Too Smart Technology [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

This post is sure to garner a few "Get off my lawn" responses and , just maybe, I'm becoming an old fogey but, frankly, I just don't want my television to be smarter than I am.

Take a look at the site for the new Samsung "smart" television.

It's suppose to replace your computer for certain functions, such as web browsing and Skype calls, but.... do you really want it to recognize your face when you turn it on?

Personally, I say "No."

Maybe I'm becoming a bit paranoid but, tell me, given the recent discoveries about NSA programs such as PRISM, do you want a camera aimed at the center of your living room... or bedroom.

Call me old fashioned, but I long for the simple times when WE watched the t.v., not the other way around.

What are your thoughts? Am I being paranoid?

9 So wife is in NYC. Got her a limo. Driver shows up 30 minutes late, twice. Then mouths off about it. I am trying to be MR Nice Guy and this fucker is screwing me over. The company fired him and then the second fucking driver who didn't show up. They basically said no one wants to work on Sat and they were sorry, no charge. So unemployment is so bad you can not find someone to drive a car on Sat?

14 The biggest problem with "smart tv's" is that they're really not that smart, the browsing is ok but anything beyond that is pretty limited. You're better off getting a regular tv and buying a cheap refurbished computer to hook up to it for around $150, you'll have full computing abilities and it'll end up costing the same or maybe a little less.

37 I'm pretty much of a Luddite; I have a cell phone but it's a really old one and has no gizmos and gadgets. My TV reception died and now all I can get on it is DVD and movies. I have a name on Facebook but no profile and never use it. I don't tweet. My computer terminal is old. I don't want the latest and greatest modern stuff and with all the spying info coming out I think I've made the correct decision. Of course, i may be locked up in the gulag because I have Verizon, but I imagine they'll go after people with a higher profile than I have first (That a was a lame joke by the way. All this spying disturbs me, NDH and SHOULD disturb any decent American.

I have a Panasonic smart tv though it doesn't have a camera and I do like being able to stream Prime (Priiiiiimmmmeeee) and Netflix stuff directly through the tv.   I have no desire to have one with a camera built into it.   No.   Just no.

The Xbox One, Microsoft's upcoming game console, will require that a Kinect is always attached. The Kinect has a microphone and infrared and regular cameras and the Xbox has built-in facial recognition.

It's believed that Microsoft will track your eyes to see what ads you are watching. The Kinect will also be able to monitor your heart rate using one its cameras so, presumably, they could figure out what commercials you were watching and how they effected you emotionally.

Microsoft has patented the ability to monitor how many people are watching a movie on the Xbox to force people into compliance with their licensing structure -- if they feel that too many people are in the room, they will turn off the movie or charge you more.

Oh, yeah, and the NSA has an unknown level of access to Microsoft's servers.

Yup, that was in the great Philly area.   The only reason they got caught is because some kid was busted for smoking pot and the only place he ever smoked up was at home.  His parents got asking questions and that's how it was discovered.

well now you're just completely mixing up rumors, patents and software. You can go to any company and go through their patents and find all sorts of crazy ass shit. Rumors don't mean much of anything with out facts. As for the heartbeat stuff, it's more or less just a refined version of the freeware software (that any webcam can use) that though can be used in console software (can't see how stuff like Nike+ Fitness doesn't use it) but it's mainly for the garage hobbyist, the people who use the Kinect for weird experiments, robotics and healthcare.

Word. I, too, have a Panny (50" plasma) likely with the same apps. Occasionally, Pandora is kinda nice, though using a giant plasma TV for a music device (don't forget the 5.1 receiver that's also on!) is a bit impractical. The Netflix app (when I subscribed) was okay, but it wouldn't allow me to use grey bars for 4:3 material so I always used my PS3 for that.


A (detachable) camera would be nice for video chats, but I can use my laptop for that since I don't feel like paying $75 or whatever it is that Panny wants for it.

And facial recognition wasn't part of the Kinect from the start, Primesense had it part of the package they sold to MS but it wasn't part of the console SDK. It was only part of the PC SDK which is for tinkerers and programmers which wasn't even that great due to sensors and cameras in it being too lo-fidelity to properly be acurate. IMO, it's quite amazing in all the cool stuff that the garage hobbyist sector has done with the original Kinect.

Anyway, it said that it was some type of commerce software  that   could even be used when the phone was off.  I'd look it up but,  Saturday.

193 i have a buddy who is retired Special Forces who now works for a company that does tagging and tracking of hostiles in Afghanistan. They rig up cell phones that they are are able track the bad guys in real time, remotely turn on the camera and mic as well as very precise location info. They also do similar things with the bad guys vehicles. Kinda like Bait Car but, the kill switch actually does what it says.

I bought mine brand new nearly 13 years ago and, dang it, I'm gonna get my money's worth. Actually, she's been pretty damned reliable. If it weren't for her 3.0l engine (also used in Camrys, etc) being prone to filling with sludge, I'd recommend getting one used. I'm getting to the mileage (~110k) where if that's going to happen to me, then it's right around the corner.

Actually this is a great opportunity for someone to market tin foil (probably something heavier ) cases for cell phones and Ipads etc. Put them in the case when you are done using them and want privacy overnight. The last time I looked into it, it was actually a scan (very high speed), and the character stuff is OCR'd. Except for the carrier, I do not believe that anyone ever looks at the address. In point of fact, except for sorting at the local P.O. for delivery, the ZIP code is unused. You've probably noticed the bar codes sprayed on.  Handling for flats/packages is different, last I paid attention.

I'm far more concerned about the additional complexity of modern cars as well as the replacement/"enhancement" of key systems in order to squeeze out another fraction of an MPG to comply with arbitrary CAFE standards. Take, for example, hydraulic power steering systems that are replaced with electric versions which render steering IMPOSSIBLE (rather than arduous) should the system fail. Crap like that bugs me.

You have to engage in a fair level of exertion for the system to detect any change, so it's barely useful in an exercise app, never mind casual observation.

Eye tracking? Again, overhyped bullshit. At living room distances the 2nd gen Kinect simply doesn't have the resolution to do better than make educated guesses about which way your head is facing.

The 2nd gen Kinect is a big improvement but much as Microsoft oversold the previous one, they went overboard in making claims for this. Stuff that a toddler can do is still immensely hard to match with a computer.

Is there potential for abuse here? Sure, but it's far more mundane and less fanciful than the hysteria crap floating around the net currently.

No console maker has control over that. The only factor that matters is whether PC games, specifically those that would never see a console release, sell enough to make money or not. Microsoft has sold a fair number of games it didn't see as fitting the console market. (I always thought the artificial separation was a mistake. The original Xbox could have had a huge library of ports from the PC market if they'd tried to leverage that as well as offer traditional console fare. The original Xbox had empty pads on the motherboard to have 128 MB, which would have helped for porting PC fare and giving the platform a leg up for all purposes but it was deemed too expensive when the time came to freeze the spec.)

What makes you think they're going to have any less hype this time around, relative to what the device actually delivers? Swapped engines and rebuilt the TH350 at 345,000 miles. Drove it everyday until I purchased the GT in March 2006. Classic plates now on the ole Chevelle. Yep, I tend to keep cars a long time.

398 Come to think of it, in the first episode of Max Headroom the plot revolved around the recording Bryce Lynch (Network 23 R&D) made of a home viewer. The character literally exploded from an intensely concentrated commercial campaign. Nobody expressed any shock or surprise that network R&D was snooping on it's viewers. Bryce even referred to it as "a recording taken from a routine two-way sampler." Routine. They knew they were being watched.
