The French got their own snooping scandal
— Purple Avenger

Nothing to see here, just move along.

France's foreign intelligence service intercepts computer and telephone data on a vast scale, like the controversial US Prism programme, according to the French daily Le Monde.

Enjoy your holiday. I'm doing yard work laying waste to stuff with a chain saw...its a good way to vent frustrations. Noisy, stuff being rended violently, and crashing down. Good times baby.

5 I lust after a good chain saw.

The last big storms dropped all sorts of large carbon storage vessels across our roads. One of these days the intrepid and hard-working municipal workers won't get to road clearing in their customary several days after a tree comes down, so I think a chain saw is a wise purchase.

I recommend both an electric for small work close to the house, and a larger one (at least 18") for "field" work.  I have been very happy with my 16" Husqvarna which I use for light duty in the rose garden!

21 I had a chain saw for about 2 weeks.  I was cutting down a pine tree which was about 20" in diameter.  As it started to fall it pinched the saw so that I couldn't pull it out.  When the tree was about horizontal the saw fell out on the ground and the tree fell on it and squashed it.

The last time I needed trees cut I called a professional.

The trees around here are quite large, so it might be tough to move the trunks off the road. But the smaller stuff that comes down? Easy to clear with a chain saw.

31 As it started to fall it pinched the saw so that I couldn't pull it out.

Eyeball the tree and figure which way it wants to fall.  Cut deep notch on THAT side.  Then undermine the integrity of the remaining wood keeping it  up from the OTHER side.  Then, as it falls, it won't pinch the blade.

When we had our rash  of   hurricanes  down here  back in   '03 and '04, most folks  cleared their trees on their own,  depending on the size. There are  lots of really big   trees around  here (3-4 ft dia.) that don't lend themselves to that, tho'.

I was pruning my pear tree a few years ago, and while standing on the top step of a six-foot stepladder, I lost my balance. The ladder flew out from under me, and before I could think, I was falling backwards. The ladder landed sideways, and I fell across it, back first. If it had been aluminium, I might have broken my back; however, it was wood and it shattered, breaking my fall. I walked away without even a bruise. My mother would have said that my guardian angel was looking after me; I have no better explanation. And yes, I am *much* more careful on ladders these days.

77 I just saw a great comment on the Market Ticker forum: The most troubling aspect of this whole thing is it seems the bureaucracy is out of control. NSA is finding people who wire 15k to Al Qaeda who then use the money to probably purchase weapons from the CIA. Meanwhile the OCC lets banks launder drug money while the FBI conducts a multibillion dollar war on drugs. The ATF helps out the drug war by selling weapons to the drug cartels. The FDA doesn't allow reimportation of prescription drugs from Canada for safety reasons but allows active ingredients for generics to be manufactured and imported from corrupt third world countries with well known safety problems without oversight. Lets not even get into the SEC or green energy or the white elephant in the middle of the room, Medicare. We have a space agency, NASA incapable of putting a man back into orbit for the next decade without outsourcing to Russia. An IRS with targeted audits of groups with specific political viewpoints. Seemingly every weather event is now FEMA eligible and a disaster. Its too easy to kick the fucking Postal Service while its becoming irrelevant, I'll skip them but go ahead and keep raising stamp prices and see how that works out for you.

PGiS, I heartily agree. We now live in a police state. And since the Repubs are gung-ho on 'reducing crime' with the Dems following the same playbook so as to not look 'soft', there we are.

I know a lot of people here ain't real keen on libertarians, but they are just about the only ones raising a ruckus over the encroaching police state.

Unfortunately, they have overgrown the power line, so every time the wind blows, the electricity goes off for the day. I've looked at cutting them down, but they all lean into the power line, so that's where they will fall when cut.

Posted by: Chainsaw Barry at July 04, 2013 08:28 AM (0It32)

81 Chain saws... a subject dear to my heart, I cut (kill) trees for a living in western Washington. I use a Husqvarna 385, 36" bar most of the time, up to 60" bar on huge timber, some of the Sitka Spruce can be 100 years old or less and still 7 or 8 feet in diameter, huge growth rings. For years cutting trees killed far more workers than even Alaskan crab fishing. Witnessed more than a few, things happen so quick if you mis-calculate and pretty unforgiving.

Amazes me that most people have no idea of one of the most important factors, a razor sharp chain . A poor cutting chain wears you out and is dangerous to boot. We use chisel bit chains, they're razor sharp and have to be specially ground. I doubt you can even find them in most parts of the country, they seem to be a West Coast only thing. If you have to push on the saw to get it to cut, it ain't sharp, and long "spaghetti strings" should be what the chips resemble, not "bug dust". A crappy chain will also bind and not cut straight.

87 That 18" Homelite I bought is only about $130 and comes with a spare chain.

Use it once on any real tree and and it pays for itself compared to tree service prices.

For ordinary trimming of modest size branches I use a Sawzall with a demolition or pruning blade.

89 #83, Not specifically, I don't know the numbers of the smaller models. I would go with either a Stihl or a Husqvarna because of the quality and ease of getting parts and the genera knowledgebility of the dealers, I think they could probably steer you right for an appropriate size for home use. They tend to be taught fairly thoroughly by factory representatives . These two makes are constantly being improved and are pretty durable. The quality is light years ahead of what it was even 20 years ago. It almost makes me cry remembering what I used in the '60s weight and quality wise alone.

99 Another thing about chain saws, buy lots of fuel filters and spark plugs, they're cheap and easy to change, saves a lot of cussing from cranking and hard starting. Spark plugs are sometimes bad brand new, and fuel filters get bad from moisture and the tiniest bit of dust, they should be changed regularly, I hate cranking on saws.

They canceled fireworks on the beach because of all the gang violence. Instead, they would schedule them right before dawn thinking that most thugs were in bed by then. That's why it pisses me off when people moan about so many people in prison. Longer sentences made the difference between night and day in CA and reduced the murder rate by 75%.

129 Sometimes the trees fall perfectly. Withing inches of where you want them to fall. And sometimes they go the opposite way and ruin something. I had the electric company come by and trim a tree back. Went out and told them take the whole thing down and you wont have to keep coming back. They already had it mangled from years of trimming. (I didn't plant the fucker). Long story short, I tried cutting it down and it fell into their telephone pole, leaning it approximately a foot. Neighbor calls electric company within 4 seconds because they were out in ten minutes with a bill for $1000 to straighten the poll. I said when you straighten that poll, I'll pay the bill. They never came back.

That sounds (a pun!) like a much more reasonable plan. Still, you need to check tide tables, and 35 miles is a bit of a toodle, so I expect you will have to start very early. At any rate, I thought the idea of paddling all the way around was...., well...., I figured I would read about you in the paper.

141 Where I live, ethanol-free gas has been purged even from the boat marinas.

The last time I called a marina, the proprietor screamed back at me down the phone line, "NO GODDAMNIT WE DO NOT HAVE ETHANOL-FREE GAS!!!"

He then calmed down and apologized and said that he desperately wants to stock it, but simply can't get it any longer thanks to the state of Commiefornia's "green" mandates. Huge damage to small engines is being caused by gasoline with ethanol, he said. The overhaul shop at the marina is backlogged six months. Great way to spend the summer, staring at your boat which won't move.

One of those completely bipartisan policy disasters that we can't blame entirely on technically illiterate liberals. Plenty of corn-belt GOP Congressmen love them some ethanol mandate.

I've figured out the deal on converting generator engines to propane. None of the ethanol hassle and the advantage of easier storage. Using it in a chainsaw? Um, I would have to think about safely routing the hose. Plus lugging the tank around would be a bother.

What I can't figure out is what these guys are using for fuel.

I knew it was just a matter of time before a government somewhere in the USSA violated that one. The ninth and tenth have been ass raped by statists from day one - so the third was the only one that as far as I know had not been violated in modern times.

Can't attest to how they do it now since its been 25 years since I drove there. People would see that you needed in and slow to let you in, or you just got over without drama. Moved back east and it was like they took offense if you got over, and if they noticed you wanted over, they'd speed up like you were trying to take something from them. The one thing I missed about driving in Cali. Didn't miss the 90 people at every 4 way stop sign, or the 4 second stop lights to get on the freeway.

154 On cutting a large tree, especially pine:   Cut a V notch in the tree in the direction you want it to fall (also taking into account any wind).  Then, on the opposite side from the notch, cut in a downward direction towards the point of the notch.  Worst case scenario is that the tree jumps in the direction you    wanted it to fall, but normally it falls in the direction you want it.
