Happy Thursday.

Some shutdown post-mortems:

Jonah Goldberg (NR): "No fair minded person can really argue that this predicament is where the Republican leadership wants to be."

Rick Klein (ABC News): "The lights are coming back on. But thereÂ’s little worth gazing on in Washington."

Nicholas Johnston (Bloomberg): "The @robertcostaNRO rally..."

Brett Norman (Politico): "With the shutdown over and a default averted, Washington has another train wreck to sift through: the Obamacare rollout."

Speaking of Obamacare:

NY Times has the story on page A18 of a guy who managed to log in to a state Obamacare exchange, but then discovered that there was no way to tell whether the listed healthcare plans would cover his medication or let him keep his doctor. "Exasperated, he put off completing his application." Also note this bit:

Problems finding providers or drug coverage are occurring mainly on state exchanges paradoxically because those Web sites are working better than the federal insurance exchange used by 36 states. The federal exchange has been so crippled by technical problems that most consumers have been unable to advance far enough to compare plans, search for providers or review drug coverage.

Visits to Healthcare.gov dropped 88% from its first week. "Obama administration officials challenged the independent assessment but did not release any specific enrollment figures."

4 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thursday, October 17, 2013. On this day in 1777 British Gen. Burgoyne surrendered in Saratoga, N.Y. during the American Revolution and no, I wasn't there although I did live in Saratoga for a while.  And on this day last year we were debating why Romney agreed to hold a debate with an ugly fat woman scrunt as the moderator.   Next time we will be debating the same thing.

18 Every conversation I've ever had with a low information voter concerning R vs D ends up with... "They are all the same anyway".

They are right, 100% right.  The "compromise" leads to the same result.

The tea party is the only group in DC that is different.  It's about time we stop the "compromise" and draw the line so the low information voter who says "They are all the same" can finally start to see a second party in DC.

Don't forget: we haven't yet learned the full extent of their sucking-up to the Prophets of Choom.

The debt ceiling is suspended? Fun times with what they consider an unlimited checkbook. A few extra billions for Bitch McConnell's dam project? What other goodies have been hidden away in yesterday's Reach-Across-The-Aisle spectacle?

But wait, there's more! There's always more for the FSA.

Also: Cory Booker.

You're presuming they want more conservative government.  I don't.  Anyone who considers themselves a proponent of smaller government cannot see yesterday as anything other than a complete surrender to the forces of Leviathan.  And yes, we will be lectured that the debt ceiling postponement isn't really a postponement, since the dog-eating crackhead has to deal with it again in February, but does anyone think the Man of Tan will suddenly wake up and grab his balls back from Harry Reid's purse?

The debt ceiling is gone.  Bank on it.  Come back in February and tell me I'm wrong.  I'm betting I won't be.

But hey, EoJ - a few Beltway types got to keep their phoney-baloney jobs, got nice puff pieces from the MFM and perhaps - if they're really good and well-behaved - they'll get to stand outside the White House windows like Stella Dallas and watch the next time TFG throws a party with Ke$ha's haunted snatch.

I thought it was a good question.

The thing is though, we know  the people you mentioned aren't even remotely interested in "conservative" government.  They don't elaborate on it, because it's not what drives them.

To the extent that anything does, what  seems to  drive  them is Republican bodies in warm seats.  The one consistent thing that has been occurring over these last several years however, is that there is no good that comes to conservatives from having Republicans in those seats.

The party is dead.  At this point, that's all we know.

The left pol's/media have called Ted Cruz every name the could possibly dream up, and he (Cruz) has stayed on message and didnot lower himself and engage in the name calling.

His discipline has enraged the left to the brink.

75 Great hymns of the faith- "I know who, I have believed." Words by Daniel Webster Whittle 1840-1901, A favorite Baptist hymn although it is found in the hymn books of other denominations: Whittle was named after American politician Daniel Webster. Whittle reached the rank of major in the American civil war, and for the rest of his life was known as “Major” Whittle. During the war, Whittle lost his right arm, and ended up in a prisoner of war camp. Recovering from his wounds in the hospital, he looked for something to read, and found a New Testament. Though its words resonated with him, he was still not ready to accept Christ. Shortly after, a hospital orderly woke him and said a dying prisoner wanted someone to pray with him. Whittle demurred, but the orderly said, “But I thought you were a Christian; I have seen you reading your Bible.” Whittle then agreed to go. He recorded what took place at the dying youth’s bed side: I dropped on my knees and held the boy’s hand in mine. In a few broken words I confessed my sins and asked Christ to forgive me. I believed right there that He did forgive me. I then prayed earnestly for the boy. He became quiet and pressed my hand as I prayed and pleaded God’s promises. When I arose from my knees, he was dead. A look of peace had come over his troubled face, and I cannot but believe that God who used him to bring me to the Savior, used me to lead him to trust Christ’s precious blood and find pardon. I hope to meet him in heaven. Webster went on to become a noted evangelist of the time. The words and music http://wn.com/old_baptist_hymn Yes, it's a good day, despite everything, Gabriel, because I believe God isn't through working in the world. :^)

76 Ha! Shutdown is over so the media spotlight will be Obamacare on the front pages. Uh, pivot.

As Flo (not Progressive Flo) used to say, "when donkeys fly."  Next media spotlight: amnesty and bringing those out of the shadows with dignity.

And imho, once amnesty is granted, any and all hopes for Constitutional amendments (of the Levin kind), and any hopes of states' rights saving this fubar'd country will be gone in a flash as red states turn blue almost overnight.

91 I will offer this observation that I received from someone directly involved and then go on to do productive things today.

We may have lost this fight, but we've started to build some camaraderie in the party. As you've probably read, at yesterday's conference meeting Boehner received standing applause. I've been critical of the Speaker, but this was well deserved. I say kudos.

Many believe this is a rallying point upon which we can build some sorely need unity in the party and together assemble a useful, winning strategy. I agree-- unless we can come together as a party and move the ball forward we will continue to lose.

What's killed us is the intra-party warfare. Nobody wins when that happens and the Democrats have, and will continue to leverage that against us. It will kill us all together.

The focus should be on a slow walk strategy that carefully moves us forward. Big, bold ideas followed by whatever we can pass. Nibble away at the Democrats as they've nibble away at our country and fiscal health over the years. This might be too slow for some (it is for me) but it is what is possible. The American people don't want dissension, they want action. Remember that next time you lob a thoughtless bomb at another party member.

One thing I will say is there are a few people that need to be run out of the party. Let's start with Peter King, for whom I have special contempt-- and I'll tell you why.

The conference agreed yesterday that it would show unity. That nobody would speak badly of anyone in the conference or what was done. In conference, all members agreed. But the minute the door opened King got his face in front of the cameras and press to speak about how "tea party Republicans" should be basically run out of the party.

Really?

That is the attitude which is destroying our party. Mindless idiots with no loyalty to anyone but MSNBC, who are primarily responsible for the mess we find ourselves in today. We should move beyond these fools to a new tomorrow- let's start today.

Sorry for the de facto blog post L:-/

109 Totally off topic here.. I want to recommend to you older 'rons & 'ronettes to get the shingles vaccine.

My wife had a bout of shingles a couple years ago on her face.. a quick visit to the doctor and getting on meds right away made it not so bad.  But I figured I better get the vaccine.

So, I did 2 yrs ago and thought I was safe.  However, last week on vacation I got shingles anyway.  I learned the vaccine is only about 60% effective.  But.. After a little over a week on meds I am pretty much over the effects.  It turns out those who have the vaccine get a milder case and, more importantly, do not get the nerve damage that shingles can give you for years.  A guy at work had them 5 yrs ago and he is still in so much pain he cannot wear a dress shirt.

So.. just some advice..  shingles is some nasty shit..

142 Deductibles are so high in Obamacare that what it basically will be is very, very expensive catastrophic insurance.  Oh sure, you can get your johnson pills and your abortions, and a few other things like free blood pressure screenings (if that doesn't take the pressure off the wallet, I don't know what will.../sarc).  But aside from a few things, nobody will ever reach their deductibles for the myriad of things that send people to the doctor.  And those poor people who will also have those outrageous deductibles will still wind up in the emergency room and walk out with nary a bill.

But at least Congress, their staff and Obama all are exempt from this cluster****.  We need them concentrating on the important things and not having to worry about their healthcare or insurance.

I really did lose it and didn't make a compelling argument because I was too upset and went to bed. But I have since asked her what the big deal is and why is it such a bad thing. I also told her that she was a smart girl, and she could read the information on Heritage herself and fact check, and to not dismiss something just because she's afraid of bias. So anyways wingnuts, it's time for you to shut up and support a path to citizenship for the millions of 3rd-world future Americans our big contributors want to use as slaves.

You guys are a tiresome and irritating base.  We're gonna try to build a new one.  John Boehner bought a sombrero, so we should be able to convince them to not be Democrats.  If you doubted our messaging power, look at how we failed to get out the word about a guy who barricaded popular national monuments.  It'll be a cinch to compete with people giving out taxpayer money.

Our biggest problem actually is that Mitch McConnell is trying to grab it all first.  We're gonna make him wear mittens safety-pinned to his jacket.

192 60. It's also the anniversary of Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown. Posted by: Gran at October 17, 2013 07:37 AM blast from the past, how long it took for Americans to sabotage our entire nation. Our leaders have transformed Constitutional Governance into a Ponzi scheme, after all was sacrificed and endured under the worst of conditions to ensure Liberty and the pursuit of happiness as our heritage, our ancestors' legacy, through our nation's birth. From this moment forward, it's cradle to grave socialism, no nuance, just in your face. Constitution? That's old school. This is new school for suckers on your worthless dime. And all those who say 'NOW it will be simpler, easier to prove socialism's errors to those who will never admit the truth' I repeat, don't hold your breath waiting for the blind to see the light. How dire our circumstances worsen weakens the knees, hearts and minds of those who already capitulated. Ted Cruz refuses to extinguish the light illuminating our American Renaissance, our new awakening, our awareness of each other as a strength against isolation, against the intolerable tyranny permeating our world here at home in America. No longer innocent, the knowledge between good and evil drove Adam and Eve from utopia. And they survived through their own labors. It couldn't have been easy for Saul of Tarsus to fall off his high horse, and be put to shame for his elitist vindictive self righteousness that literally required the lives of those who believed differently than he did. But he accepted the reprimand, and became Paul the messenger for Christ and ethnic tolerance in the newly birthed Christian community. Abruptly altered states of consciousness need not "mean" hopelessness. Rather, new life. Rougher circumstances. More demanding than before. But in the end, that much sweeter. We must learn from adversity and endure for the sake of keeping alive the love of truth: Liberty. Light exists. Whether people see it or not is the only question, acknowledgement. At present in Washington, we have the blind blinding those who would otherwise see, gouging out eyes as it were. If Leadership won't see, no one else gets to, either. Committing impeachable offenses, "Because I Could." Elect the Cruz alliance. Wash out Washington. Constitutional integrity exists and remains an ideal, our American life force. Constitutional Governance is the pearl of great price. You can ignore or defy the metaphysical; doesn't mean that the metaphysical isn't still as it always has been and will be, the immaterial existence which does not rely on the material in order to exist. But rather, in "life" itself, the material form requires the metaphysical life power for sustenance. Otherwise, death. Ironic. How frustrating for the material gluts and obese egos, to never be able to vanquish the ultimate IDEA that determines form. Yes, they revel in their powers. But for all their abuses of power, there yet remains the witness to truth. May God Bless Americans to cleanse ourselves (sooner than later) of tyranny that's spreading terrorism.

I'm sure to win in NJ it helps to be a fat shit RINO who doesn't do a fucking thing to help anybody other than himself. I keep hearing about what great financial shape the RNC is yet they stiff a candidate for the Senate which I keep hearing is really really important. So are they spending it on hookers and blow or a huge war chest for Jebby and Fat Fuck.

So the GOP caved so thoroughly on the Debt Ceiling (where they "had the leverage") that they will never have to cave on it again?

The Debt Ceiling votes were a farce, and they made the GOP uncomfortable because it put them on record as a bunch of lying corrupt shitbags.

This way here all the GOP guys can puff out their chests and talk about the Debt without having to be responsible for it.  They can throw pork at a few entrenched old-timers for the 1/3 necessary to stop it.

And this confirms what we all knew - nobody in DC thinks the deficit, or the debt, are problems.  That's your fucking realism right there.  These guys think it's all a game and are in it purely for personal gain.

They are useless and they suck.

So I heard an interview excerpt with Robin Leach, the Lifestyles of the Rich n Famous dude, saying to some other poncy Brit about how Obama is Teh Worst and how its all very near to irreversible now. He said that Obama is making the economic and political conditions of Britain prior to Maggie, which he and the interviewer had both escaped to the USA to avoid, and that he didn't think there were any Maggie-types available to the USA. He specifically mentioned Rand Paul as not being able to reverse anything, mostly since No Charismatic Enuf.

Me, I dunno. I thought it innerestin' he brought up Rand as being correct in message because both he and the interviewer have lived our near future...

The debt-limit is now entirely in the hands of the Executive branch (at least so long as there's a Democrat in the White House), the sequester is rolled-back, spending restraint is out the window, ObamaCare is now locked-in and will never, ever be legislatively repealed, the CR is full of pork, and we get to do it all again in 90-days so we're being set-up for yet another sell-out (likely on Amnesty). And yet, 3x as many Republicans as needed to ensure the passage of this pile of crap voted in favor of it. Meaning, they approve. As in, this wasn't a "bite my lip and take one for the team" vote, this is something they support. Meaning that, functionally, an effective majority of the GOP in CONgress is to the left of where were the DLC Democrats of Billy Jeff's era. But I - who wants small government more freedom and ObamaScrew repealed in addition to a whole host of other things that will now never ever, happen - am supposed to keep donating to and supporting Republicans because otherwise it will be worse? Poppin Fresh agrees with my read.

Ogabe has essentially a blank check to fund anything he defunded or held in the last 4 months.

Any vote on Debt Ceiling Hikes between now and 08 Feb 2014 requires the 66% to say "no" benchmark.

So if the Math used in the CR fight included Lew's cookie jar raids we're golden and if Ogabe has a lot of hidden debits we're headed for another fight or two.

307 DocJ The only part I disagree with you about is the idea that this is forever. As somebody who lived to see the Iron Curtain torn up from the inside, I don't believe in forever. A governing coalition that insists that 20 million illegal aliens is too many to hunt down and prosecute, is just not going to enforce orders on 310 million adults. I think already people are deciding that compliance is the sucker bet and defiance the smart play. Whether that determines elections I don't know. I doubt it for this decade, because one party embraces tyranny, and the other has now declared it has absolutely no duty to any voter. But I also doubt elections are going to matter as much.

351 Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Thursday that President Obama won the budget battle, and predicts the government won’t shut down again. “The president won. I give him credit, he won,” McCain said on CNN’s “New Day” program. “But he should have negotiated earlier and we could have prevented some of this pain.” The senior senator—whom Obama defeated in the 2008 presidential election—said he predicted the outcome of this battle because of the shutdowns he witnessed in the 1990s. McCain is confident, he said, that it won’t happen again. “We’re not going to shut down the government again. I guarantee it,” he said. “We’re not going to go through this shutdown again because people are too traumatized by it.” ??? how were they "traumatized" you senile old bastard? I was here the whole time, sympathetic to the intent, but I have no idea what it was that just happened.

Ted Cruz talked on the senate floor for 21 about defunding Obamacare.  That didn't happen.

A majority in the House and some in the Senate wanted something in exchange for extending the debt limit.  I don't know exactly what.

Now everyone is pissed.  We certainly lost, but what winning was is still illusive.

In true AoSHQ form, the regulars will compete to see who is more aggrieved and how many elected and potential candidates are "dead to them" now.

Let the bitching and moaning begin in earnest.

Or, just for a change, how about this...

Get two people here to agree on a few positions.  Economic policy, immigration, abortion, whatever.  Pick a couple and nail down  a politically viable position that candidates and elected officials can realistically adopt and stick to.

After we get two to agree, we'll work on three and so on.  Once a majority get on board, we can try to get Ace to use the platform of the "Conservative Blog of the Year" to push those positions to other bloggers and media.

At least we would have something to argue with.  A plan.  Something we can point to and say "this is the way we think it should be done".

Of course, bitching and moaning is much easier.

362 @316 - I suppose you're right and that we should never say never.

But given that the number of entitlements in the history of our nation that have actually ever been rolled-back long-term to say nothing of killed is precisely zero I'm pretty comfortable in that particular preduction.

366 Why does anybody read Poppin' Fresh? We understand your concerns and take them very seriously. So in a show of bi-partisanship, we'll keep the Commerce Clause and redact the 2nd Amendment.

You're Welcome.

371 "Pick a couple and nail down a politically viable position that candidates and elected officials can realistically adopt and stick to. " Nope. No more appeals to the considered judgment of the Republican Party. Since the elected officials aren't on board with reform, they can go. When enough of them are gone, your notions of "politically viable"will have to grow.

Which is a lie anyway, they got paid for all work prior to Oct 1 last weekend, and will likely be paid on time this weekend.

The disruption was a whopping 4 days pay. (If even that, honestly I didn't do the math, but that should be about right.)

FFS, I've had banking errors tie up more money than that before.

Frankly it's not worth the energy to tell him to DIAF. He's quickly replacing Jim Jeffords and MissingLinc Chaffee (who at least eventually had the grace to leave the GOP officially) as the worst GOP senators of all time.

What does that mean?  Are you saying that every politician who doesn't agree that all Social Security, Medicare and welfare must immediately end needs to be thrown out?
