Whalp, that didn't come out right.

As I write, Mark Obenshain is behind by about 500 votes. This is the Virginia Attorney General race, and it's the only thing standing between us and a complete Democratic sweep. Obenshain is one of the reasons I went to the polls yesterday (although I voted for Cuccinelli too, as anyone should have expected given my posts for the last six years), and it looks like we're going to a recount to find out if he made it.

Ben Domenech had "10 lessons for the GOP from Cuccinelli's campaign" in yesterday's Transom and he made it available at the Federalist. I beg you, read it before you try and guess at what happened here in Virginia. His 2, 3, and 8 are what really killed it.

Oh, and despite the fantasies of people who, er, can't read, it wasn't that the party abandoned Cuccinelli. That would be comforting fantasy for Cuccinelli's folks, but it just doesn't work when you look at the actual numbers.

Updated to add: Geraghty's post-mortem this morning should definitely be read.

2 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, November 06, 2013.  On this day in 1935  Edwin Armstrong presented his paper "A Method of Reducing Disturbances in Radio Signaling by a System of Frequency Modulation" to the New York section of the Institute of Radio Engineers.  It is hard to believe that FM has only been around since 1935.  Back when I was a kid FM was the home of classical music.  Now it is a swamp and AM has been relegated to talk radio.

How about his 1?

In 2009, the RNC spent more than $9 million in Virginia to elect Bob McDonnell – this year, they’ve spent around $3 million, mostly targeted at fledgling minority-targeting efforts.

Cuccinelli expected he’d become a national election – he did for the Democrats, but not the Republicans.

Obviously everyone has issues.

My only question regarding the Virginia result is, did the R candidate make a sufficient case for smaller government?  If he did that, and he still lost, then that's Virginia's fault.  If he did not, if the R party didn't support him enough, or he was going off on esoteric subjects, well, then that's the party/candidate's fault.

Either way, Virginia now has a first class scumbag for Governor.   I wish them  luck with that.

84 NRO re: Cuccinelli: “Women” are not a monolithic voting block. Although many are citing the exit-poll data showing female voters going for McAuliffe 52–41, among married women, 42 percent went for McAuliffe and 51 percent went for Cuccinelli — that’s even one percentage point higher than the Republicans’ total among married men. The real division was not sex, but marital status. Fifty-eight percent of unmarried men and 67 percent of unmarried women went for McAuliffe. Whether young voters, minorities, or especially single women, the social issues again killed the GOP. If you don't define yourself then the other side will. And if you're too far out there the public doesn't want to hear it. Pro-life is fine, I'm Catholic and feel the same way. But absolutism isn't viable in 2013, there's got to be some middle ground. Making it harder to friggin' divorce? Again, seriously, in today's world? Please. I don't like Christie but he has this particular important point down: Be socially conservative, don't push it so hard on everyone else. It's a free country, or it used to be. 92 The sources you cited today, Gabe, did not make a good case. Posted by: eman at November 06, 2013 07:21 AM (AO9UG)

It's not that they do not make a good case, it's that no case is made, at all, regarding the numbers.   Okay, fine, Geraghty provides the numbers spent in this race.   That is meaningless, completely meaningless, without comparison to numbers spent in prior races in VA and, possibly, numbers for races spent in other close gubernatorial contests.   Telling me but but but we spent X tells me nothing at all about if that X represents reduced, static or increased spending.  Saying well the DGA spent nothing in NJ is a ridiculous comparison because NJ was not within reach.   Hell, the Dem could probably argue that was a self-fulfilling prophecy.   You think I couldn't win so you didn't give me money to see if I could win.

I would like to see a comparison of past support v. current support in VA and support in other competitive governor races v. this race before I reach any conclusion as to the money issue.

93 'morning. I awoke to the overnight thread, and just finished reading the 10/30 Mead article, "Immigration: A Bigger Problem Than You Think," @ The American Interest. /Modernization In Europe/...quote: But if America is running some risks in going ahead with mass immigration, Europe is playing with fire. It is not primarily because many of the immigrants are from Muslim backgrounds; it is not because of their skin color. It is fundamentally because they are foreign: “not us.” Modernization in Europe was a process of creating ethnically homogenous nation states and, on the far side of the murders and expulsions necessary to create that new status quo, building institutions in which the homogenous states could work together. end quote. Rather, modernization is abbreviation. Strip down to the single common thread. Mead mentions the post-Christian era. Regardless of which era, blood is thicker than water. What transcends borders, culture, even language? Ideas can transcend a tribe, a region, and go global. Just look at religions that proselytize. Deadly mix, religion with empire (contemporary Saudi Wahhabi would reconquer the world, for example). Never fail to recognize that an idea "means" different things to different people. Different languages express the idea in obviously different words. And the people's understanding of an idea always registers according to personal experience, and awareness of cultural history. Mead's idea is the inevitability of global immigration without boundaries. He's too cowardly to say so. So "from where he sits" he narrates. Mead's premise is that European governments only began identifying along ethnic lines in the 19th Century. To which I call bullshit. His relevant point, however, is that Europeans practice a special sort of self righteous toleration for "the other" ethnic emigrants that is only an illusion, as ethnic nationalism will never change. Arguable, he projects "from where he sits" that the USA still "successfully" assimilates the massive influx of emigrant Muslim, Mexican, Central and South American, etc. Mead fails to address for the USA the issues he directs regarding the EU, of a language preserved within a nation for common communication for all residents, and the high unemployment both major US political parties want cheap labor for easy profits and easier votes to persuade with empty promises.

I didn't say anything about condoms, etc. I said Cuccinelli was defined as further out there than he is (and in truth he's pretty far right socially) rather than defining himself. A far-right past, followed by trying to avoid talking about it, followed by trying to overcome the way the other side defined you, is toxic. Jackson also killed him because he is an idiot. Edsel's first son was Henry II (the Deuce).  His second son was  originally named Edsel II, but later renamed Benson.  Benson went on to run  the Mercury division then (due to his drinking) he ran the dealer relations for Lincoln.

Benson's liver gave out fairly young, but his wife carried on the tradition.  When my wife and I were first married, we had occasion to hammer Bloody Marys at 8am with Edith Ford on board her yacht the Onika.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. Are there any states that have been trending red?

Here's the winning formula:

1) Democrats win a few elections in a state.

2) The GOP says, "We need to run moderates!  The state is turning purple!"

3) GOP runs moderates.  Moderates suck at governing, do Democrat things but without the big handouts.  They lose because low-tax social liberalism is the ultimate shit position in politics.  Easy to make them look bad because they are in bed with Big Business, which is less popular than Herpes.  They still get tarred as ultra-conservatives.

4) State turns blue, GOP declares it 'lost' like it was taken by zombies.  Efforts go to support moderate candidates in purple states.

Combine poorly targeted add buys with a consulting machine that has to make sure the right people get that money the RNC might be better of just embezzling the money so they can all go on caribbean vacations.

Is there anything that isn't ban-able or arrest-able that common citizens can do to stop this trend of assault by law enforcement? What recourse is left us if the government and its lackeys will go this far?

Posted by: Azenogoth at November 06, 2013 04:15 AM (f6ZLT)

195 A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.

I love the argument too that Cucinelli 'cheated' when the rules were changed back to a caucus. I'm old enough to remember when people railed that the primary process was resulting in candidates that were too right-wing (like Angle and O'Donnell), and we needed the sanity of a caucus where cooler heads and political insiders could make decisions because they know what is best.

I also love the Known Fact(tm) that Bolling would have won a primary. It's amazing how things always go according to plan if we take the opposite path.

It's almost as if the rules need to take whatever candidate the moderates think will win and make him the nominee. Why oh why do these pesky 'purists' insist on doing things and having opinions? Can't they just be zombies that vote for what we desire?

Aw fuck it. I don't even care anymore. Hopefully somebody creates an actual opposition party. Until then we're screwed.

197 The real reason Republicans lost in VA. All States should have a runoff law if no candidate gets 50%. Bill Clinton never got 50% of the vote. 228 You know, maybe we Tea Party supporters... with our nutty ideas about reducing Government spending to bring down the deficit and making the Government actually follow the Constitution... should just fold our tents and give up because we just can't win elections.

And we should just quietly let politics be run by smart insiders who know how to win elections... like Senator Brown, Senator Berg, Senator Thompson, Senator Mack, Senator Wilson, Senator Allen, Senator Rehberg, Senator Fiorina, Senator DeWine, Senator Wilson, Governor McKenna, and of course, President McCain.

I counted all the campaign mail I received in the last couple of months.  I received about eight times more mail from the McAwful campaign than the Cuccinelli campaign.

All of the McAwful ads were attack ads; Cuccinelli's ads focused on his business endorsements and work as AG.

The worst part was shoulder surfing the wife's facebook feed and seeing the amount of people - grown adults with kids mind you - in the area who voted for Sarvis because they didn't like the two candidates.

I hate people.  Democrats especially, but as of now, pretty much all people are on my hate list.

250 To be honest, I expected Cuccinelli to lose. You can't run someone who has said anything mildly problematic/too far right on social issues in purple or blue states and expect a win.

Most people I talked to in Virginia were all about how he hated gays, wanted to ban blow jobs, and would force women to have rape babies.

It doesn't matter if any of that was true or not -- he said one stupid thing (the bill regarding when life starts), and that should have made him ineligible in any rational person's mind to win a state-wide election in a purple/blue state. People didn't think that he would be demonized and have that parlayed to low-information voters or to convince people who vote hot-button social issues to come and vote against him. They were wrong, now we have Gov. McAuliffe.

257 >>Obamacare is the law of the land. McCain is a dick. I don't think thats even debatable. But Obamacare is literally the worst law to come down the pike in decades. As even Daniel Patrick Moynihan noted years ago the only way social legislation this large every gets sustained is with broad bi-partisan support. The law is already falling apart with Obama being exposed as a liar. His support is cratering and Dems are already bailing on him. Landrieu is trying to introduce legislation in the Senate saying that Obama promised people they could keep their health insurance and a promise is a promise. She sees the handwriting on the wall and is sprinting away from this law. And its only going to get worse for the Dems. Its not so much the women's vote that is crushing us although we need to do better there. Its the young vote where we need to do much better. And no group is going to get hammered harder by this law than the young. Obamacare is an electoral gift to conservatives and all Republicans. There is no better example of the destructive nature of big government liberalism.

The problem is McAwful will use the governorship as a bully pulpit for Hillary.  That is his main - no, only - goal.  To get Hillary into the White House.

Anything else is gravy.  And trust me, the House of Delegates isn't going to stop him from trying to pull VA as left as possible.  That's the plan - you swing for the fences, but if you end up with a single or a double.  No biggie.  Let the next guy drive in the run.

That's how they "progess" - ask for the moon but are OK with little incremental progress.  Before you know it, VA will be like CA or NY.

Seriously, go back and reread the first piece and note all the numbers given are notable for the exclusion of any amounts from the RNC. That jumped out at me immediately and I found it quite telling. Then the other Geraghty piece was posted and it was obvious that the exclusion was intentional as it eviscerated the premise of his prior piece. I'm sorry, but you cannot claim that Cuccinelli was not abandoned by the party when at least a portion of the party, indeed that portion which may properly be deemed The Party, provided 1/3 the amount of the support as previously given. You simply cannot. You may attempt to explain why that decision was made and that explanation may even be reasonable. But to state, point blank, that it is a fantasy that Cuccinelli was not given the same level of support by the RNC is nothing less than a rejection of objective reality.

Sure, Romney and Bush can make mouth noises, but when he is attacked by Brooks, Rubin, and other local commetariat, as well as Rove who quote, "Would put my money on Terry to win" you have to ask yourself - what if these people hadn't spent their time attacking or giving aid and sustenance to the real enemy? Not  just  the  money  but  some  "loyal"  Republican  moderates  openly  supported  McOffal  and  worked  for  his  campaign.  Yet  it's  the  cons  who  need  to  shut  up  and  vote  party  line  when  a  Rino  is  the  candidate.

292 Basically, the GOP establishment thinks they're playing chess, and was worth sacrificing a knight (Cucinelli) because that way they can advance their rook (Christie) to threaten the Queen (Hillary).

And while they are doing this, the Democrats are playing, "F--k your stupid chess game," and raising money from celebrities and billionaires so they can run ads claiming every Republican candidate is Ariel Castro.

295 Now, I'm not saying that Cuccinelli was the worst candidate, terribad, or anything. But just that, strategically, playing him was a weak hand. He may have been the best of a series of weak hands (I vaguely remember the VA Republican Governor field and thinking: Well, I didn't want the governor mansion again anyway), but we really need to look into recruiting and grooming candidates that fit their districts/states better so that single statements don't turn off huge chunks of the electorate.

298 >>I'd go even further as some on the podcasts have stated: if handled more intelligently than the Repubs are probably capable of doing, this could lead to a significant rollback of the welfare state. I've been saying this for months. Obamacare needs to be framed not just as a destructive health insurance overreach but as an example of what liberalism is all about, intrusive, unwanted control over individual freedoms. Its much easier to make that case to LIV and others with a real life example rather just speaking in the abstract. Tie it to the growth in food stamps, welfare, everything that Obama has expanded massively. Nobody in the country is going to escape this law and the vast majority will be affected negatively. We can use this and it would be criminally stupid not to.

Nope, considering that sex education now starts in early grade school with a carefully crafted message of "Boys and Girls, we want you to have sex, lots and lots of safe, happy, happy sex with your special someone using a free school supplied condom."

Followed in junior high by, "Susie, what is your favorite condom color?  Are we giving you and Bobby enough free condoms?  If the condom fails, you can get that mistake corrected UNLESS an evil Republican does something to you."

Then driven home in high school and college with, "Susie, now that you are having lots and lots of safe, happy sex with all comers, show me on the doll where the evil Republicans want to control your body?"

327 did Blaster ever back up his statement? Cite any reference? Posted by: shredded chi at November 06, 2013 08:27 AM (bHEwy) Let's do a reality check. Cuccinelli and his LT Governor candidate finished less than a point apart. There was no Libertarian candidate for LT Governor. McAuliffe finished about 7 points behind his LT Governor - Sarvis took 6.5% of the vote. Now, presumably, EW Jackson as an African American preacher whose positions on homosexuality and abortion (to which is attributed Cuccinelli's loss) are even more demonstrative, would have performed much worse than Cuccinelli - yet their vote totals are much closer than McAuliffe and Northam. Why did Northam get so many more votes than McAuliffe? In part because the Dems did not really like McAuliffe, they rejected him - roundly - as a candidate in 2009. Northam's difference over McAuliffe is larger than all of Sarvis's votes (about the same as all of Sarvis's votes plus the difference between Jackson and Cuccinelli). And everyone presumes that Libertarians were fooled into thinking that Sarvis was really a Libertarian conservative. And that people who would ordinarily vote for a Republican would instead vote for the Libertarian as a protest. I don't think that is necessarily true. I think the people who voted Libertarian were as aware of Sarvis's positions as those who voted Republican and Democrat (which means not much, probably). As for sources other than me? Here is an analysis of exit polls from Fox: Was the Libertarian candidate Sarvis a spoiler? In a word: no. In a straight two-way matchup, voters preferred McAuliffe to Cuccinelli by two points. ThatÂ’s almost identical to the final outcome. In fact, Sarvis drew from independents and moderates, and took at least as many votes from the Democrat as the Republican. http://fxn.ws/1hi7F87

>>but we really need to look into recruiting and grooming candidates that fit their districts/states better so that single statements don't turn off huge chunks of the electorate.<<

First, look at the returns.  McAwful won by a very small margin.  Cuccinelli didn't turn off "huge chunks of the electorate."

Second, McAwful doesn't really fit any district in the state of VA.  He's a DNC insider who was planted and groomed to win the VA governor seat to help make VA blue (in general) and help Hillary specifically.

Lastly, the problem was money.  McAwful and his DNC corporate power spent a shitload of money to make low information voters think Cuccinelli was a misogynist who would enslave the gays.

For crying out loud, the NOVA Tech Group was ready to hand their endorsement to McAwful but McAwful was so fucking bad, and Cuccinelli was so prepared and thoughtful, that they switched.

McAwful didn't care.  Why?  The DNC has a new strategy that is paying good dividends: spend a lot of money on lies.  Frame the election around bullshit "War on [Insert Here]"

Having the corporate Repubs and Tea Partiers not on the same page helps the DNC and probably cost Cuccinelli the election.

350 The problem is that Cuccinelli still lost. The things the candidate CAN control are what we need to focus on. It doesn't matter if the other side lies, raises more money, or the party is disorganized. What the candidate can do is not say things that will be easily turned into: "Cuccinelli wants to ban blow jobs." Or: "Cuccinelli wants to make it so you can't divorce your abusive, rapist husband."

Because people will believe these stupid statements. And Republicans keep offering up candidates who say these sorts of things, whereas Democrats do what you mentioned -- they get someone like McAulliffe who they can keep from saying anything that would immediately turn off the middle [for example, they won't ever just up and write a "Guns to Plowshares" bill. They'll couch it in language designed to make it appealing, or at least, not immediately frightening to the average voter.]

I have not been "guessing" at what happened in VA. I was predicting, and doing so accurately. My own analysis comes close to Domenech's on #4 and #7.

#4: Want to win independent swing voters? Don't have a history of rhetorically bashing gays. That dog don't hunt in that voting blog. Candidates can argue all they want about how homosexual acts are "contrary to natural law", as Cuccinelli has. The reality is that, when it comes to swing voters, that argument is being had not with the opposing candidate, but with Will and Grace, and it was over a long time ago, sorry.

#7: Want to win libertarian voters? Don't shit down their necks to where they feel compelled to cast a meaningless protest vote. Especially not when crafty liberals have deliberately put up a sockpuppet candidate specifically to draw away libertarians. Reagan specifically reached out to libertarians and guess what, Reagan BLOODY WELL WON ELECTIONS with it. How many more do the modern GOP need to lose to learn?

I will admit to struggling to respond to the comments here that women are idiots who vote with their ladybits and not their brains when, unfortunately, it is my experience that outside the 'Ettes, that is frequently true.

Again, sadly true, My  Queen.

I've lost  friends and gigs over politics  too. And when you can't persuade otherwise rational people of the  falsity of smears, we are truly lost as a nation  (see Palin, Sarah, "I can see Russia from my house.")

We were the last stronghold of freedom. By not standing  up to our enemies and allowing this type of  bullshit to go unchallenged, we're about to see it disappear.  My last resort is  kinda like that dude in the Bible who said, "I don't know what everyone else is going to do,  but I'll follow what I know is right." Or something like that. It's fallen back to the individual to live as rightly as possible while watching   society  crumble.

And the saddest part is, it never had to happen. Our enemies told us what they were going to do to us, and did it. No one stopped them when they could have. I fear it's too late now, and all I can do is just wait out what little time I have left on this  Earth and hope that  maybe  one day, after I'm gone, some spark of freedom will   reignite.

End times much? It sure looks that way to me. I've never seen so much bullshit sweep the world with such speed.

384 @85 You're so wrong dude. Social issues don't kill the GOP it's running away from the Social issues that allows the Dems to win. Maggie Gallagher got it exactly right with her comments on the "truce" strategy. If conservatives don't talk about abortion, they'll still be tarred with the "War on Woman"brush every time there's an election. Far better to take the offensive and talk about how Democratic abortion extremists like McAuliffe and Wendy Davis won't protect womens' health by refusing to ensure that abortions are carried out in safe conditions. The ads write themselves "Kermit Gosnell was convicted for the murder of... Prosecutors say the conditions in his clinic were... Abortion extremist Terry McAuliffe has stated that he won't put in place safeguards that would prevent what happened in Philidelphia from happening here in Virginia." As for making it harder to get a divorce, I think Cuccinelli would have benefited from discussing the problems with no-fault divorce - namely that the no-fault regime treats a spouse who breaks his or her vows on an equal moral footing with the the spouse who did not. It's a basic issue of fairness. But if the default position is "don't discuss it" then the issue won't be debated and will be viewed through the prism the Democrats give us. If the only message people hear is the fearmongering of the Democrats then they'll be fearful of voting for the conservative candidate. If the conservative explains his views, these voters may still disagree with him, but the fear will be dissipated.

But, with actual stupid politicians out there, like Akin, for example, you need to know that you're playing against a stacked deck. Republicans need to accept that's the field right now, and it will take some time to level it.

Going in with a guy who is going to be hit hard on that angle and not have a good counter is just bad strategy. Cuccinelli didn't even have a strong counter; McDonnell got hit the same way last time, but he put out his wife and his daughters and showed that the rhetoric over his thesis was stupid. Cuccinelli's defense, was as far as I can tell, just: "Well, I'm not going to do that if I'm governor."

393 The thing that Republican candidates of both sexes MUST internalize is that the vast majority of womyn have been converted to gender politics because of the sexual revolution, to wit:

1) All Recorded history until the 1960s

Women used to receive a constant and unrelenting message that their reproductive organs were not a playground and that sex was going to result in a baby that would have to be brought up.  So if a woman was going to use her reproductive organs carelessly there were consequences and both she and any child would suffer because there would be no husband to help with childrearing.  A husband and wife team was civilization's solution for raising children in a responsible manner.  It was not perfect, but, it worked a large enough percentage of the time, that society was completely invested in it as a strategy.

2) History since the 1960s

Womyn now receive a constant and unrelenting message that their reproductive organs are a playground that occasionally gets invaded by a  playground bully that must be dealt with posthaste by an abortion.  Guys have no stake in this--they are to show up to play, but, the womyn decide everything else including who lives to be born based on a set of arcane and self-contradictory rules.

Despite all those bad things, Cuccinelli was closer at the end than Romney. It's actually a pretty awesome result, despite the loss, since it essentially proves ObamaCare is going to be a massive national issue for Democrats next year. "The Republican National Committee spent three times as much in 2009 on the same race as they did this year.

The Chamber of Commerce spent one million dollars in the last GovernorÂ’s race, and not one dime on Cuccinelli.
While its often claimed that Tea Party candidates do poorly among independents, Cuccinelli actually won independents by 9 points, 47 percent to 38 percent.
“McAuliffe outraised Cuccinelli by almost $15 million,” and in the last weeks of the campaign, this left Cuccinelli with nearly no media exposure.
Even Pl0tico wonders if Cuccinelli was beginning to turn the tide against the “War on Women” narrative, as he drove down McAuliffeÂ’s lead among women from 24% in polling to 9%."

Yeah, but Virginia law doesn't look at fairness - it looks as what's in the best interest of the children (if there are kids involved).  After that, it's about fairness especially if both spouses work.

Cuccinelli should have left the divorce topic off the table.  There are a legion of problems with taking on no-fault divorce.  One of which is that it ensures more lawyers make more money.  Even if it is a bit better morally than the no-fault regime, a Cuccinelli system of divorce would force people to use lawyers to draft and defend their reasons.  Lawyers aren't cheap.

Lots of people, well-meaning people, religious people, moral people, etc., make mistakes with marriage.  No-fault divorce isn't and shouldn't go anywhere.

Two problems 1) The pro-life contingent is still a needed part of the coalition. 2) The media (an arm of the DNC) will continue to hammer until a candidate breaks, because they need that for their loved candidates (and ratings.)

The thing is, I don't really believe the race was ever 10 points in favor of McAuliffe.  He made plans to have Clinton/Obama come stump for him when he was ostensibly the winner.

So Geraghty's excuse that the national party didn't want to flush money to support a candidate down 10 points doesn't hold water for me.  Polls cited by the media tend to be garbage up until one-two days before the election.  What did the internal GOP polls say?  Did they even bother to take polls?  Because I'm pretty sure that, based on McAuliffe's behavior two weeks ago, Dem internal polls were showing this to be a very close race.

One thing is for sure - this was a winnable race and the Establishment didn't bother trying to win it.

436 I can understand the intellectual argument for abortion in the case of rape.  I do not understand the similar argument in case of incest.

If by incest, you mean a family member sexually assaulting a minor girl, that is already rape and can be covered by that previous allowance.

If by incest you mean sex between two consenting adults who are related, why does that warrant abortion?

Consider that in theory before I could have merely followed you at a distance (without interaction) for the bulk of the day. Possible, and IIRC not actually unconstitutional or illegal. But highly impractical to do on a massive scale. Now we can do the same thing in effect with cameras and tech. We're still only watching public places but the tech makes it efficient (and practical). So there is a question of "where and how is the line drawn." Since the activity is the same, but it's fundamentally changed by the technology.

466 As much as it sucks to lose in VA I don't think they are doing cartwheels at the DNC today. They outspent the Republicans 2 - 1, the blanketed the state with Bubba and the Shrill, Biden and Obama, they of course had the media beating Cuccinelli daily as a neanderthal, the had the gov't shutdown to run on in a state with a huge federal gov't population, and they still barely squeaked over the line. Obamacare almost gave Cucc the momentum to come back from a double digit deficit in a couple weeks. That is ominous and there is no spin for it. I'm puzzled that Cucc, the first guy to bring suit against Obamacare, didn't make that the centerpiece of his campaign. If he had hammered that night and day for months we might have had a different outcome.

484 "Jaws, I can answer A. He did A to win over social conservatives. Lean right, move to the center during the general doesn't work on social issues because you will be nailed hard for it."

The SoCons had better find a way to be content to hear a Republican simply say he will leave them the hell alone to do what they do rather than pound the pulpit proclaiming to be a crusader for their particular brand of moral purity.   If not, we'll ALL repeatedly get screwed by the likes of McAwful and TFG.

The same goes with the libertarian end insisting on the second coming of Ayn Rand or nothing.

It's just so stupid and self-destructive.

If you're looking for an American revival, stop looking toward the GOP.

GOP leadership doesn't even want to talk anymore about Obamacare.

This party is the probably the most pathetic and self-defeating opposition force during the time of the greatest need for opposition in America history.

I despise them.

487 Bush also exploded the size of the federal government before Obama, and that is the biggest driver of VA turning blue. I don't buy the name recognition argument. McAuliffe has been a fixture on Sunday shows as a Clinton surrogate. There was no missed opportunity to define him. He is an unapologetic liberal. The problem was letting Sarvis gain so much ground. The establishment response and money came late in the game. Plus McDonnell's scandal and subsequent absence factored into what could only hurt a weak candidate. Sorry, Cuccinelli never broke out and sold the public on himself, and the state party could not convince libertarians or moderates that they were for freedom and smaller government.

488 Gabe - your arguments aren't making sense.  You assert that Cuccinelli's loss had nothing to do with his abandonment by the GOP establishment, yet both the articles (Federalist and NRO) that you link insist that a major reason why Cuccinelli lost was because he was massively outspent and outfunded - which is a direct result of the GOP establishment pulling the plug on him.

Face facts, people.  Cuccinelli didn't lose because he was a "SoCon warrior" who scared women.  He lost because he was saddled with poor candidates down ticket, leftover ill will from McDonnell's scandals, and because the GOP decided it would rather have a Democrat in office than a conservative Republican.

McDonnell's scandal? If people think that's a scandal, wait till they get a load of Terry McAuliffe!

Yeah, but you can't run a current election on the basis of future what-ifs.

Gabe wrote, "Oh, and despite the fantasies of people who, er, can't read, it wasn't that the party abandoned Cuccinelli."

Based on what I've been reading up to and now following the Virginia election, yours seems to be the minority opinion, Gabe, unless you consider National Review's Jonah Goldberg and Maggie Gallagher wild-eyed fantasists. You know how those Romney-endorsing extremists are over at the National Review.

The GOP and its weaselly Whig Establishment leadership abandoned Cuccinelli just as they'll abandon (or covertly oppose) every Tea Party and conservative Republican at every opportunity. They've been bought and paid for by the GOP's big money donors so hot for immigration 'reform' and the cheap labor it brings they can't stand it, and consider those of us who comprise the conservative base of the GOP--specifically those candidates and incumbents who represent our views--as standing in the way.  Establishment figures such as McCain, like the Democrats, consider us 'whacko bird' extremists. News: it isn't extreme to oppose a stealth socialist takeover of the country or to deny the AGW state religion or to consider ninth-month moment of birth abortion as de facto infanticide.

So yeah, the GOP Establishment abandoned Cuccinelli, and they'll do it again to other conservative candidates because they're stupid, unprincipled, greedy and weak. A committed, straight-ticket voting Republican, I'm coming around to the idea of a leadership purge or a third party split.

You're absolutely right. Patriots do not let it burn. Patriots put out the fire and go after the arsonists.

495 RE: "Based on what I've been reading up to and now following the Virginia election, yours seems to be the minority opinion, Gabe,  . . . "

Meh -- there's a reason for that!  Mr. Malor seems to want to believe other things were more important in the Virginia race.

The only important fact for me -- and for all conservatives who will continue running conservatives and not voting for non-conservative Republicans is: "The RNC spent $9 million in 2009 to win and spent $3 million this time, pulling money out of Virginia, to lose by a hair. The RNC truly screwed up in Virginia this time and no amount of spinning can distract from that screw up."

That's what I will remember -- and no amount of spinning and blaming will cause us to forget it.

Every month or so the Republican establishment stabs in the back more conservatives like Ted Cruz, and caves on the shutdown, and refuses to back conservatives in races . . . and more and more conservatives like me refuse to vote for them in major elections.

I won't elect people who are wearing our uniforms and entering into our strategy discussions and then shooting us in the back.  I don't vote for people whose values are antithetical to mine, who are actively and malevolently opposed to limited government and individual liberty, and who yet wear our uniforms and pretend to be on our team.  I won't give them an ounce more credibility and authority, nor will I elect them to office.

And every year that goes by there are more like me.

The Republican Party *will* be reformed.  And it will be reformed by conservatives who refuse to vote for liberals masquerading as conservatives.

496 Lost another one to Social Conservatives. Keep it up with the anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage plank. You'll continue to get punished at the polls. But hey! As long as the gays aren't Married and abortion is illegal, it's okay that fiscal conservatism goes down, right? You can give up financial freedom just as long as you're fighting the good fight!

497 Posted by: GMan at November 06, 2013 08:27 AM (sxq57)When people say 'Social conservatives should not push their beliefs' they are really saying is, 'Give up on abortion and don't oppose the Gay Mafia.'It's similar logic to the Amnesty pushers - they'll love us if we change our policies. What I'm saying is, you've already lost on abortion and gay marriage. It's over. At this point they are political cancer on fiscal conservatives.

Currently, the Democrats advocate abortion up to and including the ninth-month moment of birth, an extreme position even by European standards. If the GOP grants the validity of that position, what good is it? Even now, it's clear the implications of Obamacare will include those death panels that Sarah Palin warned about in 2008, where healthcare is rationed and approved or denied on the whim of a bureaucratic construct. The way things are going, many of our elderly (and others of negligible worth to the State) will be taking that Liverpool pathway so popular in the UK. We're talking euthanasia here. You think we should shut up about that, too? Too much of a social issue for you?

A national political party is as much a moral as it is a political association. The Left has a moral vision. Either we counter that vision or we lose to it.

499 I love the dissonance of Gabe. 1) Read the Domenech piece. It tells the real story of why we lost. Note, that the important factors are numbers 2,3, and 8 (I, Gabe, am going to pretend factor 1 doesn't exist) 2) Read this Geraghty piece, where he clearly explains the money being spent by the Party to help KC was significant and that the party did not abandon him. The neat thing here is that THE VERY FIRST POINT in Domenechs piece points out that the RNC spent 1/3 of what it spent in Virginia four years ago, which flies directly in the face the NRO piece. Which would be fine, if Gabe presented it that way. But nope, with his usual snark (er, eh, those that can't read..LOLZ) Gabe misleads for about the umpteenth time in the last few months.

500 494 Gabe wrote, "Oh, and despite the fantasies of people who, er, can't read, it wasn't that the party abandoned Cuccinelli." ------------ The best part is that he links the Domenech piece, which he implores everyone to read, and that piece specifically points this out IN THE FIRST BULLET POINT. Notice, though, Gabe glosses right over that and says the points that matter are numbers 2, 3, and 8. Not that pesky little 1, the very first point Domenech makes.
