— Gabriel Malor Happy Wednesday.
If you, like me, were disgusted by ex-FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey's decision to give execrable troll-site Media Matters an interview dishing on FreedomWorks, you'll be relieved, or something, to hear that Dick Armey didn't even realize he was talking to Media Matters even though the interviewer clearly identified himself. Armey thought he was talking to the Media Research Center. This, to me, sounds like an admission that it's time to retire.
Democrats are still freaking out over the notion that if you raise the cost of labor, you get less of it. I haven't eaten at Wendy's before, but I could be persuaded.
Business Insider's Joe Weisenthal has a provocative column on the platinum coin trick. I spent a good chunk of yesterday explaining on Twitter that although the coin trick is a stupid, bad idea, it isn't illegal, nor is it unconstitutional, as some have argued. Quite simply, if Congress can delegate authority to Treasury to print $20 bills, it can delegate authority to mint a platinum proof coin. (And, in fact, it did in 31 U.S.C. sec. 5112.)

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Am I getting in before Vic’s daily briefing?
Today's story comes to you courtesy of OSP, who was indulging in a little rumination of the carnal crimes he would commit on the lush body of Anna Kournikova. It reminded me of a story about the great John Barrymore. Unfortunately, IÂ’ve got so many books and papers that I couldn't find the primary source material like names and dates, so you'll have to bear with me if I make up a few details:
It seems that, sometime in the 1940s, during a break in his radio show, Barrymore was approached by a woman, her son in tow. "Mr. Barrymore," she said, "My son wants to be an actor, like you. Do you think you could give him any advice?"
Barrymore looked at the boy, who was very obviously uncomfortable about being paraded in front of The Great Profile. Having had encounters with stage mothers before, however, he knew what to do. "Sit down, my boy," he smiled, draping an arm around the boy. "Let me tell you a story.
"Many years ago, I was touring up and down the East coast. Well, when I got to New Orleans, I met up with an old friend of mine, who invited me to dinner. It turned out that he had bought out a madam many years back and was now the owner of a whorehouse, and he invited me to stay with him." As the horrified mother's face went white, Barrymore went on. "I ended up staying there after my tour had ended. It was the most wonderful month in my life – wonderful music, the best food and wines and an orgy every night. Ah, but then," he winked to the mother, "I was offered a part on Broadway."
Mother sighed in relief, thinking that Barrymore would finally talk about the glory of the stage.
But no. "My last night," the actor went on, "the whores threw me a farewell party. It was me and my pal and every girl we could have, for as long as we could have them. Finally, at about three in the morning, while the girls were were resting, my pal turned to me and said, 'John, why are you going? All that will happen is that you'll be in a show for a few months, then you'll be out of work again. Why don't you stay here? I'll find you a madam and a house and you can run it and fuck these girls for the rest of your life.' "Well, with such an offer, what could I do?”
Mother was white again, but the boy was hanging on to Barrymore's every word. With the trained grace of a true star, Barrymore looked off into the distance, remembering those long-ago days. Then, his jawline firm, he tightened his grip on the boy's shoulders and looked straight into his eyes. "But I told myself I knew better. I knew I was destined for a life on the stage. I left for Broadway and never looked back.”
“Thank you, Mr. Barrymore,” Mother sputtered, reaching for her son. But Barrymore held up a hand to stop her. “But the more I think about where I’ve been and what I've done with my life, I realize I should never have turned the offer down. So, my boy," he finished, giving the would-be actor a hearty handshake, "I advise you to forget about acting. Find yourself a whorehouse and never leave."
And now, I hope youÂ’ll forgive me if I imitate OSP a bit. I donÂ’t feel like changing my nic, but IÂ’ll encourage you to click on it to see my website and buy my book, The DirectorÂ’s Cut: A Theda Bara Mystery, available on Amazon, B&N and Kindle.
Have a wonderful day.

By 1 trillion dollars.
Spending will have to be reduced by default.
You lower the debt ceiling by 500 million dollars every year after that forcing more spending reductions and belt tightening.
The US has more than enough money to operate the government and meet it's mandatory spending and debt servicing.
The President and the Donks will cry but so what let them.
At some point we have to fight - Let this be the hill our side finally dies upon.

How is the Joe Wiesenthal article "provocative?" OK, sure, most people don't understand what Fiat currency is - that's because they are uneducated louts, and not because it's an unfathomable mystery.
Here's the one thing that Joe misses: if money isn't tied, in some way, to production... then, unless the economy is at a standstill, it inflates.
That's the "debase" argument he mentioned.
Governments do not create STABLE, or USABLE money out of thin air. Friedman won the Nobel Prize, back when it meant something, precisely on this point. Sure, they can create Weimar-money, where a wheelbarrow full of million-dollar notes will be needed to buy a loaf of bread - but that's hardly "money."

The closest DQ to me is about 30-odd minutes away. I can honestly say I've never eaten at one. I've had the ice cream, but never liked the soft-serve stuff, so didn't bother with the food. Now, for my money, the finest burger I ever had in my life was the Number 4 regular at York Steak House (of blessed memory). 109 "Here's what I don't get-- if the gov't can fund itself by minting trillion dollar Coins of Power (One Coin to Rule Them All), why at the same time are the Progressive Lefties demanding taxes go up on the rich?"
I had posed a similar question on a liberal website some time ago. The scenario was that the U.S. discovered a new mineral (unobtanium) that every other country wanted - so much so that the sales paid for all the expenses of the government.
I asked if that was the case, would the liberals agree that no one should be taxed. Everyone who replied disagreed. They said it was a matter of fairness that the wealthy be taxed even if the money wasn't needed.

Do you have an supermarket chain named Aldi's near you.
.99 eggs
$1.99 butter
$1.40 qt half and half
.89 bread
$1.49 grape tomatoes
.49 cucumbers
Stores are small by our standards, and bring your own shopping bags.
But the quality is not bad at all for many of the weekly staples that we get.

Well, my undergraduate academic training is in economics.
The thing about economists is that they, like lawyers, have to always guard against going down the rabbit hole. Models and things tend to take on lives of their own, and it's very easy to forget that they are grounded on theoretical assumptions. Some of those assumptions are valid, but all too often economists start conclusion-seeking and either ignore assumptions that make that conclusion impossible or create new assumptions to get the result they want.
The article Gabe linked about The Coin is a good example. It's showing at least one economist (Krugman) forgetting or entirely ignoring what he knows in favor of a chimera. Charts are shown without any context - for example, a chart showing low interest rates and high debt as a way to refute the theory that increased borrowing raises interest rates...never mind that the Fed is playing against interest rates by increasing the money supply and keeping the discount rate low. Yes, when supply is high prices tend to stay low (supply and demand, right...?).
But assumptions are going to crash against the hard shoals of reality, as illustrated in the Reducto Ad Absurdum of "if money is whatever we want it to be, then why are we paying taxes to fund government?" The harsh reality is that you CANNOT have money in an economy unless the economy is actually producing something, and the "money" (whatever you use, whether it be gold, pieces of paper, or tea leaves) must at the end of the day have the exact same perceived value as all the goods and services produced by the economy. So while Keynes said that money is our creation, by that he meant that it is a unit of measurement. Increase the money supply by 7% and the unit of measurement is decremented by 7%.
Kind of like how something remains the same length even if you redefine a foot to be two feet.

BUT politicians have little self control and will buy votes with the "fiat money", as they have already done in the form of debt. Gold was the discipline, and the fed reserve chairman. But gold was removed and the Fed chairman is now doing quantitative easing. Precious metals or even bullets (or any asset I guess) is "real money". Our currency (paper, coinage, or electronic) needs to be stable, but is instead now fiat.
Even with the miracle coin, spending bills and funding should go through the House. The bond vigilantes aren't a gang of Charles Bronsons out to do good when government fails. They are just the market, that will sell bonds if they feel the US government is going to devalue its currency at twice the rate their bonds are paying. This will drive them to buy assets .. hence inflation.
A commodity based currency would fix this desire of government to buy humans via an array of "entitlement for votes" schemes like we have now. We laugh at the $10 million Zimbabwe note, yet are now considering our $ trillion coin.
If our government can essentially buy every person's labor or put them on welfare with this "funny money", what happens to the private sector? This is why we must have the discipline of a gold backed (or some commodity) currency.
But to pay our coming debt may require pawning off some trillion dollar coins to pay the Chinese and others, and let them figure out how to make change from it.
And maybe we could forget the income tax and just start minting the coins, which would in essence "tax" everyone with assets equally, even the drug dealers. But we still have to reward work, rather than let politicians pick winners and punish capitalists.
But Vic or Monty would have a more comprehensive understanding (I hope).

I've said it before, but I blame a lot of our current situation on that disgusting Seinfeld program.
Gah, i HATED Seinfeld. I've never, ever understood why it was popular. A more unlikeable group of people I cannot imagine outside of a Code Pink rally.
That said, i don't BLAME Seinfeld for what the country's become. Rather, I think Seinfeld -- and other self-absorbed, oh-so-trendy shows of a similar ilk -- are a reflection of what society has become. "Seinfeld," in its day, was something new and different in that it portrayed a group of people who were similar to its target audience. They weren't blue collar schlubs like "Roseanne" (another show I hate, btw, though the first few seasons were pretty good), or white collar suburbanites like "Bob Newhart" or sophisticates like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," or any typical sitcom family like you'd get on ABC's TGIF. The characters on "Seinfeld" were a bunch of neurotic, selfish, poorly adjusted social retards with less empathy than a bull shark.
"Ah," thought the viewing audience. "These are people like ME!"
(Or, if you were like me: "Oh good grief, a show about THESE people.")

Their answer? Boycott the company. Which, if successful, means that those very folks they're all concerned about will maybe get less hours or laid off.
How's that for Demothief thinking?
On a similar note but opposite:
To all those who are up in arms about the folks who receive "entitlements"; most of them can't/don't put the money away so it's not like they're getting rich off the taxpayers.
It's a bigger more widespread redistribution scheme.
Most all of those who receive SS or welfare, whether you agree with their purchases, spend that money with local and national vendors and companies.
That money is spread out over a lot of people and it does keep the economy churning. That's not to say it's a good thing or that folks earning their way isn't a better way to go, it's just that it's not a complete ripoff.
I think the major disagreement is with who and under what conditions the beneficiaries are and how much of taxpayers money is used by government for the programs.
Please note. SS and welfare are convenient targets. How about some outrage about the RD money and outright welfare sent to BigPharma and BigAgri? Or many other programs that benefit local areas through the connivance and collusion of their/your representatives in Congress.
There's something like 600 billion in OTHER MANDATORY SPENDING that no one seems to talk about and that isn't part of the SS/Medicare slice or the Defense slice.
That's why EVERYTHING has to be on the table when talking cuts and when talking about redistribution because that's all government really does for the most part; take your money and "redistribute" it where they think it should go.
Plus before cutting anyone's benefit one has to consider the economic situation; where will they get a job? Even burger flipping jobs are hard to find/secure as there's so many applicants.
Just some realities for you all to mull on.

So let me get this straight.
In the Weisenthal article, he quotes Keynes as God (typically I suppose) provides some statistics that focus on the US alone, and a lot of hand waiving.
We are called to ignore the comments of other (equally great) thinkers like Friedman, who by his own admission spent his career attempting to "undo" Keynes damage because...well...he doesn't give a reason.
There are perfectly logical counter-arguments to Weisenthal's statements that I wish he'd address. (Don't they teach this crap in journalism school? You're supposed to fully engage the critiques of your opponents so as to preemptly shut them down, not just handwave and gloss over their arugments dismissively.)
We've discussed them all before, but just to recap. 1) Inflation has a (admittedly unknown) lag time. Even Friedman suggested that slowly growing the monetary supply might not result in dangerous inflation over the long term. But we stopped slowly growing the supply in about 2009. It's arguable that inflation may not have set in yet because the economy has not actually rebounded, keeping much of the money supply on the side-lines (plus the effects of Dodd-Frank are preventing banks from lending so giving the created money to the banks doesn't actualy increase the supply.)
2) Why focus on the US Weisenthal? It hasn't worked out well in several other countries, you best be telling what makes us different enough that we're immune to these forces (not just resistant).
3) On interest rates: We'll there's a tricky thing here, where the fed artificially keeps rates low by buying our government bonds. Also China currently has a vested interest in keeping our rates low, so merely the fact that they haven't gone up yet is not proof that they won't go up.
4) I'm sure I'm missing something else.

As he (or she) should, the way the policy is currently written. The RFID tag is used (and can only be used) to track ingress and egress from the school premises (I don't know if they have a reader on external facilities such as the Field House or other such things). As such, since the only thing you have to do not to be "tracked" is take the stupid thing off when you leave (if you're really paranoid, take some aluminum foil and fold it into a "wallet" for the tag), the school is not (is not even capable) of invading your privacy.
It's no different from having metal detectors at the doors, a strict dress code (or even a school uniform), or having to sign in/out of school. All things other public schools do all over the place.
This kid (and their family) wanted to "make a point," and instead were made into an example.
Now, if that policy changes, or the tags become something other than basic RFID tags, that would be a different situation. As it is? I just can't get riled.

it does but the key is you use it to act as a coagulating agent.
The borax if added at the correct interval near use acts as a released oxidizer increasing the burn temperature.

I don't tend to dismiss Keynes just because he's Keynes (I think his monetary policy theories tend to be defensible, at least in a perfect world...), but he does have an overreliance on the concept of a general price level. It's that overreliance that's making Weisenthal look at a general inflation rate, seeing that it's "low," and figuring everything is hunky dory. Thing is, the inflation rate is calculated based on a basket of goods that are in and of themselves susceptible to conclusion-seeking.
Inflation actually hits many things differently. Using the inflation rate as Weisenthal does assumes that if you can't buy as much of Good X as before, you'll buy more of Good Y and it will all even out. But real people don't behave that way. If I can't buy as much gasoline as I could in December, that doesn't mean I'll buy more bread.

When I use "Keynes" dismissively, it's a shorthand for the 90 million arguments about why it doesn't work in this world (which is not perfect.)
Furthermore, it's shorthand for people who rely on it as Gospel. Keynes has positive short term effects (and perhaps medium and long term to an extent.) but it's longer term effects are certainly at best..awkward, a bit unknowable, and possibly bad.
But most modern (neo?) Keynesians only look at those near term effects (we can stimulate an economy YAY!)
Also not a fan of the fact they he felt government was the only way to accomplish it.
But that reminds me of my point 4. Inflation: You can use various measures of inflation to show any number of things. But here's the basic fact, many of them are bunk. Claiming using the CPI that "inflation is nil!" fails to take into account gains in efficency that offset inflation. (Now it may be true that for your very narrow set of goods inflation is nil, but that means nothing.)
I'd be more interested to see those numbers grafted on to average US salary over that time period. I'm of the mind that it gives a better view of what inflation actually is mostly because people tend to want to keep their current standard of living (and that's what inflation should measure changes in standard of living. So what if I can afford the same amount of beans? I happen to like meat which has gone up X%.) The combined actions of the labor market finding ways to increase salary (education, bargining, job hunting, whatever) provide a greater approximation of true inflation than the CPI, in my humble opinion.

I don't tend to dismiss Keynes just because he's Keynes (I think his monetary policy theories tend to be defensible, at least in a perfect world...),
I don't dismiss him, either, or indeed any other economist, philosopher or other published individual with a shred of credibility (Michael Mann? Not so much). Dismissing out of hand the work of people we don't agree with is what the LEFT does; we on the right are smarter than that.
My problem with Keynes isn't really Keynes at all; it's the left's dependence on him as the Sacred Wellspring of All Economic Fortune. Unlike the right, the left latches on to ONE economic theory -- the one that just happens to conform to their predilection for big government -- and hold onto it like it's the Arc of the Covenant. We can read Keynes and say, "Okay, recommendation X will work in a limited capacity when dealing with situation Y." But the left reads Keynes and says, "Keynes recommends X, so let's apply it to situations 1 thru Z-Omega, inclusive!"
It's just another example of the left's dependence on credentialism. "Keynes was an economist so he knows what he's talking about and YOU don't!"
"But what about all the other economists who disagreed with Keynes, or who at least said that Keynesian economics only worked in limited context?"
"They're idiots because REASONS!"
