Top Headline COmments 10-10-13
— Gabriel Malor

Day 10.

There was, briefly, a juicy story put out by Associated Press that Terry McAuliffe had lied to a postal inspector in a fraud case. Alas, AP withdrew it just a few hours after making the claim. Instead, it seems the story is that McAuliffe invested in the guy perpetrating the fraud. Oh, and then took campaign contributions from him. Yeah, still a story.

Also briefly, the Libyan prime minister was kidnapped by one of the militias and then later released. "In a sign of Libya's chaos, Zidan's seizure was depicted by various sources as either an 'arrest' or an abduction."

House GOP leadership is still considering a short-term debt limit extension. For the moment this plan still has the support of Heritage Action and FreedomWorks.

NASA's Jupiter-bound Juno probe is in trouble. Apparently, its software is only operating in "safe mode."

2 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thursday, October 10, 2013.  On this day in 1780 the Great Hurricane of 1780 struck the islands in the Caribbean with winds that have been estimated to be above 200 mph (cat 5).  An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people were killed.  It also decimated the British and French fleets in the area who were contesting the islands during the American Revolution.  It is considered to be the worst Hurricane disaster in the Atlantic in recorded history.  And take this under advisement.  This was also during the "mini-ice age" which we did not really start getting out of until the 1800s.  Bring this up when people spew crap about global warming and hurricanes.

And on to the news because there is a LOT of it today.

6 The Democrats think Wall Street will panic if the shutdown drags on and it will help them in their nefarious bull shit.  So Obama is not the only one praying for a stock collapse.  When some libtard of your acquaintance brings up the stock market educate them to the fact that the stock market is not the economy and is not even a good barometer of it.  The stock market should still be in the shitter if it was because the economy is in the shitter and has been since 2009.

Levin kept pressing him about his strategy for getting rid of Obamacare, since Johnson did not join Cruz and Lee in the defund effort, and even accused them indirectly of being "intellectually dishonest." For all his indignation, Johnson did not offer any substantive alternate strategy when pressed by Levin. Worth a listen.

Only a few generations ago, walking to school or a bus stop was a regular part of daily life for millions of students in California.

These days, more than half of students in California and close to 60 percent in the Sacramento region are shuttled to and from campuses in private vehicles, according to a 2013 report, “Travel to School in California.” About 12 percent of students in the Sacramento region walk to school, the report said.

A decline in funding for school buses, greater emphasis on automobile travel, the increased volume and speed of traffic on major streets, and worries about crime have turned the concept of walking to school on its head.

The only way we can regain control of this out-of-control disaster in D.C. is to throw about 600 oath-breaking greedheads in jail. As long as the Prophets of Choom and their enablers are running things, the situation will only get worse.

77 I don't know, I mean, McAuliffe is obviously nothing more than a corrupt dem scumbag, but, Cuccinelli hasn't exactly been doing himself or his campaign any favors either. Hate to break it to you, but when you have stories like this running in the news: http://tinyurl.com/lageb97 It doesn't exactly bring a lot of people over to Cuccinelli's side. I mean, who exactly told him that it would be a smart idea to start trying to reinstate sodomy laws? SCOTUS has made some pretty bad decisions imo in the past decade, but, I don't think that Lawrence v. Texas is one of them.

79 Something that is different now then when I was a kid is local elementary schools.  When I first entered school we had elementary schools all over town so that the no kid would have to walk more than 2 or 3 blocks (and they were short blocks too).

But with the advent of all the new federal rules and union teachers the number of schools has severely declined to save money at the same time the cost per student has ballooned.

This is why fewer kids are walking to school.  That and society has got to be much more dangerous for kids thanks to lenient courts.

91 As a kid I used to walk to school in Houston. We lived just inside the 2mile limit for busing. My parents stopped letting me walk in the 4th grade after a group of people drove by and threw a 32oz glass coke bottle out the window and beaned me in the head. I was in the hospital for a week. So I have some sympathy for parents driving their kids to school.

92 This is why fewer kids are walking to school. That and society has got to be much more dangerous for kids thanks to lenient courts. My daughters school district dictated that anyone living within two miles of the school was 'on their own' for transportation. Doesn't matter if the kids have to cross a four lane interstate, dodge 65 mph traffic, and hop the guardrail to walk to school. Apparently, they're not special precious little snowflakes until they enter the school. My daughter kept going to school board meetings and complaining, threatening to pull her kids. I kept telling her that pulling her kids is exactly what they want.

93 Unintended consequences of dumb legislation. A middle school teacher in OH told her student to fail a test on purpose by providing silly answers to questions. The reason? Because she gets evaluated on how much the students "improve" during the year and this was the first test for that measure. Unbelievably she was fired. http://tinyurl.com/kvknsjb Actually, research has shown that the most accurate judge of a teacher's ability is a combination of three things: student performance on standardized tests, formal observations by administrators (preferably multiple observations by different administrators), and student end-of-course surveys. In fact, the heavier the test scores are weighted, the more accurate the assessment. The recommendation is that they be weighted between 50 and 75% of the evaluation score. The research been evaluated by comparing it against socio-economic data, race, and most other measures. IN this case, the teacher tried to game the system and got caught.

154 There's nothing simple about messing with the womb. Considering all the thousands of years women have tried to alleviate their body of a gestating life, only recently has the medical profession "refined" the abortion procedure so that the woman not only walks out alive, but remains fertile as well. It isn't as if a physician's aid or nurse will be held responsible for knowing ALL the complications possible complete with remedy, let alone know what best for the patient to do in an "oops" situation with the patient under the knife of malpractice. The rationale used to legalize abortion was that only M.D. physicians were qualified to safely perform the operation while protecting the woman's body (complete removal of the gestating life). California, Brown, AB154: The legislation legalizing back-alley abortions for profit. Because liberals care so much -- about profits, more specifically about profiting from degenerate unprotected sex. Harvesting comes next as the liberals don the mantle of 'conservation'. Shit.  I've seen people in my subdivision drive precious snowflake half a block to the bus stop--and the bus ride to the elementary school is two blocks.  I've had longer walks from the parking lot to my cubicle.

I think there might actually be a town rule here forbidding kids to walk; I drive by three elementary schools on my way to work every morning and in nearly two years I have never seen a child on the sidewalk.

With all due respect, you don't know what you are talking about. Cucinelli's actions in that case were about sodomy with someone who was underage, not consensual adult behavior. " I didn't understand what "gambling on terminally ill people" meantin various links and I was too disgusted to pursue it."

Someone has a life insurance policy.  Suddenly, they find out they have a terminal illness.  A company will buy their policy for a discounted price and give the ill person cash up front.

If the person dies within the normally predicted period of time for that illness, the company makes out.  If the person hangs on or (god forbid) gets better, the company gets screwed.

If may be a bit distasteful, but there are circumstances where this type of option would be very helpful to ill people.

Ann Coulter's middle name could be Hyperbole.  This is an overstatement of the perception that many physicians who are currently in practice will either take early retirement or opt out of certain plans, worsening an already existing shortage of doctors, necessitating FMG's, NP's and/or PA's, hence decreasing the overall quality of care. The concept is valid, the way she stated it is not.

And the current Redskins logo was designed by an indian group under George Allen. So much crap about nothing.

234 181 "I didn't understand what "gambling on terminally ill people" meantin various links and I was too disgusted to pursue it." Someone has a life insurance policy. Suddenly, they find out they have a terminal illness. A company will buy their policy for a discounted price and give the ill person cash up front. If the person dies within the normally predicted period of time for that illness, the companymakes out. If the person hangs on or (god forbid) gets better, the company gets screwed. If may be a bit distasteful, but there are circumstances where this type of option would be very helpful to ill people. Also when he disappeared he was in the hock for $23,000 in child support. So if he's found to be alive, his ex-wife is required to pay back any money she got back then, and according to her she doesn't have anywhere near enough money in bank to pay it. So he stiffed her on child support, and now he's trying to bankrupt her again. Plus he only came back to "life" a year before he would be eligble for SS himself. It's always the money.

I didn't think it was nepotism but the design and construction given to cronies and AA.  People who are contracted to actually install the stuff don't have to know the overall system, just have proper construction drawings for the part they are working on.  That should not be a problem.

From the things I have read about it the actual design of the system was inadequate.
