— Ace Watching "fiscal conservative" Chris Christie fail to say one word about those who demand that relief for his state be bought with unrelated spending for their own states, which weren't hit by catastrophe -- shouldn't it be noted that Lisa Murkowski and Don Young of Alaska won't vote for those left homeless by Sandy until some local businesses get their "cut"? -- it occurs to me that he is accommodating himself to reality.
The reality is vox populi, vox dei -- the voice of the people is the voice of God. And the voice of this particular shabby god has decreed that we shall be financially reckless and we should go through a national bankruptcy, and there's no sense trying to avoid it, so we'll just run up a huge tab buying multiple 65 inch 3D tvs before we crash.
Given that the people wish to spend money they do not have, and soon will not have (for all the same reasons that people with bad credit can't rent a car -- your ability to borrow is precisely related to your projected future ability to make good on your loans), and will not be diverted from this disastrous course, what can anyone do?
This Guy Makes the Same Analogy: Kids, we're going shopping! We will worry about the long-term consequences -- such as being without a home or college fund or creditworthiness to secure loans for same -- later.
But for now, let's go get a few of those sweet 3D TV's and watch Pirates of the Caribbean IV.
You'll think I'm a wonderful, well-providing father... for the next month or so.
After that, you may hold a different opinion of me. Major negative changes in circumstance tend to do that.
But for now-- 3D TVs. Have you ever seen such a clear, sort of three dimensional picture? Aren't I your hero? At this moment, I mean.

The logical flaw in this argument is that the people who wish to spend the money are not the same people that will be expected to make good on the loans. Those of us who live on 75% of our pay, and those who are not yet born are the ones who will make good on the loans, and those of us who watch 9 hours of television per day, shop at WalMart on the first day of the month when the EBT card is reloaded, and want free condoms are the ones doing the borrowing.

A few years, unfortunately. Japan has to implode first and then Europe. And while that's happening money will flood into the US bond market because relatively speaking it will appear "safe". And Bernanke will think he's a genius, and Congress and TFG will think there are no consequences because they can get all the free money they want. Until they can't.

This makes me sad in my heart because I've actually seen this play out in real life to someone I know. I said the best solution was a crash of the American economy sooner rather than later and her vote was the right choice. I asked for the lady to relay my appreciation that she is raising taxes and adding to the debt, and to please add as much as often as possible in the near future and raise my taxes as much and as high as possible.
The woman laughed, stammered a bit, and I reiterated that we need to go big or go home with this spending and bring a larger percentage of the population under the governments care.

I don't like what all that is going on makes me think about certain races and classes. But, I ain't going to deny reality either.

And we are in a cold riot right now.
Your safest bet is to plan for 7 to 10 years of this. Learn how to make money on the side. Grey to illegal is better.

Credit by itself it's a bad thing. I can put all my groceries, bills, and whatnot on my credit card to take what would be a set of dispersed payments that have no real connection to when I receive my paycheck and condense them down into a single monthly payment which lines up nicely with when I receive my paycheck.
Thus I'm not stuck in the "Well crap, Grocery shopping falls on the 28th, but I don't get my check until the 31st."
Granted, you could accomplish the same thing with a sufficient savings account, but said savings account would also have to be easily accessed (i.e. you're savings couldn't be in Gold, stocks, or even an CD. And forget automatic deposits into hard to get to forms of savings.)
What went all pear-shaped was when people began acting like credit was a form of income.

Bread and Circuses killed the Roman Republic. Why would ours be any different? People haven't changed all that much have they? From Rome, to Nietzsche to Foucault...no change.
Ergo, History will repeat itself of course. The populace will continue to vote for those who provide them bread and blood. Meanwhile the only way to bind future congresses is with an amendment. I don't know how to do it, but frankly it's either that, or AllenG's divorce. The latter looks more probably right now to be sure.
(FWIW, state BBAs with no federal one just shift the problem. States run out of money, and their congress critters are more than happy to go find it for them.)

172 The problem is that New Jersey and New York give an enormous amount of money to the federal government not the least of which is their income tax. They pay enormous state and city taxes and school taxes. Probably the most taxed individuals in the country. They feel they've paid for everything all over the country without a peep and now when they need the help, you guys want to turn your back on them cause you don't like them. Will they land on their feet without the federal aid, yep you betcha they will. They'll come back better than ever. But, that's not the issue. They paid in for years and years and get little back and now that their turn has come you selfish sots want to turn your back on them.

If you don't want to cut a fellow some slack, fine, but don't pretend like people can't ask questions and get straight answers. If I wanted the wikipedia answer, I would have gone to wikipedia. I was asking here because there are a lot of subtleties in interpreting history that don't always come through at wikipedia or other academic sources with a bias against the Southern point of view.
I wasn't trying to "sound smart", I was asking how public opinion on the inevitability of the Civil War evolved because I didn't know the answer.

The liberal preference is so obviously a tell for how intellectually insecure they are and that the only way they can get that rush of feeling superior is to try to make someone else look bad. For most of human history, this has been known as "poor character".

The Vietnamese kid might have had the following thought: Why does it make sense that pre-existing conditions get covered under an insurance policy that I get from my employer but I can't purchase such a policy myself. Pre-existing conditions are the same and no one seems to be bothered by mandatory coverage under one policy but it is communist to mandate the coverage under the latter scenario. Maybe the R's could have done something about that "one little thing" he cared about but they were too busy busting the budget in the Bush Era to worry about such things. Obama has just doubled down and uses all the issues that could have been Republican to do it.

The crap has hit the fan for the Greeks. Last I read there weren't many of them blaming the people who provided them with free stuff that there was no money to pay for. And not many of the citizenry stepping up and saying, enough is enough, time to pay the piper.

It is always ridiculous to me to hear "fair share" not accompanied by a specific number and the rationale for that number.
I'd also love to hear the GOP talk about who benefits from spending and at what levels. Why should someone who costs the government $50K/year in benefits have to pay $100K/year in taxes? I'm not saying that there needs to be a strict "if you pay $1 in taxes, you should get $1 in benefits" but at the upper levels, it gets ridiculous to contrast how much is paid in tax vs. the amount of benefit that person or household gets from those taxes paid. It basically amounts to theft from high earners at this point and I think that most people would be a little uneasy with justifying that to themselves if the numbers were laid out for them. Not to mention what diverting resources from high-income savers to low-income consumers does to long-term capital formation. Sometimes it seems like if it were up to the Left, there would be no savings and everything would go to boost short-term consumption.

The point is more about aggregate preferences and that if conservatives didn't exist, liberals would have to make them up to get that rush of superiority. If liberals didn't exist, conservatives would spend their time watching even more college football and less time making fun of stupid liberals.

I have lately been thinking that one of the biggest problems facing this nation is that so much of it's direction is coming from people with a New York mindset. The City of New York is located such that it was inevitable that it would be wealthy. Wealthy people become disconnected from a grounded reality because the consequences of bad decisions for them are non life threatening, whereas for a poor person they might very well be fatal.
Posted by: DiogenesLamp at January 02, 2013 01:23 PM (bb5+k)
Probably not. The economic blockades and embargoes were strangling the South. Meanwhile, a guerilla force doesn't stop a large army that can march where it wants and burn every damned city they come to. The South would have ended up pretty much the same way but worse -- in ashes.

I agree totally. The South surrendered and except for some rather disgraceful actions by the North, AKA not giving Lee his citizenship or property back until the courts required them too, the surrender went very well.
Yankees came down, took all our property and installed their own government and generally occupied and plundered the South for 30 years.
It was a lot of fun. We really enjoyed it, but we had no chance of winning a guerrilla war. Simply put, we had too little men left to fight.
