Well today I was essentially incommunicado with a cell phone that wouldnÂ’t roam and quite possibly the worldÂ’s shittiest and most frustrating internet connection.
I havenÂ’t been this cut off for a long time and I did not like the feelings it brought back. All day long I saw other, happier people googling away, Candy Crushing, and jabbering on their cell phones while I had...nothing. Now I know how the other half feel.
And so of course you must suffer too with this husk of an ONT.
Meet the products of the modern American University system. Never in history has ignorance been this expensive.
Questioner: What was the Holocaust?
American College Student: UmÂ…IÂ’m on the spot.
Questioner: Which country was Adolf Hitler the leader of?
American College Student: I think itÂ’s Amsterdam?
Questioner: What was Auschwitz?
American College Student: I donÂ’t know.Questioner: What were the Nuremburg Trials?
American College Student: I donÂ’t know.
Why Did the Nazis Brutally Beat and Kill This 14 Year Old Girl in Auschwitz?
Because she was Polish, Catholic, and they could. And that was enough. Her name was Czesława Kwoka.

Believe It or Not America is More Conservative Now Than It's Been in Half a Century
And this is true across all 50 states with the South showing the most rightward trend.
The first question, reported in the left panel of the figure below, asked whether the government in Washington should see to it that every person has a job and a good standard of living or whether the government should let each person get ahead on their own. The fact that the solid dots (2002) are to the right of the hollow dots (1964) supports the view that all regions of the country became more conservative. Interestingly, in 1964, the South appears to have been the most supportive of the liberal response (the government should ensure a job and a good standard of living). The second question, reported in the right panel, asked whether or not the government in Washington was getting too powerful. Across all regions, we again see opinion has shifted to the right.

What Do Today's College Students Most Desire?
Oppression.
What do America’s college students want? They want to be oppressed. More precisely, a surprising number of students at America’s finest colleges and universities wish to appear as victims — to themselves, as well as to others — without the discomfort of actually experiencing victimization. Here is where global warming comes in. The secret appeal of campus climate activism lies in its ability to turn otherwise happy, healthy, and prosperous young people into an oppressed class, at least in their own imaginings. Climate activists say to the world, “I’ll save you.” Yet deep down they’re thinking, “Oppress me.”
What is the Riddle of Modern Steel?
Contra Thulsa Doom ConanÂ’s father was more correct.
Fire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky, but Crom is your god. Crom, and he lives in the earth. Once giants lived in the earth, Conan, and in the darkness of chaos, they fooled Crom, and they took from him the enigma of steel. Crom was angered, and the earth shook, and fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters. But in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield, and we who found it. We are just men, not gods, not giants, just men. And the secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan, you must learn its discipline, for no one, no one in this world can you trust, not men, not women, not beasts... This you can trust. [points to his sword]
The riddle of modern steel is that it can be as hard or as soft as you want and a skillful forger can transform it back and forth according to his needs by controlling the temperature and impurities.

1. The Ashkenazy (sp?) Jews have been found to be not genetically Jewish, but genetically (most likely) German.
2. While the Nazis preyed on the Jews because they had wealth (they taught the Turks to do the same thing to the reasonable wealthy Armenians) they claimed a racial purpose behind the killings
3. A reasonable proportion of the Jews that they persecuted were probably Ashkenazy
4. Realistically, Germans were just killing Germans because some of those Germans called themselves Jews
Nazism is not known for its brilliance per se

Jewish migration into Germany was relatively recent, and the vast majority of Jews came from Eastern Europe and Russia. There is no genetic basis for the claim that German Jews were ethnic German.

I actually think the whole gay rights movement--including this current obsession with "gay marriage"--was started and pushed as a way to get a group that is overwhelmingly white, and largely affluent, to be seen as victims. And they are catered to largely because they are affluent and work in fields that allow them to use and spread their influence upon a great many people. They are useful to the Democrat Party because of their direct cash contributions and because they can spread the gospel of liberalism...

idea pushed by .....actual privileged white people, liberals and

Going sack by sack with a pair of scissors, an aid worker begins to cut.

Or also discriminated against (Ex: CA asians needing higher test scores/qualifications to get into certain universities).
Then being taught in Asian American Studies classes (required for "diversity" credit) about all the victimization of Asians in America and the need for "solidarity" and holding of grievances even if contrary to one's own experience. Asian American achievement? Apparently the only one is to be a Victim of the White Man.

Active RA is under 500k now. I'd guess the percentage of those who are trigger pullers is in the 20% range. We've shifted a lot of logistics/supply and maintenance to contrctors over the years. During WWII it was about 10% trigger pullers.
Traditional deployments, like Korea, Okinawa, etc + middle east, Africa, A-stan, etc + CONUS base staff has the Army running pretty freaking lean these days.
At one point, we had over 500k in Vietnam alone as well as all the other ongoing cold war deployments and a lot more active CONUS bases.
Odierno is absolutely right. The US Army is stretched as far as it can be. If he had to come up with another 30k for some action it would be flat out impossible.

Today was one of those morning when I couldn't think of any reason to not go back to sleep. No work, nothing that really needed doing, at least not without being in a more motivated move. (I got my stuff into a smaller less costly storage rental over the weekend but I still have to get rid of a fair amount of stuff to eliminate the need for the locker entirely. Feels like erasing my history.)
It's something you live with. Not a day goes by that at some moment I don't think at calling it quits. It generally only happens when I'm alone but if people knew how often I think about nobody would willingly ride in a vehicle I was driving. (The scene with Christopher Walken in Annie Hall comes to mind.)
But I'm 49 and screwed up as I am, I haven't done anything really dire so far.

Unfortunately, the obvious main party platform plank would put the new party is the position of opposing BS. That would place the party in opposition to the largest industry in the world, which also happens to be the largest industry in the U.S., and the largest industry in every one of the 50 states. However, since D.C. is entirely fueled by BS, the knobs would be starting in the right place. Therefore, I hereby put forth the nomination for the new 3rd party name as ..... The noBS party.

In both cases, we had crowdsourced moron detective work and a caring, decent, and ultimately effective moronic response. I'm very proud of the way the Horde handled both cases and would urge those in the grip of such feelings to reach out to the Horde....making sure, of course, not to end up with anyone who smells like feline urination or hails from Brattleboro.
I'm always happy to see Joffen when he comes through.....and hope that someday he'll proudly report that his dear daughter is eagerly anticipating her ringbearer duties when he ties the knot anew.

When I got out, everyone had like 7 years on inactive reserve before you were truly free and clear. You didn't have to do anything like showing up monthly as guard/reserve do, but they could call you back during that period.

There is supposed to be a "ports to plains" freeway starting in Laredo, encompassing I-27, and coming up through CO and into the Dakotas. Of course, highway funds from stimulus only went to Blueish states and Libs hate roads anyway. This is the same NAFTA highway of doom some whackos think is a bad thing.

There is blood work and there is blood work.
In 1988 I ended up in hospital I thought I was truly losing my mind. I'd always had depression but I'd become increasingly lethargic and unable to do my job. I thought I was fatigued and would try to nap in my car but to no avail. Turned out I had mono but the doctor I'd gone to didn't check for it because I didn't have a sore throat.
It wasn't a zebra, just a slightly abnormal horse but as far as he was concerned, mono without throat soreness wasn't worth looking for. Really screwed up my life.

If you're looking for a home product, I would advise short-wave UVB-intense lamps. (Unless it is for Psoriasis. Long-wave has proven to be better, but harder to find.) There are small products, (the size of a large toaster), that'll do a nice 15-min 'facial'. Three times per week should be enough for those concerned about the aging-effects of the UVA radiation.
The side-effect is a nice tan. If the UVB is 1.0+, (30% UVB), you'll only want to spend 15-20 minutes under that light. Darker complexions can go for thirty minutes, however. I wouldn't suggest ANY MORE.... Moreover, an ALARM CLOCK because it can be very comfy! Again, three times per week should be plenty, but that's up to you.
Small home products, (hand-wands) are around $200+, and are mainly for treatment of psoriasis and vitiligo. Used tanning beds can be anywhere from $500-to-$2,000. Look for something with at least 24 bulbs and around $800-to-$1,000. Replacement bulbs will be $10-to-$20 each. It ain't cheap. DO NOT BUY $8.00 BULBS! (Unless you want to look like a zebra-from-prison!)
I always used Wolff System products, but there are other good bulbs out there. The electricity used will probably be around one dollar per session and you'll a 220 outlet.
I've never used one of those large bulbs that look like outdoor floodlights, so I cannot speak to how effective they are. They also need a special setup, as you can't just screw them into your local fixture... lol.
Tanning salons will run you anywhere from $25-to-$50/month. Probably closer to $25/mo now through the end of February. Go three times a week, or as "needed".
It DOES help. If you go this time of year and the place isn't heated well, ask your Tanning Moron to run the bed before you get there. They can be chilly!
And if you DO tan, there's no real "need" for special tanning lotions, unless you're trying to set some sort of personal "record". Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

Thulsa Doom was Kull's primary adversary--so a Howard character. Wikipedia (I know, I know) says that he is basically Thoth-Amon, a nemesis of Conan, with a different name as portrayed in the movie.
Regardless of faithfulness to the source material, I stand by my statement of the awesomeness of that character as played by JEJ.

I have a suspicion that a form of cross-breeding -- nothing to simple as racialism, but think big here, like the melding of Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons -- left us with distinct and occasionally at-odds inner daemons. No way to prove that, and probably never will be, ergo also can't be disproven, so it's as valid as Climate Science and somewhat more useful.

I concur with much of your thinking along these lines. I have always used the primitive society as the means by which human thinking and instinct were derived. There are a lot of cross connections between survival in a group and individual instinct.
My theory on where suicidal impulses come from stems from this exact relationship (survival, individual, group) you mentioned. I think you can probably see where I'm going with it.
Don't really want to elaborate though.

I know you're joking but the scientific evidence really does say our body and brains require it. Literally different genes are activated when we're around other people. Different proteins are being manufactured.
It's the difference between looking at a pretty girl on the internet and standing next to a pretty girl. All sorts of biochemical processes are activated by actually seeing and smelling and touching real actual people. And it's down to the genetic level. Genes are constantly being up-regulated and down-regulated based off environmental stimuli.

I was one of what Watson termed "wild ducks" who are to be cherished and their quirks tolerated.
Wild ducks can be maddening for a "textbook" manager, but they do the things that nobody else can do, and do them 20x faster than anyone believed possible, and offer sage guidance to their manager that warns them away from impending disasters.
My last few years at IBM were almost 100% "off-book" self-directed guerrilla projects within the scope of other larger projects doing performance or manufacturability work nobody was willing to book official budget/staff for, or writing guerrilla QA tests that had a defect find rate of around 50% (my intuition about where bugs are hiding is Nostradamus like)
All paid off hugely in the end saving the company millions of dollars.
Management turned a blind eye and let me run wild. Whatever I was doing was working, so they didn't care how the sausage got made;->

There's a story about a reporter going to interview Henry Ford at HQ in Detroit. At the time, there was an "executives row" where all the honchos had offices off one long corridor. While pacing his way to Ford's office, the reporter happened to notice one guy leaning way back in his chair with his feet on his desk.
After most of the interview, the reporter summoned up the nerve to tell Ford what he'd seen, and he got this reply: "Son, that man had a single idea last year that saved this company millions of dollars, and amounted to 10% of our net profit for the year.....and do you know where his feet were when he came up with that idea? Right where I'm hoping they are now -- on his desk."

INTJ's are like that. We're generally content to work behind the scenes with little fanfare, but can and will step out as forceful leaders if compelled to when existing leadership proves incompetent.
I've had to "bust out" like that and "assume command" a few times on jobs. Its not something I'm comfortable with, but its something I can do competently when the alternative is failure.
My preference is to be paired with competent management and act in a tech advisory role for them, but that's not always possible.

I think it has more to do with the significant urbanization (or, more accurately, de-ruralizing) of the 60s and 70s. Virtually no-one younger than 30 has spent significant amounts of time where only the cicadas hum and birds chirp. Most had the TV on as babysitter, have the radio on in their car, and wander around with their ipods playing -- they've never experienced silence. So, as you sit comfy in the quiet, they start yammering nonstop to mimic what they know.

In my case, it's from being a self-aware sickly kid. After I got out on my own and learned what I was allergic to, I was much less sickly -- but still had that kid/nurse thing going. At 50, however, this is not a good position to be carrying forward.

You have marginal or no preference of Extraversion over Introversion (1%)
You have moderate preference of Sensing over Intuition (50%)
You have moderate preference of Thinking over Feeling (38%)
You have moderate preference of Judging over Perceiving (33%)
I told you... lol. I can sit and plan out an entire day, by myself, happily. Write, plot, draw, read, game, do taxes, etc.
I can also get in front of a microphone, with little preparation, and host "Bare-As-You-Dare" competitions. Most of it Improv with a few previously outlined jokes or topics.
I'm either a chameleon or a sociopath!
Most of those questions were hard to answer. I had to ask myself, "what have you done most often, currently?" I could have gone the other way on at least five of them.

I'm pretty sure that I'm older than my primary care doc....but he's a sharp guy. And, as I found out one time, the managing partner of the local office I used to work for of a national CPA firm -- a guy who retired while I was still in my 20s -- also sees him.....and drives down from the mountains in order to do so. This MP is a guy who could see any doctor in the western US if it suited him.
By contrast, I've had many older doctors that I ended up not respecting at all, as my own medical knowledge rivaled or exceeded theirs.

I still cannot get used to the idea that when 20-30 year olds look at me they see an old guy. Although it can be useful when they automatically defer to me even though we're of equal rank on a contract job.
I never did a lot of the rite of passage stuff that helps people look at themselves as adults. To an extent, I sometimes feel more loss from that aspect of not staying in school than the education. I'd already gotten used to teaching myself most things from books by the time I hit my teens.
IIRC, it was in Reader's Digest that I read a short piece where a guy reflected on going through life feeling like a fraud, that he really wasn't a grownup because he had no idea what to do much of the time and had to get by on educated guesses while it seemed like everybody else just knew. While playing golf with his sixty-something father, he relates is problem and asks the older man at what age he finally felt like a competent adult.
"I'll let you know when it happens, son."

The E means you can post as the Gang of Gaming Morons when it's only you. The N means that you think about what you see and react on your thoughts, instead of letting people pull the wool over your eyes. The F means that you let your feelings/passions drive your actions rather than doing a Spock and harnessing them to your rationalizing/thinking. The P speaks to your moral sense -- you don't judge for others, you merely watch.

There's another page on that website that explains the letters. Here's my stab at a summary
I-E: Introverted/Extroverted - do you prefer hanging out with people or not
S-N: Sensing/Intuition - do you rely on experience or theory to understand the world
T-F: Thinking/Feeling - do you process information by thinking about it, or seeing how it makes you feel?
J-P: Judging/Perceiving - mental style - rational (judgements) or irrational (perception/gut feelings)
Not really sure on the last one, really. If anyone has a better take, would like to hear.

That we managed to suppress the worst excesses of typical empire for as long as we did is the amazing part.

Cthulu, your point is valid, but I believe the real damage was done in the 2000 election, when algore refused to accept the outcome, and de-legitimized the presidency. From that point on, it was all fair game. Most of our voters are not even partially aware of the intricacies of our system (thanks long march), and the protections from tyranny the founders established, so when the flaws in the system were revealed, it resulted in a transition from "republic" to "democracy" where tyranny of the majority applies. Democracy, as we all here know, is inherently unstable and inevitably results in a majority voting a minority into slavery. What remains to be seen is how the next transition of power will play out, as I cannot see our new Caesar stepping down. I hope I am wrong, but I see the blatant provocations of the shutdown theatre being a dry run for what we might see in a couple of years ...

There's a titanic behind the scenes struggle going on in the Democrat party right now.
Obama is attempting to hijack the party via OFA. The DNC is deeply in debt with no visible way to pay it off and its fundraising efforts have been heavily cannibalized by OFA.
There's only been a small handful of news stories about this internal funding crisis and OFA fund raising cannibalization, and those were largely ignored in the media.

The shit that was pulled in 2000 did more damage to the foundation than was readily apparent at the time -- and the 9/11 tragedy did a lot to distract afterwards. But there is nothing, nothing, nothing in the current era to compare to the thugocracy and lawlessness of the last 5 years.

The problem with that is our military has been so gutted it can no longer function as a traditional empire's military might.
We're "empire lite". Clusterfuck, without the tasty plunder. Its not a good place to be.

Yes, the days of being an average Joe and winning in politics is the major exception and not the rule.
Your son should tell the girls he does, and then invite them over to show them how he gets that color. Heh.

You could always do a legal name change, get that propagated through your undergrad transcripts, and then claim to be a minority. Universities don't look deeply at a student's past the way applying for a job with CIA or NSA would.

It wasn't that long ago that armies ran on local plunder and officers looked at looting said plunder as the way to fund their retirement.
That's kinda been the norm for thousands of years. The US model is a new experiment of unproven worth

Well, this little piggie needs to go to bed.
Tomorrow I'll be seeing some hottie that I told I was a doctor. Offered some free medical care. Of course I lied so I can get her into bed. I'm a pig damnit! It's what we do.

Back in Chi-town, we were in 5a, as I recall, due to lake effect moderating temps. Hubby's folks in Upper MI are in zone 3.
Sorry for the pedantic. It's my frustrated academic coming out.
Sorry to hear of your hubby's spine. Degenerating spines suck. If sitting is uncomfortable for him, may I suggest a BackCycler based upon extensive personal experience?

You may be interested to note that USDA zones don't work right in the West, because of weird microclimates. Instead, everyone refers to Western Garden Book climate zones. I've been developing a translation table, but it's not easy.

On a brighter note, today I read an article speculating about the impending death of NBC. Reminded me that Ace called for a concentration of effort in that direction a while back.
I do wish the techies wouldn't insist upon rescuing these dying media sycophants though.

the media types all get a paycheck and someone keeps approving those paychecks.
I urge everyone not to subscribe to the accidental paycheck theory. Wanna know why they write and say the things they do? Find out who approves the paychecks.

As to Miss Reese, she very kindly showed her smallish but well formed boobehs early on in the flick. yum.
A short time later, they show susan nude, but out of focus. Thank you, Mr. cameraman for that small mercy.
The movie is a whodunit, with mild overall violence and not great lines being delivered. Still, I'd give it 2.5 stars out of 5.

I suppose that it does no good to delete all of the anger, the rage honestly, that I felt upon seeing Czes³awa's picture. The things, the hateful things, that I wrote before are probably still echoing somewhere in the bowels of the machine. So, I shall just offer up a prayer. Come swiftly, Lord.

Wrong, it is not about psychological manipulation of an innocent person, it is about breaking down the barriers a guilty person has to confessing.
An innocent person's reaction to the Reid technique is instant denial. A guilty person seeks out rationalization of his or her crime, they seek to minimize it, they seek to excuse it. That is not what an innocent person does. An innocent person denies the crime, an innocent person demands a strong punishment of the perpetrator, an innocent person does not minimize or rationalize the crime.
One important aspect of the Reid technique that you failed to report, is that the Reid technique uses observation of the subject as well as a non-confrontational approach. One such observation of subjects is their physical reaction to the interview. A guilty subject closes up while interviewed, while an innocent person moves closer to the interviewer, opening up their body position. A guilty person moves back in on themselves, closing themselves off, folding their arms across their body, not looking at the interviewer, and becomes quiet as their knowledge of their guilt becomes apparent to the interviewer.
People of the gun are reacting to an over-reaching attack on gun rights and a dictorial regime by accepting and aligning themselves with criminal behavior. This can be because they anticipate illegal and unconstitutional activity by law enforcement or that they are over-reacting.
Mostly it is because people of the gun are not in on the political fight except on gun issues. They are ignoring Obamacare and amnesty for illegal aliens, two issues that are undermining all rights in this country, one by overthrowing the Constitution, the other by importing anti-gun illegal aliens.
Your enemy is not the Reid technique, because the Reid technique was developed to interview and obtain uncoerced confessions of the guilty.
