The Secret Truth at the Heart of the Male-Female Dynamic
— Ace

Via @benk84's news dump, just a wonderful video of straightforward-thinking, low-drama dogs, terrorized by emotionally-volatile cats who pretend to be "Just Fine" but who actually aren't fine at all.

If you watch through to the end, you'll see the poor dogs -- reasonable, agreeable creatures who just want to live life without any problems -- are well-justified in fearing the cats.

42 Heh. I posted this on FB yesterday. My two now deceased dogs used to live in mortal terror of my three tiny little cats. One of the cats used to walk in and climb up on the sofa next to me and then turn and stare at the dog until the dog got up and left the room. When Muttsie snuck back into the room, the cat would disdainfully ignore the poor pooch. Until, of course, the dog got "too close", at which point the stare of death would being again.

There is nothing more amusing than watching a 90-pound dog pee itself because a 10-pound cat swiveled its head. Okay, watching Chris Matthews shit himself on national television might rank a wee bit higher, but that has not as yet happened.

Messing with that cat was not recommended.

And by that I mean give the cat a big old tongue lick right across the face if the cat swats your hind foot.  Because the cats will get the message when they've got dog spit right up their nose every time they pull that "swat you as you go by" stuff.

Animal rights activists are actively trying to free the animals, but what's this? Aliens are zapping them out of the zoo first! But the conservationist aliens are idiots too and they indirectly kill the animals they're zapping out of the zoo. There's a heavy "Who are the real animals" vibe to the whole thing too. It's half-baked, doesn't know which way it wants to go, and even has the Signing Gorilla as a woobie, who ends up getting killed. Yay?

115 Snow falling. In Australia. In summer. That is all

UPDATE: A day after we posted images of fresh summer snow falling across the Australian Alps, we've updated our original story with new images that show the ground getting whiter... and whiter... and whiter.

Thredbo resort in new South Wales is now in the very unusual position of desperately needing its snow to melt. Thredbo has a huge mountain bike event this weekend but the course is currently snow-covered. Hopefully, forecast warmer tempreatures will take care of things.

What's next ?

Dr Ray Stantz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!

Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...

Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the grave!

Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

Dog, having a soul, instinctively know this.

The only reason why those dogs are so terrified is because they know they can't fight back, and if they do, they will be abused even more.

172 I don't understand dogs. And I really do not understand dog owner's fetishization of shit. We have a dog and we understand each other: stay out of my way and I will stay out of yours. Which works out well. But when I meet other dog owners, things get weird. "Oh, what is she?", they'll ask. She's a mutt of some sort. Which works well for me. But then the other owner will go on about how her precious little snowflake is a "Cock-a-schnauza-a-poo" or "Corg-a-poo" or a "Collie-dach-a-poo" or some other poo thing. What's with all the poo? I used to think that it was short for Poodle, but I don't think that any more. I think it really is short for shit. Because a lot of dog owners, it seems to me, are really into shit. Wife and I will be at a dog park, listening to other owners recite off their breed names all ending with "poo", and then someone will spot a dog taking a shit. You know the scene. A thin, wiry, scrape of an animal, hunched over, sides and loins trembling, eyes bulging out of either side of its pointed head, as it uncoils a bag of chow at its owner's feet. And the dog owners will all stop mid-sentence to stare. And I swear to God that I have even seen these people lick their lips. Judas on Vespa delivering pizzas: what the hell is wrong with these people? That's really why I prefer cats. Cats shit in a box. In another room. Where I do not have to watch it. Good kitty. Maybe that's what the cats are doing in the video. They know that this fetish is wrong, and they are trying to tell the dog "For Purina's sake, man, show some self respect. They just want to watch you shit! Don't you see it? Don't do it! Don't let yourself be used this way!" And that's why, when the urgings of last night's kibble can no longer be ignored and the dog has to pass the cat, the cat takes a swipe at the dog. It's the cat's way of saying "Fine! Go! Go play your dirty game! You disgust me!"

I'd actually managed to suppress it from my memories until I was looking over the episode guide. --- I quit watching it during season 6 for the most part, save an occasional episode and DVDs. I think the only two post-Duchovny episodes I bothered to watch were the final one and the "Brady Bunch house" one shortly before that. The last episode I remember really liking would probably be the magician one with Ricky Jay where there were multiple con jobs going on and a bank robbery.

179 I liked that one for other reasons.

Mulder making his wish for "world peace", which makes everyone disappear, resulting in him running around the FBI office ranting at the genie saying that the problem isn't the wishes, but that she's a total bitch.

Cue wish #2, undoing wish #1, with Assistant Director Skinner asking Mulder WTF he's doing.

I also liked the one where the gigantic underground fungus slowly consumes people while giving them hallucinations as they are digested.  Several times during the episode, you think Mulder and Scully have woken up from their dream, but it's a dream within another dream.  I think that was the inspiration for "Inception".

183 Now when it comes to FAVORITE episodes, that's a hard one. I kind of adore the one with Luke Wilson. About the trailer park of vampires. What's your worst episode ever?

---------------

Not sure if I'd call it the worst, but the one that I recall with the most pointless plot was the one written by the cyberpunk author (can't remember if it was Bruce Sterling or William Gibson).  They spend half the episode trying to outwit a rogue AI so that they can load a virus (to crash it), and then the AI demands that they load the virus into it (gross simplification, mind you).

205 A cat's typical schedule looks something like this:

Wake up and complain to owner about the food situation.
Continue complaining, loudly, until  situation resolved.
Fuck with owner for making them 'work' for their food.
Nap.
Fuck with the dog(s).
Nap.
Fuck with the children for past injustices, like existing.
Nap.
Put on a campaign for better food situation.
Nap.
Complain about freshness of water supply.
Nap in the sun.
Fuck with the dog(s) some more.
Charge around house, or work on parkour skillz.
Nap.

I'm not sure what happens after that, as I'm taking MY nap. Until the little shit decides its time for a petting, which ruins MY nap.

Yes and no.  The problem was not just that the network was hooked into a "monster of the week" format, but McGavin, as executive producer, was producing, acting, directing occasionally and fighting for decent scripts, so that he simply burned out and wanted to get off the show.

A lot of the episodes are bad - "Mr. R.I.N.G," where a man with an obvious stocking over his head is supposed to be an android is awful, as is the final episode, which has a mama lizard trying to protect her eggs from construction workers.  "They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be," which has Kolchak encountering a flying saucer, is laughable.

"Horror in the Heights," where the monster takes the form of the person its victim most trusts, has its moments, as do Robert Zemeckis' "Chopper" and the witchcraft episode "The Trevi Collection."

YMMV.

Central African Republic government in dispute after coup. Christians being slaughtered like chickens by muslim rebels. UN has authorized French troops to intervene. Apparently the French need some back up and good ol Uncle Sam is providing logistical and humanitarian support. The French were busy somewhere else recently, (Ivory Coast) seems like there was another. but goggle only reports latest.

268 From the Formerly Great Britain:

A SHOP boss was arrested and quizzed by police for eight hours for cracking Nelson Mandela jokes on the internet.

Neil Phillips said he was fingerprinted, DNA-swabbed and had his computers seized.

The 44-year-old was held after posting: “My PC takes so long to shut down I’ve decided to call it Nelson Mandela.”

Another read: “Free Mandela – switch the power off.”

But police swooped after a councillor complained over the gags about the former South African leader, who passed away on Thursday, aged

French troops are better than the general French reputation in the US would suggest.  Their politicians, on the other hand...

270 I just don't get this identification with dogs. Dogs are emotional, prone to stupid enthusiasms, and crave the approval of their masters. They have little self respect. When faced with a threat they often cower unless they feel certain of victory. Cats are independent, self reliant, and generally don't like to be bothered. When attacked they make the life of their attacker a living hell. Of course as masters we prefer dogs, because they do what they are told, but why would we want to identify with them? I know all sorts of conservatives like Jonah Goldberg are terribly anti-cat, and pro dog, but I think they just hate cats because of a lingering authoritarianism.

If you die, your dog will sit by your body and mourn.

Your cat will eat your face and then wander off.

and who brought Cholera to Haiti after the earthquake?

280 Actually this anti-cat line blinds us to the French's virtues. France is like a cat, they are out for themselves, but they are hardly cowards. They have a lot more balls than the other Europeans. Everyone likes the limeys so much, but they are often bunch of pantywaists, sure the occasional ballsy Brit still exists, but the French have a whole army of those types too. Their Reds have more fight in them than any Tory Englishman, after all it was a French socialist who ordered the sinking of a Greenpeace ship for objecting to nuclear testing. People should stop equating not being with us to cowardice

Posted by: Roy at December 09, 2013 10:43 AM (75fUy)

281 The French founded Detroit, they also founded New Orleans and St. louis. Notice a trend here? Montreal isn't looking too good either.... And it was Nepalis who brought cholera to Haiti, not the French.

290 We have 8 cats, and all of them are loving and friendly. One of them is sitting on my lap right now, purring away (and no, he's not forcing me to write this). We don't currently have a dog. Sometimes, though, we have doggy visitors. A couple of the cats always try to make friends with any dogs which come into the house. Most of the cats just avoid dogs. Only one of the cats actively antagonizes them, but it's because she's defending what she sees as her territory from an aggressor.

On the whole, I think I prefer the personality and independence of cats to that of dogs. They are not pets so much as companions. And really, I admire the fact that in spite of their small size, they are usually "top dog" in any multi-pet household!
