— Gabriel Malor Happy Monday.
Obama's Education Secretary Arne Duncan had comments on Common Core teaching standards this weekend, including, on the one hand, that the biggest threat to Common Core is "we lose the hearts and minds of those in the middle" and, on the other, "It's fascinating to me that some of the pushback is coming from, sort of, white suburban moms who—all of a sudden—their child isn't as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isn't quite as good as they thought they were." Self-awareness FAIL, jackwad.
Sen. Claire McCaskill says Clinton won't even have a primary challenger in 2016. I'm sure McCaskill's colleague, Sen. Heap Big Wampum, disagrees.
In healthcare news, one insurer has dropped thousands of doctors from its network, leaving seniors, especially, wondering whether they'll get to keep their doctors even if they get to keep their plans.
National Journal's Josh Kraushaar thinks that if Obama can't figure his shit out soon, even Democrats will be calling for Obamacare repeal before Obama's term is done.
And the Cheney sisters are having their first public spat over marriage. The most recent polling in the Wyoming senate race found Sen. Enzi up 52 points over challenger Liz Cheney.

On this day in 1883 Standard Time was put into use in the United States. Prior to that all the railroads (and local people) used local railroad time. This led to a lot of inconsistencies. Later on we put in the fraudulent Daylight Savings Time, which saves nothing.

The hoodlum thug got 18 months for killing someone. Where's the Trevon outrage here? The same type of shit is going on with the flash mobs all over the US robbing stores and attacking people in malls and parks.

To hell with it, I say. Digital? *spit* They have no chance of competing anymore with the new fangled (aka unwatchable) stuff. Go all out and make it a thing. Stick with celluloid and screen the great stuff nobody shows anymore. Make it a nostalgia fest. Work the drive in as an retro trip. If that won't work, then might as well spare the expense of a pointless changeover.

I had to put my daughter back in shitty public schools at the 8th grade because the private school didn't go any higher than that. I asked them why they didn't have classes up through HS level and the response was they couldn't get enough parents.
Almost all the parents in this area were more interested in their children playing football or being a cheerleader than they were in education.

I don't think that made a bit of difference. What has actually killed the drive in (both normal and porno) is the advent of first video tape movies, then DVD.
Then the adults did their smoking and drinking at home. And you didn't have to worry about how much beer you drank.

And with Bill deBlasio as our new mayor, I expect a lot more.

When I used to drive trucks, I would drive into NYC a couple of times a week. Pretty much hit Brooklyn at least once a week. For a few weeks late 1999 I started seeing the Hassidic Jews walking around with baseball bats and it was weird. Someone told me they were getting tired of getting the crap beat out of them. Maybe they need to do it again.

But the biggest, closest and most successful of them lost its screen to a tornado last night. History has shown this is often the end. I don't know how the insurance works (our new national motto).
Another thing that has hurt drive-ins is the number of newer cars that can't be turned on without their headlights coming on. And you need the power on, to use the FM audio feed, since those cute speaker-stalks (and the Electric In-A-Car Heater) are long gone. Kids used to run to the concession stand, and bail into those stalks at full speed, a cause of much hilarity.
The biggest thing, though, is light pollution. One strip-mall next door, and you can't see the movie. And then, the real-estate valuation comes into play.

Are they having to operate 7 nights a week? What's the population like? With a large enough punters base, it's surprising how many will show up to catch something on the big screen that they wouldn't normally get a chance to. If it's a couple of great flicks, for one night only, it can pack out. Prepare the schedule and keep it changing... no second shots, they'll come to see the once in a blue moon screening. Go specialist. That sort of thing packs out in other places, but big city joints, I guess. Masybe they're looking down the barrel there. Can't imagine how they can compete these days.

The Drive In is not yet dead. At least in the outskirts of NW Houston they're not. Converted cow pasture has 2 screens and center snack bar which stays packed throughout the evening (reasonable prices, good quality and sizes, you know - value).
Each screen shows 2 movies a night, usually one of them is first run, paired like fine wine to an entree. Saw the newest Thor opening weekend there paired with Gravity. A mere $6 per person.
Some nights they go retro and will show old blockbusters for $20 a car load.
The place is packed every night it is open. They have DLP screens. If you want to get the center spots in the first 4 rows, better get in line at least 30 minutes before the gates open.
It's a great place for a date night. The only downside is getting my dates (women of a certain age) up and into the bed of my F-150 with anything approaching style and dignity. But once they've settled into the plush, padded, pillow-strewn and verry comfy bed (like a sultan's tent), we're golden.

Around these parts, and in the time period when the drive-ins started to go away, they were all about the underaged clientele. Adults stayed away in droves (pun intended).
So you're right, when tapes and dvds became available, there were fewer people flocking to drive-ins, but even more than that, they didn't have to!
More and more, parents will let their teenage spawn rut like animals, in the comfort of their own home. It's "safer" that way, and since you can't stop them...

He was elected to the Senate because it was his turn, has made a career out of taking "safe" conservative positions, but when it comes to the Washington feeding frenzy, he's lining up at the trough, right alongside the rest of them.
I'm done with that. I'm not going to be used. Roy is never getting my vote again. I've told him so, but I doubt he cares. He's the right kind of Republican for Missouri. Not very different from the right kind of Democrat like Claire McCaskill.

DangerGirl, you have my prayers. I used to drink too much. Two or 3 glasses of wine a night just to relax. This was 7 days a week, and I knew I shouldn't be doing it. Waking up with a headache and a general feeling of ick just make me realize I needed to cut it out. It took a while, because I kinda craved that relaxation at night, but over the course of a few months, I weened myself away from all that. I usually average about 1 glass of wine a week now, and even then, I wake up feeling bad from a headache. I haven't felt the desire to even have it for a long time. You can do it. Just be patient and kind with yourself.

I found that when quitting cigarettes I had to go one day at a time. Every time I got an urge for a cigarette (which was frequent) I would say to myself "I can hold out until tomorrow". When tomorrow came I would repeat that until I had a string of tomorrows.
After a month the urges came less frequent. After 6 months they were few. After a year they were rare. I don't get them at all now.

Keep trying. It took me the better part of the year as well and I wasn't always perfect, trust me. It's a difficult habit to break. I'd first try not having it every day, stretching it to just every other day, then every two days, etc. and drastically cutting back on the amount per day that I did decide to drink. I eventually got over the need. Having it not in the house does help. After you get over that big hump, you won't miss it.

I have never smoked, but they (who?) say that cigarettes are the most difficult to control of all addictions .

...............
It's a physical addiction in addition to a mental one. I quit 30 years ago and it was terrible.

My point is that even if a student can't stay up to speed on what is deemed important, they are fed what to know instead of having learned it.
How does this do anything to further the desire to learn as opposed to "I can't wait to get the hell out of school"?
I have intelligent kids- at least I think I do. I went to every conference, every event, hired tutors if necessary and even stayed up all night to help the procrastinator, kid 2. But kid 3 comes home and says the class gets a retake a test? She got an A and still retakes. That is fucked up. It should not be happening. If kids were tested on their retention (think Iowa Test of Basic Skills) yearly as opposed to being fed what they are tested on, Common Core and the concept it owns, would not be needed, and you could hire and fire the failed teachers whose kids are not learning. Common Core is going to kill anything kids could possibly do because of "retakes" and partial credit. This teaches nothing but how to merely get by. There will not be effective retention, in my opinion.
