Thomas Friedman: I'm a Softheaded Idiot and You Should Ignore Me

You know, if I only had to write twice a week, I'm pretty sure I could avoid sounding stupid at least one of those two times.

Not Thomas Friedman.

We need to use every diplomatic tool we have to shame Assad, his wife, Asma, his murderous brother Maher and every member of his cabinet or military whom we can identify as being involved in this gas attack. We need to bring their names before the United Nations Security Council for condemnation. We need to haul them before the International Criminal Court. We need to make them famous. We need to metaphorically put their pictures up in every post office in the world as people wanted for crimes against humanity.
Yes, thereÂ’s little chance of them being brought to justice now, but do not underestimate how much of a deterrent it can be for the world community to put the mark of Cain on their foreheads so they know that they and their families can never again travel anywhere except to North Korea, Iran and Vladimir PutinÂ’s dacha. It might even lead some of AssadÂ’s supporters to want to get rid of him and seek a political deal.

i mean right here i'm writing a column pandering to liberals' desire to not intervene, but rather than speak to them like adults and say we're choosing between the evil of intervention and the evil of nonintervention, i'm spinning this ridiculous tale about "shaming" where we can have the world for no cost at all

It is easy for Putin, China and Iran to denounce American bombing, but much harder for them to defend Syrian use of weapons of mass destruction, so letÂ’s force them to choose. Best of all, a moral response Â— a shaming Â— can be an unlimited response, not a limited one.

Some of that might not be technically part of his column, but it seems implicit in what idiots would call "The Text," with capital letters, just like that.

8 It's kind of hard to shame people who have no morals or ethics ... case in point, Barack Obama and the Left.

They've abandoned every principle they professed to have to support Obama, who has himself flip-flopped (remember that, cocksucking media? And how you applied it to Romney and not Chicago Jesus?) on pretty much everything HE condemned Bush for.

You can't shame people like that. The best you can do is figuratively or literally hurt or destroy them to the point that they don't dare try it again. That's the problem with conservatives -- overall they seem to be better people than the Left. If they treated the Left exactly as they were treated ... methinks a LOT of this crap would stop.

Sorry for going OT, but the main point is sound, you can't shame the brazen and shameless.

Anyway, I've long since ignored Thomas Friedman... leftists who prolifically writes on every topic possible (Fareed " I was suspended for plagiarism" Zakaria is another good example) can't possibility have a qualified opinion because their thoughts are not guided by deep historical context--in contrast with conservative writers who generally use history as a guide to their undergirding philosophies. Hence, plagiarism... they do not have the intellectual depth for originality.

Jonah Goldberg is a good example of the converse; he is an outstanding academic researcher.

After all our diplomatic efforts have been used up, including bringing in the UN Security Council, and even some of the religious leaders, then we can safely say, we must not let him go any further, and seek to diplomatically, in a unilateral sense, bridge the gap that we currently are experiencing. Shame is not enough, in my view, we also need strict diplomatic emissaries brought in to negotiate and raise alarms.

Well, it's not the Gun Thread but I'll tell this story anyway. During WW I the Tsar had trouble keeping his soldiers supplied with rifles so he ordered a million and a half Moisin-Nagants from Remington and a million and a half more from Westinghouse. When the Bolsheviks took over, many of those rifles had not been delivered so they were sold cheaply in the 1920s and 1930s, sometimes for just a couple of dollars. Since so many of the rifles were around, ammunition makers started making ammunition for them and since they were comparable to .30-06 in power, much of that ammunition was soft point and hollow point for deer hunting.

Anyway, when WW II came along FDR sent his buddy Stalin all the 7.62X51R ammunition that could be found in warehouses without worrying about whether it was in compliance with the Hague Convention that banned the use of hollow points or soft nosed bullets in combat. The Russians found that US commercial ammunition was made with better QC than Soviet military ammunition and so it tended to be a lot more accurate. That is why they issued it to their snipers. The Wehrmacht complained about the Soviet Union violating international law by shooting their soldiers with expanding bullets but unfortunately Barack Obama was not President and cruise missiles had not yet been invented so nothing was done.

Ace, you picked out the stupid parts, yes, ...but... He also says we need to pick a good rebel group or two and help them so the country doesn't fall into the Al Queda camp in the end. Which is the Republican position, and has been for two years.

He also suggests dividing the country up among the tribes... yes he said that about Iraq.... but in this case, a smaller group of countries might be the answer rather than one all powerful dictator.

I dislike Friedman, but at least he is against getting us into an old fashioned Cold War proxy war with Putin!!!!!

I pick Friedman's way over Obama's.
