— Gabriel Malor Happy Wednesday.
Rep. Paul Ryan on why he voted for the fiscal cliff deal: "I came to Congress to make tough decisions - not to run away from them." Alright, then. Two months from now he'll have another tough decision to make when the sequester cuts come due again. We're also due to run into the debt ceiling sometime between now and then.
The House has put off a vote on the Senate's bloated Sandy relief bill. House leadership had planned to confront it in two stages, with a scaled-back $21 billion bill just including things like actual Sandy relief, which was expected to have broad GOP support, and a $33 billion amendment including the Senate's pork, like money for fisheries in Alaska, which most of the GOP congressmen would vote against. I've heard it said that "emergency" legislation like this should be considered "must-pass," since it looks so bad not to, but that sounds like so much RINO bullshit to me.
A hacker group is claiming that it has stolen the entire subscriber list to the Lower Hudson Journal News, the paper that published the names and addresses of gun owners, and then posted the subscribers names, email addresses, passwords, and home addresses online. William Jacobson has the details.
Back to the fiscal cliff, there's a lot of moaning about Republicans "paying the price" for yesterday's fiscal cliff drama, by which I mean not just the vote, but also the all-day Three Stooges routine put on by the House GOP. I don't think that's true. Most GOP members get to go back to their districts and say they voted against the plan, which will no doubt please their majority-GOP constituents. The ones that voted for the plan were already on solid ground in their more purple districts. They get to go back and say they averted tax hikes for their constituents.
Each of these two categories of Republican congressmen are going to count their actions as qualified victories when they seek reelection. So, of course, neither group has much incentive to change anything about the way they acted the next time around. Did I mention the sequester and debt ceiling debates are just around the corner?

Congress gave its final approval Tuesday to a bill halting massive tax hikes and delaying a risky round of spending cuts, sending the package to the presidentÂ’s desk and likely averting for now an economy-stalling fiscal crisis. President Obama said he would sign it.

Alaska is going rogue on climate change.
Defiant as ever, the state that gave rise to Sarah Palin is bucking the mainstream yet again: While global temperatures surge hotter and the ice-cap crumbles, the nation's icebox is getting even icier.
Who says global temps are surging hotter? Liars say that and AK is not the only State getting cooler. Here in SC actual measured high temps ranged a total of 5.1° colder than last year.

One of those looks interesting.
In a post-apocalyptic world where the earth is buried by asteroid dust that has mutated the DNA of some humans, being different is downright dangerous.
And thatÂ’s it for Wednesday, January 02, 2013.

If you have been going to home depot as often as have been over the last year or so you could see the handwriting on the wall.
Most of the compact fluroescents and led bulbs offer themselves as 60watt or lower replacements.
Any 75-100 watt equivelent replacement was exorbinantly expensive.

And they lie; depending on the brand they produce up to 25% less light as measured in lumens. The output in lumens is right there on the package. I don't know if consumers can't do the math or if they just prefer believing warm fuzzy lies about polar bears.
Our betters truly want us to be in the cold and the dark and want us to have crappy low flow toilets and low flow showers and basically want life to be miserable.
And seriously, I think less than a third of Americans will even notice the dark. The rest don't do anything at night that requires light--they watch TV, play video games, sext, Facebook. People who read, sew, build stuff in the garage or basement shop, even clean their bathrooms after a long day of earning wages for the government to confiscate--productive things that require light--we're a minority.

And then they will be flabbergasted by the low turnout in 2014. Dems will not have a low turnout problem. That reelection is disappearing in the distance.

His conclusion is all wrong, but he is correct about the deficit and the fact that this does nothing to solve it. The Dems will be back looking for more hikes, but now the GOP can point to this vote and say "we gave you what you wanted, so don't ask for more". People will remember this battle and agree with them. Will it happen? Yes, I think it will.
For all the complaining about him, I think this was always Boehner's strategy, and it might work.

Everything is political now. Let blue domains solve their own problems. No relief, no bailouts. Eff them ALL.

I can't say this about Vic's bulbs, but I can about the one's I've bought: No, a conservative firm who hates the CFL mandate did, by picking up a light-meter (okay, I know there's a more technical term, I don't care) and comparing the two readings.
That firm is called: My Household.
CFL bulbs don't (universally) suck anymore. That doesn't make the law any less of a POS, but the bulbs I've bought anything resembling recently (sometime in 2011) have been just fine.

Of all the things we have to worry about, CFL bulbs are so far down on my list they don't even register, quite frankly. Again, no fan of the law, but my problem there is the reduction of Liberty, not any problem with the CFLs.

CFL do not last as long as claimed.
CFL's provide 40% less light than claimed.
CFL's put out 20-30% less light as they get older.
CFL's are 400x more expensive than the incandescent equivelent.
CFL's contain deadly mercury.
But remember they have the best of intentions.

I hate CFLs. They hum, don't light quickly, are a haz mat situation if they break and reported give off dangerous emmissions if the coating is not thick enough.
LED lights are kind of interesting. They're more expensive than incandescant but don't seem to have any of the negatives of the CFLs...
And yes, incandescants give off heat, nice in the winter, not so nice in the summer.

One of my pet peeves is the current usage of "poor" to mean "impoverished" or "out of money." "Poor" is a class distinction, when applied to wealth. It presumes that someone who currently has little or no money will always have little or no money.
That should be the exact opposite of our expectations, as a rule.

The plural of anecdote is note "data." But, yes, it sucks when that happens. It's happened to me a couple of times, but not since 2009, at the latest. Our most recently purchased CFLs were nearly 2 years ago, and that was simply because they were on an insane sale, so we bought a couple of boxes.
We gave one of those boxes away, and we still have only used two or three of the first box (I think there were 10 in a box).
On the other hand, it sucks almost as much (if not quite so expensively) when I buy a standard bulb and it burns out the first time I turn it on. Which has happened to me about as often (percentage wise) as buying a CFL only to have it burn out in less than 6 months.

I'm not waiting. It's like people think one has to hate the object (in this case: CFL bulbs) to hate the law. No, I think the law is terrible and that Rep Upton should go DIAF. (I would then attempt to console his daughter. Out of respect and sympathy, of course). But my problem is the loss of liberty. I would have the exact same problem if CFL bulbs were banned and only incandescents were allowed.

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Thanks for the news, Gabe and Vic, even though there’s nothing worth thanking you for. I tell you, pulling a Somewhere In Time is sounding better and better each day this country staggers to its deathbed.
Oh, well. Time to settle down into the new year here at AoS. Got to buff out the stompy marks of AtCÂ’s boots, open the windows to get the musky fug of Calvin KleinÂ’s Passion for Ewoks out of the air and haul the carpets stained with God only knows what out to the landfill. So while weÂ’re housekeeping, hereÂ’s a couple of stories:
Yesterday I told a couple of Hollywood drinking stories. I’d forgotten one – I think it was a Peter O’Toole story, but I can’t be bothered to check right now – but we’ll say O’Toole was found lying on the ground. “Is something wrong?” a passing policeman asked. “The world is spinning,” replied O’Toole. “So what are you doing there?” “Waiting for my house to come by.”
Last week in 1895 was the anniversary of the first public exhibition of motion pictures by the Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis. Yes, Edison (along with his employees and future rival W.K.L. Dickson) had invented movies and shown them prior to that time, but only as single-viewer kinescopes; he didn’t think there was a market for showing films to one big audience instead of to single people. Among the Lumière films shown that night, was The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotât Station. Legend has it that the audience feared the train might actually crash through the screen and so ran out screaming, but I don’t think our ancestors were quite that ignorant. They might have been startled, like we are during a particularly intense moment watching a suspense movie, but not frightened to the point of running away.
Still, the legend made for good jokes; there’s the one about the hayseed from Podunk in a nickelodeon for the first time. One of the shorts he watched showed a group of buxom maidens stripping down to swim in a pond next to a set of train tracks. Just as they get down to their bloomers and shirtwaists, the train comes by. At the next shot, all the women are in the water, splashing each other in fun. The hick watches the whole program over and over through the day. Finally, as the place closes up for the night, he storms up to the nickelodeon’s owner and demands his money back. “What’s wrong, old timer?” the owner asks. “You were here all day. Didn’t you like watching those flickers?”
“It ain’t that,” our corn-fed hero storms. “It’s jest that I been watchin’ those ladies swimmin’ all day, and that gol-durn train ain’t been late once!”
And, of course, the joke about a famous dramatic actor who saw himself on screen for the first time and marveled about it to a critic: “It was the most extraordinary experience I ever went through – to actually see myself acting!”
The critic nodded. “Now you understand what we have to put up with.”
And finally, a story about Sir Cedric Hardwicke, whom you’ll remember as the Pharaoh Seti in The Ten Commandments. One bawdy recollection is that, though Sir Cedric’s spirit was willing in matters of lubricity, his flesh was weak, leading to the nickname “Sir Seldom Hardpricke.” But that’s not my story. My story takes place on the MGM lot in 1943, during the filming of The Cross of Lorraine, where Hardwick played a provincial priest helping the French Resistance.
One day, Hardwicke and director Tay Garnett were on their way to lunch when they passed a stage where Tommy DorseyÂ’s band was rehearsing for a musical. A group had gathered in front of the open doors to listen, and the two joined them. After a few minutes, Tay reminded the actor that they only had an hour for lunch, so they turned to go. As they did, Hardwicke, who was dressed in full clerical robes, ran smack into Greer Garson, who was on the lot shooting Mrs. Miniver.
Garson, seeing only the robes, lowered her eyes and apologized. “I’m so sorry, Father.” Hardwicke, deadpan, blessed her. Then, with Dorsey’s band swinging to the skies, he launched into an outrageous bump-and-grind, shocking everyone around him. When Garson finally recognized the “priest,” she fell into his arms, laughing, and the three went off together for lunch. But forever afterward, whenever and wherever Hardwicke met the flame-haired Garson, he would solemnly mutter, “Bless you, my daughter.”
And thatÂ’s it for me. Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Again and again Romney and Ryan outright stipulated that Obama inherited a tough situation.
In the last debate especially, Romney was a nodding in agreement fool with whatever vomited out of Obama's mouth.
How do you make a case for people electing you if you agree with your opponents main premise?

You can tell the truth about Obama easy as pie, we do it here on this blog, conservative commentator have been doing it for years.
The people we select to lead us are the ones who will not.
Do you think Newt Gingrich or a Rand Paul would not have dessimated Obama in a debate even with a Obama friendly moderator?

The answer, as you well know, in two words: Im. Possible.
The days of any Real Conservative (or a Mainstream White Man) being president are over.
So far as I can see, there isn't a single person in the so-called conservative movement who is worth voting for. Rand Paul? Paul Ryan? Darrell Issa? Booby Jindal? Never.
Unless we are down with being totally and forever marginalized by the Free Shit Posse, we'll have to find someone who is not tainted by the stain of politics to run when Choom Boy finally decides he's tired of presidentin'.
Leave the Republican Party to lackwits like Malor, Drew M., Poppin' Fresh and Our Miss Brooks. As long as they choose to play footsie with the liberals, they are of no value to anyone who cares what's going on.
What we need are people who will actually ACT, not pontificate, people who will go to the mat for what's right and, when necessary, play just as dirty as the liberals do. Right now, there aren't any politicians who actually have a pair; the current crop can be too easily bought off by Shiny Stuff and squirrels.

I was chatting a little bit about this on last night's ONT. We've got to move away from doing things in our daily lives that 'normalizes' bad behavior in DC. For instance, avoiding debt to pay for lifestyle. By changing our attitudes on debt, we can nudge the closer away from voting for politicians who promise a debt-fueled government.

Infiltrate the apparatus. Register as a Democrat. Gather evidence. Bide time.
This is the problem with the Veritas approach - it only nibbles on the exposed edges, its not taking the time to burrow deep into the mechanism.
Of course, this takes time. I expect to be working on my infiltration for several years to pull it off without raising any suspicion and keeping myself safe in the process.

What the fiasco of the "fiscal cliff negotiations" should have made clear to everyone by now is that that The GOP will move Heaven-and-Earth and sell-out, literally, everything if necessary to avoid actually having to cut spending.
That's right - I wrote "The GOP".
Let that sink-in for a minute or two, GOP apologists.
Posted by: DocJ at January 02, 2013 04:41 AM (A5uiv)
So, in a way, Gabe is right. The Republicans did the politic thing- the ones who voted "no" are people who couldn't survive a "Yes" vote. The ones who voted "Yes" can go say, "See? I SAVED!!!! you from terrible tax hikes!"
If the point were to keep as many Republicans in office as possible, that would be great.
Where it breaks down is here: the point isn't actually just to keep as many Republicans in office as possible. The point is to address the fiscal disaster we're facing. Instead, it got kicked down the road again.

I tried the curly bulbs a few years back. Thinking they were better because they use less electricity, I put a few in the lamps in the family and living room. After a month, we were back to the 3 way incandescent ones. Trying to read with the curly bulbs is a bitch. Especially if you are older.
I have about 15 of the curlys left. Only are used for the 2 lights we keep on timers. That's about all they're good for.
I hate the swirly bulbs. Always have, even before I learned they were politically correct. Unfortunately, my husband loves them and keeps buying them. I simply avoid turning on a lot of lights. I prefer dim light in the evenings and the swirly bulbs hurt my eyes.

I'm fine with that.
If what the majority of the American People really want are the policies which will lead to complete collapse, then do it. This death by inches is far worse.
That also, however, assumes that people won't vote for actual fiscal conservatism. And before you say "they didn't," when was the last time they saw it from national Republicans? Not in the last 18 years at least.
It's easy to talk the conservative talk, it's not so easy to walk the conservative walk. But, in those places where Republicans are doing both, they're turning Blue States Red. I point you to Wisconsin and Michigan. Both voted for TFG, but kept Republican majorities within their own States.

I don't see how anyone can construe repub's vote for the extensions to be a sell-out. Its not like they had any control, tax rates were going up without affirmative action and it was obvious that they would get the blame for tax rates rising "on the middle class". (As an aside, repubs shoudl eshue "class" talk unless its to decry class warfare.) They deserve congrats for getting social security funding back in place and getting the base from $250 k to $450 k, and lowering the damage to cap gains and death tax. Anything except total victory for Obama was a positive. All tax rates would rise if they killed it and their bargaining position would be worse when even worse panic set in. Plus the tax increases are chicken feed compared to potential spending cuts.
Now the debt ceiling and budget is another matter and neither gets passed again without affirmative votes by republicans. Left alone, nothing gets spent. This is the hill to fight on and changing the subject from taxes (where they had their heads handed to them) is better ground to fight on. Pass the 2007 budget with appropriate cuts to some federal depts and and appropriate increases to medicare. Nothing gets spents without dems agreeing, a situation republicans should find more comfortable than the dems will. And this time for fk's sake, make sure the democrat doesn't get credit for balancing the budget.

All Democrats, as an article of faith, want to cut Defense spending before anything else gets cut. Come sequestration, now virtually guaranteed to happen, That'll be a "check" too.
Obama and his merry band of crazies in the Democrat leadership have now shot all their bullets. The only thing left, when deficits grow and not shrink (thank to the aformentioned Democrat economic policies) is spending reductions in entitlements.
