— Ace A left that is unashamed to speak pretty openly about simply removing decision-making from people, on the theory that thought, decisions, choice, and accountability cause anxiety and mental unwellness and that people should be told what to do, because they will be happier as children or pets.
And if you think that sounded better in the original Norse, I agree.

We have raised a new generation of takers living in their mom's basements who only care that they have internet access, an XBox and where their next choom stick is coming from.
Older Americans simply want their Social Security check and Medicare, and really don't give a flying fuck who is in office as long as the checks keep coming in.
50% of those in the middle don't even pay taxes!
So.. "the left"? ha. most of America, you should say.

If you've ever been on a cattle drive, you know that the hardest part is getting the herd started in the desired direction. Once the bulk of the herd is moving, it is much easier to get all the cattle to follow along.
So, in the words of our betters:

Add in that bad choices you make get a gubmint intervention to save you from yourself -- you bought an overpriced house, you built in a flood zone, you didn't take care of your health so now they have to sell you insurance anyhow, you didn't think it was important to acquire any useful skills so now the gubmint will provide you with unending food and shelter, also on and on.
These are the kind of things you do for your children. The difference is, you expect your children to learn how to protect and provide for themselves and learn from their mistakes or the help eventually ends.

Fuck. Try the black olives this time, if you don't like them, don't get them again. Over time with trial and error, you too can assemble the sandwhich that most appeals to you. She seems to forget there will be more meals. Also, its fucking subway. Even if I thought like this I probably wouldn't admit it for fear of looking like a complete fucking idiot. Jesus. She's like one of the people I get behind in line at a gas station who thinks THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSE DEPENDS ON MY CHOICE OF LOTTO TICKET and takes 15 minutes agonizing over scratchoffs. Protip: if they put the game out there and the lotto is still going, chances are astronomically high you'll lose. At least there is something at stake there. With a sandwhich, no one cares, even a marginally bad choice is still probably good, it'll be a turd like the mass she has between her ears in a few hours.

That isn't technically true since Marx didn't believe free will exists in the first place (it's a specifically Christian concept implicitly recognizing the existence of God); hence, capacity for a nonexistent anything would be superfluous. Marx was a materialist, not a determinist. Your statement about Marx's view of individual choices is also conceptually incorrect since he believed that, yes, human beings can change circumstances and situations. Since we (humanity) have influence over events, we are not (exactly) slaves to blind forces of history although we were/are subject to the thesis/antithesis/synthesis of his dialectic.
What can I say? I was very, very left-wing when I was young.

The argument is about freedom to choose, and she always chooses the same thing and that's bad because...
...so she chooses to go to places where there is no choice because then she doesn't have to choose and that's good because....
...if it's good she made the right choice, and if it's bad she had no choice so it's not her fault, but that's good because she's a martyr to the cause because it's all about accepting the burden of responsibility for all those other people who don't have the common sense to make the right choice.

Had an eye-twitch moment when reading an article about mothers who couldn't get an abortion.
In the comments, a man raised by a single mother argued that his mother would have been better off aborting him - then she wouldn't have struggled with the bills, and could "have him later" when her life was more stable.
I really wanted to point out the fatal flaw in his thinking ...

A shitload of truth there. Junk yards used to actually dismantle cars and and tag and shelve the useful stuff, ( radiators, starters, alternators, doors, fenders, etc). Then it morphed into, "yeah I got one somewhere in the back, take it off yourself", and half the times it was the wrong car. Then it became well if it can't be fixed and sold we'll just crush the whole thing..
Working on new cars isn't too bad mechanically, but electrically they are nightmare. (Thank you EPA for cars having more sensors than the fucking star ship enterprise )
Forget the FSA, 99% of them couldn't start a frigging lawnmower anyway, never mind knowing which end of the tool to hold.

Salecl (what kind of an asshole name is that?) is merely indulging in the progressive dance around the evil of capitalism. She just isn't very good at it and makes a bit of a fool of herself by not understanding what capitalism is.

But isn't this simply a problem of mass capitalism and democracy? In other words, our system was not designed for everyone to vote, but rather, that stakeholders from everywhere who had skin in the game (so not just the political class) would make the choices. In the same way most guys let their wife choose the drapes, people who had some means of understanding their choices and were equipped to make them, made them. The same goes for buying stuff. If you're not equipped to figure out what condiments to get at Subway, have your boyfriend decide for you. The whole idea is to just pick what you like, not to try to maximize your benefit...!
It's like because Marxists couldn't show that the proles were so bad under capitalism that they would automatically form socialism, they had to (in our case) twist capitalism into such a perverted knot so that the people would finally reject it?
The irony is, they will reject it for real capitalism.

2. Confuse The People until they believe in nothing, stand for nothing, and know nothing.
