Happy Friday.

As a follow-up to our shutdown theater posts, I've heard both at the office and from folks online about the Claude Moore Colonial Farm's Market Fair this weekend. If you're in the D.C.-area, you might think about going. I'm sure they could use the revenue after being shut down for so long.

If you're still in the mood for shutdown fight post-mortems, here's two more from National Review guys Rich Lowry and Jonah Goldberg.

To be honest, I don't think either the GOP or conservatives are capable of learning from past mistakes. This played out so exactly as predicted, but there's no evidence that I can see that either group thinks it needs a change in tactics. Goldberg writes once again that this was about a fight over tactics, but conservatives simply don't believe that.

Lowry notes that after weeks of squirming, we ended up pretty much where we started, but I think it's worse than that. We started with GOP leadership and the Democrats all inclined toward a one-year clean CR that preserved the sequester cuts. What we got was a three-month CR. Why so short? It was so short because Democrats realized that they could get another shot at undoing the sequester. In light of the GOP's now-obvious shortcomings, Democrats are salivating at undoing the only substantive spending cuts the federal government has seen in over a decade.

I'm not going to get drawn into a fantasy about the budget commission working, but if you'd like to follow it's inevitable collapse, the NYTimes has a notable article on its shitty start, with no real entitlement reform on the table (entitlement reform was the GOP's claimed demand): "With the scope of the talks narrowed for now, on the table are ideas left over from past, failed bargaining: possible reductions in other programs — like farm subsidies, federal pensions, the Postal Service and unemployment insurance — and relatively minimal tax loophole closings, possibly as little as $55 billion."

Three legal groups are fighting to take the lead role in Virginia lawsuits that they think will lead to nation-wide lawful gay marriage. I flag it because you're probably going to be hearing about either the Bostic or the Harris cases next year.

The video this week comes from Citizens Against Government Waste. There's heavy breathing:

Have a great weekend.

Looking back at how this played out...

The GOP looked like it was winning for a time, then the NBC poll came out and turned the tide.

Of course, no other polls came out quickly to show the NBC poll was an outlier, so the right got scared and folded.

It all depends on who is doing the polling.

8 This Is disingenuous in the extreme. You didn't predict shit Gabe. We all knew the republicans were going to screw up, it was just a matter of when and how. A lot of us simply declined to stab Cruz in the back. His efforts were far more noble than those of King, Mccain, and the Kickback folks. The dems were not going to negotiate, that's why Cruz tried what he did! Nice revisionism Gabe.

If we learned anything from this partial shutdown, it's how the GOP has abandoned its base.   Rush mentioned it a couple of years ago: the  GOP doesn't want a smaller  government, they want to control it.

Levin has a good rant  about the TP and the shutdown. He says for the powers that be (Prog/Coms and Establishment Pubbies, BIRM) had better watch it -

11 Rush was taking another tack yesterday and said we don't hear anything about what the dems had to give up -- and they did have to give up something big -- an increased budget.  He says dems never thought R's would pull the plug on military spending and the automatic sequester (Barry's idea from the get-go) kicked in and took us to 2008 spending levels.  Dems are livid but you'll never hear anything about this in the MFM because it's a major blow to the party.

Yeah, it's a burden to always be right, isn't it, Gabe?  Here's a thought - perhaps. . .just perhaps. . .if the GOP wasn't composed of backstabbers like McCain and King, weak-as-water nonentities like Ayotte and compromise uber alles  shitstains like Collins, something might have been achieved.  It's pretty fucking hard to outwit and outfight the Democrats when your own goddamn "colleagues" are hell-bent on sabotaging you at every opportunity.

**deep sigh**

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  IÂ’m still not feeling right / happy enough for a long story, so let me give you three quick little Tinseltown anecdotes today:

While all of the great Hollywood moguls could be hard-asses in their own way, Harry Cohn of Columbia and Jack Warner of Warner Brothers were probably the worst.  When director Hal Wallis (he of the many Elvis movies) decided to leave Warner and start his own production unit at Paramount, Jack Warner vowed to make his last month at the studio a living hell.  He began by locking Wallis out of his office.  Wallis shrugged at that and set up a desk on the lawn, determined to continue his duties.  When Warner heard what had happened, he ordered a truckload of horse manure to be dumped on the lawn next to WallisÂ’ desk.

Poverty Row studio Republic Pictures specialized in Westerns, some of which have been described as “the worst sagebrush sagas ever made.”*  During the production of 1947s The Fabulous Texan, a team of Indians were brought in to make sure that the smoke signals called for in the script were authemtic.  After the picture wrapped, the producer congratulated the redskins on their careful supervision.

“It was easy,” one of them explained.  “We learned how to do it from the movies.”

And finally, a story that gives me an excuse to post a little cheesecake – for one scene in 1954s The Last Time I Saw Paris, Elizabeth Taylor showed up displaying rather more cleavage than usual.  Rather than argue with her, the assistant director called in MGMs “bust inspector,” who was a rather young, earnest woman with horn-rimmed glasses.  Asked to give her evaluation, the inspector took one look at Taylor and ordered a ladder.  When it was brought to the set, the girl climbed to the top and peered intently down into TaylorÂ’s magnificent embonpoint before announcing the dress would have to be changed.  At this, director Richard Brooks exploded with a string of old-fashioned Anglo-Saxon epithets and the poor but inspector ran away in tears.  Soon after filing her report, she handed in her resignation.

So hereÂ’s Taylor with co-star Van Johnson (sorry for the poor quality):

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

****************

^ THIS ^.  Unvarnished, inarguable political truth:  No political party has ever, E-V-E-R achieved electoral success by warring, spitefully and continually, against its own voting base.

You'd think the piss-poor attendance at both the McCain and Romney presidential inaugurals would render at least that much decently self-evident, really.

Posted by: jwest at October 18, 2013 07:07 AM (u2a4R) So the takeaway is that the GOP is spineless. Yeah we knew that. The fact is that the surrender-monkeys GAGA (go-along-to-get-along) crowd in the GOP have no stomach for any sort of fight. Even when they can win on something as hated as Obamacare, instead of pounding it everytime a microphone is put into place, instead of putting person-after-person who has lost insurnace, full time employment, or has to make a choice between EATING and housing or HEALTH INSURANCE, they do nothing. Instead of actually, you know, trying to sway public opinion, they attack conservatives. Obviously you POSs don't like conservatives - let's see how well you do without us in the next election. If your congressman or senator voted for this piece of shit or didn't support the effort, vote for their opponent in the primary. If they win the primary, vote for the opponent in the general election. We aren't teaching them a lesson, we're removing the dead trees from the forest; that might mean we're going to scorch a lot. Well, it's long past due. Let them try to make up the votes with illegal aliens.

Gabe, and the Republicans in D.C. simply do not understand what has happened.  The "tea party" conservatives have had enough of the status quo.

We have been the battered wife for years now.  Time after time we have taken a beating from the establishment republicans.  The beater blames us for having to beat us because WE are the problem.  The beater takes us out for a nice dinner and flowers every two years or so, but then goes right back to beating us.

Well, this "victim" is done with the abusive spouse.  There will be no more beatings because I am leaving the house.  So are a lot of other conservatives.

The NBC poll was actually overkill, I think they cooked it too much.  It was so over the top it was a joke.  20% government households.

This was essentially MSLSD waving its atrophied dick in our faces saying "see 1/2 your caucus is on our side and will believe anything."

With plenty of handcuffs and jail cells, actually.

While Gabe pisses all over the riff-raff who dare to challenge the wisdom of the D.C. Entrenched Republicans, Choom Boy goes on his merry way, engaging in rampant cronyism -- how many of his tight buddyroos and fellow Community Activists now have positions of authority in the government now? -- spending more money we don't (and will never) have and trashing what's left of the Constitution. No one is bothering to even think about how to rein him in. I guess we'll wait until his Muzzie terrorist pals are in charge and the rest of us are penniless and even more voiceless.

I hope someone displays some guts, patriotism and respect for the law today. Enough of the alternating whining about and praising the worthless fuckweasels who play the game of government.

43 I didn’t hear this nonsense until my way home last night. TFG said that we have to stop listening to the talking heads on radio, the bloggers etc or win an election. Fox & Friends showed how many House members won their seats this morning. 44 To be honest, I don't think either the GOP or conservatives are capable of learning from past mistakes. This played out so exactly as predicted, but there's no evidence that I can see that either group thinks it needs a change in tactics. Goldberg writes once again that this was about a fight over tactics, but conservatives simply don't believe that.

On the surface, yes, it was a fight about tactics.  but, much like in all relationships, the blow-up can be about something completely irrelevant to the real issue.  Your wife may explode at you about not taking out the garbage, but she's really mad about something else (perhaps she is suspicious you are cheating).

Here, while superficially, it was a fight about tactics, the real fight is about the fact that conservatives don't believe that the GOP has any intention to pursue conservative goals.  That the GOP will never really seek repeal of Obamacare (unless it is easy - i.e., polling at above 70% when the GOP holds the house, senate and WH).  Conservatives don't believe the GOP is serious about entitlement reform.  Conservatives don't believe the GOP is serious about cutting spending.  Etc.

And conservatives are right.  You seem awfully invested in how the GOP does, but it doesn't matter.  The fact that Boehner will retain his position after giving liberals everything they wanted shows that the rank and file GOP in the house are fine with it.

While the end was predicted, it was predicted the way it was predicted because we all knew the GOP would never hold firm for anything and would cave to liberal demands.  Saying that we shouldn't have fought because we knew the GOP was never going to do what we wanted - but oh yeah, we should definitely still support the GOP - is idiotic.

In other words, Gabe, your entire point is to root, root, root for the home team regardless of what the home team does.  You are GOP first, conservative never in actual practice, despite your writings.  When push comes to shove, you want to simply keep doing what we have been doing and allow the GOP to just keep on lying to us and caving at every opportunity.

You believe you are fighting for "smart" strategy and tactics.  Really, you are the abused wife telling her friends that this time he means it, he'll never hit me again.   In 10 years you will still be arguing that the time is not right to make any waves, next year, after the next election, will be the right time to tackle the problem . . .

Allow me to share some news:

A petition on the MoveOn.org website is calling for the Department of Justice to arrest some House Republican leaders for their roles in the government shutdown and debt ceiling debates.

The petition singles out Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House majority leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), as well as “other decision-making House Republican leaders,” for the crime of “seditious conspiracy against the United States of America.”

“The House GOP leadership's use of the Hastert Rule and H. Res 368 to shut down the government and threaten the U.S. economy with default is an attempt to extort the United States government into altering or abolishing the Affordable Care Act, and thus, is self-evidently a seditious conspiracy. Arrest the perpetrators in Congress immediately and bring them to justice,” the petition reads.

Imagine the ear-popping screams from the left if any so much as to-the-right-of-Stalin website called for the jailing of Democrats - who, IMO, should all have been arrested and / or hung for treason during the Iraq war.  And yet this petition, hosted on the website of a group that is bound mouth-to-groin to the Democrats, will never see the light of day if the MFM has its way.

And those, Gabe, are the people you think we should negotiate with?  These are the people that assholes like McStain calls "my friends?"    As Insty says, these people are telling us, in no uncertain terms, what they will do to us if they ever have the power.

52 I think later this weekend, Mrs VIA may go to the range and shoot.
She will probably go with two of our friends, Two women in a committed relationship to each other. Been together for years. Raised a son to serve in the military. Believe in civil union, but not gay marriage. Staunch conservatives who wish that the government would reduce spending, and tighten up on entitlement programs. They despise the Dems, and are constantly let down fiscally by the GOP.

I find that I have more in common politically and ethically with these two women than many other people that I know.

Yeh...it makes my head hurt, but it is what it is.

I wish I could photoshop a Tea Party flag with a rainbow background.

54 He has positioned himself as the undisputed front runner for 2016 -- well, as far as our ilk is concerned. Reagan and Nixon actually did the same thing by standing by Barry Goldwater when the establishment trashed him. Cruz and Lee stood up for what was right and even those on the left realize it. Posted by: RushBabe at October 18, 2013 07:28 AM (hrIP5) Cruz & Lee are the only ones that actually tried to do something to rid us of TFGcare. They vowed to do what ever they could and in my eyes, they are the only two senators worth keeping. McCain is a traitor, Graham is an idiot, but harmless compared to McConnell. McConnell has to go, heÂ’s not a leader. He refused to take a stand on Syria until the people in the country spoke out. Cantor also had to go. IÂ’m not sure of Boehner. I think heÂ’s a bad speaker but we know the SCOAMF is a petty, childish man child. We do not know just how bad he is to deal with on a one to one basis. IÂ’m going to give Boehner the benefit of the doubt for now. They gave him a standing ovation, there must be a reason for that.

This notion (no difference between the parties) has become so pervasive, that it now stands as "fact" for a lot of y'all here.  I just don't see where you come up with it.  We just fought a battle for nearly 3 weeks that clearly showed the difference.  The House Republicans passed bill after bill, nearly unanimously, defunding Obamacare, funding the important stuff, etc..

The battle was un-winnable.  And because a lot of you refuse to believe that, the GOP is now dead to you.  It's ridiculous.  The GOP, except for known squishes like McCain and other Senators stood up and let our positions get as much press time as the libtard MFM would allow - which isn't much.  But I think the American voter saw clear distinctions.

Perhaps the fact that Leviathan has grown at an almost unchecked pace since - oh, hell, I'll be generous  -  LBJ, and the GOP has done nothing, even during the terms of Ronaldus Maximus, to slow or stop its growth.  A Republican party would long since have zero-budgeted HUD, DoE, IRS and EPA out of existence.

GOP wanted to delay the roll-out by a year.

More and more media reports show that Obamacare is not ready for prime time.
Barky is stuck with the inconvenient fact that if he blinks and delays it, the GOP is going to go with "Stupid rabid ass jug eared fuck  could have saved the nation a lot of pain, but he went all petulant on us", or something like that.

We need our leaders to stand up and publicly call for targeted boycotts like the left does. Aim for people who advertise on Facebook. Facebook supports Obama so hit them where it hurts. We need to have Tea Party AG's start bringing civil rights violations cases against Facebook for violating people's free speech rights. Will they will, probably not, but lets make them spend their money on law suits not Dem campaigns.

73 I hate that our legislating has become theater and propaganda. That good ideas, and bad ones, don't stand or their own merits. Well fine then, get some strategists that understand theater. In February, Boehner should pass another CR on party lines that has everything in it, but repeals OCare, and then have all 233 Republican Reps walk it over to the Senate. Then adjourn. Then have every Republican, every one, answer any question, on any subject, by saying 'We have fully funded the government, except for OCare that the majority in this country doesn't want. Let the Senate pass that and then we can talk about what the people want to do about healthcare in this country.'

A) Personally, I think Ace is wrong about the truth always winning out. People don't believe in truth--they believe what is easy to believe, what they want to believe. Right now our entire society is geared toward enforcing and re-enforcing liberal progressive "Truth".

2) To the extent that the truth can win the GOP has expressed zero interest in getting it out there. No one in a major leadership position has called bullshit on Obama's economic numbers.

III) The potential voters that would be most receptive to the truth, working poor, upper lower class, and lower middle class, really aren't the current GOP's cup of tea. They are dirty, crude, unenlightened on issues like the gheys, immigration, and race relations, and generally just regarded as an embarrassment to anyone they vote for.

the GOP is dead to me because of the undermining actions of the leadership like McConnell and McCain.  I never thought they could repeal or defund Ocare.  I thought they could fight, get their message heard, and get a delay and a repeal of the medical device tax.  They may have if they were not undermined from the git go by Senate leadership.

As long as the GOP exists primarily to support the re-election of McCain, Graham and McConnell, then no, they will not get one ounce of support from me.

81 The thing I have learned from the shutdown and the Republican response to it, is that we have elected men and women who are fine during fair weather and blow over without effort in a breeze. Obama has brought the hurricane. We need more people like Ted Cruz who don't mind standing in the hurricane, facing flying 2x4's and oak trees coming through the roof of the guest room. As Dave Ramsey says, the problem with Obamacare is math. And no one escapes math. At some point, and it's getting closer and closer, someone with huevos will have to stand again, only this time, Valerie Jarrett will have learned that intransigence works on spineless Republicans, just like she predicted. So it will take even longer, and be tougher. She and her little lad Barry want to take this whole country down. They have made huge strides in the last few weeks. I used to be an abused wife. I learned to flinch if my ex raised his hand to rub his nose (this is the way I see the Republicans in the face of Obama scowling and posturing). One day I woke up, realized my life sucked and would only get worse. I decided to leave him. The day I actually left was a scary as shit day - he had me pinned to the floor and was choking me, and was screaming that he wanted to kill me. At that moment I realized I could die then, or die slowly from staying, so might as well risk going. When the plane wheels lifted off the tarmac, I felt like I had let myself out of prison. My ex cleaned out all the bank accounts, and I was so broke I couldn't buy new underwear for nearly three years because I had to pay my lawyers. But later, I married a man who has been wonderful to me and wouldn't even bump into me roughly on purpose. You know what I learned from standing up and leaving? That I was strong, and I learned to face fear and be bold. Republicans in Congress should stand up and leave their abusers, and live through it. As it worked out, they chose to go back into "duck and cover" mode. Dumb for them, horrible for America.

Anyone can claim to be American Indian and escape the most financially devastating parts. Once that information becomes common knowledge 'voluntary compliance' will go directly into the shitter. Despite what that old fool has said, we know he’s wrong. He wants to be that Maverick but he’s got no fight in him unless it is to fight against Cruz and anyone else that doesn’t meet his moderate stand. That old fool ran to the right to be reelected and then turned right back into a traitor to the conservatives that fell for his “change of heart” regarding how dangerous the open border was. I believe in the Tea Party's goals of a smaller government and less taxation.  I believe in the Tea Party's goal of Constitutional adherence.  For the moment, men like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Mike Lee and Trey Gowdy appear to also share those goals (albeit there might be small slips along the way).  Because I support Ted Cruz, John McCain calls me a "wacko bird."  Peter King says I should be "run out of the party."

97 "never be proud of adopting the left's "memes". "

That's how you show the world how "reasonable" and "level headed" you are.  When you roll your eyes the same way Mika does, you show that you're not one of "them".

Hey, anyone can have any opinion they want of public figures.  What we're talking about is the optics of when you voice those opinions.

It doesn't matter if every liberal in the world is talking trash about someone.  That's what they do.  It only becomes real when people on our side start agreeing with them.

It may be their honest opinion, but it really doesn't help the cause.

The current 'Rat electoral strategy, in miniature, is:  "FREE TRIPLE SCOOPS OF ICE CREAM FOR EVERYBODY, EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!"

The current establishment GOP counter-proposal -- the absolute, unalloyed best their Rove/Morris/NRO brain trust can come up with, by way of direct response -- is:  "NO, NO!  EVEN BETTER:  FREE *DOUBLE* SCOOPS, AND ONLY *FIVE* DAYS A WEEK!!!"

The very concept that there is not now, nor ever *will* be any appreciable voting constituency for Everything the Other Guys is Promising, Only Slightly Less OF It, seems to be one eternally beyond their collective ability to decently grasp -- like a terrier attempting to grok John Cage music, or a cantaloupe struggling with the principles of long division.

A political opposition message, in order to be successfully competitive, has to actually... y'know...stand in OPPOSITION to something.

127 MV Seaman Guard Ohio: India police arrest crew of US ship BBC News, Oct. 18 http://tinyurl.com/kcm3bma According to AdvanFort there were privately contracted security personnel on board the Sierra-Leone registered MV Seaman Guard Ohio. Analysts say that anti-piracy measures on high-risk shipping routes are poorly regulated and India is increasingly sensitive to violations of its maritime boundaries. Police in India say they have arrested the crew of a US-owned ship accused of illegally entering Indian waters with a huge cache of weapons on board. Officials say MV Seaman Guard Ohio was detained on 12 October by the Indian Coast Guard and is currently anchored at a port in southern Tamil Nadu state. Its 35-member crew include Indians, Britons, Ukrainians and Estonians. There have been differing accounts of the chain of events from the Indian authorities and the US-based security firm. The US embassy told the BBC it had "no comment" to make. The British high commission in Delhi said consular officials had been in touch with them. India directly supports the multi-national campaign to combat the mostly Somali pirates targeting ships in the Indian Ocean with its own navy. But it's been controversial too, with the Indian authorities prosecuting two Italian marines on anti-piracy duty for allegedly shooting two fishermen inside Indian waters last year. And this came after the Indian government was accused here of being soft on Italy, by initially releasing the marines. With elections approaching the government will want to avoid giving any new ammunition to its opponents.

132 "Lowry notes that after weeks of squirming, we ended up pretty much where we started, but I think it's worse than that."

Er, well, no.

Before this started, the GOP had bitched and moaned about Obamacare, but hadn't done anything genuinely substantive to resist its implementation.

Now, as Obamacare slowly grinds into motion, with a horrible clashing of gears and cloud of acrid smoke, and heads for the edge of the cliff, the GOP have made at least a clear statement of intent regarding the thing.

There will be a _lot_ of voters who are unhappy with Obamacare. That groundswell of discontent is happening already. And the GOP now can say to those people something that they could not have said previously. To wit:

"Hey, we did everything we could to stop this thing you hate. We even shut down the less necessary parts of the government over it. But the Democrats put us in a position where if we resisted any longer, genuinely necessary government functions were likely to stop.. We couldn't in good conscience take it that far. So the blame for this Obamacare mess rests with the Democrats who insisted so hard on making it happen. It's all on them."

In a perfect world, we conservatives would take the GOP over as it would be a much better solution than a third party. Sadly, I have no idea on how to do that....

First thing it to find a good candidate, then send money directly to their office. Bypass the RNC or any other establishment GOP organization altogether. That's been how most TP candidates have  achieved success.

If you look at the political landscape since '09, we really have made quite a bit of progress.  Not quickly  enough, but enough to  garner some influential enemies, especially within our own ranks. And certainly not enough to stem the tide of Prog/Coms, but we need to remember that nothing is cast in stone, and anything the government does, government can undo. It's simple but not  easy.

Will the speaker of the House adopt a more confrontational stance with hard-liners in order to advance achievable conservative legislation?

Will conservative media wise up and stop enabling destructive forces and figures?

Will donors to Heritage and other right-wing groups sour on use of their funds to attack conservatives who donÂ’t measure up to Cruzian levels of fanaticism?

Mainstream conservatives donÂ’t have the ability to stop Cruz from being Cruz or to convince Jim DeMint to stop being a menace. They can, however, push back. One way is by, as Sen. Lindsey Graham did....

141 Those Republicans arguing there were rotten tactics used in the battle, or the end-game was always going to be a loss, are entirely missing the point. For all too long, the GOP has pronounced itself the better governing party. If the national political discussion has been dominated by collectivist tyrants, say the Repubs, well then we should try to make the tyranny more effective and less damaging to the economy. This fight was doomed to fail in tactical terms from the beginning. But it starkly illustrated who is on our side and who is on the other side. Peter King being a great example, since he flew the most ardent anti-Tea strafing missions in support of Democrats throughout the fight. The fight also began to put a dent in the Presidents stubborn poll support. It turned Harry Reid,in the minds of the broader public, not a figure of dislike. This battle may have seemed to the inside ball players of politics to be a loser from the start, but it prepared the ground for the far more serious battles coming up. It was noble, and it made an overtly ideological pitch to the public. That's going to be a big help to us going forward.

This fight needed to happen. The coalition was fracturing. The Tea party needed a lesson in politics. They got their fight, lost but now know how it works. Don't abandon the GOP. Take it over. Remember when the Dem party wasn't led by hard left progressives? Remember when they were 1/2 Blue Dogs? Progressives learned that you have to have patience, work locally and take over the party bit by bit. I believe the Tea party is beginning to grasp this concept. Now, if they can grasp that you need likable, non-complete-kook candidates (Akin, Mourdock, etc), they will continue to strengthen their numbers with more Cruz's and Paul's and effect political change.

And why would we believe it? You seem to think that there are no reasons to distrust the Republican establishment. Our last presidential candidate was Mr. Romneycare and one of the "conservative" alternatives to him was Newt Gingrich, who wrote in favor of the federal mandate. Ask a Republican about his solution to pre-existing conditions and they will have a good reason to weasel out of the question. Paul Ryan announces that he wants to work hard to secure Social Security for the next 75 years as a federal program and so prolong the rotten legacy of FDR. Or look at the Comprehensive Immigration Betrayal.

As I tweeted Levin last night, when the GOP said no thanks fuck off the morning after Romney lost, fiscal and social conservatives should have left the GOP and started their own party, as the GOP had lost two WH runs with moderate, "electable" candidates. Proving that the fallacy that you have to go to the center was just that, a fallacy. Now it is too late to form a third party with the midterms a little over a year away unless you are conceeding 14 and going full in for 16. Rough sledding ahead folks. To be honest, if you havent planned accordingly, you are screwed.

176 Saudi Arabia, in an unprecedented show of anger at the failure of the international community to end the war in Syria and act on other Middle East issues, said on Friday it would not take up its seat on the United Nations Security Council. The kingdom condemned what it called international double standards on the Middle East and demanded reforms in the Security Council. Related: Rice slams UN Security Council's failure on Syria US: Russia holding UN Security Council hostage to protect Syria's Assad Riyadh's frustration is mostly directed at Washington, its oldest international ally, which has pursued policies since the Arab Spring that Saudi rulers have bitterly opposed and which have severely damaged relations with the United States, Saudi analysts have said. Saudi Arabia has also been angered by a rapprochement between Iran, its old regional foe, and the United States, which has taken root since President Barack Obama spoke by telephone last month to the new Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, in the highest-level contact between the two countries in more than three decades. Citing the Security Council's failure to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, take steps to end Syria's civil war and to stop nuclear proliferation in the region, Riyadh said the body had instead perpetuated conflicts and grievances. "Saudi Arabia ... is refraining from taking membership of the UN Security Council until it has reformed so it can effectively and practically perform its duties and discharge its responsibilities in maintaining international security and peace," said a Foreign Ministry statement issued on state media. The conservative Islamic kingdom has traditionally avoided big political statements, preferring to wield its influence as world's top oil exporter, birthplace of Islam and chief Arab ally of the United States behind closed doors. 177 MPPP, love the Indians/smoke signal story. When I was a kid, we went to one of those "living history" exhibits at Plimoth Plantation (yes, that's spelled correctly, before any grammar cops pull me over) near my hometown in Mass. One of the conceits is that they have to pretend that it's 1600s or earlier, so they act surprised if they see a watch or a camera, etc. Anyway, one of the Indians off to the side of the main exhibit was making a canoe, and I asked him what he paddled it with. He just looks at me without cracking a smile and says, "A paddle." The crowd reaction was a bit like the Alamo-basement scene in Pee Wee's Big Adventure. As a 12-year-old boy, I was really hoping that he was going to SHOW me what he paddled it with.

179 Here are three more things to take away from the shutdown showdown:

(a) This is a harbinger for how American politics will work for the next couple of years.

(b) The GOP are horrible at messaging.

(c) The GOP are deeply internally schismatic and conflicted.

Any hope of improvement on any of these?

There is no hope of improvement regarding (a). Welcome to the new reality.

There might be some hope of improvement of (b) if we can drum into retirement some of the old guard Beltway Republicans. They've been in D.C. for so long they have forgotten how to talk effectively to the voters. As evidenced by their constant use of inside-baseball budget terminology that a lot of the public just don't understand.

I don't think (c) will improve, but I expect that there will develop some equally significant schisms on the Democratic left to match the ones on the Republican right. That Obama is losing major labor unions like the longshoremen over Obamacare is a symptom of such fracturing of the left.

>>>>First thing it to find a good candidate, then send money directly to their office. Bypass the RNC or any other establishment GOP organization altogether. That's been how most TP candidates have achieved success.

I disagree with this now. Yes, that is the past result, and we've done it this exact way for the last two cycles [actually 4 since that method predates the TP] and we haven't really affected the GOP as an institution. You can argue that we're at some tipping point, and I'll listen to any proof you think there is of that. For myself, currently, I think we have to be more nimble than trying the same ole same ole and move on to staking out new claims.

Mostly, I think the problem is the GOP institutions. The funders, the advisors, the support and money structures, the chairs, everything. You can get a great candidate and get people to back him/her but in the end its only one person against an entrenched bureaucracy that isn't affected by any of that. They get swallowed by the sea  and the waves go on like nothing happened.

The Real News of October 2013

On board the ms Noordam, at port in Venice

"Now, what news on the Rialto?" you ask those of us enjoying THE WEEKLY STANDARD Mediterranean cruise (echoing Solanio in Act 3, Scene 1, of the Merchant of Venice).

The answer: Not much news, but lots of fun. The cruise is now about half over, having started in Rome and stopped in Corfu, Kotor, and Dubrovnic, before the last day and a half in Venice. The panels on ship while at sea have, I think, been lively and interesting.

Whether on sea or land, though, it's been pretty easy to tune out the news from Washington, D.C., where Republicans seem to be in some disarray and the media is chortling about an anticipated victory for President Obama in the government shutdown/debt

And now, up to the top deck to say, Arrivederci Venezia!

The spokesman for WorkSource Oregon Employment Department said the workers received at most a weekÂ’s worth of unemployment benefits. The spokesman said he did not know how many workers received the benefits. He confirmed that furloughed federal workers in the state do not have to re-pay the state unemployment benefits. The employees will receive double pay because the budget bill approved by Congress provides that all furloughed government workers will receive back pay for the days they did not work under the partial government shutdown. If if wasn't that poll it would've been something else. But the fact that the shutdown happened at all is cause for hope for conservatives. It shows how much pull conservatives have within the GOP when they want to exercise it. I'm hopeful overall because I'm taking the long view. Here's what I've seen of the TP Method: Several candidates will announce their intention to run as Pubbies. One of them will be the most   conservative of the group. The Establishment/National GOP  will ignore them.  Then, local TP orgs will start to  endorse the seeming loser, money starts flowing into the TP candidate coffers, allowing their message to get out.  They get elected.

I can recall a couple of candidates who had TP backing who were ignored by the Est/Nat GOP, IIRC, Cruz was the most recent. Rand was another.

In other words, TP candidates are  using their rejection as a springboard into office. It may be rather clumsy, but it seems to work.

To which she replies, "Goodbye, father of two."

Whenever I suggest that people on the right should boycott Farcebook, I invariably get responses saying, "Oh sure, that's _just_ what conservatives need, to have no presence in social media."

I then sit back and wait quietly. It's never long before someone else posts to the effect that they finally let their control slip, and posted an honest conservative rant on FB, and were instantly unfriended by most of their liberal friends and acquaintances, and even family.

Having a social media presence is useful if those in opposition to you are willing to hear what you have to say. The left, in the main, are not thus willing. So alter the calculus accordingly.

You may be correct, Gabe, about the results of this fight.  However, there are certain things I think need to be mentioned.

(1) A sizable faction of the party wanted a fight, and this faction is a very passionate faction.  Stating that a fight at such-and-such a time is not wise is not the correct response; the correct response is to get some sort of fight in.*

(2)  The Democrats and Obama stated firmly that nothing was more valuable to them than ObamaCare and they would not end nor would they delay it.  Again, they are tightly tied to ObamaCare and Republicans are not.  That the fight began as ObamaCare rolled out and exploded is only helpful.  That the clock is ticking on getting people signed up and the problems with ObamaCare run deeper than any really expected.

(3)  There was no guarantee that Obama or Reid would have agreed to a sequestration level one year CR.  Nothing they have ever done indicates that they would keep their word.

(4)  There are three months to get things sorted out.  The leadership must recognize that there is a faction that wants to fight and they have to figure out how to address that and calling them names is not going to be useful, the leadership is going to have to get them something that they want; the fighting faction also has to acknowledge that there are limits to fighting when you only hold one House of Congress and have the MSM arrayed against you - you start from a limited position and you have difficulty getting your message out no matter how good your message or messangers are.  This is basic coalition politics and you have to work with what you have, not what you want.

*"This is not the hill to die on."  Who said anything about dying or about hills?  We want you to pick a fight somewhere and get something  What is wrong with a leadership that can't be bothered to do a little plotting and see what they can pick off.  You do know that politics is filled with theater, so Act like you're trying, at least.

Sheesh, I'm just an amateur observer and I'm the one trying to think more than one move ahead.

srs....

Posted by: Reality Man at October 18, 2013 08:44 AM (Cs9Ps)

Boehner, and most of the rest of the republicans, wouldn't be "caving" on immigration, as they all favor amnesty.  They are just looking for a way to do it and trick the base into believing that a) had no choice and/or b) didn't actually pass amnesty.

Amnesty is another one of those issues demonstrating that the GOP establishment does not want what the base wants.  For whatever dimwitted reason (amnesty will not help the GOP one iota with Latinos, in fact it will likely hurt as illegals gain citizenship and begin to vote) the GOP believes that amnesty will help it win elections.  Like the DNC, the GOP does not care about what is good for the country, they care about winning elections and gaining power.

Which is why we need to stop supporting the GOP altogether.  Let the dems have it all, they will destroy it and a weakened GOP will be easier to take over and remake as conservative.  It's not like we are going to accomplish anything conservative in the next 10 years with the GOP anyway, so we may as well let Dems take full ownership of the catastrophe that is coming.

The GOP is not going to repeal Obamacare (at best, if the GOP wins the WH, house and Senate in 2016, they will "reform" Obamacare), the GOP is not going to actually cut spending, the GOP is not going to actually reform entitlements, the GOP is not going to reduce the size of gov't, the GOP is not going to enforce the border any more than it ever has.  If the GOP wins all in 2016, the best we can hope for is slightly slowing the growth and cost of gov't.

So what is the point of supporting the GOP?  They want kick conservatives out of the party, let's beat them to the punch and leave the party.

Then, in 10 or 20 years, when the GOP is reduced to almost nothing, we come back and take it over.  We have been working on changing the GOP from within for about 40 years or longer now, and we have achieved almost nothing.  It is time to try a different tack.  Allow the GOP to become weakened and malnourished by conservatives not donating money to the GOP, or votes, or time. Starve the beast.

Yes there is.

Here in SC Graham is in trouble.

Prior to this latest round of "fuck you wingnutz" I was content simply to fire a shot across the bow.

ie primary them and if we lost then to back them to the hilt.

The thing is I was in Indiana last year and that is decidedly a one way street.

Dick Dick Lugar showed party loyalty from the Moderates is "we are a party when I win and you can go fuck yourself if I lose."

Not a problem.

Primary Graham and if Graham wins back the democrat.

I think the preferred alternative is they should be dismembered.

Was reading some comments yesterday on that story about the 15-year-old orphan who got himself a used suit and went to a church to ask that the congregation help him find a family to adopt him, and there were not an insignificant number blasting "Christians" for encouraging junkies and otherways shitty parents to give birth instead of doing the humane and decent thing and killing the babies.  This seems like a really nice kid--and he's to be taking more agency in his life than most TFG-voting adults, for fuck's sake--and they're flat out telling him he would be better off dead.

I don't think a few hit TV shows are going to turn around a society this sick.

338 "Obama's trump card over everything was likability. The Tea party must be able to do the same. " I call BS. There was nothing likable about Obama all through this episode. His Rump card was contol of the press. Ted Cruz was initially successful because his fillibuster allowed him to use CSPAN to go around the press. The press also provided him with free advertising for his address to the nation. It appears that the fillibuster has to be used raise the points you wish to communicate to the nation. The problem with the shutdown was that the White House and the Dems knew all they had to do was ride it out and eventually the RNC and its puppets would realise they were jeapordising their cocktail party invitations and fold. The next Speaker needs to be a Teaparty member. And he or she needs to get the ball rolling on reveresing spending trends before becoming used to Washington.

339 If the sequester, something they didn't think up (the White House did) and almost accidentally fell into, is the best they can do, do we really care if it goes away or not? If the Republicans can't find enough fight in them to stand up and demand more than that because they've already surrendered in their minds, it is time we replace them. Winning elections is great and all if you actually do anything useful afterward, but that seems to be as far as the Republicans have thought, since their only actual interest is sitting at the foot of the table so they can stuff the scraps in their pockets. The Democrats on the other hand are now pretty much openly calling for the imprisonment and execution of anyone who disagrees with them on public forums. Yeah, I think we need more Cruzes and less "tactics" dreamed up by consultants and aides while they collect enormous paychecks. thanks. Telling people they need to "learn" from this is fine, but you took the wrong lesson.

"But President Barack Obama pulled him aside for a grilling. Obama wanted to know why they were in the second day of a government shutdown that the speaker had repeatedly and publicly pledged to avoid.

“John, what happened?” Obama asked, according to people briefed on the Oct. 2 conversation.

“I got overrun, that’s what happened,” Boehner said."

So he told sheepishly told the president that the shutdown was a mistake two days into it.  That's how you win concessions alright.

354 The frequency of the "stabbed in the back" meme predicts rough times for the GOP going forward. I mean you guys know where that term became infamous right? You really want to be at that level of paranoia? The enemy gets a vote, (and in this case a veto too!) - you guys must be imagining that we don't have a Senate and a President, if you think that we could have fought just a little harder and won. You do get why the President refused to negotiate, right? Because he could do that and win. Yeah, yeah, the media. That's a given. You have to work that into your plan. Seriously, can the people freaking out about being stabbed in the back please calm down. You got everyone to do it your way. The result was a draw. We might lose even more. Then you will pout and stay home and not vote cuz no one is pure enough for you. 40 year old virgins.

355 Listen doofuses who keep saying Gabe says we should negotiate with McCain or whoever...Gabe never said that. YOUR PLAN REQUIRED NEGOTIATION, NOT HIS. WTF? You think you can delay or defund Obamacare? You need the Senate and the Prezzy...thus your plan requires negotiation with Reid and Obama. Good luck. If we want to use the debt ceiling again, the best way would not be to talk about Obamacare, but simply refuse to pass a debt limit increase and demand spending cuts. That is one area that Obama and the Senate can do nothing about - no need for negotiations at all.

"We"?  No sexypig, do not include me in your royal "we".

I want nothing to do with anyone who would join the enemy to defeat Conservatives.

I'll take the "40 year old Virgins" over your commie sluts anyday.

357 @Pam...Tom Coburn is not a commie slut.

Posted by: sexypig at October 18, 2013 09:53 AM (dZQh7)

358 Hey everybody...Tom Coburn is a commie slut because he didn't want to use the debt ceiling to defund Obamacare. LOL. I consider myself in the Tea Party, but if we have check our sanity in at the door and commit banzai human wave attacks doomed to failure "cuz otherwise we aren't pure enough" then you will lose people like me. Actually, I was okay with giving this strategy a shot, but it was a long shot, and it failed. No biggie. Stop claiming you were "stabbed in the back." The clock ran out, that's all.

359 Somebody used a football analogy yesterday.

The defund thing may have been a Hail Mary pass, but there's really no chance for it to succeed if the WR's are batting down the ball and offensive lineman are sacking the QB.

That seems a lot more accurate than your characterization of us as insane.

360 It is a GOOD thing that Gabe writes here. He has a pragmatic view of the politics involved in the issues we fight for. News flash: America is not overwhelmingly in love with the Tea party. -------- Good god, shut up. We aren't children. We aren't idiots. We understand how politics works, probably more than you do. Stop lecturing and try to listen.

361 I wrote off Lowry and Goldberg, and NR in general, after they disowned John Derbyshire for having the temerity to speak truthfully about race relations in this country. I continue to make an exception for the indispensable Mark Steyn. You can listen to the Upper West Side suckups all you like, Gabe, but as far as I'm concerned, the pair of them can piss off.

362 Still an awful lot of denial in this thread.

I still want the defunders to tell me which 22 Democratic Senators were going to vote to override the budget veto that was promised in order for the defund language to become law.

The numbers matter, if "winning" is a goal.  Blame McCain and the handful of squeamish Republicans all you want, but the plan was never even close to achieving anything other than a GOP party split on the matter.

Which is what the separatists (not Tea Partiers exactly, of which I consider myself one but those who have a vested interest in a party crack up to further their own ends,) are really after.

Tom "the myth" Coburn, really?

Show me where Coburn has accomplished ANY of his so-called goals?  When was he ever on the Senate floor for 21 hours?  When has he ever filibustered a bill to eliminate a fraud filled program?

Last time he was in the news he was joining the "gang" of Six to add another trillion dollars to your family's debt.

Not to mention his slamming of Cruz's efforts right out of the box, and his whining to the press about Rush.

He has said from the beginning that he wants nothing to do with the Tea Party, prompting his leftwing media buds to give him lots, and lots, of good press.

Epic waste of a Senate seat.

364

The GOP spilt from their base decades ago, their collusion with the Dems/MSM against the Tea Party has been going on since the beginning.

It was just so pronounced this time that everyone is finally seeing them for exactly what they are, dead, as a political party they are useless, and counterproductive to Conservatives.

This is the opposite of denial, this is finally the truth about the GOP on parade.

365 Cruz & Lee are the only ones that actually tried to do something to rid us of TFGcare. They vowed to do what ever they could and in my eyes, they are the only two senators worth keeping. Posted by: CarolT at October 18, 2013 07:40 AM (z4WKX) -------- Hey, Vitter kicked ass.

367 "One mo' once," as Count Basie used to say... simply because there are still those few mulish, willfully obdurate GOP Gollums remaining who steadfastly refuse to see the unvarnished and inarguable political truth:

No political party has ever, E-V-E-R achieved electoral success by warring, spitefully and continually, against its own voting base.

You [the GOP] need their [the base's] votes to win office.  You need their votes to *hold* office.

Bald fact:  you need *them* more than they need YOU.

You work harder on Hillary's behalf, daily, than Huma Abedin.

368 @109 Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing - Thank you. It's not a sad story to me any more, though. It's 27 years of reinforcement, knowing that life can be tough and then get better. The Republicans need to learn this lesson. Screw the polls that somehow always sound different from everyone I know.
