Day 2.

In the history of clumsy attempts to use Washington Monument syndrome, Obama's has to be the most clumsy. Here is the National Park Services' excuse for barricading the World War II Memorial: lack of CPR-trained staff and lack of maintenance crews. Our WWII heroes aren't letting him get away with it.

Yesterday, it was veterans from Iowa and Mississippi. (Read about the Mississippi group's homecoming, courtesy BenK). Today, veterans from Missouri and from Chicago will arrive. If you're in the D.C. area and happen to be not working, hie thee down to the Mall and talk to these guys. The Missouri groups are going to be there around 11am.

Tomorrow, it'll be a group of veterans from the Quad Cities, who have also declined to be turned away by Obama.

So where is all this going? Today, the House will again try and pass its mini-CRs on specific items. These three mini-CRs were defeated yesterday, but the House is reportedly going to take a second swing at them, this time under a rule allowing a majority vote. Sen. Reid says he won't take them up even if the House passes them.

House Republicans are getting the sense that this whole thing could stretch on until we hit the debt ceiling impasse around October 17.

“We’re in this fight. This is the moment. We all talk about doing something for our kids and our grandkids. If you want to do something for them, now is the time. We have to work together and win this fight,” Boehner told members, according to a Republican in the room.

I still think this was poor strategy (and poor logic, too), that the debt ceiling fight was the way to go, and all the insults in the world haven't changed my mind. Well, it's looking pretty likely we'll get to try both! Allah had a noteworthy non-Eeyore post yesterday looking at political winners and losers in this fight. The winners: Sen. Paul and Govs. Christie, Walker, and Bush. I'd add Gov. Jindal to that.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, October 02, 2013.  On this day in 1950 the Peanuts comic strip debuted. The strip ended Feb 14, 2000 but is still being printed as "reruns".  The strip ended because Charles Schulz died on Feb 12, 2000 at the age of 77.  He was doing what he liked, and let me tell you young whippersnappers, that is damned rare.  Now get off my lawn.

2 The House of Representatives tried but failed to pass three emergency funding bills Tuesday, amid much political finger pointing by both parties in the wake of the potentially drawn out stalemate over the budget.
The three measures were aimed at reopening parks and monuments, continuing veteransÂ’ benefits and allowing the municipal government of the District of Columbia to function.

And here is why they failed to pass:

The failed measures were treated by House GOP leaders as suspension bills, meaning they needed a two thirds majority to pass.

It would not have made it by Hairy the Pederast anyway.  They have no intention of doing anything until they milk the MFM for all its worth.  And why the fk or we still funding the DC "Municipal" government?  Didn't they become a "city" to call their own shots?  Don't they have that non-voting scrunt who is paid to sit on committees and rant constantly against Republicans and for communism?

And WTF strategy is calling them something that needed 2/3 vote to pass?  It means the GOP leadership did not want it to pass.

7 Must read article from the liberal CSM.  I was struck by two things here.  First read the groups who are exempted from Obamacare.  It will make your blood boil.  Second look at the bald statement that if you have no insurance you are responsible for all your healthcare costs.

Yes, I am sure that will work right up until the first illegal migrant hit the ER for help with the flu or to deliver a baby.  Note that illegals are exempted.  Of course, that may be good because they would certainly qualify for "free" insurance.

44 Have any of you read that Kindle Daily Deal sci-fi book: "City of Truth" by James Morrow? It sounds promising. Truth reigns supreme in the city-state of Veritas. Not even politicians lie, and weirdly frank notices abound—such as warning: this elevator maintained by people who hate their jobs: ride at your own risk. In this dystopia of mandatory candor, every preadolescent citizen is ruthlessly conditioned, through a Skinnerian ordeal called a “brainburn,” to speak truthfully under all circumstances. Jack Sperry wouldn’t dream of questioning the norms of Veritas; he’s happy with his life and his respectable job as a “deconstructionist,” destroying “mendacious” works of art—relics from a less honest era. But when his adored son, Toby, falls gravely ill, the truth becomes Jack’s greatest enemy. Somehow our hero must overcome his brainburn and attempt to heal his child with beautiful lies. Alternately hilarious and moving, City of Truth thoughtfully explores the pitfalls inherent in any attempt to engineer a perfect society.

77 Handwriting (especially cursive) is harder on the developing hands/fine motor skills than typing. One of the most common 504 accomodations is to allow kids with fine motor issues to type instead of write (they also use scribes, but most kids who are self conscious prefer computers, and it's cheaper than paying an an aide)

79 35 I'm still waiting for someone to give me a cogent explanation for how any of this can turn into an achievable net win for our side. What circumstances would make the Democrats fold? A long-term shutdown will most probably have minimal effect on GOP constituencies but a greater effect on the Democrats. And let's remember we are pursuing Gabe's 'sensible' approach of a one-year delay. And after that, a CR passed with no exemptions for anyone, a very popular position across the political spectrum. Democrats are fatally overconfident. They believe they cannot lose under any circumstances, and it is making them do crazy things like shutter the WW2 memorial.

I've never cared for Krazy Kat, though I give WR Hearst props for continuing to run the strip even when his papers wanted to cut it loose.  Herriman did a strip before Kat called Stumble Inn, about the crazy lodgers of a hotel, which I think is very funny.  The first collection of the strips is coming out later this year.

I liked Peanuts right up until the "Red Baron" sequences, which is where I think the strip jumped the shark.  To me, the first five or so years were the best.  Pogo had about ten good years, IMO.

Early Mutt and Jeff, Thimble Theater / Popeye and Polly and Her Pals are also faves of mine.

91 Thanks Vic  ( and Gabe ).   My take is, this is about fighting back.  If the GOP didn't fight on the CR to get whatever they can regarding some relief on Obamacare, the base would be livid.  I know because count me in the base that has been livid since 2010.

2nd, to say the real fight should be on the debt limit, Obama is playing scorched earth here and would have no problem either defaulting ( because he knows not what he is doing OR wants to cause the damage )  OR I think it entirely possible for Barry to just start doing more shit illegally and force the GOP into a Constitutional crisis if they try to call him on it.

He is actively daring the GOP to impeach him.  I think he wants it.  He wants all this division and the rankor.  Barry is a community organizer surrounded by other radicals.

The GOP is in a largely shitty position..  might as well fight back and take the hit for being principled.

92 I started keyboarding in 6th grade, away back in the dark ages of the mid '80s. That was the first year our school had PCs. Every elementary student, except kindergarteners, had to do the same. Our superintendent felt that having solid computing skills was going to be what students would need to get jobs and made it mandatory. At 40, and as someone who spends all day on a PC typing, I am grateful for his way of thinking and still don't suffer at all from carpal tunnel. We also did have to take typing in A9th grade on those giant IBM Selectrics too. A, S, D, F, J, K, L, ;...

I won over 500$ sunday when my 3's made a set and cracked Aces on the flop and beat another guy with junk representing an Ace high flush.

Sometimes you make your set, and, yes, sometimes the other guy isn't bluffing, either. But you can't win if you don't play. Waiting around for a straight flush because you think the other guy always has a full house just means you have lost before you ever began. And in this game, you have to play every round. The blinds and antes are high and getting higher.

"Community organization" is all he knows. Keep in mind that most community organizers get what they want because either the organizers have friends in higher places (state or federal government that leans on the target) or because the target just doesn't have the stomach for the fight. The former doesn't apply here but the latter certainly does, so the only way for the good guys to prevail is to be strong and ignore the media because I don't get the sense that the public really cares that much. The media and the DC GOP certainly are consumed by it, but it feels like the real people out here in America consider it to be a big joke.

Apparently the truly smart thing to do was to delay the delay fight.  Always need to wait for the next battle to fight.  Retreat to the next hill.

Mike Hendrix over at Cold Fury smacks the dog-eating crackhead right in the face.  I'd give real folding money to any GOPer who had the stones to read this on the floor of the Senate:

Another wonderful aspect of the WW2 Memorial Tea Party that I was just musing on is this: the reason Ogabe and Pals miscalculated so badly here is that they expected these men to respond like their sniveling voter base would: by whining and crying over how they couldnÂ’t get into the memorial because of the howwible Wepubbicans and their shutdown, weeping and wailing that Somebody Must Do Something! and then waiting for the government to save them like good little Wards OÂ’ The State should. That would have given the regime a great photo op, something for the Ministry of Propaganda to capture on camera and run on every news outlet in the country excepting, perhaps, Fox.

The resulting clamor over the horror of these poor pitiful veterans victimized by Wepubbican Tewwowists would have given them a resounding propaganda victory, highlighted the gruesome damage done by the temporary furlough of a whole slew of useless apparatchiks in departments nobody’s every heard of, and cemented the highly useful illusion that the “shutdown” was anything but an Obama-Reid Production in the minds of ill-informed drones everywhere.

Instead, these doughty fellows flipped ‘em a middle finger, said “FUCK you,” and took matters into their own hands.

In other words, Ogabe was counting on the good, true American spirit having been ground out of us for good, just like he always does. His whole godawful regime is based on exactly that hope and belief, after all, and everything he does relies on it. Then it blew up in his pinched, smarmy face. Instead of teaching Those People a hard lesson, the Little Professor got taken to school instead.

Not just yet, you jugeared pussy. Not just yet. You got a ways to go still before youÂ’ve crushed us completely, and with some of us, itÂ’s going to take some doing.

As the Big Guy would say, read the whole thing.

151 Good morning all!

I was a Dick Tracy fan growing up.. and Peanuts, of course.

I loved Calvin & Hobbes in the 90's and still have the re-runs of those as a daily feed on my home page.

As far as the shutdown goes, I think we need to concentrate on a delay of the individual mandate and/or a law that everyone must participate - which would be my choice.  No exemptions!  I think we could get that passed.

As we saw yesterday, Obamacare is here.. defunding or no.  Let's make it work as poorly as we can.  Flood the websites.  Send letters to the editors about how much more your premiums (and out of pocket) would be under Obamacare.  We need some outrage at this piece of shit to make it into the news.

And I'm off to work.. have a good one y'all.

157 De lurking for a sec. I home school my first grader and preschooler. With my oldest we have done formal handwriting lessons every day since we brought him home (in K). He is ambidextrous and so he needed to work on strengthening his writing hand. We have seen nothing but benefits from it. Honestly he needs it because it forces him to slow down and take his time on his work. Ever since we started making him do the handwriting his focus and attention span has improved dramatically. Whenever we put him in front of the computer for exercises (which is rare now) he goes right back to being unfocused and all over the place (typical modern six year old behavior). So I see the benefits of formal handwriting and holding back on the computers for a while.

Just 6.6 percent of EPA employees were not declared non essential. 95 percent of Dept of Education employees are non essential.

If they're non essential, they should not be invited to return to work once the shutdown is over. All these alphabet federal departments need to be looked at, and have their funding adjusted steeply downward to prevent them from ever employing non essential workers, (or engaging in non essential tasks).

Oh, and about the WWII vets....I think the Obumbles admin will come to some sort of agreement to prevent another episode of 'bad optics' from making them look like petty fools.

So we get Gabriel calling names and beating up straw men every morning and we're left with nothing to do but respond in kind. You can't reason the skunk of moronville out of a position he didn't reason himself into. After a whole barrage of bitching and moaning about Cruz, I STILL haven't heard anyone even ATTEMPT to explain why conservatives should not expect Congress and Boehner to exercise the power of the purse. In fact, I haven't heard even one ADMIT that Boehner and the Republicans in the house of Representatives have the POWER to do so. How can we have an honest discussion of strategy when we're being fed BS. Applying Occam's Razor, it's pretty clear that the so called difference in strategy is really a difference in priorities and incentives. The first priority for activist Republicans is to rein in the insane level of taxing and spending before Math becomes the strongest opposition to Democrats (a la Detroit, Newark, etc.) while the PRIMARY goal of establishment Republicans is to maintain and increase their power. What Gabriel and the DC crowd don't seem to understand is that we expect elections to have consequences and after nearly three years of Republicans in Congress going along with Obama's spending it's become obvious that RINO's and RINOB's (Republicans In Need Of guts) are the problem. 172 The closing of the WWII memorial is particularly loathsome when you consider the chain link fencing surrounding the original construction was removed early in recognition of the fact that veterans were dying at the rate of approximately 1100 per day. "Officials said they wanted to open the memorial before the dedication to allow as many visits as possible by World War II veterans -- who are dying at a rate of about 1,100 a day, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission, the project's sponsor. Large tour groups of veterans will begin filing into the memorial early next week. "When I asked some guys about going to the [dedication], they said they didn't want to do that because there'd be too many people," said Sandy Hart, who about a year ago began organizing a tour of the memorial for veterans living near her in western Kentucky. "So I set something up for the beginning of May and I thought, 'I'll see if I can get 10 or 12 people.' " She got a lot more than that -- about 1,000 people heard about the trip and told her they wanted to go. Deaths, strokes, broken hips and other complications have whittled the numbers down slightly, she said, to about 800. More than half of them are veterans of the war, she said, and they will board 17 buses and arrive in Washington on Monday." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A51472-2004Apr28.html

"We will make the call this Friday to determine if the flight is still a go, or if we will have to re-schedule," Armstrong explains. He says they are considering going ahead with the trip even if the government is still on shutdown, but when he called the parks service, he was told they would face arrest. "I said, are you kidding me? You're going to arrest a 90/91-year-old veteran from seeing his memorial? If it wasn't for them it wouldn't be there. She said, 'That's correct sir.'" When Armstrong asked for her name, he says she did not give it to him and then promptly hung up the phone. 99% of veterans on Honor Flights have never had the opportunity to see the memorial that is devoted to their service. Through October, the are over 35,000 veterans scheduled to visit the site, more than 900 in the next five days alone.

181 Typing, 8th grade in the mid-60's. The only skill I learned in school that enhanced my employment opportunities, and did it ever. And I hated grade-school penmanship drills. Nevertheless, some penmanship should be taught -- as a motor-skills enhancer, an art form, and as accompaniment to copy-book headings, which teach morality and spelling, which are the same thing really.

You know, they taught drawing at West Point, until the camera came along. In the mid-19th century, everyone could draw. They called it "rendering," and yes, there were jokes about that, since in the 19th century everyone knew what rendering was, and most people had done it at one time or another.

Remember that in typing class, you sat in a certain kind of chair, the typewriter was on a certain kind of table, and the instructor would harangue you about arm and elbow positioning? Most so-called carpal tunnel and repetitive motion syndrome cases arise from the damnfoolishness of placing a flat keyboard on a writing-height desk, and contorting the body to fit this torturous configuration. Way back then, a lot of people typed all day, all year, and they knew very well that there was a right and a wrong way to do it. We're modern, but stupid.

Has anyone noticed that, with the Memorial case, Obama has shat a giant shit in the punchbowl and then run off on a world tour, so he can watch the fun on TV? It's a major part of his modus operandi. Someone must have taken an overnight poll, though, because he's shortening the trip. Sequester though, not a shutdown.

The vets are planning to put wheelchairs forward, and their battle cry is "Let's Roll." When they execute a sharp column right and head up the Mall, I believe the ground will shake, as it ought. Somebody has the unenviable assignment this morning of emplacing anti-wheelchair barriers on the Ellipse. When that happens, I expect all the memorial statues in the city to rise up and walk, like at the end of Don Giovanni.

190 >>I'm still waiting for someone to give me a cogent explanation for how any of this can turn into an achievable net win for our side. What circumstances would make the Democrats fold? If the endgame is just unconditional surrender by the Republicans three weeks or so from now (seriously, give me a plausible scenario that doesn't end that way), we might as well just fold now and minimize the damage. If you were dumb enough to bet on a pair of 3s in the first place, you don't get a consolation prize for calling all the other guy's bets until he shows his full house. Posted by: suedenim at October 02, 2013 07:07 AM (rr3dQ)<< I love adjectives like "cogent" and "plausible", also "credible", "realistic", "rational", and 'achievable". All of which mean: 'Explain it accepting my biases as true'. For instance, if I suggested that it would be better for Republicans to do everything possible to block Democrat policies, instead of allowing them to pass and going into the next election complaining about Democrat policies, that wouldn't be "plausible". Or if I suggested that a Republican caucus is supposed to develop coordinated action around the promises made when they got elected ,that wouldn't be "credible". Or if I said the Supreme Court affirmed the constitutionality of federal economic regulation in part because the American people are free to elect a House majority that will unilaterally defund a bureaucracy which the Senate and President refuse to vote to dissolve, that would not be "cogent". So I'm sorry, I have no cogent, plausible explanations. Merely sexy, mainstream fun.
