— Ace Specifically, humor at someone else's expense. Mild-mannered humor or self-deprecating humor doesn't need this sort of a negotiation.
I've talked about this before but never this clearly.
Laughter can be modeled as a three-party game in which the parties bargain for inclusion in a two-party coalition (wit and listener) that excludes the third (the butt). No one party can dictate what is risible. Instead, the selection of butts is a matter of negotiation between wit and listener. The wit proposes a butt for laughter, and this offer may be accepted by the listener through a return of laughter or rejected through silence. In such a laughter exchange, individuals may be seen to trade off butts through implicit agreements about who is risible. These bargains determine what counts as a comic vice...
I've mentioned that while the joke-teller (the "wit") is free to make any joke he likes, only the listeners, in concert with him, can decide together that the joke works or is funny or that the target is a valid one (and targeted for the right reasons).
Sometimes people will propose just "joking about how dumb Obama is," and while I agree he is kind of dumb, I don't see that as a likely avenue for widespread transmission of the idea. Too many people would disagree that that's a valid target, and hence, wouldn't laugh. And hence, while the joke may work for a smaller audience (engaged conservative partisans) it would fail at the purpose for which it is deployed (shifting the conventional wisdom of the public).*
Even though it wasn't humorous, I'm pretty confident a similar social bargaining principle underlay Romney's frequent statements that "Obama is a nice guy, but he's in over his head." I think he believed (and polling would back him up) that Obama was adjudged a "nice guy" by 55% of the public, but only a minority had confidence in his ability to do the job to which he was elected. Ergo, he made the case upon which Obama was vulnerable and avoided the case which would be more difficult.
This post is very apropos given that leftists around the blogosphere are right now claiming "I just don't see why Michelle Malkin's funny dances are funny." Well, the media -- which swears it's not liberal -- doesn't understand how anything at all about Obama or liberalism could possibly be funny. They don't agree that these things have any "comedic vice" in them at all to be valid targets of joking.
Thus, the stone-faced act.
* There's also a misguided anti-racism that thwarts such a joke. Too many people would automatically think "Gee I can never say a black person is dumb, that would be racist" without pausing to consider the more sophisticated idea that that itself is racially condescending -- that such a "rule" that black folks can never be, for reasons best left unsaid, treated Just Like Everyone Else, is itself a bit racist.
Obviously you wouldn't want to have to explain that in the middle of your joke!

Obama's philosophy is that if you tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you said except with the caveat that the MSM will disremember it for you.

Ace, it just seems to me (personal anecdote here, based purely upon observation) that conservatives as a whole are a lot happier than liberals. Yes, we morons make jokes and make fun of the various liberals out there, poking at them and deriding them, but we generally have a good time, and laugh and joke about other things- eg. SMOD, crossbows v long bows, etc. and just seem to get along (kind of like a college freshman dormitory, if you will) and this is generally a fun and happy place to be.
On the other hand, liberals seem to be naturally unhappy people. The only fun they seem to have is making fun of conservatives, and saying nasty things about them. That seems to be about the extent (and ability) of their "comedy"; otherwise, they just sit around glaring at one another and whining about how unfair things are, and deluding each other about how great the SCOAMF is.

Item number 14423566 on the list of liberal hypocrisy. Jokes about liberalism "just aren't funny"
Hence the crash and burn of the Goode Family. Conservatives could laugh at Hank Hill, even though Hill represented the values of most conservatives. Liberals can't laugh at Gerald Goode because he represents their values.
Hence liberals don't possess the sense of humor they say conservatives should have.

I have to disagree on this point, ace. The fact is, throughout this country's history the office of the President has been ripe for humor. As has been mentioned on this blog before, some of SNL's funniest skits were their politically-based ones. Regardless of your political bent it was easy to laugh at Drew Carrey's Bush or Perot, or Phil Hartman's Reagan, or whatshisname's Gore (I can never, ever, EVER remember his damn name). Joking about the President and his appointees is as American as apple pie, regardless of whether or not it shifts the public's conventional wisdom about the person in office. The public EXPECTS it.
Your point about race is true, but all the more damning. If the humor community (if we call them that) finds they need to fall back on, "We can't make jokes about Obama because he's black, and even jokes that have nothing to do with his skin color would be considered racist," then they're already past help and it's pointless to even bother talking about them.
I'm not a big fan of taboo humor, but I'm also aware that humor which pushes the envelope is humor that makes people think and makes them talk. If the humor community has given up not just on pushing the envelope, but has created its OWN envelope which it then refuses to push (that being that Obama jokes are verboten), then it's time to find some different funnymen (and women).

Michelle Malkin defended the use of internment camps for Japanese-Americans during WWII because, according to her research, there were many in that community whose loyalties were questionable and thus posed a real security threat early in the war when fears of mainland invasion were reasonably well-grounded. Insofar as I know, she has never advocated rounding up and interning Muslims.
Malkin is also a pioneer in conservative new media, and is the founder of both Hot Air and Twitchy. She is also very telegenic and serves an excellent conservative face and voice in national media outlets. She's a solid writer, as well.
I think she's great, in short. If we need new voices, we need more like hers.

It's also why their jokes about us never work.
"I'm from the government and I'm here to help" is FUNNY, because it perfectly describes everyone's shared experience with government bureaucracy. The left is the wing of nanny staters, but even THEY have to go through the DMV, the IRS, the EPA...
On the other hand, "Teabaggers," while humorous in a gutter-level way, is completely devoid from the truth. No one can look at the blue-haired grandmas with their beach chairs and pitchers of lemonade who make up a solid chunk of your average TEA Party rally and think "Teabaggers" is anything but a reflection of the idiots who coined the term.

There's an old saying that as soon as you have Two People, you have Society, and as soon as you have the Third person, you have Politics.
And the sad part is, the reason you'll have politics is because one of those three people will want to control the other two.

Well, to be fair, Karl Pilkington really does seem to be an idiot. He says a lot of imbecilic things. It's not like Ricky Gervais is a stealth conservative.
I laugh at him even as I hold the standard conventions that Gervais and Stephen Merchant espouse in contempt.

I understand what you mean. However the whole "we're funny and truthful and they aren't" is perfectly divided among political lines. Liberals think the same exact thing in reverse. I'd like to think that is because we are just so right, and they can't hack it, but more than likely it is the simple fact that people just plain don't like being the butt of the joke.

As far as your points re: Malkin and internment (either for the Japanese in WWII or American Muslims today), this is dead on. It was a stupid position, it was even stupider to write an idiotic book defending the stupid position, and yes, it (deservedly) caused significant damage her credibility as a public face of conservatism. She's done a lot since then, but she will always be thought of in many quarters as "that silly woman who defended Japanese internment in the context of recommending analogous treatment for Muslims"...and why shouldn't she be?
But...but...Malkin is not dumb. A smart person is perfectly capable of taking (and vociferously defending) a retardedly stupid or immoral political position...surely I don't have to cite to examples here. What I give Malkin credit for is her internet entrepreneurship. When Twitchy first launched I thought to myself "dear lord, what a dumb idea...it'll never last." Now I realize I'm clicking through to it at least four or five times a week, and that their Twitter aggregation actually fills a gap and adds value.
I don't want Michelle Malkin put forth as the face of conservatism, for the simple reason that she actively advocates for things that are morally reprehensible (and she's a bad historian, to boot). But she's not some sort of dead-weight loss, and if conservatives are stuck deep in a hole in terms of internet infrastructure, it's people like Malkin who are taking the first steps towards digging us out of it, for which she should be saluted.

Still, I don't think liberals are being intentionally dense in this case based on a categorical rejection of mockery of Her Eminence, though that is a preexisting impediment: Romney had great biting lines at the Alfred Smith dinner and many liberals got sulky, for example. I think liberals don't even see what the hook is to be offended or protective in this case. They find Michelle's dancing to be simply fun and endearing.
Without seeing the hook there, some context for why her dancing would be a basis of humor, they can't even get offended. I think there is a difference between not getting a joke and getting offended based on the target. For instance, hobbling around while throwing candy into the air in an attempt to portray Mother Theresa, perhaps as a commentary on religious charity would be offensive to many based on who the butt of the joke is. They also may not get the joke, but that takes a back seat to the first objection.
In this case, liberals don't see what the hook is. And once you have to explain it...you just seem kind of belligerent, in that the problems conservatives have may seem to go beyond policy and into something more personal.
Having a favorable impression of someone and thus not getting a joke versus rejecting any jokes of a favored person can be two sides of the same coin, but at least here, I think liberals just really don't get they why (not the who) of the joke.
