#5 joncelli - Actually, I think Ace rather nailed this a long time ago, when he described Obamacare as the perfect scheme of more or less "privatized socialism."  That was a brilliant observation.  Obamacare socializes medicine while keeping it nominally in the hands of private actors.  This way, the government can command the outcomes it wants but is insulated from the complaints when people start dying.  Much of the cost is also not directly on the government books, either, so liberals can maintain the charade that this is not going to cost taxpayers anything while millions more poeple get coverage. 

 

In this way, liberals were able to achieve a rather radical reform of the health care system while avoiding the charge that the government is totally taking over, which they know people do not want. 

 

It was a very, very, very, very, very clever scheme.  Not that a lot of progressives still do not want single payer; they do.  But they don't have the votes for it in Congress and never did, and never will.

You see, the point most people miss is the fact that everyone in the U.S., citizens, illegal aliens, rich, poor, black, white, whatever all are given world-class healthcare.  No one is ever denied.

 

A small portion of the cost for the healthiest of society is paid for privately.  The bulk of the expense is paid for by taxes.  Already.  As in right now, the federal government is spending enough to pay for all the healthcare for the poorest and sickest utilizing the most expensive avenues of caregiving.

 

The only possible way to spend more money would be to include the insurance companies into the large chunk of the pie that they aren't into presently.  Therefore - ObamaCare.

 

Now, insurance companies will be able to add their piece and get a cut of the action.

My reality, as far as Obamacare goes, was that the GOP stood together and did NOT vote for it.  Obamacare is solely owned by Democrats.

joncelli - actually, Ace was the first to express this idea, at least that I read.  It is the only thing that makes sense.  This was an extremely well thought out scheme to radically change our health care system without appearing to radically change it; to shift the burden of paying for health care for poor and moderate income people to the insurers and the states so the true cost would not show on the federal government's books; and to get a lot of middle class people hooked on subsidies for their health insurance while assuring them they could keep their doctor and we would not end up like Britain or Canada with rationed care and long wait times.

 

Ace went on to talk about how this new system is going to turn us all into nudges and tattletales, turning us against our co-workers and friends and neighbors to get them to stop smoking and exercise and eat better, give up their guns, etc.  Once everyone sees how much their own insurance premiums go up because so many unhealthy people now have to be covered, people are going to see that it is in their self-interest to hound other people to be healthier.  So we won't need another big bureaucracy to make people eat better and exercise.

Defunding Obamacare, I think, is a mistake. The Democrats have a millstone on their necks. Let it sink them. From what we all know about Obamacare it is going to be a stunning disaster. Look at the history of the Whig Party, specifically the mechanics of its dissolution. You're right: such things don't happen all at once, and what happened to the Whig Party is the closest American historical example I can find of what Ace calls the preference cascade. The problem, as I see it, is that when such things as a major party split do happen, they're usually the result of a triggering event that sets things in motion. Perhaps the vote on nation-killing immigration 'reform' legislation in the House will be that triggering event should it gain passage--which could only happen as the result of Republican support. The Democrats claim they have 40-50 Republican votes already. I'm not sure of the numbers but think they could conceivably pull it off.

I think there has to be a solution to this issue.

I am not for Obamacare or any government involvement. But insurance companies have milked this for years. It is a key issue that many people hate and Democrats stoked and leveraged that hate to pass healthcare.

If for whatever reason, I want to pay a child's health insurance until they aree 26- why not? Especially in this economy. Kids can't get jobs or you are trying to help them get on their feet financially. I certainly don't want them to go without it.

I have a 30-year-old nephew who has not ever had a fulltime, year-round job that provides health insurance.  He does seasonal contract work and then travels the rest of the year.  He has had an individual health policy since he was 22 and has had no trouble paying for it.  He is a libertarian, too, hates Obama and all liberals. ;-)

 

Amazingly, my other nephew has also been able to find an affordable individual policy even though he has type II diabetes and a history of drug addiction.  He is 27. 

 

So I kinda have a hard time believing all these sob stories of millions of young people going without health insurance.

As a Californian I can attest to the Republicans preventing the Democrats from enacting their worst ideas and preventing Californians from feeling the worst of the effects. This is no longer the case. California is cutting programs, Healthy Families is getting cut. It was a big benefit for Mexicans and included "nutrition assistance." More free food above and beyond WIC. It will be fun to watch California Progressives squirm as Democrats choose between illegals and unions, while trying to convince businesses not to leave. Hell Jerry Brown wants to expand oil, oil! This time no republicans to get in the way. What should be different at the national level is the strategy. I doubt it raises your premium much.  Even if it does, it will be less than a separate premium, especially under Obamacare.  A parent who wants to teach their kid responsibility would simply have the kid pay the difference.  Just like most parents do regarding auto insurance.

The thing is, under Obamacare you will not be able to buy a cheap low-cost catastrophic plan.  Those have been outlawed.  A young, healthy 25 yr old, or  30 yr old (whatever) will have to purchase a full service plan under Obamacare.  That's why I say let Obamacare kick in.  The Dems rely on the stupid youth vote - let those young people feel the sting of this shit sandwich.

Suggesting that this payment coverage assessment is unique to the ACA and that it is a contrived means of preventing certain types of medical treatments from being provided is simply more fear-mongering hyperbole from an ideological group that lacks a compelling argument based on reality. The closest example that you will find to a true death panel would be the bean counters in the private health insurance industry who deny coverage for potentially life-saving treatments under the guise that these expensive procedures are "experimental".
