Day 7.

DOD is recalling most of its civilian workforce to work based upon the language of the military funding authorization passed last week.

ICYMI, on Saturday the House approved 407-0 a bill granting back pay to furloughed federal workers. The Senate hasn't picked it up yet, but I imagine that's just a matter of time. The GOP strategy here is to paint Sen. Reid as the obstructionist in Congress. This has the benefit of being true.

New York Magazine has a long, amazing interview with Justice Scalia.

Speaking of amazing, there are a number of pretty damned important cases in front of the Supreme Court this term. This calls for a listicle.

If you haven't got the podcast yet this week, we had John McCormack of the Weekly Standard on to talk about shutdown effects and shutdown strategy, among other things. Also, Rick Tempest told us the difference between cobloggers and underbloggers.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Monday, October 07, 2013.  On this day in 1968 the MPA formed the letter guide rating system for motion pictures.  It has been a real farce ever since.

This person was aware of the facts and is regularly exposed to non-MSM viewpoints (even seeks them out, I think). I think he thought the non-MSM view of TFG was deliberately exaggerated. He never saw what a petty piece of shit the jugeared bastard son of a whore really is until last week, and once that sunk in, suddenly seeing the broader implications for the first time is both frightening and infuriating.

One of the titles that might be amusing is The Dirty Parts of the Bible.
http://tinyurl.com/ltk7jtr

It's 1936, and Tobias Henry is stuck in the frozen hinterlands of Michigan. Tobias is obsessed with two things: God and girls.

Mostly girls, of course.

But being a Baptist preacher's son, he can't escape God.

When his father is blinded in a bizarre accident (involving hard cider and bird droppings), Tobias must ride the rails to Texas to recover a long-hidden stash of money. Along the way, he's initiated into the hobo brotherhood by Craw, a ribald vagabond-philosopher. Obstacles arise in the form of a saucy prostitute, a flaming boxcar, and a man-eating catfish. But when he meets Sarah, a tough farm girl under a dark curse, he finds out that the greatest challenge of all is love.

I  think a lot of people made the logical leap that since the left had created a hugely inaccurate caricature  of Booshitler, that this must have been the right's version of Obama.

76 I read that Dept of Defense recalled workers, from another website, because Lockheed Martin decided to furlough in response to TFG. LM told 3,000 not to bother to come in, and then TFG or maybe Hagel decided to get most of DOD workers back and LM called back 3,000 employees. I think it’s great that private companies could bow them into submission. I am not a fan of Trump, but he was on Fox & Friends, he said McCain started this off saying “we cant’ win.” I missed that one. Wacko Bird Juan McCain has to shut up, no one cares what he has to say. Disagree. What it's time for is enforcing the laws set by the current Constitution. Put Choom Boy, the alleged serial pederast and the Human Chee-To in prison for a few decades, and compliance with the law will show a remarkable uptick.

All a do-over will accomplish is giving the populace a chance to make the same friggin' mistakes all over again. And, given the mental acuity, education and political beliefs of a vast majority of the citizens, a massive shit-storm of new mistakes will be added, too.

85 Better late than never. Let's pray it's not too late. This is the most helpful thing coming of this shutdown, in my opinion. It is forcing people on the correct side of the divide to reevaluate what it is that they believe and why. The left is going to be the left. They may as well be a force of nature. Given any issue or situation, anyone with even slightly below average intelligence should be able to figure out what the left is going to do. Facts and reality be damned, the marxists are going to do what they have programmed and brainwashed themselves to do. The fight that matters is on the right, and the fight is about how to frame what is happening and reexamining what tactics should be on or off the table. To be crystal clear, I am not talking about violence or anything outside of the law so long as civilization holds. But I am talking about giving as good as we're getting, and understanding that Mr. Punish-Your-Enemies has set the bar about as low as it can go.

87 The recess appointment case is huge.  This goes along with the point that the scorched earth strategy being employed by the Dems presumes that they will never lose power.  You know, I grew up with a Dem controlled Congress and people who assumed that was the way it was always going to be.   Not so much.  If a President with a ( D ) after his name can do it, so can a President with an ( R ).   I don't think the Left would like that one little bit.

As far as the consent of the governed thing Purp posted about below, that's actually terrifying.  It goes along with the recess appointments, actually.  When people perceive, correctly, that we are being ruled, not governed, and that those doing the ruling have no concern for the rule of law, well, why should I?

This is why I have no issue with people hauling off the Barrycades.  Fuck you, NPS and every single ranger who is enforcing the "closing" of open air memorials.   Fuck you.  That's my park and my land and my memorial and, no, I do not recognize for one single solitary instant your "authority" to close them.

This will end badly.

Or can not fathom how they will find the money to pay for insurance and still eat. 128 Marbury involved the only act of Congress Marshall ever helped overturn (a Judiciary Act that enabled Marbury to go directly to the Court to get a withheld JP commission awarded instead of first going through political channels). Had he not done so, the Act would have expanded the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court under Art III. So while, yes, it's true that Marshall got the judicial review ball rolling, I don't think it can be fairly said that he was an usurper when the only time he ever overturned an act of Congress had the effect of limiting his own power. Then again, what do I know, I think saucy prostitutes, flaming boxcars and man-eating catfish are funny.

168 So, they get unemployment insurance payments AND back pay after they return to work? Posted by: Cicero Kid at October 07, 2013 08:11 AM (DHQv9) Oh yeah. They had a guy with his family on the news yesterday talking about how the shutdown has thrown him and his family into financial hardship. If you are six days away from financial hardship because you miss one check, although i'm not sure they even missed a check, you're not real responsible.

Posted by: Oldsailors Poet Palin/Bolton 2016 at October 07, 2013 08:10 AM (XIxXP) Isn't the amber alert system all automated, anyway, once a call is taken and info put into the program? So Obama's ordering call screening 911 for who counts and who doesn't speak to the operator? "Make life as difficult for Americans as possible." THE OBAMA DOCTRINE

172 Great Hynns of the faith- "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy" by Frederick Faber: "The author of this hymn Frederick William Faber, was raised as a Huguenot, but went to Oxford and was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1837. He then came to know John Henry Newman, the famous Catholic priest (and later Cardinal). Under Newman's influence, Faber was re-ordained as a Catholic priest. Faber was an admirer of good poetry, and became good friends with the poet, William Wordsworth. The two of them would often take long walks together in the mountains. Knowing the power of hymns in the Protestant tradition, Faber wanted to make hymn-singing more important in the Catholic tradition. He wrote a number of hymns, of which this and "Faith of Our Fathers" are the best known today. "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy" celebrates the wideness of God's mercy –– "like the wideness of the sea." It celebrates God's welcome for the sinner and the "good" person alike. It reminds us that "the love of God is broader than the measure of our mind" –– and therefore encourages us to broaden the measure of our own love so that it might be more like God's love. And, finally, it calls us to 'rest upon God's word' so that 'our lives (might be) illumined by the presence of our Lord.'" Richard Neill Donovan The music and words: http://cyberhymnal.org/htm/t/h/e/therwide.htm "There is welcome for the sinner......There is mercy with the Savior.....there is healing in His Blood." Grace and peace in the wonderful name of Jesus Christ.

Sarc off. Hats off to India. A handful of years ago, watching BBC documentary interviews with India's government and national leaders, the point made was very thoughtful, that despite the ugly experience of being abused by the British Empire, that the efficiency of the governmental system that India experienced "as" part of Britain provided a smooth transition beyond independence, into the stable governance that India is today, bureaucracy providing jobs for so many people. //yes, that "beneficence" of bureaucracy for those it employees -- the very point grating our nerves at the moment, that the US taxpayers are paying each employee not only the salary, but benefits to compound benefits upon benefits with no end regardless of performance, regardless of need/desire for a particular bureau/agent...
