About that Obamacare cost-curve bending: The GovernmentÂ’s Own Actuaries Think Obamacare Is Raising, Not Lowering, Costs

No, really: Miller and McCloskey: The Next ObamaCare Mirage
The new line is that the health-care law will save money. That's also not true.

Another Healthcare.gov shoe drops: ID Verification Lagging on Health Care Website. Related: People are really uploading images of their drivers licenses to this insecure POS? I'm sure that'll work out great.

How it's done: NR's Kevin Williamson smacks the hell out of a litany of progressive talking points.

Have a great day, Serious You Guys.

This is a holiday-week opportunity only, so if you're really dying to get something out of the cobs, this is your moment. Send your question/comment/request for advice/whatever to andy+asktheblog AT aoshq DOT com, and, provided it's not utter lunacy, there's a good chance we'll read it and either answer it or (more likely) mock it on the podcast. Two hour delay for the little tax exemptions this morning.....only school system in the area that is not closed outright.

There's just nothing more entertaining than watching inexperienced teen drivers trying to negotiate a tricky curved sloping road on their way to school when it's covered with snow, and slush. There should be a few fender benders this morning.

BS, there are well over 150M with employer health care and unless congress amends the law ALL of them will lose their insurance.  Why you ask?  Because every healthcare plan in the country has has some change to either their coverage or their rates.

18 Read the story accusing Katy Perry "cultural appropriation" from the right column.  It's the newest product offering from the perpetually aggrieved for fun and profit industry.  This from the story is particularly noteworthy:

"[Miley Cyrus' performance is] adeptly likened to stealing in the sense that Miley played the part of a marginalized individual, without any genuine experience of marginalization..."

I can think of someone else that applies to -- the half-black fellow raised by whites in Indonesia, Honolulu, the Punahou School, Columbia and Harvard who routinely  affects the patois, accent and mannerisms of a downtrodden south side Chicago pimp.

19 Regarding that Williamson comment, it astounds me how leftist can go from outcome based arguments to process based arguments in the same sentence, using each whenever it benefits their side. To wit: the job market under Obama is doing horribly because those damn republicans just get in his way. Despite that he has led to the stock market booming to over 16000. The economy under Clinton was fantastic and he deserves all the credit for it and balancing the budget. Saint Reagan quadrupled the deficit and his economy was all about increasing inequality, a legacy that still haunts us today. All use different forms of logic to arrive at the same conclusion, Democrats are great and Republicans suck. Both will be deployed as needed to come to their already formed conclusion.

25 I'm listening the podcast from last week. Gabe and Co. is all over the place. The statement that a 'child tax credit' isn't conservative because the government shouldn't be picking winners and losers, was preceded not 15 minutes before by the argument that we need to 'keep' some of JEFCare like the stay on insurance until 26 and 'everyone can get health insurance'. Clearly, more requirements of the over-regulated insurance industry is 'conservative', while letting people keep more of their money isn't. I'm well aware of the context that the term 'breeders' is used in the gay community, Gabe. You should be taken to task for your use of it.

37 Hey, 23, here's the full comment (the questions are embedded):

Allow me to answer these for you real quick:

1) If Republicans are so fiscally responsible, why was President Eisenhower (in the 1950′s) the last Republican president to balance the budget?

Answer: False premise; the last Republican to balance the budget was Newt Gingrich. Presidents donÂ’t write budgets, cannot authorize spending, and cannot authorize taxes. Congress does that.

2) If President Reagan was such a fiscally conservative hero, why did he quadruple our national debt during his eight years in the White House?

Answer: False premise; Tip OÂ’Neill quadrupled the national debt. Presidents donÂ’t write budgets, cannot authorize spending, and cannot authorize taxes. Congress does that.

3) If tax breaks are the main driving force behind job creation, how would we create jobs once tax rates were reduced to practically zero?

Answer: Tax breaks are not the main force behind job creation; demand for labor is the main force behind job creation.

4) If socialized health care is so awful, why does every country that leads the world in life expectancy have socialized health care?

Answer: What on earth do you mean by “socialized medicine”? If you mean single-payer, then your premises are, as seems to be the developing trend here, wrong. The longest-lived countries are Japan and Switzerland, neither of which is single-payer. Counterquestion: If socialized medicine is great, how come people on Medicaid have some terrible health outcomes?

5) If you support the freedom of religion (as per our Constitution), and my church recognizes gay marriage, isnÂ’t your support for the banning of same-sex marriage an attack on my religionÂ’s First Amendment rights?

Answer: No, your church can believe what it wants. The question is the legal status of same-sex relationships. Counterquestion: The Church of Kevin says nobody should ever have to pay more than 10 percent in taxes -- is the IRS violating my First Amendment rights?

6) WhatÂ’s more realistic? 1) That an entire region of the United States that supported slavery in the late-1800′s and support segregation in the 1950′s and 60′s suddenly stopped being racist, or 2) The racist southern Democrats in the south became Republicans during the 50′s and 60′s when the Republican party shifted toward an idea called the “Southern Strategy,” where the GOP appealed to the racism in southern whites who didnÂ’t like African Americans voting for Democrats.

Answer: False premise. Southern voters in the main did not become Republicans until the 1990s, as shown by Southern congressional delegations, state governments, etc. In presidential elections, Southern states voted overwhelmingly for Republicans such as Nixon and Reagan, but then so did Vermont. The Southern congressional caucus was Democratic until 1994; Mississippi had one Republican governor in all the 20th century, and that not until 1994, which seems like a long time to wait to punish Democrats for partially supporting a Republican civil-rights bill in 1965.

7) If taxes are at some of their lowest levels in history, and the wealthiest in this country are richer than ever, why hasnÂ’t the growth in the wealth of the middle class matched that of the top 2%?

Answer: Because in a world of globally integrated markets returns to skill and entrepreneurial success at the high end of the market are very large, while pressure on moderate-to-low-skill wages is very strong. Wealthy Americans are getting wealthier for the same reason that wealthy Swedes are getting wealthier, despite having a very different tax code.

If our Founding Fathers wanted this nation to be based on Christianity, why don’t the words “Christian” or “Christianity” appear even once in our Constitution?

Answer: They expected the republic to continue as part of Christian civilization, not to have a U.S. version of the Church of England. India has a secular constitution, but nobody seems to much doubt that it is a Hindu country, in spite of the presence of non-Hindu minorities.

9) If a Republican president reduced massive job losses in the midst of the worst recession in nearly a century by more than 50% in his first 4 months in office; presided over 44 consecutive months of private-sector job growth creating nearly 8 million jobs; killed Osama bin Ladin; saw stock markets reach all-time highs; saved the American auto industry; increased domestic oil production to highs not seen since the late-90′s and championed the largest year-to-year deficit reductions since World War II, would your party not be calling him a hero and a legend?

Answer: Since when did you guys start loving the stock market, which contributes so much to the inequality youÂ’re so worried about in No. 7? Counterquestion: If a Republican presidentÂ’s term coincided with the lowest workforce-participation rate in recent history, an illegal war in Libya, and the illegal assassination of U.S. citizens based on their Facebook histories, would you not call him . . . something less than heroic?

10. If Jesus spent his life helping the poor and the needy, how does it make sense that a party which claims to be for “Christian values” continues to cut funding for programs that help the poor and the needy?

Answer: Let me help you out here: Jesus commanded his followers to feed the hungry and clothe the naked. He did not command them to petition Caesar to seize their neighbors’ assets and to use them to feed the hungry and clothe the naked. Also, you’re begging the question: If you compare money spent to changes in the poverty rate, there is little or no evidence that these programs actually “help the poor and the needy.” They do create a lot of full-time jobs and vote banks for Democrats. By their fruit shall ye know them.

CONCLUSION: Whoever wrote this questionnaire, which is in fact no so much a questionnaire as a litany of banalities, is not very bright and should be kept far from the levers of political power.

But it also reflects a broader scaling-back of the use of American muscle, not least in the Middle East, as well as a willingness to deal with foreign governments as they are rather than to push for new leaders that better embody American values. “Regime change,” in Iran or even Syria, is out; cutting deals with former adversaries is in

70 Answer: Tax breaks are not the main force behind job creation; demand for labor is the main force behind job creation. Demand for labor is caused by the difference between costs (which include taxes) and revenue. If revenue is higher then costs, then business will add more labor to increase revenue. High taxes kill demand for labor by destroying any positive difference between revenue and costs. But to the FSA the word 'profit' (the positive difference between revenue and costs) is a filthy word. To them, tens of millions of Americans unemployed is acceptable as long as businesses do not create a profit.

79 City Orders Bar To Remove 'Thank A Veteran For Your Freedom!' Sign...(Drudge) “I love this place. The sign gives me the pride back that I lost Â… I struggled a lot when I first came back,” an Army vet told CBS2′s Stacey Butler. ... “We received a letter in the mail from the city stating that we have to remove it within two days or they were going to fine us, like, $940,” says co-owner John Marovic. ... The issue has some of the signÂ’s supporters scratching their heads. Said one veteran: “I can understand city ordinances, but itÂ’s been up there for 10 years. 85 Ignorance and homophobia are increasing more and more these days. In Bridgewater, New Jersey, a waitress who served in the Marines was denied a tip because of her “gay lifestyle,” according to The Huffington Post. The former soldier, Dayna Morales, introduced herself to a family at The Gallop Asian Bistro and received an offensive response. With Dayna’s extremely short hair the mother of the family commented, “Oh I thought you were gonna say your name is Dan. You sure surprised us!” The family, including two children, failed to leave a tip for Morales after eating a ninety-three dollar meal. On the receipt was a note that said, “I’m sorry, but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life.” Only one problem with the story. The family has the original receipt and the credit card bill which shows they gave a tip. There was no writing on their copy of the receipt. The waitresses body language and lack of eye contact with reporter told me all I needed to know. Straight-bashing, the new normal.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Sorry for only a short story today, but IÂ’ll make it up to you with a picture.

In 1963, Burt Lancaster starred in The Leopard, a movie based on the immensely popular novel of the same name by Italian author Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.  Lancaster played Don Fabrizio, a 19th century Sicilian nobleman caught up in the revolutionary fervor of the Italian Risorgimento.   His co-star was the beautiful Claudia Cardinale as Angelica, the mayorÂ’s daughter.

The film was shot on location in Sicily and was visually sumptuous, much more than most of LancasterÂ’s pictures.  The star was proud of the movie and his role, and one day went to see the movie in a public theater.

His smile faded, though, when he heard the man behind him impatiently ask his wife, “When’s Lancaster going to screw Cardinale?”

And here she is:

Syria and Israel regard each other as enemies. A state of war has existed between them for decades. 105 A New Jersey couple is reportedly disputing a story that made headlines nationwide about a gay waitress who was left a note criticizing her "lifestyle" instead of a tip, claiming their receipt shows they did leave a tip and didn't write the note. Dayna Morales, an ex-Marine and server at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, said she received the offensive note on a November 13 receipt. "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I don't agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life,” the message read. NBCNewYork.com reports that the couple, who asked to remain anonymous, contacted the station after the story went viral and produced a receipt that was apparently printed at the same time, on the same date, for the same amount, except with an $18 tip. The couple also produced document they claimed was a Visa bill, which indicated their card was charged for the meal plus the tip, for a total of $111.55, the station reported. The couple told NBCNewYork.com they believe their receipt was used for a hoax. The husband said he didn't vote for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie because the governor opposes same-sex marriage. "Never would a message like that come from us," he said. I knew this was crap the moment I saw the story. One of my "liberal Friends" posted this on FB as if it was true and I cautioned them to be careful that is probably crap.

Look at all the small mom and pop businesses that are owned by Christians who are now finding themselves being sued for discrimination. Photographers, bakeries, a Christian resort/B&B. Private businesses are being forced to do business with people that are living a lifestyle that they do not support. Yet people can openly express hatred of Christians and conservatives without any consequences. I just read a story on the Blaze yesterday about a Christian golfer who lost his sponsorship deal because he was a Christian who supported Ted Cruz and watched Glen Beck (something that came out during a lunch). Not only did he get canned, he was openly mocked for his beliefs.

Williamson runs a bit loose with the truth.  If neither Ike nor Clinton can be credited with balanced budgets, then Barack Obama can't be pilloried for the current deficit.  You can't have it both ways.

The fact is, the president and the congress are supposed to work together to write and approve a Budget - something that hasn't been done in any of Obama's years.  Why?  Because he doesn't WANT a budget.  A budget wouldn't allow King Obama to rule by decree.

Clinton was horrible in a lot of ways, and he's a liar's liar, but compared to Obama he is a Churchillian Statesman.  And Ike?  Ike is arguably one of the five greatest president this nation has ever had.  You'd better believe that Ike balanced the budget - because there WAS a budget, and he got Congress to agree with him.

that's called Leadership.  I mention this because we haven't seen it in something like 10 or 20 years now...

My Thanksgiving prayer is that more and more progressives learn that it is a lot harder "being  a  man" than it is "sticking it to the man", and grow up.

147 There was the woman college prof who painted anti black slurs on her car and then drove it to some anti racist campus rally. She told the police that she had parked her car and when she came back, her car had been vandalized with the slurs. However, several black students testified that they saw her drive into the parking lot with her car that way.

148 1979 Tehran embassy hostages react to West's deal with Iran 'I never found an Iranian leader I can trust,' retired CIA officer says. Wife: We are probably not very Christian-like when it comes to all this AP Published: 11.26.13, 12:51 / Israel News A nuclear deal between the US, Iran and other world powers has been described as a trust-building step after decades of animosity that hopefully will lead to a more comprehensive deal down the road. But for many of the 66 Americans who were held hostage for 444 days at the start of the Iranian revolution, trusting the regime in Tehran feels like a mistake. "It's kind of like Jimmy Carter all over again," said Clair Cortland Barnes, now retired after a career at the CIA and elsewhere. He sees the negotiations now as no more effective than they were in 1979 and 1980, when he and others languished, facing mock executions and other torments. The hostage crisis began in November of 1979 when militants stormed the United States Embassy in Tehran and seized its occupants. Funny that I have to read this in an Israeli Newspaper and not the NY Times?

149 And really your cause no favors when you engage in this kind of histrionics, Apparently the family supported gay marriage and they got branded as hateful anyway because the woman was an attention seeker. What might happen is the family might be slightly less in favor of gay marriage now because of the objectionable actions of this woman.

152 Mornin' all. I couldn't help but hear a clip on the radio this morning of Obama talking to the heckler. Obama said something like "What you need to know when I'm talking....as the president of the United States...." So, basically, he thinks we should sit down and shut up because he's president and he's talking. I'm all for respecting the office, but good god, the condescension in that statement is infuriating.

154 Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at November 26, 2013 08:44 AM (zF6Iw) I don't recall that, but I was cutting the grass so I was only half paying attention. In any case, at the risk of courting the banning: Gabe often seems to be the one issue type person around here. I'm generally fine with one issue people, a few of them in the mix help keep us focused. Except Gabe's one issue is a) personal (which is always dangerous when something gets to close to home and b) arguably not really conservative. Frankly, I'm not sure what it is, socially liberal? Maybe Libertarian? But it doesn't advance the cause IMHO, at best it moves it sideways. So in this case "One issue" people are utterly unhelpful. That and I remember a podcast where Gabe went "Well I was just talking to someone from State..." in that attempting a casual namedrop type thing. The DC machine has eaten him, he's doing what all DC people do, casually dropping their connections as if it matters. Once the machine gets you, it's over, you're done, it'll chew you up and spit you out as something utterly not conservative. Part of the reason the wife and I decided to turn down any offers for her to move to DC. It'd be a good career move (and there'd be more work there for me) but we don't want to become that. (Plus the schools suck, the cost of living is remarkably high, but mostly that first part.)

157 Iranian missile technicians secretly visited North Korea as part of joint development of a new rocket booster for long-range missiles or space launchers at the same time nuclear talks took place in Geneva, according to U.S. officials. Several groups of technicians from the Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group (SHIG), a unit in charge of building IranÂ’s liquid-fueled missiles, traveled to Pyongyang during the past several month, including as recently as late October, to work on the new, 80-ton rocket booster being developed by the North Koreans, according to officials familiar with intelligence reports. The booster is believed by U.S. intelligence agencies to be intended for a new long-range missile or space launch vehicle that could be used to carry nuclear warheads, and could be exported to Iran in the future. Recent U.S. intelligence assessments have said that both North Korea and Iran are expected to have missiles capable of hitting the United States with a nuclear warhead in the next two years. The Iranian cooperation reveals that the nuclear framework agreement concluded Sunday in Geneva has not slowed TehranÂ’s drive for missiles that can deliver a nuclear warhead to intercontinental range.

I imagine a lot of people would stay far away from an establishment that played games with receipts. So the owner, who overlooked the dykey looking appearance and provided the waitress employment will suffer. Probably have to lay off staff, due to declining business, but not the lesbian because she's probably legally protected.

161 Jay Leno poked fun at the Iran deal Monday saying that President Obama made an Obamacare like promise to the Iranians, “if you like your uranium, you can keep your uranium.” The full exchange is available below: JAY LENO: Well, apparently what got the Iranians to sign this deal was the promise from President Obama. He told the Iranians, if you like your uranium, you can keep your uranium. So, I don’t know. Well, President Obama’s approval rating is now down at the lowest point of his presidency. It’s down to 37%. In fact, here’s how bad it’s gotten. You know the Thanksgiving turkey he’s pardoning this week? The turkey said, no pictures. I don’t want pictures. [ laughter ]

And it gives him an opportunity to say he can't do something publicly, while he's doing that very thing privately through executive orders. 172 The most infuriating thing about the Obama heckler isn't whether or not he is a plant but that he is in fact an illegal alien. Think how far this country has fallen, we now have law breakers featured on national TV heckling the President of the United States and the first reaction of the msm is that Obama needs to implement amnesty and not that this little shit needs to be deported.

11:10 am || Meets with film industry representatives; DreamWorks Studios, Glendale, Calif.
12:15 pm || Delivers remarks; DreamWorks Studios, Glendale, Calif.
1:40 pm || Departs Los Angeles
9:20 pm ET || Arrives White House

I guess the only thing that gets O out of bed early is money.

180 'Breeder' - The holiest of human social activity - creating and shepherding to adulthood fellow members of God's earthly family - is reduced to its crudest animal component. Despite that, the term could be employed in either friendly or hostile fashion, ugly though it is, no worse than calling our beloved offspring 'rugrats' when they're troublesome. Used light-heartedly by an aunt or uncle who is a dead-ender (what you are if you don't breed, regardless of your persuasions (yes, I just made that up - I think)). Childlessness is an unhappy consequence of some life choices, and unchosen forces, and breeding has its devastating consequences as well, for everyone including the little muggers we ruin, so, all differences being part of the human condition, we can make light of them. However, having been employed so frequently with such derogatory venom, in the midst of outright cultural warfare upon het pair bonded family unity, the humor is pretty much drained away from this one, to which anyone thinking to use the term ought be sensitive. And you know such folks want to be sensitive.

181 Only one problem with the story. The family has the original receipt and the credit card bill which shows they gave a tip. There was no writing on their copy of the receipt. They had the statement from the credit card company showing the card had been charged the meal price plus tip, matching what they had on their copy of the receipt. Managers have to enter the amount of the tip written in the tip line, and reconcile it on their computer screen in the POS system. That is evident from the computerized receipt. That's how the server gets paid the tip. Since management entered in the tip and it was charged, it's obvious that the receipt is a copy printed afterward. Management is digging a hole if they protect this server, and leaving themselves open to a lawsuit, since they said they have NO idea how that tip got on there. The manager is probably the server's girlfriend.

182 Why not make this a nationwide Stiff-A-Gay-Waiter's-Tip Thanksgiving, just to even out all the horseshit you'll have to hear at your relatives' houses? Squawk all you like, there's still no law against not leaving a tip. They want this? Give it to them. The embarrassing part is having to ask each and every restaurant staffer about sexual proclivities, but hey, Moron. And, Big Winter Holiday. Nothing new.

Every gay waitperson is self-stiffed anyway, because Really Want To Direct.

And greetings from the frosty, raggedy-ass Front Range, which, when the clouds come down to the ground so's you can't see the mountain, is a lot like Ohio.

183 "Progressives love science — right up until the second they don’t." "Qi Bono?" Obamacare and the New Age quacks By Kevin D. Williamson NRO, November 26, 2013 4:00 AM = Williamson touched on a lot of hot buttons and loosely stitched them together without tying any knots. As for medical practitioners, investing the federal government with the legislated power to determine your choice because you're just too stupid to go figure, it's the entire premise of MANDATE that must be rescinded. I knew a mother who became a convert of her cure-all chiropractor. But not every chiropractor is a quack claiming the ability to cure your every ailment. Just as every American isn't the same as she and her husband, a Raytheon engineer with good benefits and a comfortable income. They were expecting to get professional two-for-one price, cheap skates. She could just as well have gone to a DO for her MD/Chiropractic all-in-one stop, and done her children the best service they could have afforded when they had viral and bacterial infections. Scientism presents theory as fact, and disregards whatever scientific research findings and evidence that do not support the politically correct favored theory. Evolution happens as a natural course of events, but exactly how can not be presumed as "fact" so long as missing links are such. I participated in a precinct platform meeting, and read the party platform and campaign literature from the TX political parties and candidates running for state education office. Granted, given Williamson's case in point, the Texas Republican Party is hell bent on revving up the groundswell that Biblical metaphor must counter balance the lengths taken with (he never said) Darwinian "scientism". ...IF the TX Republican groundswell were to approach "science" and "history" with that premise, non-fundamentalists of every ideology would likely support the Classical Liberal provision of varying perspectives, freedom of thought, from which each student should research independently to realize his/her own view on matters. But school class time is limited. And public education hardly has "researching information" as the purpose while babysitting and indoctrinating students. And at this point, even were validating research the case, students/parents would not embrace the ideals of learning. Today's typical American, regardless of economic strata, does not want to deal with their children's educations after long hours at work, and trying to deal with making dinner at home. And then there are the brainfarts who can't see past the profit; if knowledge doesn't provide an immediate profit, ax it. Leaving education to the politicians is exactly staying stuck on stupid.
