October. Eesh.

Conservatives spent the past month claiming they didn't want a government shutdown, although you wouldn't know it to see their antics last night. Of course, these are the same folks who insist Obama should be blamed for the shutdown. They sure make it easy for the GOP to get blamed.

GOP congressfolk are bracing for shutdown fallout. Speaker Boehner has privately warned members that the House majority could be in peril.

Ironically, the Obamacare exchanges are launching despite the shutdown (just as Sen. Coburn said they would). What's more, if the government shutdown wasn't taking up all the space, the front page of every major daily in the country would have had an above-the-fold story on how the Obamacare exchanges aren't actually working as planned because of software and other tech problems.

So the score is: conservatives didn't manage to stop Obamacare. Conservatives are oddly celebrating a shutdown they claimed they did not want. The GOP is getting blamed. Oh, and how are voters looking at this? A new Quinnipiac poll out this morning finds voters opposed 72%–22% to Congress shutting down the fed govt to block implementation of Obamacare.

Brilliant work. And, of course, we still have the eventual GOP surrender to look forward to, wherein the ultimate pointlessness of this strategy is revealed for all to see.

2 I Posted this in the ONT but it deserves some attention here too. amidst the horror of the panda cam going dark at night, Judge Jackson ruled against Holder on Fast & Furious last night decision here http://preview.tinyurl.com/k6ps5zz some juicy excerpts "This opinion does not grapple with the scope of the PresidentÂ’s privilege: it simply rejects the notion that it is an unreviewable privilege when asserted in response to a legislative demand." "The Constitution does not bar the federal judiciary from resolving this dispute between the political branches." "Notwithstanding its previous concession, the Department of Justice now insists that subject matter jurisdiction is lacking. Defendant argues that the fact that there is a specific statute that vests jurisdiction in the District Court for the District of Columbia for actions brought by the Senate to enforce its subpoenas means that in the absence of a parallel statute, this court does not have jurisdiction over an action brought on behalf of the House." "Since for all of the reasons set forth above, neither legal nor prudential considerations support the dismissal of this action, the defendantÂ’s motion to dismiss the action will be denied." Judge Amy Berman Jackson an Obama Appointee has made the Jarrett Enemies List.

25 The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, has been discussing possible legal status for the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. He's also been working with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, a fellow Virginia Republican, on a bill offering citizenship to immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as children.

Reps. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, and Ted Poe, R-Texas, are working on a plan to create a visa program allowing more lower-skilled workers into the country.

Goodlatte and the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas, hold out hopes for floor action by late October on a series of immigration bills that already have passed their committees.

"I would think that would be the next agenda item in the queue after we're done with this mess," McCaul said this past week, referring to bitter divisions over the health law, the level of government spending and the growing federal debt.

The attention of House GOP leaders seems certain to remain squarely focused on the fiscal disputes until they are resolved, leaving immigration on a back burner for some time to come. But lawmakers and outside advocates insist that three months after the Democratic-led Senate passed a sweeping immigration bill, the issue is showing signs of life in the Republican-run House

101 Well, Cruz and the House did make O(Zero) and the Senate Democrats own it all over again. The Stinkbomb from Hell on the citizenry and the overall economy is owned by Democrats and Democrats only. By November 2013 everyone will be poorer and sicker thanks to them. I also don't think that it is irreversible. I think it can be repealed because it is not single payer which is what they are gunning for. The insurance industry who were all for this Stinkbomb from Hell when they thought it would make a captive market of suckers now sees they are the goat. Big Insurance was set up and the mess will be their fault since the Democrats are going to have trouble hanging it on the Republicans. Everything, EVERYTHING O(ZERO) touches turns to merde.

Not true, one of those articles I linked to this morning said that because they went ahead and paid everyone, plus paid overtime for the people who took the place of the people that were sent home, it wound up costing the government even more by the time it was over.

So the shutdown and layoff added to the debt. The only way it would actually save money was if it was a "real shutdown" that effected EVERY department that was not national security and they did not pay anyone.

153 Wow, Gabe. Just wow. 1) Not a SINGLE person that you just linked to is "celebrating" the shutdown, but rather pointing out that the effects of a shutdown are not as devastating as have been suggested. For someone who has insisted all along that a Republicans will be blamed for a shutdown, pointing out that the shutdown isn't DOOM! might be appreciated. 2) Yes, after weeks, if not months, of Republicans publicly saying "we will be blamed for a shutdown" instead of going public with an argument as to why the Democrats were responsible for a shutdown, it's just damned hypocritical to say that conservative messaging will cause the Republicans to be blamed. The establishments have been the ones all along saying "blame the Republicans for a shutdown." 3) the front page of every major daily in the country would have had an above-the-fold story on how the Obamacare exchanges aren't actually working as planned. Yeah, that would have happened, because we all know that the media is a fair and impartial reporter of the news. Alternative headlines that have an actual possibility of arising. A) Obamacare rolls out to grand fanfare B) Republican intransigence causes some people to not have health care C) Rays beat Rangers to get into playoffs. There's no world in which Obamacare's failures were going to get front page above-the-fold coverage.

166 Wow.   Power of the purse.   How does that work?

You want to know why this seems so shocking and appalling and horrifying and beyond the pale?   Because we have moved so far beyond an semblance of operating the Federal government according to actual Constitutional principles that when it does happen it seems EXTREMMEEE!!!11!!!.

This is how it's supposed to work.   This is why the power of the purse exists in the first place.   This is why there are separate bodies of government and checks and balances.   The Constitution was designed to make sure that there can be those standing athwart yelling halt.  In those instances where one Congress has rammed something through, the next Congress can say "Yeah, about that.   Nice law and all but you can't have any money to implement it."   It's about giving citizens, who, after all, are the ones whose wishes are supposed to be represented, a chance to step in and vote in those who will do their level best to get rid of whatever it was.

So, no, I'm not too appalled by this.  This is how it's supposed to be.   Fine, it's not the tactic you would have chosen.   Okay.   Well, this is where we are.   If I've had to suck it up and vote for McCain and then Romney because of the Good of The Party, then those who oppose this need to suck it up and stop whinging about how this isn't the tactic they would have chosen.  Yes, yes, you've made that clear.   Now stfu and stfu and rally behind what the Party, that you claim is ever so important and vital to the promotion of conservative ideas, is doing.   If not?   Well, do not say one single solitary word to me again, ever in the history of ever, about how solemn duty compels that I vote for anyone with an (R) behind that person's name.

Now, while we're at it, can the Senate get around to that whole passing a budget thing?   That would be aces.

Posted by: artisanal 'ette at October 01, 2013 07:36 AM (IXrOn)

Absolutely.  And part of getting past the MFM is to put a chokehold on the natural human tendency to be liked.  For example, Senator Poppins may swap a drink or two with Stephanopoulos, but when (as in the Barky / Romney debate), he brings up a question out of left field, he should fire back on all cylinders - "who the hell paid you to ask that, George?  The question has nothing to do with what we're discussing tonight.  If you want to pretend you're a journalist, then let my opponent answer.  I'll be here when you ask me a question that hasn't been vetted by the DNC."

Too many of the GOP want to be liked, rather than stand up for themselves.  We know CNN is biased, so why treat them as an honest news organization?  Get in their faces at every opportunity, and maybe one or two members of the Borg who haven't been totally assimilated will start to act like real reporters instead of Barky's fluffers.

183 This current showdown is an important reminder to everyone that the Constitution requires that all appropriations originate in the House. This means that no matter what laws exist, the executive is required to ask for money to enforce them at least once every 2 years. Our system is not broken. This is an example of the people's house rightfully exerting its authority. The President over the last few days has sounded like a petulant King, having a tantrum because Parliament won't find some crazy adventure he wants to undertake. People who don't like what they are seeing need to take it up with the founders. Yes, elections do have consequences, but those consequences include a new House of Representatives every two years. People who make the "it's the law of the land" argument want to imbue the President with King-like powers and amend the constitution by proxy to say that once passed Congress must fund all laws until they are repealed. Well, it doesn't work that way. We fought a War of Independence to preserve these powers in the people and our Representatives in the House are going exactly what they are supposed to.

Then they were going to shutdown.

You know what it reminds me of?  The Israeli/Palestinian "negotiation" where the Israelis were willing to give up the West Bank, settlements, etc... only to have Arafat say at the last minute "nope, we  prefer to continue to live in squalor, send suicide bombers into your malls and buses."

I am sick and tired of the "Moderate" GOP telling me I need to compromise, I need to get with the program.  Do what you say!!!

Remember Moderate Dick Lugar?  He lost a primary in Indiana and shit all over the nominee?

How about McCain?  He cannot find enough Network time to castigate the conservatives and suck up to the Democrats.  The only reason I think he is still Republican is that Jimmy Jeffords turned traitor first in 2002.

Who sent the oppo research on Cruz to the networks.  Which Republican?

I'd rather deal with Democrats, at least they are honest in their hatred of conservatives.

278 Just a few weeks shy of his 50th birthday, movie and TV star Rob Schneider has announced that he is switching his lifelong political affiliation from Democrat to Republican. Image: Break.com The man who gave us “Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo,” SNL’s iconic “Rich, the copy repair guy” (think catchphrase comedy – “Makin’ copies!”) and a host of other roles in mostly Adam Sandler produced movies made the announcement to PolitiChick Ann-Marie Murrell. But Schneider didn’t just change parties, he also made a ringing endorsement for California Assemblyman Tim Donnelley’s run for Governor of California. “The state of California is a mess, and the super majority of Democrats is not working. I’ve been a lifelong Democrat and I have to switch over because it no longer serves the people of this great state. The last time I made a movie was seven years ago, and that’s because we’re not being competitive,” he said. Rob Schneider added to his case for less government by talking about the vitamin company that he owns with a friend, “We moved out of the state because of overregulation. It isn’t helping businesses. We’re chasing businesses away.” The newly-minted Republican made note of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s visit that actually pulled businesses out of California and enticed them to come to Texas. Schneider summed up his opening statement by saying, “Another four years of a Democratic administration will be a disaster, as it already has been.” I think Adam Sandler votes R also

The perverse result of this is that all the good people who can actually do something else are heading for the door and have been for about a year now.  So, if you hate government now, imagine what it's going to be like 2-3 years from now when the only people who are left are the ones who are too stupid to do something in the real world.

3. Ok, whatever. If you still won't talk, let's at least say that Congress is subject to the ACA.

4. What? You won't even give us THAT? Fine, then let's at least not raise prices on hearing aids and pacemakers.

5. Seriously, you want poor people to pay MORE for medical devices? Ok, uh, can we have a week to come up with new terms?

6. Really -- you won't even do that? I give up. Fine. You win: Shut it down.

First day after Cruz 1st filibuster, a Democrat claimed that Cruz missed the entire point of Green Ham and Eggs, that kids should try it because they will like it. That misses the opposite point on Dr. Seuss' moral of the story, that green ham is spoiled, and trying rot won't make it any "better" for the trying. It will make you sick, and suffer until your body voids the rot. Just because an authority figure keeps telling you to swallow rot doesn't justify the abuse of power, regardless of the authority's intent; and certainly does not make the rot "good for you".

I know, right

1. Democrats are not doing well in polls (i.e they have a 'slight' lead or some such in three-letter-word media polls which means they're probably behind)
2. Ted Cruz and the Republicans showing spine has and will fire up the base
3. Obama and Reid would not negotiate, this is clear and unambiguous and can be 'sold' to the base without much work

Sorry to hear about that.

The wife is exempted, of course she won't be getting paid until some other date (and our mini-vacation scheduled in 8 days is now in peril as you're apparently not allowed to take time off during a shutdown.)

Nevertheless, I think something dramatic had to happen to swing the balance of power one way or another in Washington.  To be honest, we couldn't persist much longer like this. This may be sufficient to either give us back the senate or we'll lose control of the house.  Either one radically changes the power makeup and chooses the path forward. (Unlike the last election which was "status quo".)

Do you really think that absent the shutdown the news would actually be reporting on the inadequacies of the exchanges? Really? To be honest, that should be standard operating procedure for just about every AtC rant.

Oh my queen.   My girlcrush on you knows no bounds.     May I be you when I grow up?  Because I want to be AWESOME.

404

The way forward is obvious. The president made another redline statement yesterday when he claimed that the VA would be shut down, this agency would be out, that agency would be out, so what the House should do is just pass a clean funding bill for each agency that he mentioned, send each individual bill on to the Senate, and then scream from the rooftops that the funding bills are awaiting approval from the Democratic Senate and the Democratic president.

It would also be worth pointing out that the president is willing to sit down and discuss/compromise with the terrorist state of Iran but won't sit down and talk to his own fellow Americans.

I had to send an email a month or two later asking where it is, there is no number on credit card bill. I got response that it would be sent shortly. Finally in the beginning of September I sent man I that responded to me an email that theyÂ’ve had my $ for almost three months and I want a refund. He responded that he requested it and a date when refund would be processed. Nothing has been credited. I called Friday. They screwed up my flag order & someone elseÂ’s too. I should receive credit yesterday (no) or today. Man will call me when itÂ’s done. They canÂ’t even get a flag order right and they think they can manage our healthcare!

What would it take to point out the damage it will do to our country or for that matter that the friggin constitution requires a budget every year.

That would require a backbone and a brain. So, we are royally screwed. The GOP can go straight to hell.

Gabe acts like the MSM would have been showcasing the failure of the Obamacare exchanges if not for the government shutdown. Instead, we'd have had banner headlines about how Americans could now purchase health insurance policies which had prices LOWER THAN PREDICTED and how millions of PREVIOUSLY UNINSURED Americans would now get top quality healthcare, thanks to the tireless work of one Barry Obama. Sure, the MSM would have noted that there were a few "glitches" in the workings of the exchanges, but that fact would have been buried deep in the stories, and dismissed as inconsequential. The main thrust of all the MSM coverage would have been that Obamacare is finally here, and it's great!

527 It seems like just yesterday...

We had a fully functioning, gentle, all-knowing and all-caring government helmed by the greatest human being to ever walk the face of the planet. Even greater than Jebus. I personally witnessed the man cure over nine thousand children of cancer by touching them on the forehead. Everyone was taken care of, and nobody wanted for anything. Sunshine glistened every day off the morning dew, as the Skittles shitting unicorn blazed across the rainbows in the sky, bringing joy to all.

Then the Republicans attacked.

Led by the demons Boehner and Cruz, they destroyed it all. Within minutes of THE END OF ALL GOVERNMENT™, people were dying in the streets from lack of social security payments and free health coverage. Grandma died on the spot. Giant SUV's rolled into the cities and ate all the Smartcars and Volts, dooming our atmosphere to bleed off, like Mars'. All the solar panels morphed into coal plants without carbon caps. The resulting acid rain melted the Skittles unicorn as the children looked on, their own eyes boiling out from the toxic sludge falling from the sky. The Delta Smelt immediately went extinct. Guam capsized and sank into the sea; a real modern day Atlantis. The pandas ate the PandaCam. AR-15's grew legs and started walking around, shooting people at random.

There were even people eating what food they wanted, walking down the streets drinking Big Gulps and eating a Big Mac! The horror! The horror!

Really, the key here is making sure all of the weak kneed Republicans stay in line for seven days. The weak point in the Democratic strategy is that a federal shutdown/slowdown has essentially no effect on business as usual. This is why the government closes down all of the highly visible parks and monuments, because they need people thinking that this is a disaster. In order to win this the Democrats and their media accomplices have to create the perception of pain and they have to get the squishes to cave quickly, because the longer this goes on the more obvious it becomes to everyone that there is no actual pain, and when that happens the Democrats lose their leverage.

Additionally, the longer this goes on the more people see the actual impact of Obamacare in the form of rising premiums, and if the Republicans were smart they'd be out there telling people to look at what their insurance is going to cost next year and asking them which party is trying to stick it to them and which party is trying to stop Obamacare in its tracks.

But most importantly, someone must keep the French wing of the Republican party from surrendering.

Well at least that's what I'm hoping, it would be nice to have one day where I don't have to wade through that drugged out disease ridden crowd just to go take a piss.

Welfare office opens their doors at 9am and the line to check-in usually stretches out the door first thing in the morning. Just went to the bathroom to vacate my morning pot of coffee, all of three people waiting in the lobby.

Smart deadbeats show up today when there's no line. Those three should try their hands at actual work, but maybe they're smart enough to realize welfare pays better.

550 517 Well, assuming this is the Army post we are talking about, I could completely understand how the military community, from brass to wive's clubs, would be absolutely unable to mitigate it. No alternatives at all. They would break the laws of physics. Of course, it could just be that maybe the post commander just needs to be relieved for not making it happen. I'm going with number two, because if you can't organize baby-sitters, in peacetime, with lots of organizations to help out in a tight-knit community, a.) you don't actually have a tight-knit community, and b.) your unit is going to fall apart under the stress of combat.

571 293 Anyone hear Obama yesterday say "I don't think I should have to offer anything." Yeah, the fix was in early. And yet Malor rushes to blame Republicans. Hugh Hewitt played that clip repeatedly yesterday. Then there is this gem from Harry Reid: "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) invoked Albert Einstein's definition of insanity as performing the same action repeatedly and expecting a different result. He panned the House-passed legislation for increasing the out-of-pocket healthcare costs of lawmakers and staffers. “This time the House has attached a poison pill that would punish 16,000 congressional staff,” he said. Senate Democrats left little doubt before the vote they would strike the amendments attached to a stopgap bill funding government through Dec. 15. Reid declared earlier in the day that Senate Democrats would not accept any changes to ObamaCare. He said they would not even negotiate oven the landmark law until after Congress raises the debt ceiling, which is due to expire Oct. 17. “We are not going to mess around with ObamaCare, no matter what they do,” Reid said. “They should get a life,” he said of House conservatives. “It is the law, declared constitutional. The exchanges are coming on board tomorrow.”

572 Ah, gee, Gabe.

The media blame Republicans.  It is what they do.  They blame Republicans for shutting down the government.  They blame Republicans because there are political disputes in DC.  They blame Republicans because Putin ate Obama's lunch in Syria.  They blame Republicans because foreigners don't respect the United States any more.  They blame Republicans because it rained right after they washed their car.  They blame Republicans because the bathroom scale shows they gained five pounds.

Doing anything or not doing anything in order to prevent the media from blaming Republicans is about as pointless as throwing virgins into a volcano.  It has no effect on whether the bad stuff is going to happen and it needlessly wastes virgins.

Gabe - one man's "antics" are another's "effective messaging."

The public will not spend the time necessary to learn about the subtle genius behind Boehner/Cantor's multi-dimensional parliamentary chess strategies.  And as Bush demonstrated with his "presidential" reticence in the face of left-wing mud-slingers, they will assume silence  and inaction = acquiesence and admission ("Bush lied...").

This is doubly so with LIV's.

We were going to be pilloried in the press no matter who did what when.  If we'd simply folded our arms and done nothing, the unfolding OCare trainwreck would be our fault ("The admin didn't have time and resources to devote to making this work because the Rethuglikkans kept fighting us...").

Sometimes the high risk, possible reward strategy is better than the low-risk, no reward option.

"But there's no reward from Cruz's antics !"

Except that one wing of the moribund Republican party has clearly stated its position and acted consistently with its stated principles.  Someone actually stood up to the Democrats and said no, albeit in a futile effort.

This has a lot more resonance with voters than Gabe and the other mavens of backroom Machievellian subtleties realize.

The great thing about the conservative strategy is that either outcome -- surrender by RINOS or non-surrender -- brings Good Things.  Surrender is gonna give some good intel and unity for the conservatives in our primary efforts.  Looking forward to the primaries and all that we have gained from the past two weeks.
