Happy Friday.

In 2013, white evangelicals accounted for 27% of VirginiaÂ’s electorate, down from 34% in 2009. They voted for Cuccinelli at the same rate as they did for McDonnell (a touch more than 8 in 10), there's just relatively fewer of them than there used to be.

National Review's Robert Costa (who is about to be WaPo's Robert Costa) talked to Cuccinelli's chief strategist, who thinks the shutdown crippled the campaign. "It sucked the oxygen out of the room. Instead of talking about Obamacare, we were talking about the shutdown." Folks discussed what the shutdown might do to the election next year, but didn't much think about what it'd do to the election right around the corner.

The GOP has plans for Obamacare replacement, or maybe plans to have plans for Obamacare replacement, but there doesn't seem to be a rush to line up behind any particular choice while Obamacare is in the middle of imploding.

Avik Roy dissects President Obama's mealy-mouthed apology and finds that in the course of sort-of apologizing for his campaign lie, "if you like it, you can keep it, period," he made a series of other misleading or outright false claims.

Have a great weekend.

5 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, November 08, 2013.  On this day in 1923 Adolf Hitler attempted, and failed, to seize control of the German government in the Beer Hall Putsch.  Just imagine how the world would have been different if The Germans had locked him up for life or executed him for treason.  FDR probably would have only served 2 terms and would not have been able to pack the court.  "For the want of nail" is applicable here.

A LOT of stuff today.  In fact after I hit 5 pp I started skipping sites and still wound up with 7 pp.

10 Marines to take on mission in Nigeria to suppress pirates.  Why does this not fill be with confidence?  They have cut funding to the bone and cut the forces. Now step up more missions.  That will result in a small underpowered contingent who will be left hanging if attacked by a large force.  We should have a Constitutional amendment that says Democrats cannot deploy troops anywhere unless war is declared.  Â….. Wait, I believe it already says that for all troops.  What they need to do is deploy the Navy to escort ships in a convoy.  And when the pirates appear, blow them out of the water and move on.

11 This makes me want to puke.

New U.S. ambassador to the UN Samantha Power didn't waste her diplomatic skills on Vietnam veterans at a New York speech, praising actress Jane Fonda for "being outspoken on behalf" of her convictions.[b/]

They tried Tokyo Rose and convicted her of treason and she was forced to make radio broadcasts as a prisoner of the Japanese.  This [expletive deleted] gave direct aid and comfort to the enemy.  I am waiting for her to die, hopefully before I am too old and sick to travel, so I can round up a Vietnam vet contingent to go piss on her grave.

45 @Redistrict: Just updated my error spreadsheet to reflect likely swing of roughly 1,500 net votes in @SenMarkHerring's direction... ---- All because of ballots that haven't been counted yet, but are supposedly uncounted in the most democratic section of Fairfax County. Can't say I'm shocked. These days, they ALWAYS seem to find these big piles of votes solely in the most democratic areas of every state. In this case, it doesn't even appear to be a transcription error, but rather is uncounted absentee ballots. Let that sink in for a minute. All the other absentees around Virginia were counted by Wednesday morning, except (supposedly) the most democratic part if Fairfax County. And nobody noticed till now? This isn't a small error.

79 From WSJ:

"He [Mitch McConnell] refers to the Senate Conservatives Fund. "That's the one I'm prepared to be specific about." The fund "has elected more Democrats than the Democratic Senatorial Committee over the last three cycles." The group is targeting Mr. McConnell with ads slamming his leadership during the shutdown. "Right now they're on the air in obvious coordination with Harry Reid's super PAC—Harry Reid's!—in the same markets, at roughly the same amount, at the same time."

But says he isn't worried about his own race: "I don't wanna be overly cocky, but I'm gonna be the Republican nominee next year."

Are members of the tea party on the ground being fooled by operators, profit makers and cynics? "Yes," he said, followed by a brief silence. He declined to say more, but emphasized again that "I make a distinction between the leaders and the followers. I mean, I think a lot of well-meaning people are sending money to organizations having no idea they're gonna spend all that money against Republicans. Because they're being misled." "

Get that you yobs?  You're too fucking stupid to know what's what.  Just leave it to Mitch McConnell.  He's got your back - even if you're an idiot.

I'm going to take issue with this.

Did we get paid eventually?  Yes.

Was my mortgage due BEFORE we were paid?  Yes.  I'm 33.  I'm about three years removed from a divorce, and quite a few Morons here know what that does to your savings account.

It was a quirk of the calendar that my mortgage came due at precisely the worst time for me.  That is no one's fault, it just is.  To say I didn't mind not being allowed to go to work though... I begged to be declared essential.  I needed to be paid correctly and on time, and I'm not the only one.

I despise the leviathan as much as anyone, and the biggest reason I'm a fed at the moment is because math is rather high on my people-priority list.

We are now seeing a number of stories positing a variety of reasons that Cuccinelli lost.

I think that I am just going to stick with the "stabbed in the back" theory.

What to do about it?  The answer that I am currently going with is to take revenge on moderate squishes as payback for Cuccinelli.

Party loyalty either goes both ways or it goes no way.  Moderate squishes want to deny resources and votes to conservatives?  OK.  Fine.  Let's see if you can round up enough moderate squishes to vote for your candidates.  If you ever decide that you want to win elections again, you can demonstrate that with actions after a conservative beats your preferred moderate in a primary.  Until then, I am going for purity.

Yeah, I loooooove being told how stupid I am by people who are, with an extraordinarily high probability, objectively far stupider than I.   It's almost as much fun as being told I'm not actually a woman because I don't vote correctly.

I do not comprehend this piss off the base strategy and I'm speaking in a purely Machiavellian sense here.  A candidate needs the largest coalition possible to win.   Many of those window licking mouth breathers will be a candidate's most loyal foot soldiers if the proper platitudes are spoken.   Speak.  Them.   Make the pointless gestures.   Appear as if you are taking those concerns seriously and attempting to address them even, nay, especially, if you don't care about it.

Now, from a less Machiavellian position, it could be that such Kinsley gaffes are occurring so frequently now because said base isn't actually stupid and is fed up with being played in precisely the manner set forth above.

We sat in our hide while the LT stuttered on the radio, shoved his map between my face and the gunsight and begged me to call for fire, until our dismounts were wiped out and OPFOR crunchies were actually STANDING ON TOP OF OUR VEHICLE. 3) Why? Because our platoon leader is an incompetent coward who will get us rolled up and murdered in detail if we have to go to war. 4) What do we change to improve? Get a new platoon leader. "Get down and do some fucking pushups, Sergeant! " "Yeah, THAT'LL fucking happen." Platoon sergeant separates us. End scene. Epilogue: LT is transferred to another company where he receives a letter of reprimand for crushing a civilian car with his Bradley.

I had savings, I made it out fine.  Doesn't change the fact that you're getting jerked around.  But I had two people in my office on the edge of a bankruptcy filing because they had emptied their savings account to care for a terminally ill parent (in one case) and a child with a bad MRSA infection (in the other).  They were screwed.

Defined narrowly, epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief. As the study of knowledge, epistemology is concerned with the following questions: What are the necessary and sufficient conditions of knowledge? What are its sources? What is its structure, and what are its limits? As the study of justified belief, epistemology aims to answer questions such as: How we are to understand the concept of justification? What makes justified beliefs justified? Is justification internal or external to one's own mind? Understood more broadly, epistemology is about issues having to do with the creation and dissemination of knowledge in particular areas of inquiry. This article will provide a systematic overview of the problems that the questions above raise and focus in some depth on issues relating to the structure and the limits of knowledge and justification.

Why would they seek him out to run in NH? They think base will hold their nose and vote for moderates and theyÂ’ll attract independents. It hasnÂ’t worked out well in past two presidential elections. Establishment never learns. This is why SCF and The Madison Project endorsed Bevin.

One doesn't even need to be unsympathetic to  those living paycheck to paycheck to understand that you can't decide whether the shutdown was good or not based on how it affected one's personal finances.

The matter is, we have decisions  to make regarding the size of government, and you are either of the opinion that government is too large, or you're not.  If you are a federal employee, you can believe the government is too large, AND worry about where your next mortgage payment is coming from.

What you can't do though, is be opposed to the shutdown BECAUSE you're worried about where your next mortgage payment is coming from, and call yourself a proponent of smaller government.

I find it the height of absurdity for  anyone, including Cuccinelli's  chief campaign strategist, to try to  separate the shutdown fight from Obamacare.  The two are one and the same.

(climbs down off soapbox, and gets ready for work)

196 173 No. I'm not. I ask it because it's relevant. Scroll up. I'm coming off of a divorce. Ask around - those tend to destroy your savings. I've got one year of fed job under my belt. My mortgage payment is about 35% of my monthly income. Cut that income in half, and that percentage skyrockets.

But hey, I'm part of the problem, right? The TruCons see me in the exact same light in which Obama sees the people losing their health insurance.

Bumps in the road.

No, but they can withhold money.  And they did.

The race was close enough that any one of a number of things could have pushed it over the top.  None of those things were done and Democrats won a race that could have been won by a Republican.

When I start seeing party loyalty coming in my direction, I'll start showing in in the other direction.  Until then, it is a matter of if the Republican candidate is pure enough to suit me.  See, that is the thing about trust.  Once you lose it by short sighted betrayal, you have to work extra hard to get it back.

204 I wonder if it had more to do with population growth in VA and the massive expansion of the federal government that's been going on under Obama. Evangelicals aren't actually declining but whole new groups of voters are being imported. This is what amnesty will do on a national scale. Population is growing but not that fast. This isn't a demographic problem. It's a voter attraction problem. If the GOP tells evangelicals that they find them distasteful, they should not be surprised if the tastes change. Remember, evangelicals were a big part of the Reagan coalition and they were new to politics. Historically the kingdom they are concerned about is not on earth. Getting them involved was how the Republicans came back from 40 years in the Wilderness. Hanging out a sign that their kind is not wanted here has its consequences. If the GOP thinks that it will make up the difference out of gays and single women by banishing the religious, I hope their computer models are well tuned.

Since 2009, when King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia warned visiting US special envoy to the Middle East Dennis Ross that if Iran crossed the threshold, "we will get nuclear weapons", the kingdom has sent the Americans numerous signals of its intentions.

In 2013, white evangelicals accounted for 27% of VirginiaÂ’s electorate, down from 34% in 2009. They voted for Cuccinelli at the same rate as they did for McDonnell (a touch more than 8 in 10), there's just relatively fewer of them than there used to be.

Fewer in total, or merely fewer showing up at the polls?  There is an important difference between the two - fewer showing up can be fixed, while fewer in total cannot.

What I find hilarious is that you posted a snippet from the SEP article that, if you actually understood what you're reading, might as well say that "sven doesn't know what he's talking about."  How you say you are using the word is quite different from how the word is supposed to be used.  I have some idea, because I went to grad school, in philosophy, and worked with an actual epistemologist.

And assuming you're actually telling the truth about candidates you gave to, good for you.  But there were also some members of the "donor class" you hate so much that sucked it up and still gave to Cuccinelli, so the game can be played both ways.  And if you're in the middle of the whole "Let It Burn" and "this party, of which I am no longer a part" and "Let's get rid of all the RINOS" crusades (where RINO is defined as "any Republican who does even just one thing that I don't like"), then yeah, you're as much a part of the problem as the establishment guys who take their money and go home.

The NR writer's a didlo, no arguments.  He's also wrong.

Maybe my anecdotal experiences don't count too much, but there are only a handful of people in my office who weren't stretched thin.  Everyone GS-11 and below was hurting.

Systemic problems with the way we as a society view and handle money?  Probably.

That still leads us right back to what I said earlier.  We're feds.  We're SUPPOSED to be the casualties in the TruCon offensive.  Quite a few people here see 'federal workers' as a single entity, much like Democrats see Republicans (and especially conservatives) as a single [racist] entity.  We're all leeches, we're all the problem and we're all obstacles to be removed.

That's simply not true.  As with almost everything else, there are degrees, variations and individual circumstances which are immeasurable in their diversity.

Also, in case of another shut down it might be good for you to know that you can go up to 15 days past your due date before getting a late fee and you can go up to 30 days before going to collections. You can also call your mortgage company and ask for an extension, they will usually do this once a year.

254 ^^^^^ This ^^^^^ Posted by: Washington Nearsider at November 08, 2013 08:12 AM (fwARV) *fistbump* Everyone pursues their rational self-interest. Which is fine, I just generally don't wish people ill based on their membership in a certain economic or professional class. Evidently this makes me "not conservative." Posted by: Sean Bannion at November 08, 2013 08:18 AM (JpC1K) You know how I view it? As being akin to being me and reading some of the more, hmmm, how to elide this, lively discussions of certain social issues. People tend to not want to accept that those things that they are saying, they are saying about me. I leave it to your imagination to fill in the contents of the comments I type and then delete. Or, to step away from that example, how about the generational wars or the kerfuffle last night about teenage boys? When discussing broad generalities, specific counters get caught in the same net. It's incredibly difficult to be the counter example and to try not to take broad statements as personal attacks. I know my success at that is intermittent, at best.

268 I just got a call from the nurse at the rehab my brother is in. He had a fever of 102 and they called EMTs to take him to ER, he refused. Fever went up to 104. They finally persuaded him to go to the hospital. I called him yesterday, he was in good sprits and is having both PT and OT, they stopped both in late August. He made some improvements, moving his toe and then all his toes the day after I left ME from my visit there. I called hotel to ask it they had openings week of Thanksgiving. Man told me they do and if IÂ’m going heÂ’ll reduce room rate by $10 night or more if IÂ’m going to visit relative in hospital. They were full one night on October 23, the day I was there. A lot of hotels were booked because people go there to see the foliage. Now IÂ’m going to have to wait for them to tell me he still has pneumonia. I told Paul last night IÂ’d go there day before Thanksgiving if he continues to make progress in PT. He said they were impressed with progress heÂ’s made since last time they worked with him. He wasnÂ’t back in rehab 8 days.

285 @ 198

"The race was close enough that any one of a number of things could have pushed it over the top. None of those things were done and Democrats won a race that could have been won by a Republican."

Like, if the government hadn't been shut down?  Like, if the Republican candidate had been nominated in a primary instead of at a convention?  And sure, like if the money men had given at their normal rates.  But again, this is a sword that cuts both ways.

"When I start seeing party loyalty coming in my direction, I'll start showing in in the other direction."

And I'm sure you'll feel justified when Democrats maintain and expand their hold on both power and the federal government.  It doesn't matter if it leads to less freedom for us and greater misery, debt, and waste for the nation as a whole.  I mean, at least you stuck it to the nasty RINO establishment types, amirite?

Oh, but Mike Castle stayed home and wouldn't support Christine O'Donnell publicly (and other, similar cases)!  Well, so the hell what?  If Mike Castle jumped off a bridge, would you follow him out of spite?  You are judged based on YOUR actions -- what makes it immature and whiny when he does it, and a marvelously principled stand when you do it?

If my district nominates nothing but Todd Akin-esque candidates all down the ticket next cycle, I will privately bitch about having to vote for them.  But I still will, even if I don't think they're a good candidate, as long as I think they're the best candidate in the field.  Because that's what we should be concerned with.  No protest votes, no staying home, because having someone that agrees with me 70%-80% of the time as my representative is far better than having someone who agrees with me 0-20% of the time.

Enough of this.  I'm going to work.

Cuccinelli was a bad candidate who was treated shoddily by Bolling and whose positions were grossly misrepresented by the Dems and who, yes, it's true, did not receive nearly the financial backing from the RNC as prior candidates and who was also in a race with a third party spoiler. As best I can tell, all of that is true and all of that contributed. Looking for some magic bullet solution is pointless. All of those areas need to be addressed. Yes, prioritizing the issues is important, but what I see is a lot of if only this then that. Well. Maybe. But probably not.

"I know a guy with a degree in philosophy. He cuts grass. Ever see a help wanted ad for Epistemologist?"

Well, I've seen quite a few job ads for epistemologists.  Do those count?

I'm perfectly willing to rag on philosophers, because I'd wager I've known more of them than you have and so I have a far greater contempt for them than any of you ever could.  That doesn't mean that philosophy itself isn't worth knowing -- read Ayn Rand's address to the graduating class at West Point for a great defense that it's the subject that matters most.  And when I see people misusing philosophical terms, I do take it upon myself to let them know.

If that strikes you as funny, fine.  And now I really do have to go to work.

You don't just rush into this situation - nope.  First you get upwind and open up the Emergency Response Guide.  With ObamaCare you sit back and take notes of what is going wrong and try and find out what is going to be tolerable after this charlie foxtrot is done setting off the secondaries.  And you enjoy watching the panic grow on the other side of the aisle as exaemplified by the senators meeting Obama and saying, in effect, "You arrogant fool, you've killed us all."

348 none of the arguments amidst the party bother me. we always argue with each other. we are not lockstep ideologues like liberals but a coalition party. we find our way, our compromise, a leader, then unite behind that with discipline. its the way we have always been. bitching about it shows you have no stomach for the fight, and that your point of view is failing. it also doesnt bother me since i view the gop as failshit anyway. the arguments are how we get from failshit to victory, probly through replacement. i bet the whigs went through exactly the same. the whole preston brooks caning incident, remember, was a whig beating down a republican abolitionist. it might get nastier still but you need to stick to your guns, whatever they may be. let the best in all of us win.

I think it is obvious.  The law was specifically and intentionally written so that EVERYONE's insurance would be canceled and then be forced on gov Obamacare, thus we have single payer.

The next steps would then be to nationalize all the health infrastructure. Thus we have a Communist healthcare system.

Sebelius will make the announcement in a speech at the Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy in Atlanta, spokesman Mark Weber said. The move will greatly increase access to mental health care and services for Americans. The Mental Health Parity Law of 2008 was signed by President George W. Bush.

That cuts out social "science" and probably (sadly) history. Hard science isn't my friend but I love biology -which requires chemistry. Je suis perdu.

Is THIS enough?

402 Your health insurance system is quite a puzzle for someone like me in another country to understand I've learnt a bit about how health insurance was added to wages when you had some kind of freeze on pay increases many years ago Perhaps I can help a little. Healthy employees are infinitely more desirable to an employer then sick ones. So employer paid insurance benefited both. As the economy improved under Reagan, Reagan, Bush, and still improved despite Clinton, it became more the norm to cover both the employee and his entire family. It added very little to the cost for the employer to do so, and insurance companies actually prefer to spread the risk across a larger base. Employers also realized that employees stayed with a company, and became more valuable, and had to consider the benefits 'package' before leaving one job for another. Some employees would still jump ship and go without insurance in order to earn more pay per hour. That was their choice. But employers could not be expected to cover everyone in the country, and as taxes on business increased to feed an ever bigger monster in DC, benefits began to be trimmed back. A very stupid politician by the name of Obama promised something to garner votes and succeeded. But his program is a failure of unprecedented dimensions.

I don't think feeling good in church is wrong.

I think, like OSP said, twisting things around to make the Gospel more to one's liking is the problem.  Actual Christians know that it's not all about them.

I don't think services need to be a miserable experience.  But if it takes the lack of any kind of dress code, lattes, a rock band, and a laser light show to get you into the service, then your faith is probably an inch deep anyway.

If you click that option you'll be able to play most videos but NoScript will still stop most threats. The best thing is that you don't even have to restart your browser after switching between settings. NoScript got so complex and intrusive I turned it off entirely for a while. I'm glad I tried the intermediate option. It makes NoScript behave like the earlier versions of it. Try it, you'll like it.

When the employer mandate gets close, and tens of millions are forced from their acceptable plans into Obamacare compliant crap, I would hope it opens up some eyes. Its hard enough dealing with insurance companies and doctors and pharmacies now add a layer of government scum to the mix. 465 I go to one of those churches. We meet in a movie theater. Our aim is to SPECIFICALLY minister to people who's faith is an inch deep.

Well then, you made my point.

You're doing God's work, no doubt.

-----------

It is not the church I would choose to go to if I were going to church for myself, that's true.  I prefer a much more traditional orthodox style of worship.  But I've come to realize that as an older established Christian it's not about me anymore, it's about the mission field.

Church is a hospital for sinners, not a country club for saints.

I do turn off noscript for playing videos, but I have NEVER been able to get a Fox video to play with this computer, even when using IE and none of those blocking programs.

I can get other videos to play though. Here's the other rub now too.  ABC did something to their web site so that their news comes up in some kind of a box. I can't get that to load either even with noscript turned off. (I can get it on IE though)

472 We will welcome you in rags, if rags is what you have. And believe me when I say, for some it is exactly that.  Posted by: mama winger at November 08, 2013 09:28 AM (P6QsQ)

We have the same.  And no one cares, or has anything to say about it.

But to whom much has been given, much is asked.

And when the AVERAGE salary in my parish is $110K, and you show up in workout shorts, running shoes and a t-shirt on your way home from a run.  I might just think you're not exactly giving God your best that day.

St. Therese of Lisieux had a program called, "The Little Way."  The bottom line is that you do everything, no matter how small, with love, and a focus on God.  For our friend William, who literally is in rags every Sunday in the pew, he is doing it all with love.  It's everything he has.  Most weeks it's a major obstacle for him just to get to the Church.  For the spoiled brats of ambassadors, attorneys, and lobbyists in the parish, they are not.

I think I know who's got less to answer for with God.

evangelical = Republican

Any evangelical that thinks its okay to embrace a  pro choice concregant is not an evangelical.   If  you want  a religious movement that is a big tent  acceptance of Democrat values,  start your own movement.

Oh, but Mike Castle stayed home and wouldn't support Christine O'Donnell publicly (and other, similar cases)! Well, so the hell what? If Mike Castle jumped off a bridge, would you follow him out of spite? But I still will, even if I don't think they're a good candidate, as long as I think they're the best candidate in the field. Because that's what we should be concerned with. No protest votes, no staying home, because having someone that agrees with me 70%-80% of the time as my representative is far better than having someone who agrees with me 0-20% of the time.

Enough of this. I'm going to work.

Until now, I have loyally held my nose and voted for the GOP nominee, even when my guy lost.  Heck, I have rung door bells and worked phones in GOTV efforts.  I have worked ballot security as a poll watcher in precincts with a history of vote fraud where I was the only Republican, the only white person, and everybody who came into the room that day hated me.

No more.  The one word answer to your argument to bend over the desk and take one more for the team is, "Cuccinelli".  I have been a team player.  I am willing to be a team player again if the people who run the party demonstrate that they are willing to give more than lip service to the idea of party loyalty.  When the Chris Christiys and Mike Castles are out there raising money for the Sharon Angles and Christie O'Donnels instead of making snide jokes at their expense to the press, that would be an indication that their party is worth supporting or at least rejoining.  Next year is another election.  Let's see how much teamwork the moderate wing of the Republican Party demonstrates.  From past experience, my prediction is none at all.  I am not willing to try all that hard when some of the team members keep deliberately throwing the game out of spite, ideological opposition to my beliefs or because they are paid off.

Think of me as the one member of the Washington Generals who didn't know that my team wasn't ever going to win the game when he finally learns the truth.  I have other things that I can do with my time besides playing an elaborate game of three card monty.

485 I've been unemployed for over 2 years, live in PA, and I sent Ken Cuccinelli $20 in May and another $20 in August.

Cuccinelli was the first AG in the country to file suit against Obamacare vs. Chris Christie who wouldn't join the other 26 Republican Governors in their suit against the law. And he never stopped fighting Obamacare. I don't feel I wasted my money.

The RNC and their "special" candidates will never see another dime from me nor will I ever man another phone bank, knock on doors or drive seniors to the polls. Who is going to do grunt work for the GOP, now that they have decided they don't need their grassroot? Oh, well, too bad.

In the end, I lost my insurance and if I can get a new policy in place by the 1st of the year, which is looking increasingly doubtful, I'm looking at paying 4x more in deductible & out-of-pocket costs. But I will always remember the people who fought tooth and nail against the Obamination - people like Ken Cuccinelli, Ted Cruz...and NOT Chris Christie who wouldn't even sign his name onto to a suit with the other Republican governors.

Fenelon -  I love Fernando Ortega .  He is superb.  He has many many videos on You Tube, and several CDs out as well.  He is an Anglican evangelical, and has a wonderful music ministry.  I think you will enjoy him.  He does a lot of traditional Christian hymns, often with modern variations that are just marvelous.  One of my favorites is his "Crown Him with Many Crowns." 493 According to the way the law is written it doesn't matter whether they stay with their company or not. The insurance provider I used *always* permitted the employee to continue the coverage after leaving the job. But the former employee had to pay the premium. True story, guy gives notice. Goes to work for another company. He's gonna make three dollars an hour more, but no insurance coverage. He tosses the insurance letter in the trash, because it's gonna eat up all of his three dollar an hour 'raise'. He proceeds to inseminate his wife. Six months later he's banging on my door looking for his old job back. Then, after getting rehired, behind my back he's bitchin' that somehow *I'm* to blame because now he has to pay for his wife's maternity/delivery out of pocket. That ex-employee is the type that politicians pander to. The kind who will not ever except personal responsibility for their actions. Instead, it's the big bad corporations that make zillions of dollars in profits. * bangs head on desk *

The company mandate goes into effect Jan 1 next year.  The law is written to cause your insurance to be dropped if ANYTHING in your policy has been dropped since the law went into effect. Anything includes changes in copay, rates paid by insured, etc.

506 I don't doubt the government shutdown cost us in early ballots in Virginia (all so Cruz could get his name out there for the 2016 primary) but Cuccinelli was fatally flawed to begin with and was losing before the shutdown.

Republicans started winning on the issue when they let ObamaCare play out, ObamaCare's support actually increased during the shutdown and Republicans polled lower than at any point in history.  And what exactly was our prize for that stunt?  Anyone who though the law was going to be repealed was an idiot.

A mainstream, conservative Republican should have destroyed McAuliffe, it was like running against the personification of Solyndra and Enron.  The War on Women stuff worked because Cuccinelli liked to engage on those issues when wooing primary voters.  He played a dangerous game his entire career flirting with the crazies and it finally caught up with him.

Virginia needs to scarp the convention nonsense and stick with a closed, Republican primary where a broad coalition of conservatives chooses the nominee.

FDR probably would have only served 2 terms and would not have been able to pack the court. "For the want of nail" is applicable here."

Seriously? Your main thoughts about Hitler have to do with how his absence would have affected AMERICAN ELECTORAL POLITICS? As in, the problem with Hitler is that he allowed a Democrat to be reelected?

Anyone remember anyone excited about his campaign? At some point, we heard the tea party SHOULD BE excited about this race, and the libertarian candidate was a spoiler. That told us Cuccinelli would lose long before it happened and the establishment was blamed. Personally, I think they should have invested more in his race. They spent three times as much on McDonnell, who although popular was a drag on the ticket, because he could not stump for the candidate, much like Gore and Clinton in 2000. Republicans have lost too many races in VA, which is nearly blue. And the party just conceded it basically.

Posted by: CarolT at November 08, 2013 09:15 AM (z4WKX)

Unfortunately that's not the way it works.  First, we don't have "special prosecutors" anymore; the law authorizing those expired in 1983.  A new law was put in place that allowed "independent counsels" to be appointed by a special panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, but that law then expired in 1999 and the function was subsumed back into the DoJ under its Regulation 28 CFR Part 600.

Now, the ONLY person who can request an "independent counsel" is the Attorney General or, if he recuses himself, the Deputy Attorney General.
