9 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, October 11, 2013.  On this day in 1809 Louisiana Purchase explorer Merriwether Lewis died at an inn along the Natchez Trace called Grinder's Stand.  At the time the innkeeper's wife told everyone it was suicide and that is what historians have maintained.  But he was shot multiple times including one in the head.  In addition all his money was missing. It is likely that the people running the inn got away with murder.

Meanwhile, in the land where the Republicans party once thundered in mighty herds as far as the eye could see:

California GOP lawmakers put politics aside to help constituents understand health law

Assemblyman Don Wagner, R-Irvine, said plainly he believes customers will experience increased costs under the law. Demographics are such that if many young people donÂ’t seek coverage through the exchange, it runs the risk of becoming economically unsustainable, Wagner said.

“That said, it’s the law of the land. The opportunity to get rid of it passed with the election in November, so we’re stuck with trying to make it work as best as we possibly can,” said Wagner. “My job as a state representative is not to try to thwart the federal law and throw monkey wrenches into it,” he said.

The pattern of closures (and, in the case of the fucking illegals, NON-closures) suggests some pre-planning as well. And I have no doubt the primary source of all this grief was Choom Boy.

Despite the Buddhist admonition to not 'pick and choose', I pick out the individual stories of interest to me at any given moment, searching on topics of interest, and if the internet serves up something interesting I go read it.

California community colleges will now be able to charge more for high-demand classes during summer and winter terms under legislation signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday.

The new law creates a voluntary pilot program that allows some colleges to charge non-resident tuition -- up to $200 per unit - -for hard-to-obtain classes such as college algebra, history and English that students need to graduate and transfer.

The plan is controversial and was opposed by students, faculty and community colleges Chancellor Brice Harris, who argued that it would create something like a fast-track pass for students who can pay.

What must happen, if the republic is to survive, is the debt must be reduced, and the political slush fund, awareness raising, political action committees have to be restrained. Good luck with that.

It was the only time we could go, so we were disappointed to learn that the park would be closed for a week or ten days: part of the transition from winter season activities to summer. Talked with a (pleasant and helpful) ranger, and learned that, sure, we could come in on foot, or by x-c ski; just don't expect any services. This is what we did, for several day trips into the park. Had a great time. That's how his could be going, if someone weren't trying to make a point.

87 Assemblyman Don Wagner, R-Irvine, said plainly he believes customers will experience increased costs under the law. Demographics are such that if many young people don’t seek coverage through the exchange, it runs the risk of becoming economically unsustainable, Wagner said. ------------ So to put this more succinctly, he sees a law that is unsustainable and is plainly a mistake, but he's not going to do anything to try and get rid of it. Because law. What a pansy-ass caliber of "Republican" this is.

The whole Park Service should be disbanded. ------------- A few days ago some FG (I think it was Hollowpoint) was saying we couldn't blame the rangers because they were only following orders and they have familes to feed, etc etc. It was unfair to hold them responsible for following the orders coming up from on high and hey, it was only a few barricades, nothing *bad.* Then this Yellowstone thing hit. I wonder if this fellow still thinks we should give the rangers a pass even though they kept a bunch of old people under armed guard.

It's looking more and more like that's the only way to save half of this country.  The other half can go straight to hell, imho.  But, we'd better do it soon.  Once amnesty passes, there will be no red states left.

CIVICS 101: one needs, for those not US folk, and for some of our own who don't know... to differentiate between the actions of the House and the actions of the Senate. The House originates all 'spending' bills. In our great wisdom, we ejected experienced House members in favor of novice folk running on narrow platforms largely concerned with one-issue items. THIS is the house that sets and defines the budget, and that must originate all SPENDING bills. The Senate may originate other sorts of legislation, and must pass the House bills to send them to the President, but it cannot set or otherwise create the budget. So it is solely the House that has orchestrated the shutdown. They are simply refusing to authorize payment of the bills. Anyone who lays the blame anywhere else is blaming someone who, by the US Constitution, cannot do anything but sign or refuse to sign what the House sends them. Since the House has not sent anything---the buck (literally) stops at their door.

I think at this point it really doesn't matter.

We have racked up a debt that can never be repaid.

In order to pay off the debt in 30 years we would have to devote 600 billion to doing all the while passing budgets that give us a surplus enough to re-allocate money to paying off the debt.

We could pay it off in 100 years if we put 200 billion towards paying it off.

188 9 Good Morning Morons. This past summer, I read Stephen Ambrose's UNDAUNTED COURAGE, a fascinating biography of Lewis. I grew up on The Journals of Lewis & Clark and am still a big fan, but Ambrose's book really provides a lot of important background, fills in a lot of blanks in the story, and does a great job of detailing the rest of Lewis's short life and controversial death. I recommend it highly.

200 81. Gov. Jerry Brown, CA: The new law creates a voluntary pilot program that allows some colleges to charge non-resident tuition -- up to $200 per unit - -for hard-to-obtain classes such as college algebra, history and English that students need to graduate and transfer. == The higher "non-resident tuition" is the standard everywhere. But the "hard-to-obtain classes such as" core curriculum required to graduate/transfer! What is the prime point of a TAX FUNDED community college system? To make readily available inexpensive core curriculum required to graduate/transfer. To hell with the fluff. When higher educational institutions systemically pervert their prime purpose to readily provide core curriculum, take away their tax funding. Whatever electives are offered at community colleges should still be courses required of a specific degree (history, creative writing, accounting); not tax funded fluff. The harder times get, the higher taxes will be increased by do-gooder politicians to keep funding candy as curriculum. Grotesque hypocrisy: "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." Spending tax funds to sponsor community yoga classes or needlepoint is socialist manipulation of the market place. Enroll in fluff privately, not at tax payer expense. Spending tax funds to meddle and hog private industry into an "academic" credit inhibits small private business entrepreneurs, while corrupting the point and opportunity of higher learning.

212 Cherryh's writing is OK, she's had some success imagining how an "Other" sentient species would behave.  But, her books break down when they insist on slamming the story onto the Liberal ramparts she worships.  It is a common failing among authors to stop the story line to inject their Liberal politics usually in a very insulting manner.   There is absolutely no reason to suppose that an alien species would automatically be Liberals because "Syriasly, you guys, they are more evolved than mankind."  In fact, it makes more sense that anyone spending time and resources to travel across galaxies might just be rapacious and greedy.

216 I think we would be better served to not cite slavery or any other past now no longer laws as examples of what used to also be the "law of the land" and point to the current "laws of the land" that are not enforced or enforced by this admin selectively, especially obamacare and the exceptions, extensions and waivers - if its the law of the land why is obama changing it so much.  Also, when you point to doma and marijuana laws that are being sorta skirted all over the place (without discussing the merits) just ask a liberal, why those "laws of the land" are not enforced, and why a group who draws their power from the "law of the land" of the constitution also hates the part about guns and if they are allowed to try and break that contract why do we have to listen on anything?

228 CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #425 Perhaps I've read too much science fiction, but I can't help thinking that the way out of this protracted battle over universal health care is a good ol' Edgar Allan Poe/Michael Crichton-style plague. Who's going to bicker over access to medical care or insurance deductibles if one wet cough from a busboy kills all the rack o' lamb-eating small government advocates in the restaurant? Who's going to fight against pre-existing condition coverage when it becomes frighteningly clear that we are all, rich and poor, smart and stupid, cute and inbred, swimming in the exact same bacterial soup? I'm betting no one. Because when that day happens, helping a sick person get well will not be an act of mercy or generosity. It will be the very definition of selfishness. And if history has taught us anything, selfishness rocks the casbah. Of course, there is plenty of sci-fi literature that takes this story down an even darker path. It involves everyone with a wet cough getting rounded up at gunpoint and trucked into "rehabilitation camps" in North Dakota. A privileged young man, raised on rack o' lamb, sees their suffering and sacrifices himself in order to lead them to a free clinic in Canada. When things are looking particularly grim in their march out of viral bondage, a small government advocate smiles cruelly and says to the young man, "Where's your health insurance now, Moses?" Said by an asshole worth over $600 million bucks...

249 Trucker's protest

It gets stirred up from time to time, agitators, hot heads, trouble makers. I've seen several and they never amount to much more than a lot of threats on the CB.

There is also a hard core minority of truly insane ignorant people who really hate trucks, and truck drivers. So it's easy to get 'things' stirred up. There were trolls on the CB before the internet was invented. They're like union organizers; that behavior has been around forever.

253 WaPo story says there are 15 trucks headed to the beltway at 7:30 driving with traffic. Hardly a protest. No trucking organization is supporting the action. See story @222 *** I said a few days ago that this would be a bust. I've been working in or directly with the trucking community since 1987 and I've seen repeated attempts to organize protests that fall flat on their face. That's not to say that they don't frequently have good reason to protest, after all, the government is doing it's level best to destroy the independent owner operator. That said. regulations now assign driver infractions to the employer for a period of three years and to the driver for five. Any driver jeopardizing the CSA2010 score for themselves or their employer will find work hard to come by. They simply aren't going to risk their livelihood for such a protest that is likely to accomplish little.

And itÂ’s not just talk. Last week, DNR employees stepped up and physically removed barriers placed by federal officials, restoring public access to places where thereÂ’s no defensible reason people should be prohibited to go.

That's what my grandfather was doing during the war.  Meanwhile, his brother was freezing his *ss off in Bastogne with the airborne.  Both made it home alive and lived 40+ years, but sadly I never got to talk to them about their experiences in the war.  Went to the last official combat engineer reunion in DC in 2004 I think, right after the WW2 memorial opened, heard some good stories about my grandfather from the surviving members of his unit.

291 Only police should have guns! http://tinyurl.com/ln58snc I started teaching classes for the Arizona CCW permit when it went into effect, and I immediately noticed that my students were well above average in attitude, responsibility, and civility. They always pitched in to assist in setting up where necessary, and their personal checks have always been good. When the first statistics became available, I eagerly digested the information. One person with a CCW permit had committed a homicide, although not with a concealed weapon. It was a domestic situation, and the perpetrator was a retired police officer. The question arose, how often do police officers commit homicide compared to concealed carry permit holders? Of the two, which is more common? It appears that a person is three times safer with a concealed carry permit holder than they are with a police officer.

Potschke ordering his subordinates to kill the US POWs at Bagneuz Crossroads is established fact. The SS troops killing the US POWs at the crossroads is established fact. The $64,000 question is: Did Peiper give a direct order to Poetschke to kill the POWs, or did Poetschke decide to kill them on his own? Only two people know that, and both are dead. Peiper claimed not to have given the order. But, on the other hand, he probably didn't have to. As Sepp Deitrich said in a staff conference before the attack: "Prisoners? 312 As for feeling better, Bigby, when you finally get home, do these things:

* Turn on the vaporizer or humidifier, cracked dry sinus and bronchial tubes are vulnerable.  If you don't have one, stop and get one.  The one made by Vick's is about $9.00 at Walgreen's.
*  Drink at least a quart of fluid--you are almost certainly dehydrated.  Preferably lemonade--it's easier on your tummy than orange juice.  Put honey in the lemonade for extra relief.
*  Now the folk remedy part--from my Sainted Mom--wash your feet and rub about a teaspoon of Vick's Vaporub into the soles of your feet and put on white socks.  This works for the same reason that reflexology works.
*  Go to bed.  Do not watch TV or read.  Sleep--your body needs all its energy to fight the flu or cold.
