"The Narrative" Is the Enemy of Truth and Fact
— Ace

Interesting piece by Richard Fernandez, which I think is a little bit hinky in some of the connections it makes, but still makes some great points.

You can read the short version at Instapundit.

Despite an abundance of suggestive information, the FBI seemed singularly unable to see Tsarnaev as a threat. Part of the reason, according to the Washington Examiner, was that blindness was engineered into the system. The agents were trained not to see it.

It is quite possible, though, the FBI agents who interviewed Tsarnaev on both occasions failed to understand what they saw and heard because thatÂ’s what they were trained to do. As The Washington ExaminerÂ’s Mark Flatten reported last year, FBI training manuals were systematically purged in 2011 of all references to Islam that were judged offensive by a specially created five-member panel. Three of the panel members were Muslim advocates from outside the FBI, which still refuses to make public their identities. Nearly 900 pages were removed from the manuals as a result of that review. Several congressmen were allowed to review the removed materials in 2012, on condition that they not disclose what they read to their staffs, the media, or the general public.

...

But to really learn you have to be prepared to listen to what you donÂ’t want to hear. The future only contains new information if it tells you something you donÂ’t know. But bureaucracies want to make all new knowledge predictable, consistent with the existing narrative. And homogenization destroys information.

I'll direct you to the article itself to read about his likening of the preordained conclusions of corporate-like institutions, where conclusions are foreordained and all "truth" must be reached by focus-group analysis and a consensus of various heads of department, to a two-headed coin. A coin where every flip yields "heads" as a result. Making it useless as far as resolving issues.

He continues:

...

What creates sameness is ideology. Ideology by definition reduces the range of responses to situations and limits the ways in which we can decode and encode messages to politically correct outcomes.

The model eventually becomes robust enough to reject information that doesn't fit the model, and ultimately there is no new information, just further reiterations of the model's one permitted outcome.

There's more there, including some kind of computer program which actually seems to be artificially intelligent, or at least possessing one of the central (if not the central) element of true intelligence, self-motivation, self-assignment of personally-chosen goals.

I think there's a lot of stuff here to chew over.

14 It's pretty disturbing they purged all the references to Islam in 2011. But what was the excuse in 2001, when no one at FBI was willing to connect the dots that John O'Neill had established? He had identified the 19 who would ultimately take down the towers. He didn't know what their ultimate plan was, but he drew conclusions from their patterns of activity.

This country is in serious trouble when officials (some on the right) bitched about the Russians not supplying us with further information after they alerted us that Tsarnaev may have been radicalized.

The Russians didn't need to say anything.  They were doing us a favor by even mentioning anything about this guy.  To have people of importance in our government complaining in public that the Russians didn't do enough is just what is needed to insure that other governments stay the fuck out of any future incidents.

26 I blame Spencer Ackerman. I have posted it before, but in September 2011 he crowed in his Danger Room column that he had forced - through his reporting - the FBI to remove anti-Muslim material from their training. This is EXACTLY what Fernandez means with this bit: FBI training manuals were systematically purged in 2011 of all references to Islam that were judged offensive by a specially created five-member panel Ackerman wrote: http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/02/hundreds-fbi-documents-muslims/ The bureau disclosed initial findings from its months-long review during a meeting at FBI headquarters on Wednesday with several Arab and Muslim advocacy groups, attended by Director Robert Mueller. So far, the inquiry has uncovered and purged over 700 pages of documentation from approximately 300 presentations given to agents since 9/11 — some of which were similar to briefings published by Danger Room last year describing “mainstream” Muslims as “violent.” Actually, that article is an update - he has a longer one. Thing is - Ackerman took pride in making this happen. He says that the training material made the FBI focus on Muslims and Muslim institutions. By changing this focus in training, it changes the actions. Note, Joker's bro and his mom went on CIA watch list OCTOBER 2011. But the FBI, whipped in September 2011, missed it. Which is all fine and dandy, except the FBI can operate in the US, the CIA cannot.

Of course we can't know, we're just pathetic children, not citizens for whom politicians work. A few years back, PA passed a new government openness and transparency law that was ballyhooed for bringing sunshine on the workings of government and blah blah blah. Unfortunately, my job at the time required me to read and comprehend the damn thing. You will be shocked, shocked to hear that rather than expanding access to information, information was now behind even higher barriers and that the FOIA process was made quite burdensome indeed. But hey. Openness and Transparency! It says it right there in the name of the law! Explain to me again how it is that I'm not a subject rather than a citizen? I seem to have forgotten.

Nope. Though you could point to the ideology of romanitas versus barbarism as the reason why the Romans were unable to respond adequately to changes within German society from the middle of the third century onward, or realize that the Germans were manupulating the Romans for their own ends as much as the Romans were manipulating the barbarians.

I dunno...one of the networks commented that the FBI knew who these guys were on Tuesday and one assumes they released the pics when something spooked them. If true, Tuesday seems like pretty damn fast police work unless the fuckheads were on a pretty short list, one that existed because the FBI may understand both the climate they operate in and what a real threat actually is. We would have to believe the FBI created such an extreme amount of groupthink it overwhelmed members assigned to the  JTTF. I am no where near "on the job" but I think anyone tasked there from the NYPD would disabuse them of that sort of thinking pretty quick. Is there a narrative? absolutely. Am I absolving the FBI? Absolutely not. But I would look for a "better" explanation. Like reducing career risk. Which if true, and we have no evidence of that, is damning in itself

Since we're not going to punish our enemies in any way (instead, we invite them here, see Bomba Mama, Crazy-Assed), we'd better steel ourselves  that we're going to be seeing more and more Bostons in our future. And our "leaders" will keep  insisting that islam is a peaceful religion.

78 I am currently reading "The Finish", by Mark Bowden (author also of 'Blackhawk Down'). It documents the intelligence activities that led to Bin Laden's end. What is astounding, is how reluctant the Clinton administration was to act on intelligence. In 'No Easy Day' the author (still anon., as far as I know), the author reports how under the JEF, operational teams had to begin operating as though they were policemen out to make an arrest.

I will echo what others have said, until, and unless, we can begin to regain honest forthright reporting in the media, without liberal gloss and twist, we are doomed.

Someone posted a Youtube video this weekend...showing the Israelis making fun of this.

It showed 3 FBI agents trying to figure out 'the motive' for the Boston Bombing.

One of the agents said the word..."muslim"...and a loud buzzer and red lights went off, and the agent was seized and carried away.

It would be funny, if it weren't so true.

I went back and tried to find that video, but couldn't find it.

Perhaps whoever posted it will do it again.

Three of the panel members were Muslim advocates from outside the FBI, which still refuses to make public their identities.

Great article over at the US Naval Institute website about the "why."  It seems as if these two losers were very much "textbook" in how they followed the profile - if only the profile were followed.

Islam is, obviously, a significant indicator.  As the article points out, it's hardly the only one - but that's what makes this more frustrating.  There were a lot of indicators here.

There is one interesting counter-indicator here: sports.  Most US-based terrorists don't participate in team sports.  OTOH, I don't think these two played team sports - just individual sports.  Is that correct, or did the younger one play soccer as well as wrestling?

Regardless, the more we learn about this the more we realize that Political Correctness had a lot to do with these two not being dealt with before the attack.

Thought-provoking post, and thought provoking link.

169 Radical Islam is being purged from all governmental auspices as a result of the Obama Administrations War on Political Correctness.

It's actually the only war Obama has a stomach for.

I would call the people in Boston victims of that "war"- wouldn't you?

It's also infected the military. Read today's Washington Times story about Lt. Colonel Mathew Dooley who is now being represented by Thomas Moore Law Center;

175 MEDICAL REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVE AT GUANTANAMO BAY AP 4/29/2013 5:41:29 PM (AP) Medical reinforcements arrive at Guantanamo Bay PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad Medical reinforcements have arrived at Guantanamo Bay to help deal with a hunger strike among prisoners at the U.S. base in Cuba. Lt. Col. Samuel House said Monday that the roughly 40 nurses and other specialists arrived over the weekend. They are U.S. Navy personnel. He says their arrival was planned several weeks ago as the number of prisoners joining the hunger strike kept growing. Prisoners began the hunger strike in February to protest conditions and their indefinite confinement. The number of striking prisoners has not risen since Saturday, when 100 of the 166 inmates had joined. House says 21 have been receiving liquid nutrients through a nasal tube to prevent dangerous weight loss. Five prisoners are being observed in a base hospital.

176 "Mutawwa'în" (plural; sing. mutawwa') originally was a casual synonym for the religious police of Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia, the formal short term for the Saudi religious police is هيئة "hay'ah" which is Arabic for "commission" and is a shortened version of "the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vices" which serves as the infrastructure of proselytization and enforcement of Islamic tenets.

201 And people, THIS is how it's done. You make your message into Entertainment, and THAT carries it to the Brawndo voter. One other thing; the human body produces certain 'feel good' chemicals, entirely on it's own. Oxytocin is one of them. (Not to be confused -- though I wonder why in the hell a pharma company would name something so closely -- with Oxycontin. Coincidence? Same letters, arranged differently. Damned if I know.) When you 'feel good' your body is producing Oxytocin. You attend a wedding and average levels of Oxytocin spike for hours afterwords. Sexual intercourse? Yup, it's involved. When my wife was 'induced' for our first child? Oxytocin was the chemical administered. From Wiki: "Oxytocin evokes feelings of contentment, reductions in anxiety, and feelings of calmness and security around the mate." I think Ronald Reagan was a master at making people laugh, reducing our anxiety, making us feel calm as the world was re-shaped.

204 DiogenesLamp: "It is a tactic to further their cause by political means. Dying would serve their political cause. We ought not let them do it for that reason alone."

And it could be said that letting them die (or killing them) would serve our own political cause. You wanna be a terrorist? You can die in any number of places and we have a special center to see that that happens if our own "selfish" needs are not satisfied. We won't be intimidated by their political cause because our own matters, too. Don't want to join civil society? Fine. We can mete out barbarism as well and its exercise won't be a sign of a slippery slope (to inhumanity) they'll surely assert.

I wasn't aware the russians were responsible for the national security of our country.

However the russians did decided to share their intelligence with us, and as we know it was ignored because, their stupidity and 'fairness' is more important than american citizens security.
Quite a change from their shrieking when did Bush know and Why didn't he stop it!

Playing games with national security seems to be what we knew they do,  But they never take responsibilty, even as to go to blaming russians for not coming and busting the guys themselves i guess.

209 The Fernandez piece has been sitting on my browser, finally got around to reading it. I liked the pull-quotes, but on the whole I thought it was a very strange article - hinky indeed - which drew some logically dubious connections between politically-driven FBI internal rulemaking and theories about the evolution of intelligence, near-death experiences, etc, with the latter stuff having nothing to do with the former, imho. It's possible he made some legitimate point or points which simply flew over my head, but the article set off my BS detector, which I have learned to trust even in uncertain waters. Fwiw, the Wissner-Gross article Fernandez mentions (which may be profound, or maybe not*) is discussed here: http://tinyurl.com/br4t7wy and here: http://tinyurl.com/cb9p8we *http://xkcd.com/793/
