Got scandal fatigue? Maybe this will brighten your day some...

Because emerging A/C markets are going to suck up almost ALL of the electric power generated by "renewables".


"The main significance of this study is that the estimated future electricity footprint of air conditioners is on par with or surpasses the electricity to be generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar," said Berkeley Lab scientist Nihar Shah, the lead author of the report. "This implies that policies to promote more efficient air conditioning equipment should be pursued with a similar seriousness and concern."
So what's the big deal? New R-22 based units have been banned, replaced by R-410a units. The Ozone hole was saved, life was good, right? No. Not good enough. You see R-410a was good for ozone, but its still a "global warming gas". Bad, bad, bad.

Usually, when there some "policy" changes in the works like this, it means your "new" A/C unit is only gonna blow slightly less warm air, or you need to flush 3 times, or you need to wash dishes before putting them in your water saver dishwasher with no-phosphate soaps.

Maybe not this time though. It looks like the A/C industry is trying to get ahead of the global warming curve looking for R-410a "drop in" replacements that don't upset the AGW crowd and work better than R-410a.

The vast majority of new residential A/C install for the past few years have been R-410a units, so this is good news for anyone in the market for a new A/C at some point in the future.

34 I do remember my husband's late great aunt's house on the beach in New Smyrna, FL.  No a/c, just fans.

We kept all the windows open and spent the day on the beach or the screened porch.  Went to bed at night with just fans in the bedrooms and the breeze off the ocean.

Best times ever.  Then she died and left the house to her adopted son and his family.  He died, and his asshat widow and kids fucked up the house and made it into a rental, complete with central air and doing away with the bathtub with the window looking out over the sand dunes.

Haven't been back.

I remember going to sleep as a kid in the bunk bead with the windows open and the attic fan pulling the plastic shades in the breeze. Good sleep then.

One starts to years for a world outside of all of this, where people are allowed to make stuff that works. And if it uses a lot of water or electricity, screw it, collect/make more. A place like that would feel like an oasis at this point.

39 Isn't the ozone hole pretty much the same as it ever was? The UN had some committee that every year had to issue a press release saying "Ozone hole as big or bigger than ever, but we promise that next year it will start shrinking since CFCs were banned over two decades ago". They finally stopped with the annual press releases about 8 years or so ago and just stated they the expect the hole to start shrinking by 2020.

42 My cousins husband is an hvac guy, he went off a rant a while back about refrigerant that i remember being funny as hell, wish i could remember it but we were both drunk so i don't. One thing i do remember him saying is that when people figure out that 95% of the time when their a/c goes out it's either a $1 fuse or a $15 capacitor, both of which are easily replaceable by home owners, he's going to be out of business.

Our electric company just sent us a letter asking us to voluntarily participate in a program where they would install a device in our a/c system that would allow them to adjust the temperature of our house during peak loads.  I laughed myself silly over that request.

68 I grew up in St. Louis (lots of humidity) with a mother that HATED air conditioning. On the rare occasions that she thought out loud, 'Is it hot in here?', we all jump up and close windows before she had a chance to stop us. If she went outside and there was the slightest breeze, she'd shut it off and open the windows....while we all melted. We had windows units for most of my younger years....they put in central air when I was in high school. I LOVE A/C!

I grew up on the Texas coast.  They didn't air condition the gym at my high school until 1996. (Two years after I graduated.) It was brutal during our volleyball two-a-days in August.  I could wring out every article of clothing I wore.  Thank goodness the rest of the school had A/C.

R-410a required buying all new gauges and gas handling equipment.  It operates at pressures stuff designed for R-22 can't handle, and its lubricant is utterly incompatible with R-22's, so a change from R-22 to 410a usually means repiping a joint if you don't want to risk compressor motor burnouts.

90 I've got an R-410A (Puron) AC unit. It doesn't cool nearly as well as my old R-22 system. Plus it runs longer using more power. Whenever these enviro-fucksticks mess with stuff they end up making things worse for the environment.

Our new house had a new ac in it, put in around 2011/2012. It's a "puron" unit. It seems to work pretty well though, it just brought the house down several degrees in the 90 degree heat here.

So far it seems reasonably efficient too. Our power bills weren't too bad in may but it was cool here.

I grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast, too.  My grandparents didn't have A/C.  When my grandfather retired, they moved to a house right on the Gulf that had central air, but they refused to run it even though they could more than afford to do so.  When we went there on vacation, my mom made them run it and paid heir electric bill.

NC State's east campus are all old buildings without AC.  The school wouldn't allow window units either because reasons.  There are several girls only dorms there.

The R-410a stuff was kinda rushed into the field due to the Montreal treaty requirements to phase out R-22.  People knew it was coming, but nobody wanted to really believe it until it happened.

The vendors market on two points -- efficiency for replacement sales, and CHEAP for initial builder sales.  The differences between R-22 units of 25 years ago and those when it finally was croaked was huge.  2.5-3T range it could be the difference between 21A and 8 or 9A draw.

105 I grew up in an Italianate brick farmhouse built in 1867.  No ac,  not even window units.  When it got really hot,  that house would heat up like a brick oven.

I used to sleep outside on the picnic table in the summer.

My schools had no a/c, neither elementary, junior high,  or high school.  I can remember how miserable it was sitting in a hot classroom wearing nylon stockings (bare legs not allowed).

A few years ago we went without A/c an entire summer.  Ours went out,  we needed a ne unit,  and we didn't have the cash.   I got used to it after a while, but my husband,  who was working locally then,  really suffered because he had a/c all day and then came home to heat.

You can get acclimated to it,  but it takes determination,  the right clothing,  and some time.

111 I remember living with my grandparents in S. FL (Titusville) when my dad went to Germany with the AF.  No A/C.  In a cinderblock house they rented while Grandpa worked at the Cape.

I remember the crank-out windows and lots of fans.  You'd fall asleep at night hot as hell, and at some point you'd pull the sheet over yourself because you were "getting chilly."

When we moved to Germany, there was no A/C to the best of my memory.  But we didn't need it.

I actually have fond memories of days in old beach houses, etc. with no A/C.  We were tougher stock back then.

112 We got the smart meters a few years ago, so far the only difference is that there's no need for someone to walk around reading the meters, the info is sent from the meter to the electric company. They've been offering the thermostats that can be connected to the internet that will allow the electric company to turn the a/c off for a few minutes  during peak usage so apparently the meters aren't capable of that or i'm sure they'd be doing it whether you wanted it or not.

I've found it keeps me from overeating.  If I eat too much, I'll suffer.  Stay a tad calorie deficient during the hottest part of the day and its not bad at all.

No power whatsoever, but people banded together and had neighborhood cookouts with the foods that would go bad in their freezers.  And somehow everyone survived without A/C.

First a Catholic Saint must either die for Christ or have lived an extremely pious life devoted to religious service or charity to even be considered for recognition as a saint.

Then those in the latter category have to have some great accomplishment that is considered.

Then the watch for miracles attributed to them AFTER THEY ARE DEAD starts.

THEN when they rack up enough of those, they are canonized as saints.

As always there is a standing complaint to the church that not enough lay persons get even considered for this.

174 The "ozone hole" was the politicized science warm-up act for the climate change scam. Some facts to ponder:

1. Where is most A/C used? Tropical and warm-temperate regions, right? And mostly in the Northern Hemisphere, because there is more land in the Northern Hemisphere, and more people, and more wealth, since A/C tends to be a luxury good.

2.Where is (was) the "ozone hole"? Found around the South Pole, in the southern winter, right? Why not around the North Pole, during the northern winter, especially as the North Polar regions are closer to the bulk of CFC emissions from A/C systems?

3. Ozone is not really the "shielding gas" in the "ozone layer". It's ordinary, everyday oxygen, the same O2 oxygen we breathe every day. What happens is that a quantum of UV light from the Sun strikes a molecule of O2, and it breaks in two, yielding two atoms of monatomic oxygen. Monatomic oxygen is insanely reactive, and it doesn't persist long. Most of it simply recombines into O2 again, but sometimes there are triple collisions, and the result is ozone, O3.This can readily be demonstrated at home, with an adequately powerful source of short-wave UV light. You used to be able to buy ozone lamps (you still can, I just checked ebay). There were an ordinary-looking light bulb, with a drop of mercury inside the bulb. Turn it on, and it emits purple light, visible light, plus some UV-C, which makes ozone as described above. The pungent odor is unmistakeable.

4. So why, the "ozone hole", and why only at the South Pole? Well, the ozone in the ozone layer is unstable, and breaks down over time, if not replenished. During the winter, the Sun is too low in the sky, or completely below the horizon in the polar zones, and there simply isn't enough UV reaching the atmosphere there to make new ozone, so the ozone created during the summer decays and vanishes; hence a hole. And why only in the South Polar region? Because the Southern winter occurs when Earth is farthest from the Sun in its elliptical orbit, and Northern winter occurs when the Earth is closest to the Sun. The South Pole is a lot colder than the North Pole for this same reason. The UV flux at the South Pole simply is less, for a longer time. The capacity of the normal oxygen to absorb UV is unimpaired, but ozone, which is the evidence for it having done so, vanishes when the UV flux is too low to worry about.

Kinda central'ish Palm Beach county.  Near Lake Worth, maybe 8-10mi inland.  

There's like about a 20mi North/South sweet spot in Palm Beach county where it doesn't get nearly as hot as Miami (or like that 100 degree Orlando shit) in the summer, and winters don't get freaking cold like in Jupiter and further north.

A 90 degree day is rare here in the summer, you may only get a couple of them, and freezing in the winter is equally rare.  I got by just fine this winter using just a single 1200W space heater.

I lucked out when I picked this joint.  20 miles north and winters would suck, 30 miles south down into Broward and summers would suck bad too.

There's like 11 or 12 distinct temperature bands in FL, I lucked into the one that was the best compromise.

Let some nitwit woman my inlaws recommended "house sit" our home in Brookhaven, ATL. 

I had cleaned the house so it was spotless, all the sheets and towels cleaned, etc.
The scrunt had the well equipped guest room and bath.

Anyhow, not long after we arrived in Disney Hell, our son got sick.  Then, a major blizzard hit the ATL and Southeast.

Long story short, we finally made it home to this:

House sitter hit our good wines and steaks, and threw a party.  Also threw a huge log in the fireplace, fucking up the great room.

In laws lost power at their house in Buckhead, and decided to stay in our house and sleep in our fucking bed.

We returned home to dirty sheets, wet towels all over the floors, and our wine collection and Omaha steaks depleted.

Anyway, she wouldn't take my money out of stubbornness. So I told her I wasn't coming to visit in the middle of the summer if she didn't get ac.

Sadly the window unit didn't go in the bedroom so to stay cool we slept in the family room.

250 I can't remember exactly - 96ish I guess,   I got the first-to-market R-410a  central AC.   Strictly TOL all the things, but it's been fussy.   I should have gone with a freon unit,  mabe a heat pump.  It would probably still be working.

251 Eons ago when I was stationed in the desert, the individual barracks rooms had A/C that ran through a switch that would trip when the maintenance guys cut power. They'd briefly chop power to all the barracks huts around 10 am, to ensure that everyone's A/C was turned off in the unoccupied rooms during the hot part of the day. If you were on odd shifts (like me), then you just had to suck it up and wait until the 140 degree interior temp would wake you so that you could turn the A/C back on. Ultimately, I got around it by duct-taping a rock on the switch so that it'd pop back on once they tripped the power.

261 I'll never feel like complaining about the heat, after hearing our son talk about being in the A-Stan desert for days/weeks in 120° heat.  He said one day he drank several bottles of water in an hour and was still dehydrated.  Ended up passing out tending to his vehicle.

269 I'm getting by on a hillbilly 3000 window unit and one of those atrocious portables.    Any HVAC experts at the HQ?    It stumped the technician I got out here at the end of last season.   It was running high on the low side and would cut out after running about an hour or two.  He extracted some of the R401a and then it wouldn't work at all, and it triggers the compressor bypass after about 45 seconds or a little less.   He got out of there quick after that.  Then it was all salesmen.

I've been reading that it might be the thermal expansion valve,  which was a new design for the new refridgerant - and had to be specially added to the coil/fan unit  when it was installed.   They make them better now I'm told.

Once back in the classroom, she openly mocked and derided anybody at the conference that didn't have a law degree. That included case workers, medical professionals, etc. The class laughed with her. I was the only one horrified.

283 The environmental "footprint" of home heating is *much* higher than home a/c. Double at least. It's 80F in the house and 110F outside. 30 degree swing. Most summer days its more like 20-25 degrees. A/C is almost always electric. So no additional evil emissions. Now for heating, lets say 70F inside and 20F outside. 50 degree swing. But it gets colder than 20F in a lot of places in North in the winter. So the swing is more like 50-70 degrees. Normal heat pumps don't work very well when it below 40F (which is why sometimes aux hearing coils are in the air handler). So we're looking at burning home heating oil (same as diesel really) or propane. Both evil greenhouse gas producers. Not to mention the other evil emissions from burning diesel. Clearly the bulk of the effort at improvement should be directed at evil heating devices like furnaces, boilers, and the like and not A/C.

If the compressor (where the hot air exhausts from) and the evap coil unit aren't reasonably well matched, there can be problems. 

The evaporator metering is typically done with capillary tubing (fixed orifice) simple/cheap or a TXV more complicated, but allows for on the fly regulation.

291 Thanks,  Spongebob.   Its Central AC and it took a licking in a very bad heat wave last year.   The capacitor went,   I fixed that,  but the switch was chattering.   I replaced the switch because the contacts looked a little dodgy. 

I'm assuming the tech was trying to address the overfill possibility,  but he just made it worse when he removed some R401.  He also suggested line restriction or low voltage.   The AC had been working very well until it wasn't anymore,   up until  a string power outages and 105ish days gave it a beating.

Any way to trouble shoot the compressor or TXV?    I have been reading the first TXV were a little under-engineered and my unit was the first of its kind in the area so I suspect it.

297 Purp - I definately have the TXV -  waiting for it to show up delayed installation of my unit when I bought it.   It had to have the TXV for the fancoil to work with the R401a .

The coil and compressor were fancypants, and  purchased and installed together by a good  co. that were the Carrier folks in this part of the town, a recommended match.

I've been reading the first valves aren't used anymore and they use a better one.     But I have no idea how to troubleshoot it or if it's just  a replace it and see what happens situation.

299 Low voltage will drop out a compressor on thermal overload because lower voltage increases current draw. 

If the cable run is long, through a hot attic, and the wire was minimally sized (typical), a lot of power can be sucked away simply by resistive heating of the wire.

When my mom was still alive and I had AC working, I upsized the wiring to the compressor from a 10g to 8ga.  She had no idea what wiring I was fiddling with, but when I came down out of the attic and turned the compressor back on she asked me what I'd done to the AC because she felt a difference in how it was operating.

Since they blocked all sorts of new and reliable electrical generation, they expected that the state would run out of juice at times and we citizens would just have to sweat it out.

Arnold vetoed a bill to make this optional.

The push for change in AC is more about patents on existing technology refrigerants running out.  Those holding the patents have a new refrigerant they want everyone to be forced to adopt when the old stuff is regulated as bad, because that's the way to make big money. 

To insure this happens, you buy off a few key politicians with campaign donations to help you push burrocrat regulations (if not also law) to require everyone use your new stuff, then donate some bucks to the greenie weenies to keep the greenies in line. 

Tea party donations?  Screw that idea -- they're not part of the program -- just because the IRS didn't take them fully out doesn't mean they deserve to get in on the flow...  That's why we support Boner's and Mitch's LOSERship teams...  The Ocrats, well, they're so green, they'll hop on command ...

302 The  Ozone Hole BS is an even bigger scam than AGW. There is absolutely no way Freon has anything what-so-ever to do with the Ozone Holes.

The Ozone Holes are naturally occurring phenomena - it is caused by the sunless winters at the Poles. Remember sunlight (UV) causes ozone in the first place. Lack of sunlight makes the ozone gradually fade away. The Ozone Hole at the North Pole is not as dramatic as the one at the South Pole for the same reason that the seasons are less dramatic in the Northern Hemisphere than the Southern; the Earth is closer to the sun in the Northern winter.  

The amount of Freon used by air conditioners is microscopic compared to the amount of air in the atmosphere; it is in the parts per trillion level.
