The Grievances and Disappointments of the New Aristocrats (A Continuing Series)
— Ace

Stace McCain has a post about a guy who now works for Chris Hughes, a FaceBook billionaire who bought the bastion of White Skin Privilege The New Republic, complaining that Jeff Bezos' purchase of The Washington Post means "the other guys had won..."

I invite you to read this with the following lens in mind: Consider this particular idiot's interest in maintaining the Privileges and Immunities of the New Class to which he belongs, and his anger at parvenue interlopers like Jeff Bezos threatening those Privileges and Immunities. The New Class is very proud of its central role in the drama called The American Political and Social Discussion. This is their status; this is their value.

And if outsiders claim to be worthy of playing roles in this scripted play? Well, that means less spotlight time for the New Class.

And look at Jeff Bezos. Why, you can practically smell the ink still drying on Bezos' money. I mean, rrrreally.

Is it so terrible that a self-made billionaire now owns the Post rather than a clan of heiresses and nepots? Yes it is, from his point of view, as those heiresses and nepots actually flatter his Class by pretending themselves to be on the same plane (that is, those of the actual higher class condescend to the New Class) whereas, well, who knows about this Bezos character with his weird thoughts about "profitable enterprises" and "capitalistic zeal."

And why no grousing about his own billionaire employer? Wellll... I'd imagine that Chris Huges, being a longtime and major Democratic fundraiser and supporter, has sufficiently made his bones, as they'd say in LCN, and thereby established and proven his fidelity to the New Class this wannabe aristocratic twit (sp?) belongs to.

And, Obama's on Leno tonight. He may be the first member of the media to ask Obama about terrorism, and maybe even the new Benghazi revelations.

And, Open Thread.

And, The Middle Class.

7 btw, ace, since I seem to have this thread to myself right now, I would like to see a post from your perspective on the rehab of GOP vs. bury it and start over for a new conservative/small "L" libertarian party.  I'm not asking you to stake a position, but to go over some of the pros and cons from your standpoint.  The sidebar article a couple days ago about how the GOP leadership has never been truly allied with the conservative base was a bit of an eye-opener for me, and I think your take would be interesting.

Little hope is better than no hope.  Gawd, even a paleoliberal like Jennings would have put some pressure on him by now (I respected PJ a lot--he took the job of news seriously at least).  I was really hoping that Tapper might become THE network anchor for ABC, then there would be one actual reporter featured on non-Fox TV.

Open Thread? Okay, you want a blatant example of media bias, one that's irrefutable?

Remember when Bush nominated Negroponte, and all the Latin American gringo Satan crap was recirculated? Compare and contrast that with the media silence over Eric Holder's in-your-face sale of a pardon to fugitive Marc Rich. Total fucking media blackout, and now we're stuck with a criminal Attorney General. One who makes John Mitchell look like St. Thomas Aquinas.

Living in the land of the new rich, it's funny how quickly men and women go from worn jeans and tee-shirts to Chanel and Armani. And how quickly their tastes evolve from cold pizza to molecular gastronomy. Public schools were good enough for them, but not for their offspring. And it is almost as cutthroat here in the Seattle area to get into the private schools as it is in NYC.

I always found it humorous to watch the transformation. And to see time and time again it played out that money does not buy you class.

Eh,

Sounds like you're in the boat with the rest of us then.

Torn between the desire to tell the political class to shove it up their asses, and the realization that it would mean at least a generation of democrat/progressive control.

I'm not sure that's a "lack of deep thought" as much as it's the complexity of the reality on the ground.

I'd note this though:

Even if we have just half a generation more of democrat control, I fear there's no future left for us to preserve.

46 My greatest political triumph of the last three years was at a hipster party in San Francisco in 2010, where a young woman, between sips of microbrewed pilzner, said something like "I just don't understand what this Tea Party even is. I mean, I know I'm supposed to hate them, but I can't even get what they're trying to do." So I proceeded to explain to her that the Tea Party was a class rebellion -- individualists and workers and self-sufficient people trying to throw off the yoke of the cultural and political aristocracy, who oppress the middle class with derision and taxation. Well, it sounded better than that at the time - - so good, in fact, that she "grokked" my weltangshauung, and I saw the light go on in her soul. When she wavered and expressed mystification about how the "squares" could become the rebels and vice versa, I sealed the deal by explaining to her that many of the folks in the Tea Party ARE former hippies and beats, just now older and wiser; and that the oppressors are the grandchildren of the old-school blue-bloods, they just now wear the mantle of "social justice," which is a euphemism for totalitarianism. By party's end, she was a full convert.

49 But letÂ’s not kid ourselves here: The company that made him one of the richest men in the world has had a less than benign impact on our nation. It has devastated the publishing industry, from the big presses to the small booksellers. It has exacerbated the growth of the low-wage economy, to the point where the president feels the need to celebrate an increase in warehouse jobs that will pay barely more than minimum wage. . . . Competition is such a bitch. The nerve.

52 tsrblke, I do think it is about location. And insecurity too. In the 90s when people were first getting flat out rich here because of Microsoft they still were mostly casual--the banks around here were told not to judge customers by how they were dressed for example. But, it seems like in the last 10 years or so status has become more and more important. You have to be in the right clothes, belong to the right club, eat at the right restaurants, contribute to the right charities. And, of course be a Democrat. Flat out, no exceptions there.

Speaking of Matt Damon, somehow I got it into my head that the "rich" people in his new flick, Elysium, are all hypocritical Greens who have followed things to through to their natural course - i.e. the Greens living in their non-sustainable party atmosphere while the rest of the world slaves away in a devestated hell hole largely of the Greens' making.

Yes, I know that's not how the movie is intended to be seen.  But I can't shake that view no matter how hard I try.

81 You know, at this point I'm actually feeling a little respect for Sydney Leathers. She has the self awareness to recognize that she's tawdry.

Not only does Weiner lack that self-awareness, he got outsmarted by her. She sent him a message on FB AFTER his scandal, knowing he couldn't resist. She played him perfectly and kept all the evidence. She'll probably have a six figure income this year, and I bet she's never had a year like that, even with the prostitution.

Don't get me wrong: I wouldn't sleep with her more than once, and not at my place. But the chick in the masturbation video actually comes out of this scandal looking like your garden-variety kid who's been damaged by a lack of relationship with her father.

Weiner and Huma? They look like incurable psychopaths.

103 The Washington Post is a terrible paper. It always was bad in that it was reliably leftist editorially. But now that bias has spread out to cover all of Section A over the years. The Sports Section is a bright spot, but it's had better days. The Business Section was always a sick joke. If you'd have followed it for 20 years, you'd still have little idea of the business doings of and around DC based on it. The Metro Section is often the best part of the paper, because here is where the amazing cast of miscreants and clowns who populate local governments in and around DC show up for their investigations, indictments, various scandals. But of course, every single one of those is brought to office thanks in no small part to a wise, civic-minded WaPo endorsement.

110 OT, but I heard on ESPN Radio today that Illinois actually taxes visiting pro athletes for the time they spend playing within state lines.  They specifically mentioned that A-Rod will pay the state $22,000 for playing against the White Sox this week.  They also mentioned that it was only athletes, so for example even a loaded coach like Urban Meyer would not get taxed for coaching the Buckeyes if they played at Illinois.

What I'm curious about is does it apply to *all* pro athletes?  I don't care about A-Fraud or other big-leaguers, but most minor league baseball --and hockey-- players are pretty much paycheck-to-paycheck, so it's kinda chintzy for Illinois to do this.  But that's what happens when the beast of government has devoured its stores and starts looking around before even considering tamping down the appetite.

Pays no income tax on that. Goes to CA for a month, makes $10K while there, he pays 10% CA state income tax. The theory being of course that while in CA for that month you use CA roads, CA police protection, CA water/sewer, etc so you contribute some tax dollars to the state. And CA could be Kansas or Oklahoma just as easily.
