— Gabriel Malor Happy Wednesday.
Kurt Schlichter writes over at Breitbart that conservatives ignore Lena Dunham's 'Girls' at their own peril. His point is a good one: you can't retake culture if you can't discuss it. My related point: even if conservatives don't like current state of culture, setting ourselves up as nothing other than unengaged critics is unlikely to win any friends (or voters). We don't have to like Hollywood, but we should recognize that most other people do and they're not going to be very receptive to conservatives or conservative ideas if all they hear from conservatives is knee-jerk opposition. This is the second time this issue has come up in the context of 'Girls' and both Ace's and NakedDC's takes on the 'Nazi Republican' issue illustrate it well. It's okay to come at these things sideways.
Washington Post says the sequester cuts are probably going to happen and that's making Sen. Graham a sad panda. I'm down with it.
If you didn't get to hear Sen. Rubio on Rush Limbaugh yesterday, here's the transcript. El Rushbo was much less critical of the proposed bipartisan plan than he was the day before.

If engaging the culture requires that I watch awful TV programming, well the culture can go die in a fire.

Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Sorry to be late. Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe, and here’s a prayer for Vic and Mrs Vic as she goes to the doctor today. Let’s have a happy story – let’s talk about another of my favorite movies, Stanley Kramer’s 1963 epic It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
The shoot – over 160 days - took place in various California locations, from Cathedral City (where Smiler Grogan kicked the bucket), to Palm Desert, Yucca Valley, San Fernando, Long Beach, San Pedro. . .and the list goes on.
One location, near Palm Springs, was on the property of composer Jimmy Van Huesen, who, with lyricist Sammy Cahn, wrote many of Frank Sinatra’s best songs - the Ray and Irwin gas station (“Service with a Big, Broad Smile!”). The station was a specially constructed set, which Van Heusen first saw on his weekly drive from LA to his Palm Springs house. Now, you or I might stop and wonder about it if a gas station suddenly appeared on our property, but Van Heusen drove right on; he figured his business manager had leased the property to a real service station.
That weekend, Kramer shot the scenes involving the station; first, when Milton Berle, Ethel Merman and Dorothy Provine try to rent the stationÂ’s tow truck, and then, the fight between Jonathan Winters, Marvin Kaplan and Arnold Stang which turns the station into a pile of rubble. The shooting complete, Kramer and crew packed up, just before Van Heusen drove by again, on his trip back to LA. When the composer saw the wreck, he whipped his car around and drove back to Palm Springs, frantically calling his manager; he figured some terrible accident had happened to the station over the weekend and was deathly afraid he might be sued!
If you watch the fight, youÂ’ll see that StangÂ’s left wrist is held limply inside a thick glove; it turns out the actor had broken it earlier and the glove was being used to hide his cast. Surprisingly, for a film containing such mayhem, only Stang and Phil Silvers (who pulled a groin muscle)* were injured during the shoot.
There was one close call with death, however. Stunt flyer Frank Tallman was directed to fly Tyler Fitzgerald’s (Jim Backus) twin-engine Beechcraft D-18 through a Coca-Cola advertising sign. A fake sign was set up for practice, made of Styrofoam and balsa wood, and Tallman flew through it several times a day for three weeks, in order to get the speed and angle correct. When the time came for filming, however, the paper sign reading “The Pause That Refreshes” had been replaced – no one ever admitted who did it – by linen. When Tallman flew through the sign at over 160 mph, the resistance killed the right engine, shattered the cockpit windshield and tore back the leading edges of both wings. Tallman said it was the closest he’d ever come to dying, and he refused to ever perform a similar stunt again.
One last note: many, many more comedians and actors were considered for inclusion in the Mad World cast than ever made it to the final cut, including Stan Laurel, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Red Skelton and Groucho Marx (who was originally offered the role of Mister Marcus, Milton Berle’s father-in-law, but he asked for too much money and the role was recast for Ethel Merman). You remember one of the funniest cameos in the movie, when Dingy Bell (Mickey Rooney) and Benjy Benjamin (Buddy Hackett) are trying to land at Rancho Conejo Airport – the camera catches a milling crowd and an ambulance preparing for casualties, then slowly pans left to reveal the airport’s firefighters: Larry, Moe and Curly-Joe. Well, there was actually a fourth Stooge set to be in the movie: Joe Besser was to play either Ray or Irwin in the gas station, but his TV producers wouldn’t give him time off to make an appearance.
OK, I lied, one more: there never was such a place as the Santa Rosita Beach State Park, where the Big “W” was. The land was private property on Palos Verdes Drive in Palos Verdes, converted over by United Artists at a cost of $80,000 and left as seen in the movie after shooting wrapped. You can still hike to the beach and look into the large yard, but the palm trees no longer exist, victims to years of neglect. Only one stump of one tree remains. The current owners promise to restore the Big “W” to its full glory, but they’ve also been promising that since the 1980s, so don’t get your hopes up.
And thatÂ’s it for today. Hope you enjoyed that. And donÂ’t forget about my book, The DirectorÂ’s Cut: A Theda Bara Mystery, available on Kindle and from the Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites, or through your local bookstore.
*the injury happened while the cast was chasing Captain Culpeper (Spencer Tracy); watch as the men pursue him up the stairwell of an abandoned building near the end of the film and youÂ’ll notice itÂ’s SilversÂ’ stunt double, keeping his face turned away from the camera, whoÂ’s doing the scene.

You should recognize that you're a sucker.
Despite endless, endlessly repeated, across-the-spectrum all-media hype, from the day of the show's announcement to this morning on this very blog, one third of one percent of Americans watch Girls. All of them chumps.
The illusion of being where the action is--of being the site of Culture, of unity, of moral peril, etc.--is the spectacular illusion.
I mean "spectacular" in the Society of the Spectacle sense. You guys should know that stuff. The "dead object in spectacular contemplation" (e.g., Lena Dunham) is a defensive bulwark of the ruling class (which isn't you), yo. If you look, you lose.

I'm not sure that will ever take hold. Bob Dylan has taken some pretty conservative stands going back to the 60s and either people were too fucking dumb to figure it out or they just chose to ignore it. Electing the JEF twice has given me a pretty jaundiced view of mankind that ultimately the dumb and lazy fucks will prevail. I'll need some real evidence to the contrary to believe otherwise.

I pointed out on Monday that we need to keep in mind that the GOP can lose this in too ways .. it can pass a bad bill or walk away from a good bill
After listening around, I’m beginning to get the feeling that this “framework” may .. I stress may .. become a fairly decent bill.
IÂ’m also beginning to sense that the Democrats are now trying to convince the GOP that it is a bad bill (since when has David Frum been right about anything). This allows them to show that they care more about Hispanics (but not those Mexicans that Fast and Furious helped get killed) and keep this thorny issue alive that pays dividends for Democrats at the polls.
But I also agree with Sen. Sessions ..."We would be in a much better position to achieve immigration reform if the Obama Administration had spent that last four years enforcing federal law rather than dismantling it. Brave immigration agents have been left with no recourse but to sue their own Department head, simply so that they—like any other law officers—will be allowed to do their jobs. Just last Friday a federal judge made an important preliminary ruling in their favor. The ICE union also held their own agency head, John Morton, in no confidence with a unanimous vote. The first task for every media agency in the country ought to be to study this lawsuit, to listen to the long-documented complaints of ICE agents, and to review the record of stymied attempts at congressional oversight of DHS."
Our Dear Leader would be just as happy to kick this can down the road because the status quo works for him right now, so he has no problem using immigration as a weapon for his personal political fetishes.
So far this is merely a “framework” not a bill. I suggest that we find out what it really is before forming a judgement, and yes, stay skeptical.

Had dinner with my daughter and her hubby last night. We were talking about TV shows. The wife and I are catching up on The Walking Dead (almost done with season 2 - Netflix is wunnerful!)
Anyway.. We were suggesting shows to each other and my daughter mentioned Girls.. but added "You may not like that one.." ya think? I have HBO and Showtime and I had never even heard of it until it won some awards recently!
I have never considered cable shows to be indicative of anything.. HBO did that Sarah Palin movie and it also got all kinds of awards.. I don't know one person who watched it.
Broadcast TV shows - that actually try to sell you stuff through commercials - are probably a lot better barometer for pop culture.. but we're still doomed.

1. Agree we should engage on some of the culture. I suggest not this show, which requires spending actual money to watch. Also, it's only talked about in the press because it's "edgy." Much better to start in by forcing oneself to watch and seriously critique Beyonce's Super Bowl half time. You could probably go to the trouble to watch "Girls" and then discover brining it up at the water cooler would only get you labeled more of a weirdo.
2. Sven, sirens were probably tornado warning downin Batholomew County and Edinburgh. The tornado warning went off when I had the radio on last night.

Hey you think Giggles will let say Mary Landrieu start pushing hard for a flat tax, reduction of the corporate tax, more offshore drilling, and the Keystone Pipeline since all those things are popular as hell in Louisiana and the nation at large and would help empower the GOP's base?
If Giggles is smarter than we are politically on his control of his caucus we're doing something wrong.

OK. So I'll watch some TV shows about vapid skanks, so if anyone ever asks me what I think about TV shows with vapid skanks I can take about TV shows with vapid skanks...what does that change? How does that move "culture" away from vapid skanks and into something deeper and more meaningful?
It doesn't. It just makes me as shallow as the people who prefer to watch TV shows about vapid skanks.

Who's talking about deportation?
Nobody except liberals and RINOs who use it as a cudgel against people who are not down with another round of amnesty with now enforcement.
Illegals status is their own doing.
All you do is make it impossible to operate in country and they will self deport.
And another thing I would love to know is when did it become the responsibility of the US to take in Mexico's surplus population?
It's a pretty sweet deal for Mexico I have to tell you.
They send millions upon million of surplus people north, these people then send money back to Mexico.
SWEET MOTHERFUCKING DEAL!

I'm not anti-immigrant, I am anti illegal immigrant.
Jedi hand waving away the fact that under their own laws they are felons by their very illegal presence here changes nothing.
Ba-Rahn-Ko is fixing the economy so that the only folk wanting to come here are hammock dwellers and refugees.
I'll start angsting over the "plight of the Mexopolitans" when the donkey party starts exerting pressure on mexopolis to take down the berlin wall on their southern border.
There is ONLY one nation on Earth expected to play this game and only one side of the aisle expected to let its enemy get reinforcements every 8-16 years.
so the dumbest nation on the Earth on immigration has us the dumbest party on earth as Charlie brown to Schuck Shumer's lucy van pelt.

I have not savaged Rubio as anything other than either a naive idiot or a person who is lying to us.
That would be because those are the "choices."
Maybe if Rubio kept himself contained on wagging his tail and saying..."COME ON GUYS I KNOW THEY WON'T FUCK YOU THIS TIME! I CAN FEEL IT!"
he wouldn't be getting the heat he is?
Do you understand how pissed off a lot of us are that the GOP leadership felt that:
1) negotiating on this behind closed doors for 4 years was "a great idea"
2) that John fucking McCain who can't get his mouth of Zombie Ted kennedy's co*k is front and center
3) they launch into this bullshit rather than using the early stage of the game to lay the groundwork for an endless barrage of "where's you fucking budget harry?"
The GOP needed this chat like it needed a hole in the head....
Let Ogabe bring it up and remind everyone he is a fucking retard who is blocking this.
If the GOP takes more than one step forward without HARD action on the border it is finished.
I'd rather have INS abolished and the US declared an open city than this targeted Democrat voter recruiting effort going on in 2027 again when they really do outnumber us forever.

It's not, or at least not simply, a matter of not wanting to go outside the conservative bubble. It's about not wanting to go outside it for crap. There's stuff on HBO and AMC and other networks that's not strictly speaking our message, that's in some cases really not our message, that's nonetheless good art, entertaining, and that in least some cases provides food for thought and discussion of our message. I'm supposed to care about "Girls" instead of that stuff? Life's too short.
And "Lena doesn't think Republicans are like Nazis, Hannah does" might fly a little bit better if Lena had never done "Your First Time". There's a certain point where Lena is Hannah is Lena. Trying to tell the difference is like trying to tell the difference between Aaron and Roy in "Primal Fear". You'll get the same answer either way, and for the same reason. It's like saying that Aaron Sorkin or Rod Lurie don't really think liberals are good people and conservatives are evil bastards. So it's just a coincidence that it works out that way in their movies/shows? Really?
