Amnesty is not Conservative. For a whole host of reasons- from fiscal, to philosophical, from political, to practical- Amnesty is actively bad. It increases the costs to the State, as well as to the rest of the nation (yay! "matching" funds!). In addition, it further increases dependence on the state. The Legislature had already taken care of that for her by not passing a Medicaid expansion. What you seem to be missing here -and I'm going to pretend like I think you're missing it as an oversight, and not on purpose- is that all that Conservatives need to do to get the "most conservative option that can be accomplished" is -nothing. Sure, Senate Republicans would have to stand-fast against "Immigration Reform" to block its passage, but that's something they could do (if they wanted). There's not some Conservative Replacement bill they have to pass- they just have to refuse to pass this one. You also seem to be missing that this is not some "well, it's going to happen anyway, so I might as well make it better," it's that these filthy quislings are actively pushing for these non-Conservative approaches. Amnesty was dead in the Senate until Rubio submitted his plan. Medicaid Expansion was dead in AZ until Jan Brewer called a special session just to pass it. Existing law as written makes it illegal to ask the citizenship of people applying for welfare.  Existing law makes deportation a long and expensive process even for convicted criminals.  Existing law hamstrings border patrol and local authorities from making the border secure. 

 

Existing law is a mismatched quilt of poorly thought out cures to problems that might or might not have existed.  Immigration reform is a chance to make the laws work in a conservative way.

 

For some reason, no one seems to get the fact that things can be changed that make things more conservative.  The basic premise of all things political is this:

 

Liberal care about how something looks, conservatives care about how things work.

 

Just like "gun control".  No conservative on earth (or liberal, or anyone else) wants to sell guns to criminals or crazies.  That is simply a given.  There is no argument.  Obama wanted to seize all assault rifles, get limits on large capacity clips and eventually get all handguns.  He and the rest of the democrats overreached after Newtown and he lost big time.

 

His only way to save face was to get a provision that would look like he did something without actually doing anything.  In exchange for saving face, he and the democrats were willing to give up just about anything.

 

Toomey was there ready to cut a deal that would have cost us nothing an codified everything the NRA could want for the next 3 or 4 decades.  All he had to do was put it on paper.

 

Immigration is the same way.  Want to help the cause?  Put a provision into the bill that any newly legalized person caught voting will be immediately deported.  Who could argue with that?  What newly legalized mexican is going to risk it in the next election?

 

There are a hundred changes that could be put into a new immigration bill that the make things far more conservative friendly than they are now.  All we need to do is insist they are put in and back our team passing it.

jwest, your characterization of the "just enforce the law" situation is completely inaccurate

 

 without going into the boring details, there is plenty of legal authority at the federal level to enforce existing laws that would make today's situation of mass illegal alien presence totally infeasible (i.e., it would attrit away quickly)

 

and that's WITHOUT merely the active federal malfeasance of illegal EOs with the effect of gutting existing laws, or coddling jurisdictions that openly flout the law ("sanctuary cities")

 

seems on most issues, if you're not being disengenuous, you're simply not very wise in the ways of either policy implementation or Beltway politics - oh, and your absurd contention on the idiotic Toomey gun gambit illustrates both failings rather spectacularly

 

back on topic - several commenters above noted the inappropriate tone and conduct of this president - he has been, as none in my lifetime, dramatically un-presidential, almost non-stop.  the examples defy memory or a short listing (most of the "punish your enemies" and vote "for revenge" comments all will remember from the last two election cycles).  so far - so far! - the most complete and neatly packaged collection of am-I-really-seeing-this outrages (by the pres, the govt., and the press) has to be Benghazi.  every single element of that debacle exceeds the failures/scandals of administrations going back two generations - together they form a sort of super-nova of incompetence and dishonesty, not to mention complete alienation from every essential American and constitutional sensibility

 

 

200 Hayak had it right in Road to Serfdom, in his chapter on why "The Worst Come Out On Top" of totalitarian regimes. Basically, the requirements of success in a totalitarian society (or ideological clique) is that the person have an infinite capacity to justify the worst means in pursuit of absolute power. This effectively describes a person without a lodestar except an infinite capacity to justify their actions. Yup.
