The Rainbow of Our Life - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Whilst scrolling through the Sherwin Williams website, dreaming of the just-so golden tan or the perfect dark taupey-gray, I marveled at the names of the colors and the emotions they, the marketing geniuses, seek to evoke through their creativity. They use adjectives such as 'Brilliant', 'Sophisticated', and 'Homespun' and allow one to revel for a bit in the warmth or the cool of a particular hue.

We've all had gray days and we've all had days filled with sunshine but, if you had to pick a color, and name it yourself, for where you are in your life at this point in time, what would it be?

Mine? Perhaps Melancholy gray.

Open thread.

58 I have no idea what color I would be.

I was reading an article about how some people have more rods or cones (I can't remember which) in their eyes and thus they can see more shades of color than other people.  My brother must have that because he can put out three or four different shades of a color and talk about differences that I can't see at all.  He's also one of those annoying people who can walk into a room and see what it will be when he's done with it and not what it looks like now.

Pluses: The twin daughters are smart, sassy, heads usually on straight, interested in people and life, heading off to college in a month. We will miss them but they are off to do great things, I hope, based on what they've done so far. The family is in good health. The wife and I are both employed, well paid, in jobs that are not as satisfying as we'd like but no one abuses us. We'll be able to send the kids to college and still eat steak occasionally.

The down side? The JEF is still president, Eric Holder is still AG,  Lois Lerner is not in jail. Detroit is dead and Al Qaeda is alive.

110 I still say we are over due for a massive volcanic explosion. Krakatoa is pretty active. it blew in 1883 with 3 cones completely disappearing. A mere 44 years later, it comes roaring back out of the ocean. It is now 2700 ft high. It has potential but it is still a baby. So, I'm putting my money on Vesuvius tho Indonesia has the largest number of active volcanoes. That's because God hates mooslems.

168 115 Alright people, need movie help. I'm looking at you specifically AtC.

The wife and I are dying for something to watch. Needs to be on Netflix. No horror. Nothing hardcore scifi/fantasy.

Go.

Netflix, or Netflix instant? And just what does "hardcore" mean? The reason I ask is that I have two movies to propose, but both are Netflix DVD, not instant. Both have Bruce Willis, which is not a coincidence, because the guy is good and also he gets to vacuum up the best scripts. Both are yeah, somewhat scifi, but the wife loved them.

OK, enough preliminaries. First recommendation: Surrogates. If you have not seen this, you really should. It's absolutely awesome. Recommended without reservation. If, in the early scenes, you think, as I did, "WTF: Willis looks fake! Did he get too much plastic surgery?"...trust me, you're right where you should be.

Second recommendation: Looper. Tougher recommendation, not so obviously great, more complex, but my wife and I were both glad we saw it. Not perfect, but at this point, I would not want to live a life in which I had not seen this movie. The people who thought of the concepts it contains should be rewarded.

I will ask Him to assuage the fear and ill-felt emotion of a moment, an afternoon, another day.

May Our Lord give you the strength to continue your blessed work. Our prayers will be behind you and I'll pray you find comfort surrounds you.

I'll pray comfort surrounds your dear brother.

May love invade your soul so joyously that you inadvertently knock an unimportant tube out of a vein.

And yeah, we've seen both those movies and they're both great.

Oh. This is one of those graduate-school level questions, then. So I know I can't just suggest Serenity or Moon.

You've probably already thought of this, but the big togetherness thing around Chez Splunge is to get engrossed in a long series together. We did Buffy and Angel, Firefly (naturally), Justified, Star Trek TOS, the first few seasons of 24. I left her on her own to do Walking Dead and Dexter, but maybe there's a possibility there if you like that creepy stuff. If you want to shade your eyes to the outcome of an awesome already-decided, atypical reality show, where the Penny Arcade guys pick their favorite Web cartoonist, check out Strip Search. But it's not on Netflix; I had to buy a gadget to tie my laptop to the TV to get my wife to watch with me.

Slab of country ham on the bottom. "Brick" or "slab" of fried grits on top of that. Shrimp with some kind of hollandaise-like sauce poured over them on top of all that.

I do not want to presume, but I have read your comments for a very long time now; those comments have led me to conclude that you have the right man for you. And this one leads me to conclude that your man has found his next quest. Doesn't sound too bad to me. This is not just true, but so true that it should be engraved onto a plaque and handed to every male who is in a relationship lasting longer than two months.

And yet, with my Y chromosome, I must learn it anew each time I talk to a different woman, or after a new month is showing on the calendar. Guys want to fix stuff, that's just how it is. The one success I can claim is having accepted the "just because I'm complaining about something you can't really fix, doesn't mean I'm unhappy to be with you" frame.

407 385 I've mentioned it before, of all the times that the Reverend Al and Jesse Jackson have been on tv or speaking publicly, I can't ever remember the words "Jesus Christ", "salvation", "Savior" or the like being uttered.

I've looked up the qualifications for "race guilt media whore" and "race guilt extortionist," and  and the words you mention do not appear anywhere. Perhaps you have these gentlemen's titles wrong.

409 One of my favourite cartoons was called 'Porterfield', and it generally revolved around business topics.  One showed a man at a desk, reading sales statistics, with a sign reading "Fullbean Paints" on the wall behind him.  "Well Porterfield," he said "I see we've sold 2,000 cans of Harvest Gold and 4,000 cans of Robin's-Egg Blue.  But we've yet to sell a single can of your Toilet White."

I thought he was going to die in early April. I talked with his doctor after six days and asked him to tell me the truth, on April 5 the odds were 50-50 heÕd pull through. He had strep infection in his blood, pneumonia and urinary tract. When they finally took him off the ventilator it was after ten days and he couldnÕt move. It was another week before they found infection was in his cervical spine, (neck) and the surgeon had to take out the infected discs. His life is in GodÕs hands and I believe that when God wants you itÕs your time. Thank you. Carol

My absolute favorite "Hey, why did the left shut up about this?" topic is SUVs. First, they were outraged. Then, they bought SUVs. Finally, they were silent.

For anyone with a sense of history, it is almost surreal to drive around Marin County or Berkeley, and count the SUVs.

I,too am cursed with the Y chromosome. What I do for a living is predicting, preventing and solving potential problems.

When my better half presents problems, I make the fatal mistake of trying to solve them.

I've complicated these situations by using logic. Logic doesn't have a chance against emotion.

I have been told that I shouldn't try to resolve the situation, I should just feel it.

I have further complicated things by saying " If you don't want the problem solved, don't tell me about it, call one of your sisters"

I realize that Marriage causes brain cell loss, because I was not THIS stupid when I was single. ( 20yrs in, yep I'm a moron)

My advice is, don't start until the local hardware store is open. On the other hand (unless a shut-off valve leaks) you have nothing to lose by starting to take things apart.

430 422 I have further complicated things by saying " If you don't want the problem solved, don't tell me about it, call one of your sisters"

Yeah, no. I had to go through all the steps here:

(1) You are telling me about a problem. You must want it solved.

(2) OK, you don't want it solved? What do you want? Oh, you just want me to listen? Can do.

(3) OK, I listened, and you're not happy. What do you want? Oh, you want me to say something?

(4) ...OK, the something I should say is not about solving the problem...

(5) I think I have it now. You want me to listen, you want me to say something, but what you want me to say is something that validates you? OK, got it.

(6) Wait, what is this "validate" thing exactly?

I'm somewhere in the middle of step (6), and I consider myself to be very advanced indeed...though that is a long way from mastery.

Posted by: Splunge at July 20, 2013 06:24 PM (bKA83)

431 Wanting to cheat is something entirely different. Posted by: Hrothgar at July 20, 2013 10:17 PM (XdnQT) He says he doesn't. And he brought me along to the third interview, I think partly to keep him honest, but also because I think he's a little taken back by the intensity of her pursuit. She was stunned to see me when she came to pick him up (yes, she came to pick him up at the airport). But I also think he's flattered by the attention, and I don't blame him, I really don't, but neither do I need this kind of bullshit at my age. (I'll be 50 in November) And I think this is why he wants us to get a house in Chapel Hill instead him getting a condo and me having a place in the mountains with weekend visits.
