The World Gone Mad: Pacific Edition
— DrewM

Headline 1:

"N. Korea says it has scrapped armistice that ended Korean War"

Headline 2:

""Climate Change Tops List of Security Threats in the Pacific Says ADM Locklear".

North Korea is threatening war on the Korean peninsular (and to nuke the US) and the top US military commander in the region says "climate change" is our biggest security threat.

Yeah.

I  posted  this  in  last  thread,  but  it  seems  more  appropriate  here.

OT - NRO has two corner pieces this morning that make me think maybe we aren't cutting DOD budget as much as we should.

1. Head of US Pac Command thinks Climate Change is No. 1 US Threat.
2. Air Force Chaplain awarded Bronze Star for PowerPoint teaching proper sensitivity of Koran.

I realize that policy flows from the top down, but if those are areas that the DOD is focusing on, then maybe we should cut more of their budget.

Al could still be right.

What are the chances that Al Jazeera will be a doormat for a narcissistic US President ?

The real story here is that Al Jazeera just may turn out to be even better at journalism than (MS)NBC, ABC, CBS, or CNN.

It will be sort of like watching RT (Russia Today). You know in advance that there is a "bent" to the coverage (like #Occupy, etc), but sometimes they really do speak "Truth to Power"

Well, they do have China stepping all over their junk recently, too.

Unfortunately, I only see escalation in several global hotspots, and we don't have anyone in power to slam their fist on the table and stop some of these children for clamoring for attention.  It'll lead to war.

What those who have never served, especialy in the Navy, cannot understand... is just how much control they really have over you...

While onboard ship... they control where you can go, what you eat, who you MUST associate with... who you must sleep with.

EVERY action and word is done with others around... there is NO privacy... there is no place to go... so for 6-9 months, your words and actions are controled.

Thus, when they went PC in the mid 80's, you had the perfect environment for control... if you did not kowtow to PC'ness... you were never promoted, and soon out....

That was a Generation ago.... the Admirals of Today, made it thorugh that crucible of PC control.....

So now.... Climate chage (which we aint affecting), and being 'Good', is more important than war fighting....

That I find hard to believe.  Yes there are those in SoKo who are   all gung-ho for Communism, but     capitalism has skyrocketed SoKo's economy like crazy in the   last twenty years.   They teach their kids the Torah because they figure there's a connection between    learning Judaism     and being successful (given the Jewish tendency towards economic success despite oppressive conditions throughout history).     They have mandatory military enlistment for all their young men for at least two years, plus or minus a couple of years depending on what branch of the military you go to.

Regardless of what you think of South Korea in general, they aren't us.  Thank God.   Maybe they've still got some sense.

89 Now we have MS Access and a whole generation of useless idiots who think they can write code. Until you ask them to drop to the OS and write a .BAT file. If they don't have a GUI, they simply can't handle a text editor with a blank document...sigh. --- This is where a youth of playing computer games in a DOS environment comes in handy... My dad taught me a bunch of command-line stuff at a young age so I could be self-sufficient and I learned a lot more about it when I got older trying to fuck around with Config.sys to play those goddamn memory hog games like Wing Commander II.

And that's really my point. I don't blame him- he can only learn what he's been taught. My problem is that Universities, by their nature, will tend to lag at least a year or two behind current technology. To learn about technology that's being used RIGHT NOW, you need a mentor currently in the industry.

In old .NET we had "typed containers" which had certain limitations. Generics get rid of most of those. They're versatile and easy to use. Lambdas (offically Lambda Expressions) are a form of short-hand logic for quick calculations or filtering of data. Extension Methods are ways to give something (I'm staying VERY general here) functionality it did not have before without actually modifying the thing itself. Without proper background, it's very difficult to explain. OTOH, if you're writing current code (especially for the kinds of clients we take on), you'll be using them all the time. All. The. Time. 137 For you .NETers- the "FizzBuzz" problem is perhaps one of the best documented code snippets out there. The scenario goes like this (yes: you're teaching your computer a drinking game- it should be moron approved). Write a method which will count from 1 - 100, displaying each number on the screen. EXCEPT: any number which is evenly divisible by 3 should instead print "FIZZ," any number which is evenly divisible by 5 should print "BUZZ", and any number which is evenly divisible by both 3 & 5 should print "FizzBuzz." Now, the developers at the HQ are already working through how they'd do that. It might take them 5 minutes or so to do the whole thing (I think it took me 7 the first time it was posed to me). The point of the exercise it to make sure the guy in front of you can actually write some other-than-purely-straight-forward code. I think it took this guy about 15 minutes (I wasn't timing exactly). And he got it wrong (as in: his code wouldn't have run properly). This is such a famous exercise I considered not using it, because I was afraid he would have a canned response all ready to go.

Kim Jong Un is new to command. He needs to prove himself to his generals. IÂ’m sure he loves living as much as he loves basketball but he wonÂ’t be alive for long if he doesnÂ’t have the support of his military. Thus, he goes all in with bellicose provocations. The idea, I guess, is to bring tensions high enough to force some kind of concessions from South KoreaÂ’s new president, who happens to be a woman.

The US and S. Korea could temporarily suspend joint military exercises. ThatÂ’s the quick and easy way out. It would give the Norks the concession theyÂ’re after, one they can trumpet as a great victory, which would then cement military loyalty to Kim Jong Un.

If, however, Kim Jong Un canÂ’t spin a victory out of this mess by squeezing some kind of concession from the US or S. Korea, heÂ’ll have to escalate hostilities until he does force concessions. He absolutely cannot afford to lose face, especially not to a woman.

That sounds too logical for someone interested in hanging out with an addle-brained, former-sports character a.k.a. "The Worm."

Kim Jong Un's father and grandfather managed to hold onto absolute power in a totalitarian police state for several decades. Crazy But Not Stupid runs in the family.

Yes, plus some server, web dev, and database stuff too. Have my fingers in a number of pies here... Wouldn't claim to be a seasoned expert on any of this, but I can learn and ramp up my knowledge as needed to get stuff done.

166 I was originally hired because I could write optimized 65816 assembly. My lawn, off it. (I do know .NET 4 and generics and lambdas and stuff now, although I work mostly in C++0x). There's a small group of very smart people teaching their kids computers on either real physical examples or emulators of the popular machines of the 80s/early 90s. Those kids will go on to be very, very hire-able when they're of age.

167 Instead he said the No. 1 issue for our Navy is climate change which means that there is a serious case of mission creep going on at the Navy. Consdier the other story that I referenced about a chaplain bing awarded the bronze star for a Koran sensitivity power point presentation, I think the DOD is fully extended and in need of some good old fasion budget cutting until it refocuses on its real mission in the world.

Reducing the burden on the budget of all of the PC douches would be a good place to start cutting

168 Admiral Samuel J. Locklear II: “We have interjected into our multilateral dialogue – even with China and India – the imperative to kind of get military capabilities aligned [for] when the effects of climate change start to impact these massive populations,” he said. “If it goes bad, you could have hundreds of thousands or millions of people displaced and then security will start to crumble pretty quickly.’’ China: 'Who is this dumb f*ck? Millions of people? We gotta billion people to worry about.' India: 'What he said.'

Shoot me an email, and I'll send you some exercises to do. If you look like you have a decent grounding, I can get your resume and get it to my bosses. If you don't want to come all the way to TX, we also have offices in Washington State, Missouri, and Colorado (I'm not sure about that last one), I know the other two). 170 All of these third world retards do not realize that by nuking blue state urban areas, they are killing all the Madisonians off.

No one will be left but Jacksonians to make decisions about how to proceed.

When that happens, a half hour later the language that country speaks will only be spoken by dead language students.

179 Write a method which will count from 1 - 100, displaying each number on the screen. EXCEPT: any number which is evenly divisible by 3 should instead print "FIZZ," any number which is evenly divisible by 5 should print "BUZZ", and any number which is evenly divisible by both 3 & 5 should print "FizzBuzz." Pseudo-code okay, MSF? It's honestly a pretty straightforward logic problem if you are into service procedures or flowcharting. For a n00b graduate the womyn's studies classes might have muddled the mind a bit. INT N=1 DoWhile N < 101 IF N/3 Print to Screen "Fizz" Else If N/5 Print to Screen "Buzz" Else If N/3 AND N/5 Print to Screen "FizzBuzz" Else Print to Screen ValueN N++ First computer was a Commie16 ("Load comma 8, bizzatches!") And I spent waaaaay too much time screwing with config.sys trying to get flight sims workin'. AS, CIT, BS, BIS - magna cum laude. Been working in IT for 17 years and haven't gotten a raise in 6 (pay freeze, dontcha know.) I'm interviewing for a promotion next quarter and if I don't get I think I'm going to have to move on. Between the lack of raises and insurance increases I'm making less now then I was when Dear Leader was elected.

188

Our Naval history of the early months of WWII was rife with the tribulations of having to relieve peacetime-minded commanders of their duties, in favor of "fire eaters" who could get the job done.

History seems to demand such repetitions, soon after it's lessons have been lost.

189 The Norks are rattling sabers because they want more free stuff. BHO needs to team Rodman up with the peanut farmer for a diplomatic rescue mission, and it would be a good idea ship over a few boat loads of free soybeans and coal. Appeasement FORWARD. Oh, along with the free stuff they could include a complimentary pinup calendar of some of those hot babes in the House like Maxine and Nancy.
