Happy Friday!

Politico: filibuster change could expand field of future nominees. Yeah, that's kinda the problem. No one in their right minds wants the judiciary to become as partisan as the legislative and executive branches have become.

The trial for the Aurora, Colorado shooter will be delayed again. It was supposed to start in February. Prosecutors had sought additional psychiatric evaluation, suggesting that the first evaluations found him to be insane.

Gov. Christie takes the reins of the RGA. And there was a surprise appearance.

Alright, ya'll have a good weekend. Also, I'll be gone all next week, so be good to Andy.

30 TFG and the Democrats are progressively managing to offend everyone. First off, expropriating 100 million health insurance policies (even if only 6 million know so far, we know the CBO estimated the real number). Next, handing over nuclear arms to the Iranians irritates allies and supporters of Israel here in this country. There's lots more, but y'all know that. Now, even John McCain is pissed off. Even John McCain now believes TFG in the White House is to be feared.

Exactly!  And the same thing happened when the Republicans had their majority decades ago.  They excluded Democrats from their meetings, exactly as the Dems had done to them all the time THEY were in the majority -- in short, business as usual.

But the Dems went whining to the media about those mean, exclusive Republicans, and the partisan, shill media backed them to the hilt, never mentioning that the whiny Libs had been doing the same thing!

I don't know who to hate more, the Searchlight Strangler for doing what he did, the Media for going out of their way NOT to explain any of this to the public, or a stupid and unengaged public who can't be assed to look any of this up despite having all the information of the world at their fingertips online.

I only have so much hate, have to make sure those who are truly worthy get their share of it.

53

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  IÂ’m back.

In order to forestall any future banning, allow me to paraphrase Sherlock Holmes in The Adventure of the Yellow Face:  if it should ever strike the Horde that IÂ’m getting a little too intemperate in my remarks, kindly post the words Princesse de Lamballe, and I will be eternally grateful.

Now, with that out of the way, a story for Friday:

Have you ever heard of the actress Dina Merrill?  Born in 1925, she was the only child of Post Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and grew up in an atmosphere of WASP comfort and privilege.  After a year at George Washington University, she left the school to apply at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

In due time she made her way to Hollywood.  Several months before signing her first contract, she met Buddy Adler, who at the time was the new production head of Twentieth Century-Fox.  Impressed by her elegant look, Adler set up a photo test for her.  Merrill was confused, and asked why.  “Obviously to see whether you photograph well, Miss Merrill,” Adler responded.  “Mr. Adler, I was a model at eighteen,” the patrician beauty replied.  “Clearly I do quite well in that department.  ArenÂ’t you interested in whether I can act?”

Adler told her, “No,” which astonished the stage-trained actress.  “Then why do we study acting?” she asked.

“ThatÂ’s your problem, honey,” Adler shrugged.  “Set up the test.”

So Merrill tested.  The Fox makeup department, thinking in formula terms, made her up to look like a combination of Joan Crawford and Betty Grable, and she failed the test.  But she did eventually sign with Fox and became a popular – if never quite first rank – leading lady, appearing in Operation Petticoat, Butterfield 8 and The Courtship of EddieÂ’s Father, among other films.  She even appeared in Batman as the villainess Calamity Jan.

SheÂ’s still alive today, and through wise investments as well as family money, is worth an estimated five billion dollars (John Kerry, call your office!).

And here she is, in 1960Â’s The Sundowners:

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

58 Rush had a good point. The filibuster change means the Democrats have abandoned rules in the Senate. If they are obstructed in something they want, they change the rule. Kind of like how they're treating the population writ large, where if there are obstructions to the police doing anal cavity searches, they rewrite the rules. Or if some CEO gives money to Romney the Democrats send in the IRS or the EPA or whatever legion of evil they want, no matter the rules. The rule of the majority is one big thing the framers sought to avoid. Just one more reminder things are different now under the progressives.

Draw a paycheck, and live the good life compliments of the taxpayer.

While I take a back seat to no one when it comes to my loathing of Dems...this is not DoD's fault.

I actually sit in these "POM Build" meetings every week.  DoD is pinned in a corner.  It's got to cut, thanks to the BCA (aka "sequester"), and Congress has taken away flexibility to pick and choose which accounts they cut.

There's  story on Bloomberg this morning about Boehner being OK with the BCA level cuts so there's plenty of blame to go around here.  It's just that the Dems will get the blame because Obama is in charge.

But I'm also OK with Obama taking blame for everything from Obamacare, to DoD cuts, to the "heartbreak of psoriasis."

I'm afraid there won't be a ****** (that word that scares Poppin' Fresh so much). If this happens, there will be some bitching in the ranks and a lot of new Wal-Marts built adjacent to military bases.

The Democrat plan -- as much as they have one, as opposed to their a-circle-jerk-a-day policy -- is to use the patriotism of the military against them. They will serve, and not complain.

That's what made it possible for Bubba and Hitlery Clinton to pull all the hate-the-military shit they got away with. Choom Boy is worse, but nobody's gonna rise up against him just because he wants to destroy the country.

77 As for as the "special surprise appearance" of George W. Bush, about which the folks at Warm Flatus opine that "he wasnÂ’t a perfect president", boy, does that understate the matter.

Not a perfect president?

Bush was a complete flipping disaster for the Republican Party and for the larger cause of conservatism.

In office, he was the second coming of Lyndon Baines Johnson. Exploding domestic spending on the homefront and boneheadedly micromanaged military engagements abroad. Wasting blood and treasure for nothing. Copiously so. Capping it all off with a huge financial crash on his watch. Ruining the brand of the GOP for a decade.

All of us get up every day with a shitty taste in our mouths because of the current regime. Let's remember a cold hard fact. There is essentially zero chance that we would ever even have had Barack Obama in the Oval Office if it were not for the guy who preceded Obama in there.

We might have a Democratic president at the moment, to be sure, but no one as frankly radical and anti-American as Obama. For Americans to be ready to embrace such a profound change as someone like Obama represented, they had to first be utterly nauseated with the guy who preceded Obama.

G.W. Bush provided the nausea. In convulsing, dry heaving quantities.

The Department of Health and Human Services will allow consumers to begin signing up for coverage under ObamaCare starting Nov. 15, 2014, rather than Oct. 15, 2014, The Wall Street Journal reported early Friday, citing an HHS official. 144 I'm not sure why more companies are doing this. Getting ahead of the game, and riding free for a year. That’s because companies pay up to $7,000 for individual coverage and up to $20,000 for family coverage. Compared to the $2,000 penalty? “You’re going to save a lot of money,” Sutton says. And that’s not all. Sutton adds, “The Obama Administration has postponed the employer mandate penalty until 2015.” That means, if a company cuts its health insurance now, they have a whole year without both the insurance payments to make or the penalties to pay. Perhaps if one does it, then another, then the domino effect. h/t hotair Video: Ohio company cancels insurance coverage for 1,000 employees

Well, we're past 100 comments, so O/T:

I've been reading a wonderful book called The Reach of Rome by Alberto Angela.  It's a journey through the Empire during the reign of Trajan, embodied in a single coin as it travels from the mint to Britannia and then as far away as India as it changes hands.  The last third of the book seems rushed, as if the editor told Angela to cut things, but it's very well written, with characters (all drawn from actual archeological finds or ancient writings) so vivid you wish they would travel along with the coin instead of using it in commerce.

Highly recommended.

Still bad business. He did this to pack the DC Circuit.

Levin pointed out that these are where all the ZeroCare challenges will go first.   So we'll have4 a fighting chance!  /s

And as for Deputy Dawg McConnell, there may not have been anything procedural he could've done to thwart the Searchlight Strangler, but he and his party went quietly to the slaughter.  No threats, no insinuations about coming congresses, nothing.  Taxation without representation.

My hypothetical side loves Reids decision to do this.  The GOP has never been particularly effective at blocking loathesome Leftist nominees.  So let 'em through.

The problem is that the GOP is just too darn nice to use this tactic to drive a stick in the Dems' eye when a Republican is in office.  The Democrats are owed multiple kicks to the teeth from a steel toed boot -- for Bork, for Thomas, for Brown, for Pickering.

FWIW... a President Cruz would understand this and appoint accordingly.  None of the rest would.

Blame Rich, Overeducated Elites as Our Society Frays http://tinyurl.com/lzk4knq (bloomberg) excerpt (elite overproduction) A related sign is the overproduction of law degrees. From the mid-1970s to 2011, according to the American Bar Association, the number of lawyers tripled to 1.2 million from 400,000. Meanwhile, the population grew by only 45 percent. Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. recently estimated that twice as many law graduates pass the bar exam as there are job openings for them. In other words, every year U.S. law schools churn out about 25,000 “surplus” lawyers, many of whom are in debt. A large number of them go to law school with an ambition to enter politics someday. Don’t hate them for it -- they are at the mercy of the same large, impersonal social forces as the rest of us. The number of newly minted MBAs has expanded even faster than law degrees. and We’re Losing The Two Things Tocqueville Said Mattered Most About American Democracy: A view of America, from France. http://tinyurl.com/pgrw6dd (thefederalist) excerpt: Of course, in different ways, these people are driving apart. In particular, as Charles Murray has noted, we are witnessing (to coin a phrase) an increase in marriage inequality as those at the top manage to build successful, solid families, whereas those at the bottom are seeing the institution wither away. When we are aware of the gains from strong families in terms of social, human and even financial capital, conservatives can see here that we truly have an inequality of conditions that should concern us. ... After equality, Tocqueville points to another vital foundation for the success of the American experiment: religiosity. food for thought the first one being very marxist in its approach - it's tough to swallow

Rush had a good point.  The filibuster change means the Democrats have abandoned rules in the Senate. If they are obstructed in something they want, they change the rule.

^^^^ this.

Ezra Klein (yeah, yeah, I know) was saying this yesterday in his column about the filibuster ... except he was crowing about it, as opposed to Rush's warning about it:

The filibuster now exists in what you might call an unstable equilibrium. It theoretically forces a 60-vote threshold on important legislation. But it can - and now, in part, has — been undone with 51 votes. Its only protection was the perceived norm against using the 51-vote option. Democrats just blew that norm apart. The moment one party or the other filibusters a consequential and popular bill, that's likely the end of the filibuster, permanently.

Just think ... with the Marxists in the White House, radical-left court-packing now inevitable, and the filibuster for all practical purposes in a coma for the next year, we're only 17 RINO squishes in the House away from one-party rule.  Yay!

266 I was in elementary school in a D.C. bedroom community suburb. Someone knocked on our classroom door, whispered to our little old lady strict teacher, and she paused a moment collecting her thoughts while we all waited in suspense, acting as though intent on our handwriting drill. She called for our attention, and told us that we were to go directly home and speak with our mothers. Being kids, we wondered what we'd done wrong. That was a long and silent walk home, no one chatting. There was an ominous dread all about. When we got home, our mother had us sit with her watching the tv, which was really weird since she called it the idiot box and we got smacked for watching without permission, strict programming allotments. Of course it was the news broadcast we saw, which showed his assassination occurring for what seemed like weeks on end without stopping. Every time the tv was turned on, the news was replaying the Dallas coverage over and over. We were watching live when Ruby shot the CIA operative in custody. SICK. We were just kids watching the news with our parents, and THAT is what we saw happen. In subsequent years, from a kid's perspective, when MLK, Malcolm X, and RFK were also assassinated, it was obvious that life "out there" in the big cities was nothing like our little hamlet (natural self defense rationale). Politics were a dangerous business. If leaders didn't do as they were told by really powerful criminals extremely well organized and situated, they were killed just like any other bug squished underfoot. It could happen in the Police Headquarters building. And the FBI couldn't help stop it from happening over and over again. People today say how fluffy the world was for children then, and compared to today, yes our parents protected us. But the greatest generation couldn't really explain why our national leaders were being executed in broad daylight (like a banana republic). It looked as though it was starting all over again when Reagan was shot "by a gun that kills" (Brady Law convenient timing). Were the shit that happened during the '60s to go down today, all Americans would be rounded up as the "usual suspects" no thanks to Congress and GWB for the "temporary" Patriot Act that just keeps getting bigger and more ominously perniciously authoritarian. ...like The Blob that threatened Steve McQueen if it were funny. Not.

Everyone in America thought things were out of control...Vietnam was heating up, the President murdered, then the assassin murdered, so what next, war with Russia?

Term limits are, IMO,  one of the most necessary steps in returning to constitutional governance.  Term limit everyone, from the most senior Justice to the newest dewy-eyed intern with a fresh set of kneepads and mouthwash.

And I don't like the argument "the government's too big and complex!  We need people who know how to work it!"  The government is big and complex because it has been made so, deliberately.  Strip it back to Coolidge levels, at least.

314 Is anyone else more than a little sick of the fawning coverage of the Kennedy Assassination anniversary today?   I understand that it was a turning point in the country's history -- and    it's   moving to read the comments here at the HQ   from   those who were alive at the time and remember what they were doing when it happened -- but my God.  The MFM is treating it like the most important moment in history.

Why don't we get coverage like this for the D-Day anniversary?   For the anniversary of Pearl Harbor?   Hell, we barely get this much coverage about 9/11 anymore, and that was less than fifteen years ago.

So what I would like to do today is commemorate another moment in history:  the Butt Fumble.

Yes, on this day in 2012, Mark   Sanchez, quarterback of the NY Jets, ran headlong into one of his own teammate's blubbery hindquarters, fumbling the football and leading to a     scoring spree by my New England Patriots.

Thank you, Mark Sanchez.

319 I am in the camp that believes that the OCA was designed to fail. It was only the first move in a longer game to move to single payer/government healthcare. Move two: Democrats will explain that "we tried" to reform the system but insurance companies remain the problem: scaring people with cancellation letters etc. We will be told that "We need" a bolder vision: Single payer is the only solution, we will be told. And now, we will also be told, we have an "emergency" situation. Women, children without insurance! We will be told there is no time for the usual Republican obstructionism. The system must be fixed now! Dear Leader will profess that he would prefer the fix to come from Congress but that he will not sit idly by if Congress "fails to act." It's coming folks. And soon.

325 Yes, I am tired of the JFK maunderings, because a lot of people, especially blue collar Democrats cordially despised JFK--mostly because of Old Joe and his many evils and the entitled aura of the Kennedy clan. People were even more upset to suddenly have that vile old lecherous horse thief LBJ as President. Then the RFK assassination brought the JFK mess back into focus. Frankly, when Mary Jo Kopechne's unfortunate and mysterious death derailed TFK's hopes, I think everyone was glad it was at an end.

326 291. Permanent memory imprint when tragedy strikes home. Retrospect, after disappearing Johnson's corruption charges/evidence, why would 'they' rationalize that LBJ would come out historically smelling like a rose? Seems that the national media officially bought into the Democrat's Party by that point. Slant, Great Society. LBJ won by calling Goldwater a war monger and blaming JFK's assassination on his opponent.

336 The reason the media peddles JFK conspiracy theories is because they don't want to face the fact that crazy a left-winger did it, which is what really happened.

Had some John Bircher done the shooting (which is what the media really wanted to happen in that awful place Dallas) there would be no conspiracy theories, and anyone who said it was a set up would be treated like a Holocaust-denier.
