— Ace This really should have been my slumpbuster: Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to run for president, and he wants either an Amendment to the Constitution to permit this, or he wants to attempt a legal challenge to a clear and unchallengeable statement in the Constitution.
One source said: “Schwarzenegger has been talking openly about working on getting the constitutional rules changed so he can run for president in 2016. He is ready to file legal paperwork to challenge the rules.”...
Columbia University Law School professor Michael Dorf, an expert in constitutional law, said about the Governator’s case in 2007, “The law is very clear, but it’s not 100 percent clear that the courts would enforce that law rather than leave it to the political process.”
There are a few problems with a Schwarzenegger run, apart from the fact that it's flat-out illegal.
There is the little matter of his love-child with his maid (?), for example. Scandals are no longer automatically disqualifying in candidates, but they don't help. There were already unsavory claims about Schwarzenegger's treatment of women before that, too, claims people will probably now be inclined to take more seriously.
Then there's this: His governorship of California is widely adjudged to be either a disappointment or a failure, and such assessments are bipartisan. Tripartisan, actually, when you consider that Libertarians (his natural constituency) also were disappointed in his work as governor.
This old Reason article by Tim Cavanaugh makes the best case possible for Schwarzenegger as a partial success as Governor, but the author is fairly unconvinced himself.
So is there a case for Gov. Schwarzenegger? Here’s my best defense:First, as Abraham Lincoln said of Ulysses Grant, “He fights.” Schwarzenegger’s time in office has been marked by almost constant public struggles with teachers, prison guards, nurses, and walk-on players like the preening Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and the obstructionist Controller John Chiang. Schwarzenegger, a lifelong dealmaker, is nevertheless willing to fire heavy weapons at his opponents....
Schwarzenegger is also willing to say the holiest word in any politician’s vocabulary: no. He has set yearly state records for percentages of bills vetoed, memorably adding an acrostic F-bomb in the memo accompanying his rejection of a Port of San Francisco boondoggle....“He’s helped us more than he’s harmed us, for sure,” says Marcia Fritz, president of the California Foundation for Fiscal Responsibility.
...
Finally, while Schwarzenegger failed to shrink government, he did limit its growth.
These are indeed good things. So I'm personally inclined to put Schwarzenegger in the "disappointment" column, rather than the "failure" one.
But the only way the Constitution would be altered to permit a Schwarzenegger bid were if he were such a towering figure -- the Only Man Capable of Saving America -- that the public would demand it.
But he's not. He was, at best, a somewhat competent governor who picked some fights on spending and had partial success in those fights, and partial failures. He also has no substantial constituency at all, having thwarted the Blue State Government Goons on spending and raises for public employees, and having thwarted conservatives on high-profile lobbying for gay marriage and The Crucial Fight Against Global Warming.
So who, apart from Schwarzenegger, seriously entertains this idea, apart from Michael Bloomberg?
Update: Actually, here's where I am most disappointed:
The hope of Schwarzenegger was that he could leverage his star-power and charisma to become a Reagan-esque promoter of Milton Freeman style economics and general political liberty. That is, that he could mainstream an ideology of liberty which the reactionary leftist media, academic, and government classes are determined to delegitimize and Otherize.
I would give f***-all about his mixed record on specific spending items in California if he managed to do that.
The battle for people's minds is more important than any battle over any budget.
Not only did he definitely not manage to do that, I'm not even sure he tried particularly hard. The only thing I have any memory of him talking about is the Statist imperative to Fight Global Warming.

Here's my executive summary of reaction to the idea of swearing in Presidentinator Ahnold.
No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. NO.
The one that still really rankles me is his attempted ban on ordering ammo from out of state. Expensive legal counsel told him it was unconstitutional and it was going to get slapped down in the courts. He did it anyway. It got slapped down in the courts. An unnecessary and costly piece of left-wing political theater. Nasty piece of work, that man.
Oh, and if you love expensive "green" energy, you'll absolutely adore Ahnold.

He also backed a redistricting/reapportionment arrangement run by a "citizens' panel" that he said would bring fresh new balance to Commiefornia politics.
Instead, the liberals gamed the fuck out of the system and ended up with an arrangement even more unbalanced than before, in their favor. Getting them finally to their goal of a supermajority in the Legislature which lets them raise taxes ad infinitum.

I don't think anybody, even in the tinfoil hat crowds, is thinking about the original reasoning any more - the notion that somehow via English skullduggery, the 34th Baron of Squatney could get installed as President, and then somehow legally transfer the country back over to King George. (Heck, that was pretty much tinfoil hat stuff in the 18th century, too, though maybe some caution was warranted at the time.)

Schwarzenegger is like a mail order bride. The promise of the thing, and the allure of the unknown might be attractive, at first.
But after the bride gets here, and she's 75 lbs. overweight, and has a nasty personality to boot, she kind of loses her appeal.
Schwarzenegger, if he ever entertained notions of being President, should have NEVER gotten himself elected Governor. We already know he's a porker.

I think Obama is a good demonstration of the risks of doing this. No, I'm not going all birther, it's just that given where and how he was raised he is the least American president by a long shot. He does not believe in American exceptionalism, he does not see himself as the leader or representative of all citizens, and he sure as hell got elected using foreign donations (whose impact to his policy decisions we may or may not eventually determine). Shit, let's get Nick Searcy or James Woods or some real conservative actor to run. The only attraction to Arnold as a candidate is his pop-culture appeal and we could get that with someone else that is actually an American and actually a conservative.
The only good thing Arnold did was get the execrable Gray Davis out of office. But that just delayed the inevitable leftist takeover of California.

Any assessment of Schwarzenegger that claims he wasn't a catastrophe for California is disingenuous.
He made no attempt to change the course of the state, which had veered wildly from a libertarian-minded, pro-business, pro-growth state in the 1980s to a shitstorm of feelgood leftist bullshit beginning in the 1990s.
After the recall of Gray Davis California would have been accepting of a change, but Arnold chose another direction, that of the empty gesture and the meaningless cut.

The nice thing about a states' Constitution convention is that it's not a popular vote. Any changes would have to be approved by three quarters of the other states. I don't see any wild leftist bullshit being able to pass that muster.
If the states do call a convention, it's going to be aimed at bringing this country back to the Constitution, not away from it.

Winston Churchill once said that Americans will always do the right thing after they have exhausted all the other options first. That would predict that we are going to run and lose with a whole lot more squishy moderate candidates before we ever run another successful conservative. The only objection to Schwarzenegger is that it is not his turn yet. We have to give Chris Christie his chance to lose. And Jeb Bush. And Richard Lugar. And Peter King. And John Boehner. Usually VPs are picked to appeal to diff sections of the base than the person running for pres, I get that. But I still wish that Reagan had picked a VP better fit to lead the conservative charge, continue his gains after he left office and not hand the torch over to fiscal softies. It feels like we've been flailing ever since, W's strong lead after 9/11 notwithstanding.
We need to be behaving like the dems, hand pick charismatic fiscal cons to groom and get in office like Jarrett did with Obama, ones we know won't turn. Doesn't have to be an actor, but those skills help. There are a few Hollywood conservatives I think could fill in for the Gipper 2.0 in the meantime, but they'd need strong stomachs, the left media will tear their slightest impropriety to shreds. Does James Woods have any sealed divorce records to be concerned about? Any repub candidate will have their health records leaked, I can assure you of that.

Article V amendments still need 3/4 ratification by State Legislatures. I envision only one amendment meeting the 2/3rds concurrence requirement at an Article V convention and 3/4 ratification.
Amendment 28
This Constitution of the United States is hereby abolished and its union dissolved; all member states are hereby free and independent sovereign nations. All land belonging to the United States of America is hereby returned to the state in which it resides.
That's the only thing I think you can get 3/4ers of the states to agree to at this point.

"I see the Rethugs more as Braxton Bragg..."
Yeah?
Welp, I see the democraps as like their incompetent blind eyed cretin Jeff Davis. Inflexible, rigid, dogmatic, partisan upheld incompetent friends (like your friend Bragg) over the main objections of the rest of the army and elected officials.

No hints of it on his Twitter timeline. The only new release he's talked about was Gravity which he refuses to see. He also told Andy Levy to get the sand out of his vagina because Andy liked it

Some ancient astronaut theorists say the phrase was originally:
"I could care less but I can't be bothered"
Thus, "I could care less . . ." is sort of right.
Also acceptable: "I couldn't care less"

By that time Schwarzenegger had pretty much given up and was just enjoying the Governor's mansion because his wife liked being First Lady.
When the voters of California rejected all his propositions exactly the same way that the California Legislature rejected all his proposals to return to sanity, Schwarzenegger gave up the obviously futile task of trying to fix what is wrong with California. After that, I don't think Schwarzenegger really paid much attention to the responsibilities of his job.

Close enough for government work.
Mea culpa. I just helped a UPS driver get unstuck from a five ton rock and still a little winded. Plus Myers Rum and coke.
And all the blood had left your head.

I think she's probably closer to the Meghan McDimwit wing of the Republican Party.
I'll bet that her co-star Sasha Alexander might be conservative, though. (Almost certainly not, but she's so hot I can't help pretending.)

In particular, he grasps that there is no constitutional provision, however clear and explicit, that the Supreme Court will follow if it doesn't want to.
On the other hand, he has a pretty immense ego to think that the Supreme Court would want to violate the Constitution *for him.*
He's male, white, middle-aged, successful, and flagrantly (and so far as is known exclusively) heterosexual.
(When you get right down to it, that was the Democratic case against Romney.)
