Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. And thanks for the music and morning briefing, Gabe and Vic. You know, it occurred to me on the drive to work: if TFG wants universal background checks for guns, maybe the gutless GOP ought to agree – but not unless and until Democrats pass a law requiring photo ID at the ballot box.
Ah, who am I kidding? The GOP stand up for the integrity of the vote? Never happen.
Anyway – I wasn’t able to nail down a couple of details on the Addams Family house, so that story, sadly will have to wait. In the meantime, allow me to bring back a blast from the past, in the hope that some of you may not have read it and the rest of you have been so drunk and / or in a food coma that you don’t remember it:
One of the first stories I ever told concerned the MGM-sponsored brothel known as “Mae’s.” Their specialty was providing women who were near-perfect doubles of Hollywood stars such as Claudette Colbert, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis or even, infamously, Shirley Temple. Each woman was dressed and made up by MGM technicians and all were heavily briefed in the latest studio gossip.
This story concerns a writer – I can’t remember right now whether it was Garson Kanin or Heywood Broun, so let’s call him J.J. – who was writing additional dialogue for a Carole Lombard film. Like virtually everyone, J.J. fell hopelessly in love with the sexy, earthy Lombard, and his puppy-dog eyes and besotted attitude were an on-set joke.
J.J.Â’s birthday happened to occur during the shoot, so his friends decided on an extra-special gift. They got Lombard to write a note, asking J.J. to meet her at some private location, and then took him to MaeÂ’s, where a Lombard double was waiting, dressed in a sheer satin negligee that left nothing to the imagination.
While his friends occupied themselves playing with the other girls, J.J. and “Carole” fell into deep conversation, talking about the problems on set and whether the film would wrap in time. Occasionally, “Carole” would drop hints about the trouble she was having in her relationship with Clark Gable, subtly encouraging J.J. to think the two of them might take up together after the movie. And then, of course, all roads lead to Rome; hand-in-hand, the two went upstairs and J.J. spent the night happily exploring “Carole’s” holy of holies.
On set the next day, he was still over the moon; at least, until the real Lombard came up and slapped him on the shoulder. “I hear we fucked last night. Was I good?”
J.J. flushed red with embarrassment, but Lombard took it all in stride, pumping him for information on her double and about Mae’s, all the time shrieking with laughter. After giving J.J. a long, lingering birthday kiss, she ended up by saying, “I’ve got to tell Clark about this place!” Then, remembering the King of Hollywood’s less than impressive scepter, she reconsidered: “No, I better not. He’d go there. And she’d be so disappointed!”
Hope you enjoyed that. And I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. In fact, what better way to spend the weekend than by losing yourself in 1914 New York through the pages of my book, The DirectorÂ’s Cut: A Theda Bara Mystery, available on Kindle or through the Amazon or Barnes and Noble websites?
See you all with a new story on Monday.

Especially this part;
"In both substance and process, the bill which recently passed at the
governors urging and with the support of our legislature will become
infamous for several reasons. Notwithstanding the lack of a concise goal
it will truly accomplish, these primarily include the lack of
transparency, debate and comment from the governed they serve. Our government agreed to suspend those wise measures to pass and enact a law they
deemed necessary and proper. Where did they get such power to subvert
the people and our Constitution? Why did they rush it through and fear
the peopleÂ’s review? Those are questions we should all be asking
ourselves and legislators at the moment."
More frightening is the governor believes this type of behavior will appeal to a national electorate...

California has been awarded a $674 million federal grant to continue developing and building an online insurance marketplace under the federal health care reform law, state officials announced Thursday. The state is receiving substantial support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of the effort to aid millions of uninsured Mexicans -- er --Californians...

California teens could submit paperwork to get on the state's voter rolls three years before they are allowed to cast a ballot under legislation introduced this week.
Senate Bill 113, by Democratic Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, would let Californians "preregister" to vote at age 15, giving the state the nation's youngest minimum age for submitting an affidavit of registration.
While the teens would not be able to vote until turning 18, the Santa Barbara Democrat said she hopes the change would increase the number of active voters by linking the "positive experience" of getting a learner's permit at the Department of Motor Vehicles with registering to vote.

I never could understand why Lugar didn't just retire. Everyone would have forgiven his erratic votes of the last several years, feted him with banquets and awards, pointed out again his genius in Unigov (expanding city limits to include all of Marion County giving us a fair shot at a GOP mayor in Indianapolis) and everyone would have been unified and happy.
He was too old to run for another 6-year term, as he is 80 now. This made no sense.
So I fall back on my theory that he was being blackmailed and that is why he voted the way he did. And blackmail forced him to stay in office and also caused him to be divisive about Murdock's victory and primary loss.

I think Bush didn't pick him because Bush wanted to reduce US presence on the world stage and probably try to sneak a small force reduction in during the "reset" he campaigned on.
Bush ran on "help is on the way" at military stops he pointed out that 10th Mtn had been home about 1/6th of a decade. They had more Stick Time afield than 82d and 101 combined. Clinton ran the military into the ground and the American people knew it.
Dick Dick Dick would have been pushing for an overt and over the top unilateral reduction in strategic forces at the same time Bush was trying to alter the conventional force matrix. Bush wanted to try to get Poland into Nato overtly and push "the west" east. Dick Dick Dick liked to placate the Russians.
Bush will go down as probably the last America focused PotUS IMHO.

" the vice president said the Obama administration does not have the time to fully enforce existing gun laws."
This needs to be screamed from the rooftops. Oh, you don't have the time to fully enforce gun laws? Then why did you bother with the dog and pony show with your toothless 23 "suggestions"?
I know, I know, the optics. The NRA should run with this quote -- show that monkeybutt David Gregory's face over the audio of it, then show the media coverage of Sandy Hook.
Beat them with their own bludgeon -- ask why Obama's Adminstration doesn't have time to do its job, but it has the time to stage press conferences, uze children as propoganda pieces, and demonize the NRA.
Smash them in the face with this, every day. Alinsky the hell out of them, and wait for that thin-skinned JEF to melt down, hopefully on live TV.

Yeah, I don't really get the disapproval of the "sugar babies" who hit up rich old dudes for tuition money in exchange for "companionship." It's a lot less greedy/selfish than demanding the taxpayers pay your way and get nothing in return. Sure, you're a prostitute, but after decades of being told that "sex work" is noble and "empowering"...meh.

Yup...they are going to do an amazing job of fucking up mashed taters for about 25 years I'd wager...the problem is they will have this a majority hispanic nation by then or go out of their way to import as many Somalis and Muslims as they can so when people are recoiling from communism or at a minimum and to be more polite "collectivism" to a simple strong man junta.....
this nation is so blessed in people and resources politicians should not be able to fuck it up....but they excel at overpromising even with people having tummy aches from the opulent table.
I hate them.

These stories are quite interesting, Mary Poppins, but they don't endear me to the Hollywood set who seem entirely self absorbed, narcissistic, shallow and sex obsessed. Are there ANY good stories about kind things they did, any stories not about sexual antics?
There are some, certainly, FenelonSpoke, though Hollywood, being the sort of place that it is, tends to remember the outrageous stories. But here's a nice one:
During the filming of her last movie, Tugboat Annie in 1933, Marie Dressler was dying of cancer. MGM head Louis B. Mayer knew this, but didn’t want Dressler (who did have some history of emotional problems) to sink into depression, so had her doctors give her upbeat estimates of her prognosis. While on location, Dressler saw a little thatched cottage with a picket fence and rosebushes; she mentioned to a co-star, “When I retire, that’s just the kind of house I want.” When Mayer heard of this, he had the studio carpenters, set designers and landscapers build an exact duplicate of the house on Catalina Island, and gave it to Dressler as a gift. And that’s where she lived until she died in 1934.
I’m sorry about the “sexual antics” if you don’t like them. It was the first story that came to mind this morning (which tells you something about me). But I’ll try to find some happier stories for you, I promise.

Well just got home from hanging out with the anime/gamer/FSA nuts.
There is J who seems to oscillate between passing college and not, while desiring to always be at a con or in a mosh pit. Then there is E, he is the sarcastic angry slacker who never does anything. H was wearing a dog collar while she busily did another furry sketch, asked her if she wanted to tackle book cover but she has shown no interest. Across the booth from H is S, she is blond with multiple piercings who just exists to orbit H. C1 is a big teddy bear of a guy, easily going nowhere. C2 is a smaller teddy bear but is always being dominated by H, E, C1, and others. C3 is probably the only one who will make anything of himself, amateur videographer who is studying Chinese in college. Finally for special snowflake mention is Brony Boy - skinny black guy with goatee who is living for his PS3 this Friday while wearing a Rainbow Pony hoodie [baby blue hoodie with a rainbow mane on the hood and little baby blue wings sewn on back].
This is the future it seems. I am going to pull the covers over my head and wish this world away.

The difference is that in the old days, the studios kept all of this scandal out of the papers. Despite how their employees acted in their personal lives, we saw the image of happy marriages, wholesome young starlets, and patriotic Americans.
With the collapse of the studio system there is no longer a brake on their public behavior, whether personal or political. I do not consider this progress.
Was the old studio system phony? Yep. However, because of it we didn't have traitorous stars consorting with communists in the middle of a war, nor sexual escapades held up as examples to youth.

At the end of every year I check out the WSJ's best-of list for rock/pop/whatever and just start reserving all that shit at the library. Not all of it dovetails with my taste but it never falls below a certain level of quality and keeps me from having to slog through all the shit. I remember reading something in one of Miss Manners' books about how an invitation to the White House is one that you cannot refuse...or maybe the only one that trumps an invitation you already accepted.
Whatever. None of those singers will never be supported by me again. Funny, it looks like the 1%-ers are heavily represented. Why wasn't the bum downtown who sings/chants "Can anyone buy me a sandwich? Please, can someone buy me a sandwich today? Just a sandwich, I'm so hungry, can anyone buy me a sandwich today?" included? Now that's a musical representation of Obama's America. And I'm sure he'd like some quail eggs and dove tongues as a change of pace from sandwiches.

I suppose some would think he "deserved" it for being willing to sleep with a woman he knew was involved with someone else, but I could never have found it funny. Yes, J.J., Mayer's a hard man to like. Although Thalberg himself, who could "piss ice water," in the words of one director, when he had to, was no naif, he didn't deserve the backstabbing he got from Schenck and Mayer - or that comment "Isn't God good to me!" that Mayer made coming back from Thalberg's funeral.
Still, I think my lesson today is to do a little discreet censoring of stories from here on in.

We come from the people who survived the Holocaust, the Clearances, and the Potato Famine. Our people didn't collapse during the Depression and the Dust Bowl.
Of all nations, our country is the only one whose entire history was shaped not by kings and nobility, but by the common man. And America will NOT collapse. We may turn inward; we may have bad times; fools may try to wreck the nation; but in the end, I firmly believe that we will prevail.

Human nature never changes, and as the saying goes, those who refuse to learn history are condemned to repeat it.
However, within Dark Age Europe my ancestors managed to make it and see their descendents emigrate to a new country with opportunity. Our job may be nothing more than the responsibility to preserve civilization, like the monks did in their semi-fortress monasteries during those frightening times.

Vic, the running Joke at The Citadel was that the Faculty, who are in uniform, are the South Carolina Unorganized Militia (SCUM). However, the unorganized militia is a term that is defined in Army Regulations, and is apart and separate from the Guard and Reserves. Additionally, many states have organized militias, usually refered to as "State Defense Forces". New York even has a "Naval Militia".
