— Ace All copies of the filmed ending were destroyed (well, some say that one copy survived), but this blog now publishes the script for the scene. It was in fact shot, but Kubrick thought better of it and cut it out.
It's a very anti-climactic scene -- by design. Kubrick (the blog tells us) liked Danny and his mom, and wanted a scene at the end to reassure the audience that they were okay and were recovering nicely from their shock. So that's the scene -- they're okay and recovering nicely from their shock.
It's about as interesting as that sounds.
Not a very horror-ish ending. A bit like the very long deflation at the end of Psycho where An Psychiatrist explains to us everything we already pretty much understood about Norman Bates and his Psychological Problems.* Kubrick realized that and cut the scene from all the prints and ordered them destroyed.
I find it interesting that even good directors film these unnecessary scenes-- that they don't realize in the scripting phase they're unnecessary, but only realize it when they see the filmed footage cut together as an unfinished cut. James Cameron filmed a whole unnecessary introduction to Newt's family for Aliens, the family doing some surveying and prospecting work prior to the alien infestation. Apparently his original thinking was that if he doesn't show the audience Newt's family, the audience will not really accept that Newt once had a family.
Only later did he realize the audience was very willing to accept that a little girl must have come from somewhere and thus the family didn't need to be "proven" to have existed to the audience -- Newt could just say she lost her family, and people would be okay with that.
I watch a lot of deleted scenes when I watch DVD's and they almost all are completely unnecessary, often in a "Why would you even think you should film this?" way. But I think that's partly just because I already know the way the movie is "supposed to go" so I'm biased against these Scenes Which Don't Belong. Still, while I (and most other people) would have that bias, there's usually a real pointlessness to deleted scenes. They seem so obviously misconceived it's surprising that anyone, especially solid professionals, spent a few hundred thousand or even a million to film them.
I can't prove this, but I bet you would find a high correlation between mediocre-to-poor movies and a bunch of deleted scenes on the DVD. My theory being, movies with a lot of deleted scenes were never really properly thought out in the scripting phase, and the filmmakers were still trying to "find the story" in the editing bay. Whereas in most movies that really succeed, the story was always present and obvious in the script, and so nothing really needed to be cut for the finished product.
But then, bad movies are always cut down, often to the bone (and often cutting crucial plot-explaining scenes, which is why bad movies tend to make even less sense than they might have), the theory being that if you've got a bad product at least don't keep the audience for too long.
* There's a theory that in a detective novel, the murder represents moral chaos, and the detective becomes the agent who restores moral order to the chaos.
But very often -- so often it's almost de rigeur -- horror intentionally leaves the moral order in chaos; the heroes may survive, but it's not the case that It's All Better Now. In fact this dark outlook is one of the defining characteristics of horror -- even if you survive, you're permanently scarred.
So these Everything's Back to Normal Again endings (including the psychiatrist in Psycho, restoring the moral order by rationally explaining Bates' complexes in a reassuring manner -- that which can be named and categorized can be mastered, a lesson we know from Adam) seem out-of-place in horror movies.
What the hell I am yammering about now? Someone please stop me.
Look, sorry. But when you're writing all day, any random thought you have more than five words to say about becomes a post.
If I think more than five words about hawks, then I'm probably going to write a post about hawks.

The BAE Systems Hawk is a British single-engine, advanced jet trainer aircraft. It first flew in 1974 as the Hawker Siddeley Hawk, and subsequently produced by its successor companies, British Aerospace and BAE Systems, respectively. It has been used in a training capacity and as a low-cost combat aircraft.

I know a little about hawks, Ace.
Unlike Eagles...Hawks don't like to eat something that they don't kill themselves.
Hawks are very smart...and very patient.

Hawks and falcons, despite many similarities, are very different predators.
One of them (I think Hawks) grab their prey and kill it with their talons and/or beaks. The other (Falcons, IIRC) instead use the truly epic speed they can build up on a dive and strike their prey with their feet, normally closed like mini-fists.
Other than that, I got nothin'.

I think the issue of deleted scenes is really dependent on the movie. Especially if the film is based on another work -- especially a book -- then the deleted scenes may contain bits from the book that just couldn't fit into the runtime of the final film, but which provide some backstory that fans of the original work would be expecting and that newcomers to the subject may find unnecessary but interesting. "Lord of the Rings" had to have a bunch of deleted scenes just by the very nature of the project; there was no way you could get the entirety of all three books into three movies, but the fanbase is so devoted that it was almost a requirement that Jackson & Co. film as much of the material as possible and then cut it up in the post-production. You don't NEED the scene in the Houses of Healing between Eowyn and Faramir in "Return of the King," but for fans of the book it's important.
Now, for original films that aren't based on another source, or that draw only loosely from another source, then I think your theory about the number of deleted scenes included on the DVD is absolutely true. When you're writing a free-form script that doesn't have to pay attention to any existing source material then you have the freedom to write what you want, film what you want, and essentially make your movie what you want it to be. A lot of deleted scenes in that situation means one of two things to me:
A) Instead of cutting out the unnecessary stuff when the story was still in the paper and ink script phase, the story editing got done after the much more expensive production phase. That's just sloppy.
OR
B) The studio saw a rough cut of the film, hated it, and demanded the director cut out whole chunks of the story to make the movie into something they preferred.

I tend to think the opposite unless the deleted scene detracts from the story. I don't mind watching the extra stuff that gets cut out if it just adds a little more backstory or exposition. If it's a movie I really like, I want to watch every bit of filming done on it no matter what.

Editing is what makes a movie. It's always better to have too much film to choose from than too little.
The Godfather is the best example of a perfectly edited film. Every scene is necessary. Every scene contributes to story.

That was a great scene, but I think Cameron took it out because the audience would start thinking that most of the alien menace was killed and that there would be less tension. How many aliens were killed in those hallways? Hundreds? Without that scene, you don't know how many of them are crawling in the ceiling panels toward the main characters and it's a lot more scary.

You can't make the films he does for as little as he does without pre-planning. Corman is really an engineer by trade and abhors waste.

A and B were shooting at the same time. Then C and D kicked in when there were depleted.
IIRC, there were 4 guns total with 2 guns each covering two different hallways. A and B guns covered one approach, while C and D guns covered another approach. The aliens first test one hallway and make it to the welded blast doors that were barricaded. They couldn't break through that way. They then attempt to breach another hallway and almost make it with one gun that had only a handful of rounds remaining in it.

But even though the males are smaller, they are fierce hunters...and often attack prey that is bigger than they are.
Male Coopers Hawks can carry off a full-grown chicken.

This reminds me of the riff that comes up so often if you listen to Rifftrax, MST3K, or Cinematic Titanic whenever a character has to travel from one point to another. Bad movies like to pad out their screentime with lots of filler, and there's nothing more filling than a shitload of walking, driving and parking. Need to add half an hour to your film? Then by Jove, Audience Member, you are GOING to watch Polly Protagonist walk from the front door to her car, open the car door, get behind the wheel, close the door, turn the key, pull out of the driveway, and proceed to drive down the road, AND YOU'RE GOING TO LIKE IT.
We don't need to see any of that. It's enough that she was in one place and now she's somewhere else; clearly she traveled there somehow. Provided there's no implication that she broke the laws of space-time to reach her destination -- like, say, leaving her house at sunset and arriving at her destination half an hour away at high noon, which is not unheard of in really, really bad movies -- then we don't need to see the actual travel. Just like we don't need to see evidence of Newt's family to know she had a family. She exists, therefore SOMEONE gave birth to her somehow. You'd have to be a cynical, hard-hearted bastard to see a little girl all alone and surrounded by murderous aliens and say, " How am I supposed to feel any sympathy for her when I don't know anything about her history?"

I'd actually love it if the rifftrax guys would riff Prometheus, since it would give me reason to watch it so I'd know what the hell everyone was talking about when they talk about black goo.
Does anyone else do that, btw? Watch certain movies only because there's a Rifftrak available (or similar comedic voiceover)? I would have never watched "The Happening" without Rifftrax. I'd probably live a much longer, happier life if I'd never watched it at all, but at least the Rifftrak made it bearable.
Seriously. I have never watched a big budget movie with worse acting in my entire life, OMG. And yes, I'm including every single entry in Lindsay Lohan's filmography in that assessment.

If Aliens were a novel, and you read the team coming across a 1 random little girl who had evaded the aliens somehow when everyone else had died; would you not secretly suspect the writer might be putting a doppleganger into the mix? It is common enough a plot device. To accept her fully would you not need her humanized with flashbacks of times past, and inward dialogues? Well when we see Newt on screen she IS a little girl with no flaws, acting like a little girl, looking like a little girl, we feel she is a little girl. All of this can't be known until we SEE Newt be that little girl.
Maybe the theory of bad movies and deleted scenes is the filmmaker cannot well envision how film tells a story and so makes a bad film of what could potentially be a good story, if only given to a filmmaker who knew how to tell it.

More honestly- yes, actually you can. Any hardware store should have enough metal pipe and enough wire that you could at least make a fairly small-bore cannon.

I think Corman's rule is a good one for filmmaker's to keep in mind, though, especially new filmmakers. When what you want to do is make movies, and you need someone to finance them, you need to keep the cost down. You don't ahve to make crap movies, either; you just have to make sure the story is tight as a drum and doesn't have any dead spots. Once you've built up enough cred you can start being a little looser about what you create, and the financial backers will give you some more leeway.

I really wish you would stop. You don't know what you're talking about. There is absolutely no correlation between cut scenes and script quality. There are so many improvised scenes shot and deleted during filming because it costs so much more to reshoot if you're missing some critical logical explanation or "bridge." So much easier to leave it on the cutting-room floor.

I apologize in advance. But when I'm having a lousy day and am feeling superior, you can expect me to quote this back at you. And maybe add "asshat" in there or something. I'll be super juvenile about it. And have bad spelling.
