The Leftist New York Times Just Can't Give Up Its Woobie
— Ace

They claim, again, that the dark rightwing chatter of Dallas '63 was somehow a major influence on the communist and Soviet defector Lee Harvey Oswald.

Watch how the New York Times argues not that an important constituency of the Democratic Party -- socialists and the socialist-curious left -- must reflect upon its responsibility for Kennedy's murder, but that the right must.

[T]he tension between past and present has unleashed a wave of citywide self-reflection a half-century later in a distinctly American place that is part Dallas Cowboys, part Texas excess and part urban melting pot, where the public school students come from homes where 70 languages are spoken. Painful, embarrassing memories of the angry anti-Washington culture that flourished here 50 years ago — and now seems a permanent part of the national mood — have resurfaced, confronting Dallasites daily.

An angry anti-Washington culture killed Kennedy?

Well, indeed, communists were anti-Washington (before Washington became a Socialist Beacon) and were usually pretty angry.

But that's not what they mean, is it?

Blocks from Dealey Plaza, the windows of restaurants and the lobbies of hotels are plastered with posters reading “Love” — a nonprofit group’s campaign, using artwork by schoolchildren and others, to counter the City of Hate label given Dallas after the assassination. As the city prepares for the biggest event it has ever held to mark the assassination on Friday — led by Mayor Michael S. Rawlings, a committee of civic leaders raised about $3 million in private donations for the ceremony — the focus has been on the city’s legacy as much as Kennedy’s.

“I’ve learned a lot about my city through this,” Mr. Rawlings said. “The world is peering into Dallas and saying, What’s that place all about right now, 50 years later? We’ve grown a lot, and we’ve changed a lot. The main story about Dallas is it took that punch and turned that tragedy into motivation to go to the next level.”

In the early 1960s, a small but vocal subset of the Dallas power structure turned the political climate toxic, inciting a right-wing hysteria that led to attacks on visiting public figures. In the years and months before Kennedy was assassinated, Lyndon B. Johnson; his wife, Lady Bird; and Adlai E. Stevenson, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, were jostled and spat upon in Dallas by angry mobs. In sermons, rallies, newspapers and radio broadcasts, the cityÂ’s richest oil baron, a Republican congressman, a Baptist pastor and others, including the local John Birch Society, filled Dallas with an angry McCarthyesque paranoia.

The immediate reaction of many in Dallas to the news that Kennedy had been shot was not only shock but also a sickening sense of recognition. Moments after hearing about the shooting, the wife of the Methodist bishop told Tom J. Simmons, an editor at The Dallas Morning News, “You might have known it would be Dallas.”

Uh, yes, that might have been the initial erroneous reaction from the left, who is always sure that every evil is perpetrated by a rightwinger, but what has their erroneous first reaction to do with what actually happened?

Here's where they link up the rightwing H8 to Oswald:

...

Lee Harvey Oswald was a Marxist and not a product of right-wing Dallas. But because the anti-Kennedy tenor came not so much from radical outcasts but from parts of mainstream Dallas, some say the anger seemed to come with the cityÂ’s informal blessing.

This is precisely what they did with Palin and Jared Loughner-- they attempt to claim that a man who is obviously not influenced by Palin at all is somehow indirectly influenced by "anti-government" chatter, and then he kills people.

So, you know: You're not permitted to be anti-government. An entire strain of American politics, sometimes dominant, always present, is thus claimed by the New York Times to be tantamount to murder, and hence forbidden.

How convenient for them.

99 Fun fact. Oswald wanted to shoot Richard Nixon a year earlier. He tried to get out of his apartment, and his wife kept him locked in, until Nixon was out of town. Oswald was crazy, insane, demented. The fact he was a communist - symp was just icing on the cake. Again and again, since 1963, the asswipes in the Media have made something of this that it wasn't. This was the lifetime avocation of Kennedy bootlicker Ted Sorenson, whose purpose in life ever after the death of his liege lord, John Kennedy, was to burnish his name and his paltry achievements as President, forever. The whole concept of "Camelot" was dreamed up by Jackie and the crew AFTER Johnny was dead, as a means of keeping his popularity alive. Frankly, for the Right, the assasination of JFK was about the worst possible outcome. It elevated LBJ to the Presidency, and brought about all the signature legislation of the Great Society, and allowed the expansion of the war in Viet Nam.

I had that happen while working in the yard a couple of years ago.  Ouch.  Quite painful.  Also, never, ever go through airport security wearing a metal underwire bra.  You'll get the hands all over your boobs treatment.  A friend of mind actually had a TSA goonette slide her hands under my friend's sweater and bra and literally feel her bare boobs.

Yes, padded push-up underwire.  I have heard 'ettes recount the stabby thing, but it has never happened to me.  All I can say is, Calvin Klein.  It's not cheap, but it's exceedingly well-made.  Of course, I don't actually put a lot of stress on my bras, mostly wear them for extra boobage in my clothes.  Never even owned one until I was in my 50s and sensed an impending lessening of the perky factor.

Including _Profiles in Courage_, which won a Pulitzer, which Kennedy graciously accepted on his own behalf without mentioning that his family had employed a ghostwriter on his behalf. That's pretty fucking telling regarding Kennedy character.

yeah the NYT is reaching. However I don't think the general idea that concentrated far-right or far-left rhetoric in a certain area can foster a polarized, unstable environment in general. See Communist/Nazi street fights in Weimar Germany.

also the idea that certain Tea Party anti-government rhetoric is conspiratorial in a way that mirrors "Kennedy, Communist-controlled destroyer of America" rhetoric isn't really disputable.  Not that it has to mean anything, parties tend to engage in more over-the-top rhetoric when they're out of power.

248 Joe Kennedy Sr. may or may not have made a lot of money bootlegging, but he did make hundreds of millions selling short on the Stock Market after the 1929 crash. So when the country as a whole was in a tough economic time, Joe Kennedy and people like him made sure it was driven down even harder by selling stocks short and driving down the NYSE even more. What a prince. Then he bought a lot of real estate. Did you know the Kennedy's owned the Merchandise Mart in Chicago? I still think the family has part interest in it. If you want to read a really good book on Joe Kennedy, find "The Founding Father" by Richard Whalen. Whalen was a writer for the WSJ years ago, and wrote the book in the '60s. He was fair with Joe and the book is so well written it reads like a novel. But Joe was a real unpleasant man, in many, many ways. Like the time Lyndon Johnson had come to the Kennedy home for lunch (when he was Majority leader of the Senate), and was dining with Rose Kennedy, and Old Joe came bounding in with his young tennis partner, and they proceeded to go upstairs and have loud sex. That kind of ugliness.

256 I was thinking today, as I often do when at work and not wanting to work, about the state of our world. When did we become so cynical and nasty? Has it always been so or did we live for a time in an unusual age of innocence, optimism, civility and common moral values? Or does nostalgia and the censored, cherry-picked nature of memories distort how we view the past? It does feel as though the world is a meaner, sadder, more selfish place. The stories one reads each day of social media bullying driving kids to suicide, of youths roaming around seeking for innocent people to hit in the face as hard as they can because they're bored and think it's fun, of the visceral hatred that divides our country along political lines, of the utter lowness of our social and public discourse. Where did it begin? Was it in the 60s with the 'cultural revolution'? That seems a likely starting point. The throwing off of traditional morality, the obsession with ourselves and our sensory pleasure- the 'me-first' mentality. The 'sexual revolution' leading to the moral barriers that encouraged and held together the family unit. The continual pushing of boundaries as to what's appropriate in media to the point where we're desensitized to almost everything. Nothing shocks us anymore. I saw a headline today saying the reason Lady Gaga's album flopped is because the shock value of her persona has worn off. If we're no longer shocked as a society by Lady Gaga, are we even capable of attaining the feeling? So much of what has, for most of human existence, been considered beautiful, noble and virtuous is now mocked and scorned as quaint relics of a simple-minded past. Nothing is sacred anymore. Nothing is universally valued, held to, or considered good. The definition of the adjective 'base' is morally low, without estimable personal qualities, dishonorable, meanspirited, selfish and cowardly. I think that's a very apt way of describing the state of our culture.

Scott Brown is going to run in NH. MN is in play. They are going to spent $30 million. He was very clear that they were sick of pissing money away on losers and that is why they are getting into the primaries. Said we had AR won til dickhead fucked up. He is backing Tillis, NC Speaker of the House. Tillis has already been vetted by his donors earlier. Said they had 100 of there biggest money people in for a look see at candidates and have made their plans. Pretty interesting and scary.

276 The left, like all conspiracy theorists, never subscribes to Occam"s Razor. In their minds there is no way that JFK, the beacon of Camelot, could ever be cut down by a single man. No, it had to be the conservatives, Republicans, Communists, mafia, and KKK acting in cahoots. Never mind that almost every assasin has almost always acted alone, there is no way that a disgruntled commie like Oswald could ever pull off this, so he had to have several hundred accomplices. Also, forget that no one else has EVER admitted of even come forward to being an accomplice. Just think about that. Could you imagine what kind of medical treatment you would get if you confessed to the ambulance crew or ER staff that you shot Kennedy? You would be transferred to Johns Hopkins or the Mayo Clinic before the thermometer went in you butthole. Lincoln, McKinley, Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt were all attacked by single gunmen. Even George Wallace was shot by a lone gunman who was a Demoloon. But only JFK could not be killed by a single man because it took something so much larger to bring down Camelot!

296 I was reading about Noel and Heda Field. Noel was fingered by Whittacker Chambers as a spy so he fled to Prague where he was disappeared by state police and sent to Hungry, interrogated, tortured and imprisoned. His wife claimed that the Americans kidnapped him. She contacted friends in Hungry. They went to the state police who told them to lure her over. She came and was arrested and received the same treatment as her idiot husband. Then husband's brother contacts friends in Warsaw asking them to help find his brother and sister in law. They go to the secret police who tell them to lure him over and he is arrested. Then years later, the adopted daughter asks friends in East Germany to help find her parents and she is arrested, sent to Moscow and sentenced to death. Eventually, they all were released but years later. Yet, they still fapped over communism and spit on America.

He openly talked about giving up half his fortune (and encouraging other wealthy Americans to do the same) to the Nazis as a bribe for leaving America alone. Swell guy. Losing Joe Jr. was almost a penance for acting the way he did. Almost, but not quite. He never quit being an asshole the rest of his life. All of his kids. Joe Jr. , John and Robert.  He comes close though. I don't know if it was, perhaps, lingering feelings of inferiority and resentment about being born Irish Catholic instead of WASP, but Joe wanted to establish an American aristocracy based on birth just like the Brits had.

Remember, he told his sons that he expected Joe Jr. to become president and since Joe Jr. died in WWII, he expected JFK to carry on, and if something happened to JFK, RFK needed to become prez and if something happened to RFK, then Teddy... And they followed Joe's wishes, because none of them had the balls to stand up to him. And so the country was inflicted with the Kennedys and Joe got his wish - American aristocracy.

The country would have been better off if they had just been trust-fund goof offs or gotten jobs in some white shoe law firm. They could have spent all their time screwing and drinking and drugging instead of foisting this ridiculous myth on the American people.

Americans know now about how corrupt and horny and ruthless and amoral the clan is - and yet that doesn't matter because they're the Magical Beautiful Kennedys. Aristocrats.  The rules don't apply to them.

They weren't just corrupt, they corrupted the country.

389 I weary of American conservatives being labeled as 'right wing'. I will not play that game. There was nothing 'conservative' in the sense of American conservatism about Hitler or Mussolini. They were outright fascists. Same for Franco. That their means of securing power employed the tactics of socialists and Marxists seems undeniable. The 'Right Wing' label is flung about by the Left with the constant hope that it will stick. A willing Fifth Column helps.

LBJ was a political hack who was a DEMOCRAT Senator from Texas.  The Solid South was still solidly democrat at this time and, yes, they loved them their democrat President.

No, blue.dot, you are the one exhibiting ignorance about fascism.  Any ideology or regime in which state power predominates is, ipso facto, left-wing.  Unless we want to invent new uses of these terms, contrary to the conventional usage that comes out of the French Revolution.

The Italian Fascists (who kinda have the trademark on the whole "fascist" terminology) had a slogan: "Tutto nello Stato, niente al di fuori dello Stato, nulla contro lo Stato" (everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state).   And if I hear soft mewling about slandering good "well-intentioned" left-wing Americans, review how popular Mussolini in particular was with the 30s equivalent of NYT/NPR retards.  Pretty eye-opening.

And if you need remedial work on the Nazis (and you probably do, a lot), for starters just wade through the trilogy by the British historian (name?) - Coming of the Third Reich/Third Reich in Power/Third Reich at War.  Mindful of his almost humorous desperation to paint the German commies and socialists in positive terms, imbibe his good summary of how National Socialism conquered German society, note how the state/Party "coordinated" all aspects of life.  Interestingly, not with as much success as the true totalitarianism of Soviet Russia - but that's mostly because Germany was a very advanced highly educated country, and Russia was very backwards.

But enough of the hopeless task of rescuing even a single soul from the degraded ignorance and inverted civic spirit that has become of what was once America (law and the individual and freedom subordinated to power, greed, racism, the state as god, and ignorant moral narcissism).  America's distinctive contribution to human history was a system centered on the individual, with a tightly limited government.  That is about 75% gone in reality, and at least 50% gone in the mindset of "Americans".  In 20 years, the place will be unrecognizable - in the most important, substantive, and precise sense of the word.

459 It didn't help that the Birchers nominated a right-wing lunatic in Goldwater to run against a sensible LBJ. Goldwater's extreme pro-life stance as well as Reagan's insane "Time to Choose" speech resulted in an unprecidented Dem landslide. Take note, Jesus freaks!

460 Leon Czolgosz was an Anarchist and not a product of right-wing Buffalo, NY. But because the anti-McKinley tenor came not so much from radical outcasts but from parts of mainstream Buffalo, some say the anger seemed to come with the cityÂ’s informal blessing...and also their delicious wings.

464 Why did Oswald work with Bannister, Ferrie, et al?  How did he get back into the U.S. so quickly after defecting?  Why did he learn Russian while serving in the military?

Maybe he wasn't a lefty, and maybe he didn't shoot the president.  If you want to blame a political villian, LBJ and the Washington establishment seems good, and maybe right.  LBJ had put hits on people before (look up Mac Wallace, his hitman), and in this case had a variety of elements that had been cooperating in secret assasination plans for other leaders and also all stood to benefit from Kennedy being gone.

Or maybe Oswald did it.  Maybe Arlen Spector, when confronted with an additional bullet that would have challenged the Oswald/single-shooter narrative, brilliantly came to the honest truth of the magic bullet theory.  That guy is pure integrity, as we all know, so definitely Oswald must have done it.
