Media Tales
— Gabriel Malor

As Andy noted this morning, the Denver Post was busy scrubbing the Colorado school shooter's socialist beliefs from its own reporting. On Twitter, I reviewed the media's history of convenient speculation and outright lies when it comes to the perpetrators of violence.

Sparkman wanted it to look like he'd been murdered so his family could collect on his life insurance.

Several media outlets simply scrubbed Stack's quotation from the Communist Manifesto out of their publications of his suicide screed.

Dr. Amy Bishop turned out to be a potential serial killer after scrutiny revealed the unusual shotgun killing of her brother decades earlier. She was also a registered Democrat suffering from suicidal thoughts related to her failure to obtain tenure.

To this very day, if you type "John Patrick Bedell" into Google, the very first autofill suggestion is "John Patrick Bedell tea party." That's not deliberate malice from Google. The predictive search is based on how often a word or phrase was searched. In other words, folks were so desperate to find out if Bedell was a tea partier, they taught Google to watch for it.

Mayor Bloomberg, without any information about the bomber at all, decided to speculate that it was someone upset about the new healthcare law. And nobody thought to question him on that.

Even better: the Lefty art student off his meds had actually done some work for the PR firm hired to promote the Ground Zero Mosque.

Lee was a particularly toxic example of leftwing nutbaggery. He was once convicted for smuggling illegal aliens into the United States. He wrote in his manifesto that he wanted to save the planet by "stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies!"

That's one I had forgotten about. Thank you to @verumserum for the reminder.

The Tucson shooting set off my very first rant and list of media myths about nonexistent right-wing violence.

I dusted off and added to the list following ABC's Brian Ross' beclowning and was asked to write it up for an op-ed in the NYPost.

This was the case of the media that didn't bark. A politically-motivated shooting in the media's own backyard. They grudgingly covered the shooting itself, but were curiously quiet about Corkins' motive in targeting FRC, which he explicitly said was based on the Southern Poverty Law Center's target list.

Twitter pal Amy Otto (@CAAmyO) reminded me that should have been "Obama-voting jihadist scum." Good point. The Tsarnaev's had the whole profile of modern American mass killers: jihadists, leftists, nutters.

Media's desire to pin violence on the right is so overwhelming they're actually rewriting history to do it.

In 2012, I wrote:

The media's habitual blaming of the political right is endemic and incurable. Media figures sincerely believe the right wing is violent, so naturally assume that violent people must be right-wing. This wonÂ’t be the last time they make that mistake.

I'm telling you again: this won't be the last time I have to pull out this list.

3 You leave out too many Democrat/ Leftwing connections. I've had this discussion elsewhere many months ago, and I did a bit of research at the time. As I recall, there is plenty of evidence indicating that people such as Jared Loughner were left wing Socialist/Democrat kooks. Some things have to be read as proxies for Democrat leaning, such as this latest shooter's mother working for the Education system. It's not foolproof, but it generally holds true.

Posted by: D-Lamp at December 14, 2013 11:56 AM (bb5+k)

4 How many people actually find out the actual backgrounds of the shooters, though? For every person who does there are probably many more who hear the immediately-thereafter "analysis" and carry on thinking it was motivated by right-wing "hate".

5 Thank you, Gabe. I can also go back to the Beltway Sniper case in 2002, probably the most prolonged example of this. He was profiled and psychoanalyzed in absentia until he was found to be a black Muslim with a teenaged sidekick. Silence. Loughner wasn't really apolitical. He had expressed some specific venom towards George W. Bush, but maybe just because it was fashionable.

15 Good post Gabe!

I wonder how many recent shooters can be, at least loosely, connected to more right wing views. I suppose the obvious choice would be Tim McVeigh but to be honest I never looked into his history too much.

There was a Hmong shooter in MN I think, never heard much about his politics.

They not only refuse to do that job, they've turned themselves into destructionist propagandists.

Why do we allow them to continue with the perks and privileges?

32 There are very few widely-held philosophies that glorify violence in general terms. One is Islam and the other is Communism. And the lefties don't like it, but their worldview is wholly Marxist. In addition, they believe that the ends justify the means and have no independent moral guide. So you are going to find people who have no compunctions about killing, especially if they believe it will accomplish a moral goal.

Conservatives are essentially driven by a belief in a  set of principles, thus they cannot rationally support individuals or programs that are unprincipled.

Progressives are essentially driven by a belief that they possess the secret to managing a utopian society, thus they are never distracted by messy principles or imperfect spokesmen, and can easily support any individual or program that lets them approach their real goal of absolute power over others.

Posted by: Hrothgar at December 14, 2013 12:20 PM (o3MSL)

35 The only way spree killing comes from our side is from a mentally ill person who, in their lucid moments, agree with us. So far as I am aware, that hasn't *actually* happened anywhere, anytime in America, whereas from the Left, it's a fucking common occurrence.

36 >>> 25 Good post, but the timing seems to mean that it will not be as widely read as it should be. ... You're absolutely right. As Gabe noted with Patrick Bedell, "history" will only record the immediate reporting and folks only remember the phony right wing profile/ trend of violence storyline. Even when there is obligatory follow up reporting, it's buried and minimized. Another great example is the woman that got shot a couple of months ago in DC for what amounted to be nothing more than reckless driving. As soon as the media's preferred storyline of "right wing terrorist tries to drive car through White House barrier because of Republican shutdown and Tea Party hate" fell apart, all reporting stopped. 10 years from now, all anyone will remember will be that some nut tried to drive through barriers while Tea Party folks were protesting Obamacades during a Republican shutdown.

As a matter of fact, I went researching how many famous serial killers were pot smokers, and it turns out to be a hell of a lot of them. I don't necessarily believe that using pot is a correlation for mass murder, I was just doing it to piss him off because he makes a habit of making unfair arguments. I just wanted to show him how it felt to be on the receiving end of an unfair argument.

45 Excellent job, Gabe, and I echo the suggestion for a permanent sidebar link. I'm currently reading "American Betrayal" by Diana West. I'm only about 1/3 through it, but it's an eye-opener. She is connecting the dots between the heavy Communist infiltration of the US government in the 30s and 40s (which is beyond dispute) and the reticence of Western intellectuals and media to criticize Soviet crimes. For example, Western reporters were colluding with Soviet propaganda officials to cover up the Ukrainian famine in 1933. It wasn't just Walter Duranty, not by a long shot. In other words, Western media was already denying Communist mass murder before Hitler even got to the on-deck circle.

46 It's intentional - it's planting the idea that Tea Party and conservative people are crazy, violent scum. People forget the details, or worse, the follow-up reports contradicting the Tea Party violence speculation, and so the narrarive is born.

A decade from now it will be conventional wisdom that *of course* they're all violent, they've be shooting up places randomly for, like, forever. Oh, and Lincoln was a Democrat and the Democrats passed the Civil Rights Act against Republican opposition.

Posted by: D-Lamp at December 14, 2013 04:27 PM (bb5+k) I disagree just slightly. I don't think it's outright stupidity. I think it's laziness. It's just easier not to take the time and make the effort to, you know, learn some shit. A couple members of my wife's family voted for TFG. They're both very intelligent. Work for the NSA. When my FIL went all splodey and "how can you vote for him after what he did in Benghazi to State Dept people???"Â….they had no idea what he was talking about. They go to work, they come home, they go to their kids' sporting events or help grandma or whatever the mundane everyday details of life need to be done that day. They don't take the time to sit down and learn.

Where are the navel-gazing articles on Slate, the New Republic, etc. asking why so many crazies are attracted to the Left? Are they so inured in groupthink that it doesn't bother them, even a little, that so many of these incidents are committed by Lefties? Maybe it's that they like the violent ones being the vanguard. For now, with their media protectors, they can enjoy the intimidation that the violence brings while they are free to condemn it...if asked. I think there is a lot of this among Muslims as well.

I think many Americans are of the opinion that if something is important, the Media will tell them about it. The idea that the media will deliberately leave them in the dark is not an idea they even consider. Once again, one party control of all mass communications is a National Security threat.

53 Also notable: - The initial storyline is always "right wing terrorist" - As soon as that falls apart: a) Media blackout, or b) Nutcase is recast by the media as a "victim" and/or "misunderstood hero" of some sort. "Hate", "terrorism", and any personal responsibility of the perpetrator is entirely erased in favor of blaming society, metal illness, gun laws or other bullshit. Killing people is never the perpetrator's fault if he or she is a leftist or Muslim. Heck, even the 9/11 hijackers have been recast as poor, misunderstood victims motivated by America's arrogance, interference in their culture, and lack of respect for their "religion of peace". Guns don't kill people. Right wing terrorists that oppose Obama and gun laws do.

It's my recollection that McVeigh was taking revenge for the actions of the Clinton government in basically murdering the Branch Davidians at Waco. And he was sort of orbiting that pole of crazy where right-wing anarchists and left-wing anarchists are circling. The Oort Cloud of crazy.

I can get frustrated with such people, like my dad. He's conservative like me, but he absolutely does not seek out any info. Anything he knows is by osmosis either from me, his acquaintances, or the media.  Though he at least has the excuse of not being able to use the internet because he's prehistoric and doesn't own a computer.

I guess certain personality types can cope with that kind of information gathering better than others, but damnit, noone said keeping a free society was easy. If too many people don't stay vigilant enough, what we are going through now is what we get.

Yelling. Shouting. His debate coach tells him to knock it off, and he shouts down his debate coach. Debate coach gets him suspended from school and demotes him on the debate team He goes back to school, when he is suspended, to get something out of his locker but has trouble unlocking it. He freaks out, banging on the locker and shouting The next day he shows up to murder the coach and bomb the school. That's what happened in my narrative

98 "The media's habitual blaming of the political right is endemic and incurable. Media figures sincerely believe the right wing is violent, so naturally assume that violent people must be right-wing. This wonÂ’t be the last time they make that mistake." Leftist propagandists/demagogues/"community organizers" comprehend the fundamentally heuristic nature of human, and especially "mass" thought. They also view people as little more than walking neural nets, and "train"/condition them accordingly. But propagandists/demagogues are prone to viewing themselves as elites/the vanguard and flattering themselves and their egos in all sorts of other ways, and therefore don't necessarily internalize the memes they propagate in the least. And, tangentially, Stalin and Mao, of course, murdered about 90 million people. And that's been completely "air brushed out of history." Because Altruism, Good Intentions, and Naivete. Later.

149 Too late to this party, but why can't we get some lawyers to file a class action suit against ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN and those that slander right wingers and the tea party? We have seen time and again, stories that readily identify Republicans in the first paragraph of a news story, if not in the first line or headline (Lamar Alexander's aid or whatever he was), but when it is a known dem, nada. Then there are all of Gabe's examples, baseless slander. It's fraud, slander, and journalitic malpractice and it needs to stop.

150 Every moron needs to have this list handy (simple Word file or bookmark) and paste the shit out of it on your social media/message boards/whatever the next time something like this happens.

Fight back and flood the zone.

151 May need to create another list documenting all the recent instances of "hate crimes" that were perpetrated by the "victims" in order to drum up some sympathy and publicity. The "victims" all happen to be part of some group (gays, blacks, etc.) that has special victimhood status within the Democrap party.

154 Nov 2010. After a threatening email causes schools  in Broward Co. to be closed, and the media blames "crazed tea bagger", leftist and green party member Ellisa Martinez is arrested.

155 I wonder if James von Brunn fits. I don't recall that the media had him as a right wing nut job out the gate, but he turned out to be a Holocaust denier, was (predictably) fond of Hitler, a white supremacist and a bit of a 9/11 troofer. The sainted SPLC has no trouble describing him as a 'neo-Nazi' and lumping him with their notion of the radical right (their term).
