. The book as a whole is written with a focus on humor. The tanner doesn't appear until one of the later stories.
