Happy Wednesday.

Sen. Lee gave a heckuva speech yesterday at Heritage, which sounds an awful lot like that Ponnuru and Lowry piece from NR I linked yesterday.

If our generation of conservatives wants to enjoy our own defining triumph, our own 1980 – we are going to have to deserve it. That means sharpening more pencils than knives. The kind of work it will require is neither glamorous nor fun – and sometimes it isn’t even noticed. But it is necessary.

To deserve victory, conservatives have to do more than pick a fight. We have to win a debate. And to do that, we need more than just guts. We need an agenda.

The transcript is here, or you can watch the video here. It's well worth your time.

Also, Ponnuru put up a response to Erickson's criticism.

ICYMI, Ace put up an open thread last night that's full of Obamacare news and links that really should be clicked. Some crazy stuff in there.

3 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, October 30, 2013.  On this day in 1534 Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy making the King head of the Church. (Church of England now).   That continues to this day. In the US this is the Episcopal Church, which was formed after the revolution.  I am assuming that they do not consider the reigning monarch to be the head of their church.

5 Coburn hits the NPS for waste and stuff.  But I like this opening in the story.

Taxpayers shell out $52,000  a year to maintain the home of Black History Month founder Carter Woodson. Yet the tiny, dilapidated row house in northwest Washington D.C., with a "No Trespassing" sign and iron bars blocking the front door and windows hasnÂ’t seen a visitor in the seven years since the National Park Service bought it  for $2.1 million and designated it a National Historic Site.

Let's see, we paid $2.1M for a shack in DC, its boarded up with nobody doing anything to it and it costs us $52K a year for that.  Does anyone not see what this is?  And I'll tell you, it is NOT wasteful spending, or at least that is not all it is.

And one wonders if this is what Teddy Roosevelt had in mind when he established the national parks.

And besides spending millions on a shrine for someone that virtually nobody ever heard of, we are spending millions on a park dedicated to soiled dresses and cigars.

33 "Erickson claims that the point of our essay was to 'tell conservatives to stop fighting until they win'..." Erickson makes some good points now and then but for the most part he comes across more and more as go along to get along republican. The more that people bite from this crap sammich that the Democrats have served up the better the chances are that it will be rejected in totality. The only problem is that with every bite, the healthcare infrastructure, the economy and people who didn't want this suffer. More importantly the federal importantly: the parasite that the federal government has become gets bigger and more entrenched. So far, for the most part only the self-employed (the 'rich') and people on pensions are biting the bullet. Wait until the employer mandate goes into effect. Interestingly enough, congress staffers have been exempted.

"Big government has been like taking a rhinoceros in as a house pet. The problem people like me have with the likes of Lowry and Ponnuru is that they seem to spend their time explaining how to better train the rhinoceros. 40 From The NR response: The problem with his comparison is that it assumes that WFB and Goldwater failed not only to move American politics rightward but even to change the ideological complexion of the Republican party. ItÂ’s a dubious homage, and one that grapples with no evidence at all. So you can only undertake an action when you 'know' what the response will be. I highly doubt WFB and Goldwater knew what was going to happen back then. In other words, we need to trust NR's political instincts and ignore actual policy. This is the major problem with the punditry - they think that they understand human nature well enough to see the future. This astounding arrogance is the real reason the GOP is in the wilderness, not 'purity.'

Morning, erons and eronettes.  Since itfs almost Hallowefen, how about a horror movie story?

During the making of 1942s The Ghost of Frankenstein, Lon Chaney, Jr.* suddenly had a (youfll forgive the joke) brainstorm.  He went to director Erle Kenton and said, gSay, letfs have the movie end with the monster melting right down before your eyes in the fire!h

gFine!h growled Kenton.  gSo what do we start the next Frankenstein with?  A grease spot?h

And herefs a little cheesecake for you - Evelyn Ankers, called gQueen of the Screamersh thanks to her vocal talent. The leading lady of many Universal horror movies during the 1940Œs Ankers was cast with Lon Chaney Jr. not just in The Ghost of Frankenstein, but also in The Wolfman and Son of Dracula.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Chaneyfs real name was Creighton Chaney, but when he signed with Universal (his fatherfs old studio), his name was changed to capitalize on the elder Chaneyfs fame.

And besides that, we have to do more than "win a debate".  Back when the Democrats insisted on nominating lackluster candidates that the public could not stomach we won and got the Bush/Rove combo.

How did that work out?  It destroyed the GOP name and reputation and gave us Obama.

96 To deserve victory, conservatives have to do more than pick a fight. We have to win a debate. And to do that, we need more than just guts. We need an agenda.

Last I checked, conservatism has an agenda. One of the items is repeal Obamacare.

Look - nobody disagrees that to win elections you generally need an agenda and need to win debates.  These are straw-man arguments.

This claim that all we do as conservatives is "pick fights" with "no agenda" is dishonest, it is childish and it is insulting.

Conservative won the debate within the republican party.  this is proven by the fact that all the GOP politicians give lip service to conservatism during election years.

The problem, the reason for the current fights, is that despite this, the GOP does not back up that lip service with any action.

I'm sick of otherwise intelligent people saying stupid things and arguing that conservatives need to "stop just being mad" or "stop just picking fights" or "this is just a stupid fight over tactics".

That's idiotic.  It's insulting. It's dishonest.  What is the GOP's agenda (aside form winning elections)?  They tell us it is the same as the conservative agenda, but once in office, they don't follow through.

Example - name me the republican that ran on passing an amnesty?  Certainly not Rubio.  Not McCain.  You can't name me many.  In fact, you could name far more GOP politicians that ran explicitly against amnesty. Yet the party keeps trying to cram amnesty down our throats in between elections.  So - who is really lying about their agenda?  Who is picking fights?

Same holds true with just about everything.  Spending cuts?  Remember the promises to cut spending?  What happened?

This isn't just conservatives being angry for the sake of being angry.  This isn't an agenda less fight.  This is not a fight over tactics.  It is a fight to make the GOP do what it promises to do during elections.

Those, like Gabriel Malor, who want to claim otherwise - tell us, what is the GOP's true agenda?  Not the one they run on - which we have seen they have no interest in pursuing.  Tell us the true GOP agenda and then explain why we should support it.

These people seem to think that because we are conservative, the GOP is entitled to our vote.  That is not how it works.  If the GOP is having trouble with conservatives, it isn't the conservatives fault.  Conservatives are consumers and have every right to not buy the product the GOP is trying to sell.  Claiming otherwise is asinine.

The GOP has nobody but itself and years of lying to blame for the fact that conservatives don't trust the GOP. This argument that we should somehow blindly trust the GOP is ridiculous.

Yes. I think part of the problem is with people like Gabe, Lowry and Ponnura is they live a cloistered life removed from how most of the conservative base sees the GOP Establishment. That prevents them from seeing you don't win the debate unless you take ***actions*** to convince the public you aren't just gaming them.

It's not enough to say, "things would be sooo much worse if we weren't here to have countered Obama with our incredible 4 dimensional chess," because that sounds like Obama saying the recession would be worse if not for him.

You have to take actions that draw a clear distinction.

So what's going on here?  Are people like Lee going to be assimilated into the GOP collective?  Is he giving in?

Obviously we can't know that yet, but we do know the Mccains of this world, along with their sucking suckerfish NRO types are not going to give up fighting for THEIR agenda.

151 From Mediaite, Fox and Friends this morning.

“That’s the grand design of Obamacare, to squeeze everyone out of their existing plans, to squeeze insurance companies so they have an option to cut and run from the American people and put everyone into the system,” Hasselbeck responded. “Why? Because everyone in the system has to pay for it. So if you don’t have anybody in the system, you got to get them in there. How do you do that? You squeeze them out of their existing situation.”

How sad is it that a half-wit like Elisabeth Hasselbeck has a better read on liberals and the purpose of Obamacare then Bill O'Reilly?

"Steal from productive citizens to give $25K handouts for your Repopulate Detroit plan."

This is what I can't understand.

Presently, Michigan taxpayers spend over $28K per pupil per year in ineffective union dominated public schools.  I proposed taking this money away from the public schools and giving it directly to the parents in a pure voucher.

For some reason, this form of capitalism is impossible to grasp for people here.  Apparently, there is no faith in the free market system and the ability of the private sector to provide options for the kids with these vouchers.  If there are no public schools, most people here can't imagine how kids are educated.

How is it that people can claim to be conservatives but not be able to even conceive of a system where parents make decisions about their children's education?

"To deserve victory, conservatives have to do more than pick a fight. We have to win a debate. And to do that, we need more than just guts. We need an agenda."

I'm going to agree with that statement.  There must be a willingness, a desire to fight.  There also has to be an articulated "Why We Fight."

We cannot counter the MSM's 'Ooooo! Scary Extremists!' without being able to respond - again and again - with a program and why it is better than the Progressives' Edsel.  However an agenda goes nowhere with out the desire to fight and fight and fight again.

Good luck with that.  Even at the local level they're sucking on the fed tit:

IÂ’ve said it before and sadly I will say it again: the next time I praise the Timberlane School Board, someone please hit me with a wet noodle.  Tonight, Oct. 23, in a special meeting, the Timberlane School Board rescinded their vote of last week to recommend that the New Hampshire School Boards Association call for the elimination of the federal Department of Education.  Chairman Collins began the meeting by taking the floor and diving into his own presentation to rebut Mr. BarczakÂ’s presentation of the previous week, for which Mr. Collins was not in attendance.  Mr. Barczak tried to raise a motion to block reconsideration but Mr. Collins refused to cede the floor and continued with his Powerpoint. Afterwards Mr. Barczak countered Mr. CollinsÂ’ points and exceptionally lively discussion ensued.  It should be noted that the special meeting announcement did not provide notice of a reconsideration which, though not strictly required, would have been more forthright.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING
The Timberlane Regional School Board will meet on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 immediately following the 7:00 pm SAU Board meeting at the SuperintendentÂ’s Office, 30 Greenough Road, Plaistow, NH. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss their NHSBA Resolutions voted on at their October 17, 2013 Board meeting.

The word “propaganda” was used numerous times with respect to Mr. BarczakÂ’s material which was highly insulting to him and all those who believe, as I do, that federal involvement in education is a hindrance to achieving our own excellence. One member expressed the opinion that politics should not be part of school board matters to which Mr. Barczak responded that if we donÂ’t change the politics, we canÂ’t change our outcomes, and our outcomes nationally are flat lined academic achievement in the high school level for decades.  Well, Mr. Barczak, it was a fight worth having and my hat is off to you. [See TRSB Votes on Eliminating the DOE for his presentation.]

205 I heard that the SCOAMF is coming to Boston today. Why? To campaign for Obamacare! I never supported Romney because of Romneycare. Now the SCOAMF is coming here, IÂ’m not sure where in Boston he will be. I hope itÂ’s not going to cause the garage to be full or make traffic worse. In March 2008 The Weekly Standard had a writer, Dean Barnett. He wrote almost an entire issue of the magazine, I saved it, because it was so good. Barack Obama The Man & The Myth. Dean had SCOAMF exactly as he is and there was one article that was so funny I almost lost the water I was drinking, it compared TFG to Deval Patrick, same campaign, same campaign managers, same speeches, with a few lines changed. Deval Patrick lied to win, anyone surprised? IÂ’m still waiting 7 years later for the 1,000 extra police on the streets of Boston, lower property taxes, I canÂ’t remember what else he promised because I knew he was full of it and tried to ignore him. Dean wrote one line that was perfect. He was comparing the two as I wrote above, both are Chicago thugs too. The best line of the article was TFG is tall & sleek and Patrick is short & doughy and often sounds like heÂ’s just inhaled helium! ItÂ’s a shame that Dean passed away in the fall of 2008 of CF. I never knew he was sick. I had his email & would send him one when he had written an article that would have me laughing all the time. IÂ’ve got to get myself ready for work & hope SCOAMF doesnÂ’t get in my way today. I hope you all have a nice day. Carol

The problem is that the "theology" is centered around money.  That's not theology, that's business.  I've seen this dynamic up-close-and-personal where the message about faith gets translated at the "user level" to something like, "I believe in God.  God will give me wealth.  Then I give that cash back to God.  Ergo, I am going to Heaven."

YMMV, but it seems to be that mega-churches lend themselves to a shallow faith - one focused on cash.

At the end of the day, I'm with Paul.

Consequently, since Colbert bases his Colbert Report personality on BOR, it also doesn't matter what is being said when the way it is being said is so annoying.

210 Can someone here inject some free will into my college age daughter to get her ass moving so she doesn't miss her train back to campus?

If you're a hard-core Calvinist, her missing the train (or not) would be foreordained by God.

211 ItÂ’s a shame that Dean passed away in the fall of 2008 of CF. I never knew he was sick. I had his email & would send him one when he had written an article that would have me laughing all the time.

Posted by: CarolT at October 30, 2013 08:50 AM (z4WKX)

I had dinner with Dean one night at the Bertucci's at Alewife Station in Cambridge.  We were going to start a "fact check" of the Boston Globe like what Ira Stoll was doing with the New York Times at the time (this was late 2004 I think).  But it never got off the ground for a bunch of reasons, one of which was his CF.

In person he was exactly the kind of guy you would have thought he would be from his writing.  Whip smart, funny, but still low-key.  He was a guy you wanted to have a beer with.  He is missed.

212 @216.....if she doesn't get moving I am gonna arrange for her to meet God in person.

213 Posted by: Steve in Greensboro at October 30, 2013 08:50 AM (ZG3Fa) I subscribed to NRO for a few years but then cancelled when “the Editors” bashed Newt in all red letters on the website. Newt was the current favorite, of all of the ABR (anyone but Romney) candidates. There was no need to trash Newt like they did, Newt was the new flavor of the week or month in late 2011. Now that I’m thinking of it, they though Huntsman was a better choice and of course, Romney. That was a great idea, Romney, push Mitt and take TFGcare off the things that he could fight against.

214 The Mormon take on the question is that Satan wanted to deny humankind free will so they would have no choice but to worship God, and human society would be ideal and utopian; nothing bad would ever happen.

But God saw Free Will as essential to human progression; the ability of our souls to advance in knowledge and wisdom. So, He rejected Satan's plan and granted his children Free Will; knowing that some would abuse it and this abuse would result in suffering. But He knew, ultimately, there would be no other way for us to progress.

Wouldn't that then make God the cause of evil?

217 I've always felt that people who condemn God for allowing suffering don't really want God, they want Santa Claus.

220 I am assuming that they do not consider the reigning monarch to be the head of their church. -Vic One of the fun things about being able to say I was raised in the Episcopal Church was, nobody among theology arguers ever quite found the right grounds for attack. Plus, there was no worry of pride in one's sect's origins....

No, because Mormons believe that evil lies in preventing the exercise of Free Will (Satan's Plan).  In a sense, one could broadly define evil as abusing or exploiting others for personal material benefit.

Posted by: Sean Bannion at October 30, 2013 08:55 AM (JpC1K) Thanks for the confirmation Sean. I was a reader of the magazine and no one to him, but when I would send him an email, heÂ’d respond. He was a great writer with a better sense of humor. I always plan to cancel subscription but they have a very good website. Do you live in or near Boston? I live six miles away from Boston. I know where that BertuccisÂ’s is, our office was in Waltham for almost nine long years and Route 2 was the easiest way to come home. I would take the exit before Alewife unless I wanted to go to Whole Foods.

I'm originally from Mass. though.

226 Yeah, here's your next best hope. The shock team A listers that got "voted" in.  And they're going to beat back the hordes of the gibsmedat legion, push back and re-take all those concessions with...  a Sharpened Pencil.  Because fighting is, sweaty. And stinks of testosterone.  And its so, well, Mean Spirited.  And we all know that a Sharpened Pencil trumps those necessities that were once luxuries in the game of Rock, Riot, Entitlement Mob.

The fire will rectify all these wrongs.  Let the fire sweep though. Soon, please!

227 3 Vic writes:  "...On this day in 1534 Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy making the King head of the Church. (Church of England now). That continues to this day. In the US this is the Episcopal Church, which was formed after the revolution. I am assuming that they do not consider the reigning monarch to be the head of their church."

Most Episcopalians indeed hold King Barack I (the Petulant) to be the head of the Episcopal Church, although they would consider it low-class and un-nuanced to say so in such explicit terms.

Until we obtain Republican majorities in the Senate AND the House AND a Republican Administration in the White House, the Establishment GOP will insist it is premature to achieve the conservative agenda, because it would jeopardize the effort to attain that concentration of power.

As a matter of history, the last time the Republicans had that concentration of power, in 2005, the Establishment GOP said it was imprudent to achieve the conservative agenda, because it would jeopardize the effort to preserve that concentration of power.

The same people are in the saddle.  They're telling the same lies.  They are not fit to govern.  Their servants do not deserve to be elected.
