Many state constitutions prohibit the alteration of pension benefits once they have been earned. Thus, if a bankruptcy judge determines that benefit payouts must be decreased or eliminated, that is in violation of the state Constitution. You can argue that the US Federal bankruptcy laws override that, but actually that issue has yet to be resolved. So the first stop will be at the State supreme court level, where State constitution issues are hashed out. If its found that the State Constitutions do, in fact, protect pension payouts, I fully expect the issue to move up to Federal court to see if Federal law trumps state laws in this respect.

In normal times I would agree with this. Now I think it's largely a function of nepotism which is about the only way anyone is getting a decent job these days. Most of the people out of work are poorer and don't have the ability to tip their relatives to job openings any more.

Water is unusual in that ice is actually less dense as a solid than it is as a liquid.  Normally, the reverse is true.  That's why ice floats.   Life on earth would not be possible if water behaved "normally".

For another, they are *also* very often in fairly dense urban areas: they could walk or ride a bike to work to cover that "reliable transportation" issue. Some could even ride the bus or subway. Then the type of work: I'm certain some is patronage- kids getting work because Daddy owns (or is highly placed in) the company. But a lot of it *is* work flipping burgers, or making pizzas, or whatever.

.That's why we moved away from Connecticut.  Saw an article in the local paper one day about a retired State Trooper Sergeant that was going to be hired as the new School Resource Officer.  They made a big deal out of the savings the town would get for not having to pay for any benefits because his state retirement plan covered them.  He was pulling in full medical with no co-pays and $105,000 a year from the State for his retirement at 30 years.  I was stunned.  I thought that was a misprint and decided to find out what kind of retirement benefits they actually get.  Found out they are on a high three system where overtime counts to their pension.  And the more senior people get the overtime hours to pad their retirements to the point they can get more than their base salary in retirement.  It is insane and CT only has 32% of their pensions funded.

Even without the union contracts, it is in the interest of unions to increase the minimum wage because of basic Econ 101 reasons.  Minimum wage workers tend to do unskilled labor.  Unions tend to be skilled laborers.  When you need a hole dug you can hire a bunch of minimum wage guys with shovels or you can hire one union guy with a backhoe.  If the minimum wage guys are cheap enough, that is the rational economic choice.  If the minimum wage is raised high enough, the guy in the backhoe looks more economically attractive.

At one time, a legally-mandated minimum wage reduced the threat that unskilled workers presented to skilled unionized workers. The alternative to a $40/hr. heavy equipment operator with a $400/day excavator was ten high school dropouts with  shovels.  Nowadays, private-sector unions do not have the muscle they once did. NAFTA and GATT killed private-sector manufacturing unions. Minimum wage laws today protect the jobs of public sector workers. Teachers gain from the reduction in the relative opportunity cost to teens and young adults of the time that they spend in school and social workers gain from the expansion in the rolls of unemployed welfare cases.  That's my guess, anyway.

Wow. I knew that stats on the part-time jobs vs. full time and it still astounds me to see it in print. Prolly cause Monty is the only one willing to print it!
3 of my teens are working, 2 full time and going to school. I work for free with the spouse.

We are trying to sell a CPA practice...can you imagine that people don't want to take a risk...(snark)!!! It's grown by 100k since we bought it with low client attrition and several big contracted clients. This is what working hard gets us- so lying down is not an option. But we are fucked in every other sense of the word. Still can't get healthcare or a mortgage re-fi because of being self-employed and business follows me home because I sleep with the boss.
Why do I do it? Because I have four kids and grandkids someday to leave behind a better place than I see now. But, man does it suck sometimes.

But once you're 16, I expect you to have a paying job within a 10 minute drive.  I'll drive, until you get your license - no charge. 

I worked; your mother worked; you're going to work.  Get used to it.

Oh, and one other thing: I'm not paying one-thin-dime for any college degree that isn't occupational training.  Get a degree in Chemistry, Therapy, Engineering, Nursing, and maybe (maybe) business and I'm on board.  Get it in Sociology or the Humanities?  You'd better have enough money to pay for that ride yourself... and plan on moving out when you get it.

Doom is real, but there are ways through it.  They're not easy, but then again... neither is mining coal, and plenty of our ancestors and peers (and even us) do that.  Work is hard.  Embrace it.
