Happy Friday.

The text of the Toomey-Manchin amendment is finally available. It does not contain the provision that Erick Erickson warned of. The NRA's characterization of it, though, was completely accurate.

"Republicans are passing around the popcorn." Yes. Yes we are.

The Obama Administration gave four more F-16s to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The actor suing IMDb for revealing her age lost her lawsuit. She's also presumably been made aware of the Streisand Effect.

28 - "The text of the Toomey-Manchin amendment is finally available. It does not contain the provision that Erick Erickson warned of. The NRA's characterization of it, though, was completely accurate." Amazingly enough no such proposal ever was offered in the Senate, much less voted upon, at any point between Jan. 1995 and February 2013, despite the likes of Columbine and others having occurred in the interim. Of course the Ericksons of the world, along with the Angles, O'Donnells, Bucks, Akins, Mourdocks, etc., are so lost in space they would not be able even to connect the obvious dots. In any case, the easiest way for the House to deal with that measure, assuming it passes the Senate, is simply to amend it with tort reform, a supermajority requirement for future restrictions and some preemption of local gun restrictions. Then it'll die quickly in conference and that will be that. - "The Obama Administration gave four more F-16s to the Muslim Brotherhood." The presidency has actual consequences. By now even H. Ross Perot has figured that out.

35 New science standards have the AGW scam at the core. When did science not become science? It bears watching, and leftist teachers will put their own spin on it (which is the real problem), but I don't see anything in the materials (from the examples given) that supports AlGorism. 56 Sequester Budget Cuts Likely Mean The End Of New York CityÂ’s ‘Fleet WeekÂ’ Memorial Day Week Tradition Is Apparently Thrown Overboard With No Lifejacket NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — In a surprising announcement, the U.S. Navy has informed New York City officials that federal budget cuts may keep aircraft carriers and destroyers from sailing into New York Harbor for Fleet Week. The NavyÂ’s jets are expected to be grounded too, ending a 26-year tradition, CBS 2Â’s Marcia Kramer reported Thursday. “No branch of the armed forces which, in our case, includes the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard team may participate in community relations or outreach efforts that come at additional cost to the government,” Navy Mid-Atlantic Region spokeswoman Beth Baker told WCBS 880′s Marla Diamond. In his 12th and final year as mayor, Michael Bloomberg will have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to find a way to celebrate Fleet Week without the fleet. Very sad, very sad indeed

One clergyman complained that while he was out selling cakes for his church, "evil took [his] son. " Hey Reverend: the gun used was not evil.

101 The idiotic "conservatives" who voted straight Democrat to protest the socialism of the "new, improved" old farts GOP chose very poorly, indeed. You can't protest v. GOP by voting DNC, nor visa versa, they being two sides of the same corrupt coin that "buys" the enslavement of the American citizenry. If it's less government involvement into our entire lives that is desired, and the point of your ballot in the election is to cast a protest vote to halt the status quo, then vote third party libertarian or constitutional ballot choices. How did "strengthening" the electoral results of Obama's and the Democrats' victories help the US working stiff taxpayers? The only message heard by the Republican neoconservative Leadership was that Socialism Wins, and if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. That, and see what fraud we all can get away with in office.

Miss Marple, of course it's understandable to believe the worst of Obama, and to believe Republicans in Washington can and will capitulate on important things, because they  often do.

This however, looked too much like a "let's pass something so we can say we did" type of thing.  I know you understand politics very well, and that's what this was/is.  The politics of optics.

Again though, it would be nice if there were  MORE  Republicans in Washington who could articulate something resembling a defense of our 2nd Amendment rights, but there aren't.  Some of them are   still too scared, I believe, to be branded as the people who want more dead 6 year olds.

I  have no faith in these people, and I am sure they do what they do for their own benefit first, and if it happens to be the right thing, that's often an accident.

I don't believe that is a flaw in the system, however.  I think that IS the system.  We have a job to do as well, which is to hold their feet to the fire and MAKE them do the right thing, if we can.

And if we can't, well....  that's why they wrote the second amendment the way they did.

We establishment politicians, secure in our sinecures and living well off the people, know what the Founders really meant: "No armed subjects!"

175 Don't draw attention to yourself unless it is for a really big amount, and even then expect an audit from Obama's IRS minions! I'm not doing anything. That's just the sort of boilerplate text everyone should include in e-mails, knowing that they could be looked at*. I figure the IRS can already look directly into our checking account, see the payments to all the taxing authorities, see the local, state, and other tax deductions on the W-2's. There's probably some computer algorithm they apply to every tax return that 'scores' them in regards to potential for extracting further tribute. *As opposed to Facebooking, tweeting, and emailing brags about your new car, second home, boat, etc while claiming 10k earnings as a waiter/waitress. Some people are smart while simultaneously dumb.

I actually put this exact question to my radically anti-gun father.  His response:  "Obama's children are more likely to be targeted."

"But the odds that my own children are targeted is greater than zero," said I.

"Yes," he agreed, "but the odds that the President's children are targeted is exponentially greater, and therefore they need more protection."

"Oh," I responded.  "So seperate but equal."

178 The question is how to change the Washington establishment. Electing conservatives does nothing, because the establishment takes them as they arrive an co-opts them. McConnell and Boehner (or their nearest equivalent) will remain in leadership, and we'll continue to get the Dem-lite kind of governance that we currently enjoy.

The old shows should be fine, shouldn't they? And the audience rotates out naturally as they age and are replaced with new kids, who haven't seen the old stuff yet. And why does it need to be close-captioned, anyway? The show is for pre-readers. They're going to read along with a show teaching them to read? These are a few of the things that piss me off about the 'Republcians want to kill Big Bird' shit.

223 It's nice that we have so many on our side who are vigilant and police our side constantly for bad leaks or mistakes so they can quickly screech "Hysterics"! and paint us all as wingnuts. I mean it's not as if the government would actually do anything to harm us, right? Our right-minded monitors get to look all reasonable to their "friends" on the other side while handing their "friends" ammo to paint us as crazy.

And so what if sometimes the truth actually lies part way between? So is the standard that WE have to be 100% right all the time immediately; them, never, no accountability required.

Another trend I notice is a site like Breitbart is constantly criticized for headlines used to catch eyeballs - isn't that what we're supposed to be doing? Yet, BuzzFeed is all cool and stuff and we're not allowed to criticize anyone who goes there to trash conservatives or otherwise.

I understand we want to accurate but mistakes get made. I just don't get the sneering and need to paint conservatives as crazy to diminish us. The left publishes malicious lies on purposes. If we're on the same side, why not direct our efforts against the enemy?

236 Four more F-16 fighter jets left the U.S. on Thursday headed for Egypt as part of a foreign aid package that has generated controversy given the political upheaval in the Mideast country. Critics say the military aid should stop because the president Egyptians elected last year has led the Muslim Brotherhood, called President Obama liar and urged that hatred of Jews be instilled in children. A source who works on the naval air base in Fort Worth, Texas, confirmed to FoxNews.com the departure of the state-of-the-art fighter planes. The new shipment brings the total number of F-16 jets given to Egypt this year to 12. Eight more F-16s will be given to the Egyptian government before the end of the year as part of a billion-dollar foreign aid deal signed in 2010 with then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, a longtime U.S. ally. The U.S. also will send 200 Abrams tanks.

241 #223 jeannebodine,  Since I used the term "hysterics,"  I will assume you are addressing me.

Our coin in trade for converting others to our cause is Truth.   There is nothing wrong with picking up a rumor and saying, "This is a rumor which was leaked to me,  may or may not be true."

When it is presented as FACT then we have a problem,  because in the unfair media world in which we live, we will be painted as nutburgers who make stuff up because we hate Obama.

So an error like Erickson made (which,  given his past history, was perhaps done to draw eyeballs to his site and also to make himself look like an insider with great sources) is very damaging.

The truth in this case does NOT lie somewhere in between.  Either the doctor provision was in the bill,  or it was not.  It was not. The end.

Meanwhile,  due to the false claim which we wasted time on,  no one is really discussing the provision for requiring background checks for other types of sales,  which is not a small thing.

And now it is Friday,  which means that we go into the weekend having wasted a news cycle on a falsehood.

I hope you understand why I am upset about this.  I have said this before: the conservative movement is too often yanked around by people who have their own ego and financial interests as their primary motivation,  rather than that of the country.  I can provide many, many examples of this if you like.

245 Now on the upside.

Backstory is, Mrs VIA has been terrified of guns her entire life.
Three weeks ago she picked up a .22 revolver, for the first time ever.

Mrs VIA and I went to the range yesterday during "Ladies Day"
She moved up to a HK 9mm, did 35 rounds, and loved it.

Excellent grouping, with about six in the "X", and nothing outside of main body mass.

On the way home, I realized that she and I have never gone over the concept of sight picture.
We have only focused on basic safety, (Don't turn and point gun at VIA while asking question) proper grip, pull the trigger, and see if the recoil is manageable.
Her explanation is that she just points it where she wants the bullet to go, and there it goes.

She signs up for the Basic Handgun course next week.

Congratulations to you as well for overcoming your past experiences.
From Mrs VIA, I can understand what it takes to take that first step that seems so easy for many people. It's huge, scary, and can define you for many years.

One of the gunsmiths up there is a kindly old gentleman. Soft spoken, never pushy. He came out to the lanes the first time we were there, and worked with her for just a few minutes while she mentally worked her way up to the edge of the mental diving board where the trigger pull was.

I encourage any of the 'Ettes that are in the same situation to try it.
You may love it.
You may hate it.
You may be indifferent to the entire experience.
But you will go through the rest of your life knowing for a fact that if needed, you could shoot a firearm.

While it was a fine specimen, Nevergiveup's red head did have a magnificent example, so I think she gets the nod.

321 I think the Norks are going to launch. I think it will be a nuke. Where it hits is anyone's guess.

325 It would be fucking hilarious if the Nork missile got blown off course by strong winds and landed somewhere in China.  Not that I'd enjoy seeing people in China getting nuked, but the irony of China's constant egging of Jong-Un resulting in their petard hoisting.

329 So as I understand it now, that report that the Norks can put a Nuke on a Missile was classified and that idiot congressman should not have read it out loud. Who the fuck is in charge in DC or has the guy who stamps things 'Top Secret" been furloughed by sequester?

I will state for the record,

I have had guns pointed at me with the intent to shoot on no less than 3 occasions during my life.  Once by a police officer who mistook me for a burgler, once by a homeowner who mistook me for a vandal, and once by a

"Yut" in Oakland who was robbing me at gun-point for the money I had just pulled out of an A.T.M....very bad situational awareness on my part...so what is the point?

I carry....every day......cause bad things happen and you have to be ready to stop the "Bad Thing" 1st!  You can't call 911 with a bullet in you head,

and P.D will never be there in time....

I carry!

Actually the USC and Bill of Rights are radical documents even today.  The idea that individudal liberty is acknowledged as G-d given and my consent is required before sumbitting to elelcted body of men to govern.

Totalitarians (aka democrats) hate those documents for a reason.

So what's the difference.

He knows it too. That's what's so interesting. Why did he do it? He knows this will likely lose re election. (unfortunately it looks like to a Democrat)

It seems a lot of what you would think are smart people look like they're being strong armed into taking positions contrary to their own beliefs and  best interest.

It's almost as if they're being COERCED.
