The Largest Simulcast of a TV Drama in History
— rdbrewer

[Open thread below.]

It's today, Dr. Who's 50th anniversary special, Day of the Doctor, starring Matt Smith, David Tenant, and John Hurt. It will also be shown simultaneously in 3-D in over 1500 theaters all over the world.

Moffat, along with Matt Smith and Jenna Colman, attended the official Doctor Who anniversary celebration at London's ExCel on Friday.

The three-day event, which is being attended by 8,000 fans a day, features appearances from Doctor Who stars from all eras of the series.

Smith told fans during a question and answer session that Steven Moffat's anniversary story "added to the mythology" of Doctor Who.

Billie Piper is returning as Rose.

It starts at 2:30 p.m. Eastern with a live pre-show. The Day of the Doctor starts at 2:50. You might check the schedule where you are, since it's all Dr. Who all day on BBCA. The bad guys are the Zygons . . .

and the Daleks.

. . . er, the Daleks.

Or something like that. And, FYI, the episode The Name of the Doctor starts at 1:30 Eastern. I missed this last season, so I don't know if they really reveal Dr. Who's name, but this is the episode where John Hurt's version of the doctor was introduced.

You can see the original Zygon episode, Terror of the Zygons, with Tom Baker here.

Added: According to commenter "29Victor," they sneaked-in a mini-webisode called The Night of the Doctor. Commenter "Brass" found it. It's about seven minutes long. Here it is.

2 Is this an open thread? I need instructions! OT from Dr. Who, Tom Maguire has a great idea. Even though Obama is trying to hide insurance cost increases from the public just prior to the election next fall, he points out the state info is going to be publicly available and the RNC could put it on a website http://bit.ly/I7RBWv An "enterprising attack dog" might even publicize the info so that, you know, people would find out about it.

4 I just started watching Dr. Who about a month ago, and I have been working my way through both the classic sites and the new, and am halfway done with Tennant's last season. Would love to be part of the festivities, but alas with three kids and no cable, that ain't happening.

5 They snuck in a mini webisode called "The Night Of The Doctor." It's a "War Doctor" origin story. It's on YouTube, I'd link it but I'm on my phone and the "link" button don't work.

15 Right now they are showing on BBCA the Silver episode.  And these Cybermen are more like the Borg.  Amusement park in space, Parmerly Station.  Plus getting vibes of Phule's Company meets March Up Country.  And what kind of daff idea did the Doctor have to bring kids along.  But on a plus side, Warwick Davis is in this one.

And I have a ticket to watch in 3D in the theatre on Monday Day of the Doctor.

22 I love Tom Baker, and think of him as THE Dr. Who. Guess i been watching that damn show as long as i can remember because my mom watched it. My dad used to get me Jellybabies all the time when he was in parts that actually had the real deal. This made me a rock star at Loscon in the early eighties, when i would pass them out because i always had a box of them in my pocket.

Oh dear. Now i have revealed what a hopeless nerd i am and for how long... ok what can i do to redeem myself? Ok how bout this... when i was going to conventions, i usually went with Phillip K Dick's 5th wife and his only son, who was my friend in school....nope? still hopeless.... i think i am digging myself in deeper. Perhaps i should just shut up now, and not mention my absurdly long multicoloured scarf.

34 Nice joke, but Davros shouldn't be in the episode. In the second part of The Stolen Earth, it is mentioned that his ship was eaten by the Nightmare child in the first year of the Time War. Every indication is that the anniversary episode takes place on the last day of the Time War, probably shortly before Rassilon bridges to Earth (The End of Time) with the Master's help (since in that episode, the timelords discuss the Doctor's acquisition of the weapon he uses to end the war).

Both Star Trek and Dr. Who are under the same publisher for comics right now. A while back they did a crossover with the Matt Smith Doctor and the Ponds on board the Enterprise D. The villains were the combined Borg and Cybermen.

But I like Karen Gillan and Jenna-Louise Coleman more

Matt Smith will be replaced by Peter Capaldi after the Christmas Special.

Capaldi is 55 years old, quite a bit older than Tennant or Smith. Since The Doctor and River Song have a little thing going and Alex Kingston is 50 herself, I guess they didn't want her to look like a cougar

42 I started watching Doctor Who on Netflix a few months ago, beginning with The Ninth Doctor. Made it all the way to the end of the current series, and then went back to watch them again. Got a lot more out of it with the threads that are woven through months and even years of series. I have learned that Doctor Who aficionados are called Whovians. I submit Who-ters. At any rate, I AM STOKED!!! And I have BBC America, so things are getting exciting at my house. Decided not to see it in 3D in a theater, since I'd probably just barf.

I think Tennant's regeneration was the saddest in the series. I suppose Baker's (Tom, not Colin) would have been if I hadn't started with Davison. As for the SCOAMF reference, I find the repeated references to Obama's plan to fix the global economy, whatever the writers' intent at the time, are a special sort of condemnation now.

118 I'm honestly really glad that McGann got another "official" outing and a regeneration scene. While the FOX movie blew monkey jizz, I thought McGann as the Doctor had real potential with competent writers.

That said...if you count John Hurt as a regeneration...then that means that the next Doctor, Peter Capaldi, will be the 13th Doctor...

...which, according to well-known continuity, would make him the last. 12 regenerations, 13 bodies...and then you're through. The only way the Master ever survived was by learning how to take over the bodies of other people, killing what remained of them in the process. Unless Doc is gonna start doing that, they're going to have a problem.

And frankly, I'd like to see him come back. While I didn't appreciate him as much after first seeing him...compared to Tennant the dipshit and Smith the fairly decent, he was far closer to my idea of the classic Doctor.

And I really, really, really, really hate Rose.  So that's a definite reason not to watch.

164 Just a thought, but the Baker cameo could explain the "watcher" from the 4th to 5th regeneration. When the watcher merges with the 4th, the 4th got sent on a separate timeline involving being the curator and at the end of that regeneration became the watcher who then merged with the 4th to complete that little loop. 170 Coupla things:

The assistant wearing glasses with the big scarf?  The big scarf?  Obviously, it was meant to look like Tom Baker's, but I wonder if it was the original.

And that little scene she had where the Zygon version of herself passed her the inhaler?  First, I thought she got the inhaler back earlier.  Second, why did the Zygon do that?  Was that after they shot the thingy on the ceiling and decided to cooperate?   (And what was the thingy on the ceiling?)

But that inhaler.  The fact she was wearing the Baker scarf makes me think she was somehow the Baker Dr. Who in disguise and that the inhaler was a disguised sonic screwdriver.  ???  That or the scarf reference was just an afterthought.

I thought Matt Smith and David Tenant worked great together.  I hope they team up again.

I have a question about the last conversation we see the Doctor (Matt Smith) have. Did anyone else get the impression from the dialogue that it was a future regeneration he was speaking to?
