The World's Easiest Column
— Ace

I find this sort of column trivial and silly. But conservatives pump it out, with minor variations, ever three months.

I have no real problem with it... I don't disagree with it, so much as I think it's just silly. It pleases readers while being perfectly trivial in its ambitions.

And this is Charles Krauthammer, who is a pretty smart guy. But I really do think this whole "Let's kick up a fuss about what euphemisms we use for terrorism" thing is kind of stale.

We conservatives, as a group, minted quite a few of these sorts of columns from 2001 to 2006 and I think all that can be said has been said.

I suppose my main problem is that I don't see the problem with using diplomatic language to discuss tricky things. I don't mean the absurd "workplace violence" claim about Nisan; that is an outrage.

But I don't see how the ball is advanced much by declaring, forthrightly, that America is engaged in War on Radical Islam. Which isn't true per se; we're engaged in a war on terrorist cells within radical Islam. Given that one third (or more) of the Islamic world adheres to what you'd call Radical Islam, I don't see it as a "war" on all of Radical Islam, unless people really want to bomb Lahore.

Which, by the way, yeah I know. It's a thought, I grant you.

So what we're engaged in is a war on terrorism supported by Radical Islam and a political/diplomatic effort to calm the not-terrorist (yet) elements of Radical Islam down.

Anyway, just an opinion. You may disagree. I just find this sort of a Kabuki argument we make when we don't have anything bad to say but want to say something.

3 If you don't call it as it is you can't solve the problem. Fact: most Muslims in the world would think you should die if you leave Islam. That is insane but Democrats don't want that fact known so we all cant talk about it Because Democrats control the media and conservatives don't like to fight as exemplified on this blog. People here just whine they don't organize. So these radicals come here to America and you get explosive violence but we never talk about the low level Islamic violence, the attacks on people by Muslims who don't like what you say.

12 Seeing as how no  Muslims have anything negative to say about terrorist killings of millions of people around the world then it seems that we can use any euphemism we want to describe our war on them.  I think War on Terror fits the situation and radical Islam describes the majority of Muslims who would gladly chop off your head for not becoming a Muslim when they demand it.

42 Well I gotta disagree. As we all know the left has been co-opting language for a very long time. It's central to their mission as Orwell so presciently noted decades ago, control the language, control the debate. Lot's of little things seem innocuous enough but they add up to to a lot. And when it comes to something as black and white as war, it makes it easier to dismiss things you don't like. Walking a way from a war is hard. In a way you are either winning or losing, you either win or you lose. But an overseas contingency operation or a man made disaster, just walk away. Which is pretty much what we did in Iraq and what we are about to do in Afghanistan. Hell, we walked away from the whole damn war on terror. And lets not forget that Obama used the word terror to his advantage during the campaign. He did claim in the Rose Garden the day after the Benghazi attack that an terror attack did happen because of a youtube video. But he wouldn't say terrorist because he has been claiming for years that he had personally killed all the terrorists. Words do matter.

81 "and a political/diplomatic effort to calm the not-terrorist (yet) elements of Radical Islam down."

History has shown they calm down pretty fast when confronted with absolutely unapologetic levels of force. A philosophy not applied by either of the most recent two American presidential administrations.

Trying to do "nation-building" in the Ummah is insane. They don't respect that. They view it as a weak-horse attempt to cravenly subvert their religious loyalties.

What they do respect is the strong horse. Who comes and kicks the shit out of them, destroys everything in sight including mosques, and says, "Expect more of this if there's any more trouble," and then FUCKING LEAVES. No humanitarian nonsense. No aid. No food. No money. Nothing. Kill people, break things, and LEAVE the wreckage behind after issuing suitably frightening warnings.

Every single successful Western-world engagement with Islam has worked this way.

Whereas all of the unsuccessful engagements have relied on humanitarian nonsense. Which is demanded by Islam but not respected if and once delivered. They themselves would never behave that way if they had been the ones with the upper hand. Why then would they respect anyone who does?

89 It's not about language, it's about incoherent - or sinister - policy. This would all be comical and merely peculiar if it didn’t reflect a larger, more troubling reality: The confusion of language is a direct result of a confusion of policy — which is served by constant obfuscation. Bush committed to a policy of continuing Islamic immigration and pro-Islamic propaganda, bloody wars on Muslims in their own countries, and a huge security state with decreased rights for all Americans. (And as it turned out, increased spying on allies too.) This is the worst of all worlds. It's expensive, it's bloody, it kills freedom, it stirs up Muslims in hate and imports them in hordes, and it only adds up if you actually want to build a police state and create threats like the Chechen brothers, who then terrorize their new "countrymen" justifying even more police state control. As a foreign policy for the benefit of Americans, it makes no sense. All the lying words are just about confusing people so that these horrible policies can be inflicted on them. Obama has continued what Bush began, without enthusiasm, but with lots of drones, which don't need morale. That is the problem. It's not about precise language for its own sweet sake.

But the use of Latin is as discriminatory as the use of cursive, no?
I have no idea what the consequence of penning Latin in cursive would be, but I suspect it would be an extended attendance at sensitivity seminars.

105 It's not, provided it doesn't go unanswered.

They could never invade... and any internal problems, while horrific, could be handled by Law Enforcement, and could never rise to the level of bringing down the Society...  even if our Government did nothing... the problem would be solved by the People...

But... Governments NEVER allow an opportunity for more power to go...

War on Drugs?  No knock raids and Property seizure...

War on Poverty?  put millions of Americans on the doll... where they would then vote for specific Parties...

War on Terror?  Spying on EVERY single American...

106 put millions of Americans on the doll

Sounds kinky.

I just find this sort of a Kabuki argument we make...

49% of all blog arguments, left or right, are Kabuki.  Not illegitmate, per se. But repeats that avoid getting to the heart of the difference.

111 98 Posted by: Chromoly Man I thought you shook the dust of this blog from your sandals. Posted by: toby928© presents at August 09, 2013 06:53 PM (QupBk) - Ace went on bizarre, insulting rants about things that were in his mind, not mine, and told me to shut up and never post here again. Fine, OK. At that point I too though I had shaken the dust of this blog from my sandals. Then he said he wasn't banning anybody and was just being educational. All open and tolerant. Strange. I would have left it there and drifted off, lurking less and less, but then Ace went on another rant where he said, if you try to shut people up with emotion and no argument, you are a monster. That was what he himself did, so I posted a comment calling attention to the fact that he failed his own test. No reaction. Strange. He's also had unhinged rants against other people that drove them off the blog. So he apparently just does this from time to time, on different topics. I think Ace goes on crazy tears from time to time, for reasons internal to him. For the time being he seems to have calmed down. Tomorrow who knows? I'd speak more respectfully of him if he'd spoken at all respectfully to me. He didn't, so I'm not bothering. For sure he doesn't have rational arguments against what I say. (As opposed to the racial bees in his own bonnet.) What he wants to do now is up to him. He may scream at me. He may scream at someone else. He may get in a banning mood, just because. Whatever. As usual, I post on race when I think that's most relevant, and on other things when I think they are most relevant. I assume I won't be posting on here forever, and probably not for long at all. But I'm not particularly looking for a fight. Just looking on, and remarking on things occasionally.

113 Not sure how someone who can read can't read cursive. It's 90% the SAME, with a line connecting the letters.

119 As bad as amnesty is, the bill is even worse since it opens up the floodgates for H1B visas. Say hello to 300,000 new Indians coming here every year willing to work for $25K a year at jobs that now pay $75K.

121 89 It's not about language, it's about incoherent - or sinister - policy. - Toning down the paranoia to a dull roar, I think George W. Bush's post 9/11 policy mix, adopted on the fly, and continued by Obama apparently with little interest on his part, was incoherent, not sinister in its conception. That doesn't make it less sinister in its effects.

122 I tend toward disagreeing on two points:

1. Like most conservatives, you're prone to giving up the ground of contest once you believe a point was made. This gives the destructionists the ground for free.

You seem to be unable to comprehend that the domestic enemy is tenaciously willing to stick to the fight to redefine everything to their own whims and desires, even in the smallest of details.

This is why the destructionists win consistently over time. It's all about endurance.

2. Islam is at war with us. Not radical islam. Sure, there are many islamics that aren't actively engaged in the war, and even a few that take up arms on our side of the fight. But, islam is an ideology of conquest wrapped up in the guise of a religion and islam demands that the world be conquered in the name of islam.

To pretend otherwise is simply cowardice.
