— CAC Going through some older posts, I was a bit shocked to see just how many submissions the original version of this had. Even the late Andrew Breitbart dropped by to submit a few, one of which I almost picked (Devo's debut album).
So, have at it. Name the best. And no best-ofs, we are talking straight studio albums. Best-ofs are glorified mix-tapes. Live albums are ok. Because. Anyway, I really expanded my collection off the 2011 version, and would love to do that some more. After a bit I'll check to see if one really stands out and update the post. My submission below the fold.

I saw Arthur Lee play live in S.F. in 1987. I had a real fake ID (CA driver's license) so I could get in whilst 19. Awesome show. I have several Love albums on vinyl.

Not to undercut the current thread...this is always a fun topic since everyone gets a say and the taunts and arguments become ever more brutal as the alcohol takes hold...but you might want to take a look at the last time the subject came up. Since tinyurl never works for me, scroll through the archives to the May 6th, 2011 ONT in case you want to mock the comments there as well, and see if the submorons that posted comments then have changed their tune, so to speak, in the intervening time.
The rules then are pretty much the same as CAC has laid out now, particularly the ban on 'greatest hits' albums. And no Barbra Streisand under penalty of death.

Presumably we wont hate on bands that needed 2 LPs to document their Opus.
If thats the case, then I hasten to add Quadrophenia and London Calling.
also once during a period of callow 80's youth when such things were called for, I listened to Fear of Music after eating some very wild and flavorful mushrooms in Santa Cruz with some mullet metalheads, all but me who thought anything softer than Motorhead or Pantera was for wusses.
I knew and liked the talking heads in addition to being more or less a metal mullet myself, sans mullet, but I'd never listened to Fear of Music before that day.
By the time we listened all the way through the album everyone in the room was weeping quietly to themselves & sold on the talking heads. You could have heard a pin drop the whole time the record played.

It's kind of unfair to ask us to pick just one album because there are perfect albums in nearly every genre. Just seeing what others have chosen makes me think, yeah that too!
Grateful Dead's American Beauty, X's Los Angeles, Several Beatle's Albums, are all contenders. In 1984, I went to 26 concerts that included: Billy Idol, The Cure, The Pointer Sisters, The Romantics(Wang Chung was the warmup band), The Thompson Twins, General Public, Frankie Goes to Hollywood( Depeche Mode was the warmup), George Thorogood, Tina Turner, Commander Cody, Marshall Tucker, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Santana. It was a very good year.

The game is no bad tracks. Punch the Clock has some killer tunes, play Pills and Soap when your really pissed at our ruling elite, but the album as a whole is about half meh songs.
And This Year's Model is very very strong, but it does have You Belong to Me
and Hand in Hand, which gives it about a 20% meh quotient.

there are links between what weÂ’ve been seeing in Libya, Egypt and now Algeria. There were two reasons for the Benghazi attack:
1) Revenge for the death of Al-Libi, whose brother is a senior member of the LIFG and appealed to Dr. Zawahiri for retribution.
2) The release of the Blind Sheik. In fact, the sub-unit that falls under Ansar Al Sharia responsible for carrying out the attack. is called “The Imprisoned Omar Abdul Rahman Brigade.”
Additionally, the demonstration that led to the US embassy in Cairo being overrun were chanting for this guy’s release. It was never about some stupid youtube video. Interestingly enough, you’ll find a direct link between the guys responsible for that demonstration (Sheiks Shehato, Ashoush and Dr. Zawahiri’s younger brother Muhammad)and the Benghazi attack. In fact, Shehato and Ashoush helped establish what is known as the “Nasir City” AQ cell, which sent guys to Benghazi to help with the attack. All to get the Blind Sheik out of jail and get vengeance for Al Libi’s death by UAV this past June. Also look up the name Muhammad Jamal al Kashef (a.k.a. Abu Ahmed, because he also has extensive links to Libyan jihadist in addition to his role in the Benghazi attack and links to Egypt. I say this because some of those involved in the Algeria hostage incident were from Libya and Egypt. I doubt this is a coincidence. If anything, I’d say this is all part of a coordinated effort. What this tells us is 2013 will likely be a year of great bloodshed. We have the policy of appeasement to thank for that one, because after all, weakness is a provocative act itself…

In Rainbows and OK Computer--I can listen to both of those albums over and over. Incidentally, I saw Radiohead live last April and they were outstanding. I'd go see them again.

Here's my "Most Famous Person What I Ever Met" story...I sat next to Pat Boone at the Sidney Rodeo in Sidney Iowa, I was maybe eight at the time (this would have been the early 70's), he signed the program for me. BUT! they were much better than the Mustang II's anemic 2 bbl 5.0, and starting in '83 (when they got the Holley 4bbl) they were faster than the GM ponycars (but ironically not as fast as the turbo Dodges. The Daytona IROC R/T had a 2.2 turbo IV that put out 225 HP in a lighter body), and had much more potential for improvement than they had before.

This weekend I'm going to review the C7 Corvette
My verdict is "meh". My first impression when I saw the car was the same when I see the debut of the "hot new actress". She may look flashy, but I've seen her many times before. There's nothing really new or unique there.
The C6 look was getting long in the tooth and outdated, but if they're going to do a new generation and use the Sting Ray name, they should have gone the retro look of the original Sting Ray coupe. The Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro's successes all derive from the unique look.
Not so with the new Vette. It's a Viper and Ferrari in front, a Nissan GTR on the sides, and a Camaro in the ass. A retro SR coupe would have been a head turner and a home run

Yeah, I like "Goat's Head Soup" a lot, probably more than "Exile". "Black and Blue" was the last great LP they did. After that the suck starts. "Some Girls" is ok, but nothing great. They should have stopped. Richards is still good, but nothing, nothing like he was in the early to mid 70's. Either he lost it when he gave up smack and hit the booze, or, not having a stellar 2nd guitarist to push him, anymore.

I...have no idea...(and I don't know about pulling quickly on the tape to get it to go back up into the cartridge either). (My first car, a 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham, had a deluxe 8 track/4 track Quadrophonic tape player...only had one quad tape and played the shit out of it...but I'll be damned if I can remember what it was. (seriously...can't remember. Hey, it was a long time ago.)

Crap, remember when the damn tape got hopelessly entangled in the player? You'd be listening, suddenly you'd hear it slow down and warp and then you'd have to perform delicate surgery to try to untangle the mess without ripping the tape. From time to time, I'd get so frustrated that I would just rip the damn thing out. I bought Van Morrison's Moondance like 3 times because of that.

The tapes often tightened or jammed at the feeding end of the spool and cause the tape to drag or stop. By slipping a pencil under the tape, you could loosen the tape so it would play at something approximating the correct speed for about 10 minutes.
The matchbook was to slip under the tape to keep it from double tracking. Often took many adjustments to get it right

'Seeker's Mask' was published in extremely limited numbers by Hypatia Press. 500 total copies - the maroon ones. Then there is the even more limited edition in this ivory marbled scheme to be part of a matched set of her books. All these books are signed by Hodgell and DeCamp.
And when Hypatia finally folded its doors and since Pat was still an unknown writer. She did the right thing to pay the bills. And we all had to wait and re-read what was published until Meisha-Merlin decided to pick her up and publish. But Meisha-Merlin was yet another small house that folded and Baen finally picked Pat up. So now we are finally seeing the whole story arc.

Felix on the tail, not Snoopy (VF-31), but the vacuum tube radio was in a Strike bird (VX-23 now) at Pax River. VF-84 is now VF-103; 84 was decommed and 103 took their insignia and the bones. Should say it's VFA-103 now, they fly the F/A-18F. VF-41 is history now, though.

My nominations...Ten Years After: A Space in Time and A Question of Balance by The Moody Blues. Also very fond of Machine Head by Deep Purple.
For 'modern' jazz I'd have to go with Back on the Case by Acoustic Alchemy--not a bad tune on the whole album (but there may have been some of those killer mushrooms involved when I first heard it which might have swayed my fondness for it--or not).

The lead singer (Lzzy Hale), if it were biologically possible, is the offspring of Pat Bennetar and Joan Jett. She rocks, she can play, she's beautiful and she rocks. Love the whole album of that band. Crank it up to "11".

Rush: Moving Pictures. 2112 is amazing as well, and all the 'classic' era albums are quality. But Moving Pictures has their best known song (Tom Sawyer), their best AOR friendly song (Red Barchetta), and what was, until their most recent album, their last truly prog-rock epic experimentation in "The Camera Eye."
Iron Maiden: "The Number of the Beast." Though "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" is close behind, IMHO, even though it's outside the 'unholy trilogy' of epic Maiden Albums. Still Number is Maiden at the peak of their powers, prog-black-metal with galloping guitars, pulsating drums, and perhaps the most gifted (yet untrained!) singer in Metal.
AC/DC: Back in Black. The ultimate make-or-break album.It only misses these lists because you hear EVERY song from it on the radio. But that you do, means what?
Soundgarden: "Superunknown." 10 from Pearl Jam and Nirvana's Nevermind may get more love. But for pure songcraft, none of the Seattle bands could touch Soundgarden. Double album and every song on it their own signature style. Black Sabbath crawl combined with psychedelic twists and Cornell's wail cutting through it all.

Metallica: Master of Puppets. Back when thrash was prog-metal turned to 11, you could actually find songcraft in the riffs. Every song on this album is amazing, and Cliff Burton is still the only Metallica bassist who didn't suck.
U2: Achtung Baby. Joshua Tree is amazing as well (I was a fan back to the Under a Blood Red Sky EP, actually, and saw them in Denver once. BEST SHOW EVER). But it actually has a couple of tracks I would 'almost' call filler. Every song on Achtung Baby screams "We've reinvented ourselves, and you didn't think we could." Mocking their own presumed presumptuousness, and the consumer society in general while never sounding trite.

But really, live albums are a cheat, because the best ones are Greatest Hits albums in (poor) disguise.
Positively criminal U2 hasn't done a 'proper' live album. (I'm not counting Rattle & Hum, which was a lot of novelties.) Their concert vids are amazing. But their album collection is not complete without a double-disc treatment of their carrier in concert, where they're really so much better than in the studio anyway.

#1 Studio - Aerosmith: Rocks. Released in 1976 when Aerosmith were still, you know, a hard rock band, it's perfect from start to finish. And unlike their pussified post-comeback stuff, the lone ballad "Home Tonight" flat kicks ass.
#1 live album - Peter Frampton: Frampton Comes Alive. Also released in 1976, also perfect from start to finish. IMO, still holds up after all these years.
