The Celebritization of The Media (Niedermeyer's Dead Horse)
— Open Blogger

This topic deserves someone such as Ace to do it justice, but I do think it worthy of discussion.

Tom Brokaw says "No thanks" to White House Correspondents Dinner (WHCD) and in the process blames Lindsay Lohan for the decline of, what, the dignity of the event. (?)

Today's journalists are not content to report the story, they want to be part of it. By inviting celebrities to attend the WHCD they get to up the ante and live vicariously through the celebrity of their guests which, this year, includes Nicole Kidman and Ashley "Puffy Face" Judd.

Other journalists argue that Brokaw has it wrong. "It's a fun event" they say. New Yorker editor David Remnick defends "Look at what we publish." he adds "Does it seem like it corrupts us?" (Serious, you guys)

Brokaw asks, "What kind of image do we present to the rest of the country?"

Well, I for one wonder...

Isn't it a little late to be asking that question?

What do you think?

10 I have given up on television altogether. Would cancel cable of I could get ESPN somehow for my 16yo sports fanatic. Cancelled the newspaper last week. Have read it everyday since 1984, when I started giving a damn. I now depend on Vic and the HQ morning link dump.

And a few other assorted sites.

11 Sometimes I wonder: If these people are so painfully oblivious to their bias (either that or they just flat out lie) are we also, one way or another, that delusional (even though by and large we acknowledge that we're biased)? I mean, it just seems that since they're so incredibly jacked up that, since we too are humans, some of that has to have rubbed off on us, or something.

12 I think fuck Brokaw. If there's one thing worse than the cool kids ganging up to give the freshman a wedgie and duct-tape him to the basketball pole, it's the ex-cool-kid who pens a hand-wringing nanny column to the school newspaper. Whatever. If "to hell with all of them" isn't the answer, what is?

23 In the old days, the military academies did not have majors--everybody studied a common curriculum, naturally heavy on military topics. That "ghettoizing" in one's future profession was apparently viewed as too anti-intellectual and limiting, so they introduced majors in the 60s (I believe) to improve the breed. I won't discuss whether it was a right or wrong move, because both arguments have merits, and I don't honestly know, and there is no way there would be a switch back anyway. So I won't say. I will say that I wonder how many pure journalism majors are going to be at that correspondent's dinner tonight.

Brokaw wants his WHCD "pure" just he muckity muck he likes to muck with.

To him Lohan turned it into a circus.

Of course that doesn't mean that in principle the WHCD dinner is bad to him, only in that incarnation.

But to cover his angst he made a point (that perhaps we all agree with).  The very idea of a WHCD separates the press from the commoner in a way that's bad.

Sadly he won't connect the problem of a celebrity president to that.

43 Didn't Brokaw recently link the Boston terrorist attack to US drone strikes?  Some BS about indescriminate killing of civilians or some such.  I realize we are not dealing with the sharpest knive in the block here.  However, when someone is incapable of determining the moral superiority between team A, who goes out of their way to limit collateral damage (including putting their own team at increased risk), and team B, which by design SPECIFICALLY targets non-combatants, I have to conclude that Tom is far too morally compromised for me to give a shit about any opinion he may have.

Yeah, Lindsey Lohan is trashy, but celebrities like George Clooney who belongs to the skank of the month club isn't. Okay, he may not get a new one every month, he may put up with f**king the same woman for 4 months, but he isn't much more stable than Lohan, he just puts a better face on it. If Brokaw were half as intelligent as he thinks he is he would realize that almost all of these successful celebrities are shallow, self indulgent, and have the emotional development of 8 year old children. 95 I have long wondered when the media elite would begin to worry that the product they produce would reflect unfavorably on themselves. The work they do not only represents their own individual character but that of their employer and their profession. Sounds like some of them are worried that all those other journalists are doing harm to the profession, not thinking for a moment that they themselves are also doing harm.  "It's not me, it's them. Those guys are ruining it for all of us ( us meaning me)."

It's kinda comical to see a few develop a conscience because they have noticed that Obama is a megalomaniac wannabe tyrant surrounded by sycophant suck ups, and a few of the suck ups are starting to worry.

Posted by: Lauren" If you have ever been witness to an event that was reported on in the newspaper, or worse yet, had a reporter talk to you and then quote you, you would know that a drunken hobo could do a more accurate job. Years ago our newspaper did an article on a woman that I worked with. It was a fluff piece, nothing controversial. So this reporter interviewed me over the phone, asked me some softball questions about her. The article came out and quoted me as saying things I had never said. It wasn't anything negative or damaging, it was just that I had never said those things. I think the dolt made the stuff up.

Having watched a few of these on C-SPAN,  I can tell you the laughter and humor is shallow and the responses are forced.

I can recall some years ago at one of these during the Bush Administration, someone said something mocking about Clinton, and the camera was on Carville in the audience, and you could read his lips saying  "F*** you!"

They are all a bunch of shallow  and petty children, with no substance behind them.  That's what we're losing to;  shallow, petty children.  This has been contrived and foisted on us.

A fire broke out Saturday evening at the Marathon Detroit refinery in southwest Detroit.

A caller to The Detroit News said an explosion could be heard from the site and black smoke can be seen rising from the refinery.

Shane Pochard, with Marathon Oil's corporate public affairs office, said "a fire started in one of our smaller tanks" on the site located at Interstate 75 and and Fort Street.

Pochard said the refinery's on-site fire crews and "local first responders" from Detroit and area communities where [sic] handling the fire.
