Another Thought On That Idiot David Frum
— andy

Ben and you Morons and Moronettes had good fun with this earlier:

But I want to make a bit of a serious point about it.

With about a 10:1 ratio of guns to people in my house when I was growing up, I learned proper gun safety early on. There are a couple of versions of the standard rules ... the NRA has 3 and Jeff Cooper had 4:

1. All guns are always loaded.

2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.

4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

My dad was always fond of pointing out that a "safety", like you'll find on most guns other than revolvers, is a mechanical device that can fail and is no substitute for these rules, which work in all cases.

Also, these rules are designed to provide layers of safety through redundancy. A gun you didn't think was loaded is less likely to unintentionally discharge and hurt anything other than your pride if it's pointed in a safe direction and less likely still if you keep your finger off the trigger.

And then today, along comes super-genius David Frum, who knows less about guns than the other things he knows nothing about but nevertheless sees fit to lecture on, and advocates for something that is less safe than current best practice engaged in by people who know what they're doing.

Note to Frum: My H&K USP carry gun has a loaded chamber indicator. It's meaningless to me because I always treat the thing like it's loaded anyway.

Frum's charge in the piece he did for CNN that I won't link is, basically, that gun manufacturers are being negligent and this results in needless accidental deaths. So, just at random I went and grabbed a box from a fairly recent gun purchase (a Glock 23 in 2007):

Untitled Untitled Untitled

Untitled Untitled Untitled

The outside of the box, inside of the box and manual are littered with warnings about the risk of death or injury from unsafe handling practices. Also, the gun store where I bought it has safety instructions printed on the receipt and you're required to sign a statement that you've read and understand them in order to take possession of the firearm.

Once someone has waded through all this, is one more form of warning really going to do any good?

The part of Frum's CNN piece spawning this ignorant tweet that deals with gun manufacturers can best be described by analogy: He's asking for a pen that doesn't misspell words.

Of course, this is classic Frum trolling of the right and I wouldn't pay much attention to it but for the fact that there are people who may actually mistake him for a serious commentator on the issue. As Jeff Jacoby points out, there is real danger in letting emotion and ignorance override fact and reason when it comes to gun laws.

In 1998, Massachusetts passed what was hailed as the toughest gun-control legislation in the country. Among other stringencies, it banned semiautomatic "assault" weapons, imposed strict new licensing rules, prohibited anyone convicted of a violent crime or drug trafficking from ever carrying or owning a gun, and enacted severe penalties for storing guns unlocked.

"Today, Massachusetts leads the way in cracking down on gun violence," said Republican Governor Paul Cellucci as he signed the bill into law. "It will save lives and help fight crime in our communities." Scott Harshbarger, the state's Democratic attorney general, agreed: "This vote is a victory for common sense and for the protection of our children and our neighborhoods." One of the state's leading anti-gun activists, John Rosenthal of Stop Handgun Violence, joined the applause. "The new gun law," he predicted, "will certainly prevent future gun violence and countless grief."

It didn't.

The 1998 legislation did cut down, quite sharply, on the legal use of guns in Massachusetts. Within four years, the number of active gun licenses in the state had plummeted. "There were nearly 1.5 million active gun licenses in Massachusetts in 1998," the AP reported. "In June [2002], that number was down to just 200,000." The author of the law, state Senator Cheryl Jacques, was pleased that the Bay State's stiff new restrictions had made it possible to "weed out the clutter."

But the law that was so tough on law-abiding gun owners had quite a different impact on criminals.

Since 1998, gun crime in Massachusetts has gotten worse, not better. Instead of "lead[ing] the way in cracking down on gun violence," the state has seen gun violence shoot up. In 2011, Massachusetts recorded 122 murders committed with firearms, the Boston Globe reported this month – "a striking increase from the 65 in 1998." Other crimes rose too. Between 1998 and 2011, robbery with firearms climbed 20.7 percent. Aggravated assaults jumped 26.7 percent.

Read the whole thing.

I can personally attest to how hard Massachusetts makes lawful purchase and possession of firearms. As a matter of fact, they do virtually all of the things Frum suggested in his column, from requiring locked storage at home to promulgation of "approved firearms rosters" defining what guns can and can't be sold here under the guise of consumer safety.

These laws were made by people who know as little about guns as Frum and ignored all the advice of people who know vastly more. That this has failed to produce the intended results should come as no surprise.

Now people with this same mentality are charging forth to "prevent the next Sandy Hook". How do you think that's going to turn out?

I think the latest bullshit rationalization for this is that unless all of the states surrounding MA have the exact same gun laws, guns will flow in from those other states to MA, enabling criminals to use them to commit crimes.

Just like every other asinine Leftist scheme from time immemorial, gun control just hasn't been tried on a big enough scale.

He doesn't want to admit that there are a bunch of illegal pens out there--owned by criminals that want to kill the other gangs of pen owners. And we wants to blame the butchering of the English language on legal pen owners and pen manufacturers.

He offered to meet with Barry over lunch and have a civil discussion, and Barry (this guy's words) "wrinkled his face and turned away from me."

Good. I obviously didn't read the whole thing but I heard Juan Williams try that same angle (it's the guns from Virginia that are used in DC gun crimes and if you support Virginia gun rights then you don't care about DC crime victims...), and it was audacious enough to derail MKH's otherwise solid argument.

Just because they get slapped for saying it, it won't stop them from saying it... not until it sinks into the Low Information Voters' heads.

36 just staying within the confines of FrumWorld and taking the question as having merit. Why wouldn't you have a "Bullet Loaded"indicator on the gun? Because you might want the person attacking you to stop when you point the gun at them. That's more likely to happen should the gun not indicate "Hey! I'm Just a Highly Efficient Walnut Cracker" if there is not a round in the chamber. _

44 How will the left's idiot laws turn out? Exactly the way they want them to turn out; the law abiding will be left defenseless and the criminals will some how neglect to turn in their weapons. The sooner we realize that the left is populated by malignant psychos the sooner we will realize that bad results are what they're after.

Of course Socialism and Communism don't work; they were never meant to work. They're meant to enslave people and exact revenge on those who make leftists look bad by being successful. If you think you're trying to coil a rope, and what you are really doing is wrestling with a poisonous snake you are in deep trouble. That is the essence of the problem that conservatives face.

84 I am amazed at the stupid and the MSM indoctrination.

I own about a hundred guns, maybe 30 pistols, 40 shotguns and 30 rifles.  At least 15 that would be classified as "assault weapons".

My wife asked me this weekend what was so bad about banning assault weapons.  I asked her what she thought an assault weapon was.  She said one of those guns that keeps shooting and you can kill a lot of people like the guy in CT.

Why she was asking this, my son had our PS 90 on the kitchen table.  She had no clue that it was an evil "assault weapon".  It had a 50 round Mag in it.

We are losing the fucking narrative to these stupid fucks in the Blue Metro areas that know nothing about weapons expect what they see on some Bruce Willis shot up.

93 Idk if it's the Ivy League, or merely the Northeast, but at some point you have to stop trying to convince people the enemy is real, and switch over to defeating the enemy. Get real. Get real, or be declared hors de combat and thus susceptible to collateral damage. "Circular error probability zero. Impact with high order detonation. Thank you and have a nice day." Awww, shucks, that strike killed several of the enemy, and several more northeasterners who were trying to convince their neighbors that the threat was real. Pity. 111 Relying on the CLI will eventually bite you in the ass. You Need To: A) Treat all guns as if they were loaded, and B) Fucking check the chamber. What does the CLI tell you? It tells you if there's a round in the chamber, or a spent shell that didn't eject, or a snap cap, or something else, or a small object is lodged in the CLI, or the CLI is broken. Checking the chamber confirms the presence of a live round, or its absence. The CLI doesn't do that. It's regulatory fluff.

182 He also is ignorant about what "denominator" means. There are 30,000 car deaths a year and we have 225,000,000 cars. There are (at a minimum) 200,000,000 guns in the U.S. and about 8,000 gun deaths every year. So that makes cars about three times as dangerous as guns (based on the denominator).

I saw ben Shapiro take on Piers.  while I think Shapiro won the debate, I think it makes it easy for piers to ridicule us as conspiracy theoriests and paranoid when we talks about guns in terms of tyrannical government.

also when pierws and others make the point we don't need certain gun types he is essentially right but conservatives tend to get defensive and say we do need every gun type.

in my view, it's silly to talk about what we need....we don't need SUVs for example but some people prefer them.  talk in terms of what your rights are and say it's none of your business what I need and maybe I just want it.  that's what S.E. Cupp says about my body every night.

207 I ran into the same nonsense with some Fed auditors.  We have a device that can contain pressure that, now and again, we have to open and take devices out.  The auditors wanted a pressure gage at each of the devices to make sure someone wouldn't open with pressure inside.  I told them we weren't putting on gages until we were ready to open and even then our procedure said to open the vent valve and insert a plastic rod to clear blockage if no pressure vented.  Having a gage that reads zero when there is pressure inside is the surest way to get someone killed.  "Bullet in chamber" is the same stuff.

249 Girls I now own a XP .45 that holds 14 rounds, Firing +p+ ammo and the recoil is very comfortable. My old, old, old, 1911 firing custom ammo loaded at half that strength used to wretch my wrist.

Girls, 1911 was a long time ago, time to move on.

250 I've never owned a gun and I dont know anythingabout them. So I'm as qualfied as David Frum. (Andmy penis is bigger than his.) Posted by: Jim in Virginia at February 18, 2013 08:36 PM (q+XGX) Dude, MY penis is bigger than his.

251 If the grip-safety is squeezed, and the trigger is pulled, it will drop the hammer.

And if the hammer is under control of the thumb, when the trigger is pulled, and the thumb lets the hammer slip, there will be a loud noise if said gun is loaded.

Posted by: Toby TL at February 18, 2013 06:23 PM (dbt/7)

252 Toby,
Then the hammer was NOT under control of the thumb.
There is no valid reason to drop the hammer on a loaded chamber in a 1911.
Yes, it is, indeed time for you to move on.
Pull your big-girl panties up, Sally.
You can't handle a 1911.
Better get a girly-gun that won't scare you...

253 Dear Mr. Frum, In order to determine whether or not the weapon you are holding is loaded, follow these steps: 1. Insert muzzle in your ear. 2. Pull trigger. 3. If you hear a soft click, the weapon is not, repeat not loaded.

254 There is no valid reason to drop the hammer on a loaded chamber in a 1911.

Old timer, how the fk do you ever then let the hammer down on a loaded chamber on a 1911 if you want to load new rounds then place said gun in half cock?

Old timer, I was tired. Now they have de cockers, and other modern weapons, such as the XP or the KAHR have done away with that problem.

255 Why doesnt every gun automatically indicate whether there's a bullet in the chamber?

Teh stupid, it burns!!

256 Other questions Frum most likely has about life:

"Why don't food makers just remove calories from food? That way no one would ever get fat."

"Why don't girls like me?"

"Why does it burn so bad when I pee?"

258 Interesting. "Toby TL" seems to have fallen victim to the TB3K.
Imagine that...

259 In the post, Jeff Jacoby says there were 65 murders with firearms in Massachusetts in 1998 and 122 murders in 2011.  He compares that to the sharp decline in gun licenses during that period.  Also note that the population of Massachusetts had not changed much:  The total state population was 6,349,097 in the 2000 Census (http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?src=bkmk) and the 2011 estimated population was 6,607,033 (http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/25000.html).

260 Ignorance of the masses helps gun owners in some cases.  For example, good ole lever actions in .30-.30 have a bit better ballistics than the dreaded assault weapon in 7.62x39.  If you happen to live in one of the dreaded deep blue states with an AWB, you are still not helpless with a good lever action.  Most so called assault weapons have puny ballistics by design (leaving out the magnificent .308 of course).  Even a good ole Lee-Enfield is a fine battle rifle that can be operated surprisingly quickly for a bolt action.  Bonus is the std. magazine holds ten rounds of .30 caliber goodness.

261 Major Strasser: Are you one of those people who cannot imagine the Germans in their beloved Paris?
Rick: It's not particularly my beloved Paris.
Heinz: Can you imagine us in London?
Rick: When you get there, ask me!
Captain Renault: Hmmh! Diplomatist!
Major Strasser: How about New York?
Rick: Well there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade.

262 Excellent answer Andy! Safety overdone is anything but. Airbag warnings on visors, "may cause death" on everything under the sun (and printed in 1/2 dozen languages)... it's actually obscuring reality. And safety overkill is just one facet of this mindlessness; think FDIC.

"In 1988, the surgeon general, C. Everett Koop, proclaimed ice cream to a be public-health menace right up there with cigarettes. Alluding to his officeÂ’s famous 1964 report on the perils of smoking, Dr. Koop announced that the American diet
was a problem of “comparable” magnitude, chiefly because of the high-fat foods that were causing coronary heart disease and other deadly ailments.

He introduced his report with these words: 'The depth of the science base underlying its findings is even more impressive than that for tobacco and health in 1964.'"

... and today ice cream, just like snowy winters, are a thing of the past. LOL

It was 12 years earlier that John Carpenter's "Assault on Precinct 13" had made the ice cream truck into a "death-mobile", but this had nothing to do with fat content.

264 Frum exhibits a classic case of someone who has never shot a gun or learned how they actually work trying to write regulations to control them.  It's like a non-driver trying to regulate how to reduce car accidents.

Frum, a classic big-city intellectual, is ignorance on parade. And the best way to fix this is for someone who knows him personally to take the poor noodge to a shooting range and let him actually learn something before he opens his misinformed yawp again.

265 What would you expect from Cass R. Sunstein, former Obama head of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) ...

For coercive paternalism to be justified, Conly contends that four criteria must be met. First, the activity that paternalists seek to prevent must genuinely be opposed to peopleÂ’s long-term ends as judged by people themselves. If people really love collecting comic books, stamps, or license plates, there is no occasion to intervene.

Second, coercive measures must be effective rather than futile. Prohibition didnÂ’t work, and officials shouldnÂ’t adopt strategies that fail. Third, the benefits must exceed the costs. To know whether they do, would-be paternalists must assess both material and psychological benefits and costs (including not only the frustration experienced by those who lose the power to choose but also the losses experienced by those who are coerced into something bad for them). Fourth, the measure in question must be more effective than the reasonable alternatives. If an educational campaign would have the benefits of a prohibition without the costs, then Conly favors the educational campaign.

Frum isn't ignorant. He's dishonest.

267 OK, I'm late to the party and probably nobody will read this but this often quoted Jeff Cooper "gun safety rule" just irritates the shit out of me:

"1. All guns are always loaded."

No they are not.  I clean my guns after I shoot them and they are always unloaded when I clean them.  It would be insane to clean a loaded gun.  The other thing is that you are stating something that you know to be false.  The fact that Jeff Cooper said it does not make it true.

The three gun safety rules that I have taught to everyone I have taught to shoot are in order of importance:

1. Don't allow the muzzle of the gun to point at any thing or any one that you are not willing to shoot.

2. Assume that a gun is loaded until you have checked it yourself.  If it has been out of your sight, check it again.  Do this every time without exception.  If you don't know how to check if it is loaded, ask somebody who does know how to check it.

3. Keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.

Even if you get 2 and 3 wrong, as long as you remember rule #1, the results will not be as bad.  Besides, it is impolite to point a gun at somebody whether it is loaded or not.
