Tiny Munchkin wearing +10 cloak of invisibility gets locked in parked plane for hours.
— Purple Avenger

OK, I may have made up that part about the invisibility cloak, and the dude seems a bit larger than a Munchkin too.

A Louisiana man flying to California woke up on a dark, empty plane parked at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston after sleeping through the call to exit the aircraft, officials said on Monday...

...Company policy requires the flight crew to do a final sweep of the cabin and the company was investigating how Wagner was left onboard, Harrison said...

The crew better go with the invisibility cloak excuse. I can't see anything else working.

O/T, but Ben hasn't dumped, so shoot me.

On the other thread, Carol was talking about staying home all winter.  I mentioned to Mrs. P last night that I wish I could take a day off and just curl up on the couch with a big bowl of snacks and read all day.  Saturdays I end up sleeping most of the day and Sundays I feel I ought to be writing.  I've got a nice, thick book about leisure pastimes in Victorian England just waiting for me to dip into it, as well as a biography of Gloria Swanson and a new book on the "Fatty" Arbuckle case.  The problem is, where I work, I have to be there M-F, no excuses.

Nothing else.  Just felt like venting.  And BTW, I still recommend the short story The Love Letter by Jack Finney to the Horde.  It might make you feel better on this cold, lonely day.

80 I once fell asleep in a movie theater, around 3:00 PM or a bit later, on a summer day. When I woke up, the scene on the screen made me think I'd only been asleep no more than fifteen minutes. I decided to head home, since I'd already seen the movie I'd paid for and wasn't to struggle to stay awake for a repeat viewing of this one.

When I got outside it was dark. I'd been asleep for at least five hours. Even more upsetting is that when I got home nobody asked me where I'd been, being only fourteen and not given to disappearing. Apparently, everybody thought I'd been in my room the whole time or didn't even give it that much thought.

More recently, I fell asleep on the Metrolink on the rare occasion I had a job that let me make use of it. When I woke up I looked out the window and noticed the Costco, when meant my stop was two stations back. The train was already pulling out. If I didn't get off at the next stop I'd be stuck in Lancaster, which meant I had to wait around at the station in Acton with a whole lot of nothing around it, in 100 degree heat. It was a very long wait.

Talk about being left alone:

I knew a guy whose wife was pregnant and went to see the OB because something wasn't feeling right.  In fact, she was having a miscarriage.  The nurse examined her first and saw something wrong and said I'm going to get so-and-so (the doctor or whomever) and left.  She never came back.  Nobody came back.  They forgot her, left her in the examining room and closed the office for the day.  The poor wife waited a long time (I don't know, maybe she was used to waiting forever for doctors, or maybe she passed out) and finally went out into the hall and found everyone gone.  In the end she was fine (except for the miscarriage).  I never did hear how they handled it with the doctor's office.  Pitchforks and torches, I imagine.

86 When my son got left on the YMCA bus, it was parked at the depot where the other YMCA buses are left at night.  Luckily, the depot happened to be located next to one of their satellite YMCA's on the other side of town.  When I came to the school to pick him up, the Y counsellor (another good story on him later) tried to tell me in cryptic terms that he wasn't there.

"Ummm...where's my son?"

"Uhhh...you'll have to go to the other YMCA.  He's over there."

"Why is he there and not here?"

"Uhhhh...they'll tell you that when you get there."  *runs off*

So, I drive over to the other YMCA on the other side of town and the program director comes out to meet me.  She's pale because she explains to me with profuse apologies that my son was left on the bus and woke up alone.  He was clever enough to open the front door because he had seen the drivers do it so many times.  When he wandered off the bus, another lady who had just parked her car and was going inside spotted him and asked if he was ok and where his parents were.  He said he didn't know.  So she immediately brings him inside and alerts the front desk that they've got a lost child.  I can only imagine the DEFCON1 level of panic going through their minds when they tried to figure out what the hell happened.

I listened to her and told her that I was not going to involve any lawyers, though I was within my right to do so.  I thanked her for taking care of him until I got there and that no action would be taken on my part, except for a detailed explanation of what happened exactly.  Later on, they did contact me and told me that the driver, who was an older man, neglected to check the bus front to back as their SOP says to.  He just parked the bus thinking it was empty.  He was placed on leave and all the drivers and counsellors were given the "come to Jesus" talk about double-checking their vehicles before locking them up.

My wife was livid beyond description when I told her what happened.  She wanted me to sue the ever-loving piss out of anything with "YMCA" in their name.  I told her that this was a screw-up on their part, but that I did not want to put the YMCA into hardship because they do provide a valuable service to the local community in general.  Yes, they fucked up but I forgave them because they put it right in the end.  They fessed up and took care of my son and made sure that all their staff members went through retraining.

89 I fall asleep when I'm a passenger in a car for long periods. I'm told it's a nicer form of motion sickness instead of throwing up. Spouse cannot fall asleep as passenger ever because they had several experience where the driver started to fall asleep after driving back from a concert and they had to grab the wheel That or they had to watch the road like a hawk as a kid because their father was somewhat under the influence and liable to have impaired judgement and they had to yell up someone like, "Watch that car!!".

The Obamas weren't there as citizens, they were representing the United States. The office of president and role of FLOTUS are bigger than the petty troubles of whoever the current occupants are. She could have reigned him in quietly and let him know how she really felt later. Instead she let the world know she was pissed.

92 Back in 93, I think, there was a blizzard that shut down every airport from Atlanta to Maine. I was in Hawaii, trying to get back to Philly. I stayed with my friend an extra couple days, then tried to get back. Took 24 hours. The last flight was from Atlanta to Philly. I fell asleep when the plane was on the runaway and slept through us sitting on the runway for an hour and then the first 1.5 of the flight. Woke up when we started descending. The guy next to me glared at me for managing to miss all "fun" parts of the flight.

94 EC - That is a scary story. EVery parent's nightmare. Glad the YMCA took it seriously instead of immediately going into CYA mode.

97 >>The nurse examined her first and saw something wrong and said I'm going to get so-and-so (the doctor or whomever) and left. She never came back. Nobody came back. Ugh. That's awful. I passed out in a hospital after having an IV put in. The staff bumped the door on the way out and it closed. I passed out very very slowly. I was confused, thinking they must have put the drugs in, but they didn't tell me they were going to and they shouldn't have left me if they had. Woke up to them panicking and yelling at each other.

100 So, visiting Evanston in '73, I take the El down to the N side to visit a girl I'd met at college... and some of her family... and the guy she was living with... awkward^3. Which Is why, by the time her sister walked me back to the El, I was a wee bit intoxicated. Okay more than a wee bit. Nodding out on the train bit. (The tie-in, see?) My 2nd time on public trans ever, right? Every stop, if I was conscious, the car I was in would stop where I couldn't see a sign to figure out where I was. When my blurry brain finally put the blurry signs and the inscrutible map together, I realized I was heading into deepest South Chicago. I don't know what station it was where I finally got off to go back. I'm just glad it was deserted. Luckier than I deserve. BTW, the girl I went to visit? Forty years later, we are awaiting flour grandchildren...

102 This is dumb but I saw a big guy, drunk as hell, getting a pedicure, passed out. They had his shoes off, were tickling the soles of his feet to wake him, then slapping them Nothing
