1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 28, 2013.  On this day in 1925 the Grand Ole Opry began broadcasting at WSM in Nashville, TN.   Yes, it used to be real country music then.

31 And I leave you with this Thanksgiving vignette that we used to sing in Grammar school when I was a kid.

Over the river and through the woods,
To grandmother's house we go;
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh,
Through (the) white and drifted snow!
Over the river and through the woods,
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.
Over the river and through the woods,
To have a first-rate play;
Oh, hear the bells ring, "Ting-a-ling-ling!"
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!
Over the river and through the woods,
Trot fast, my dapple gray!
Spring over the ground,
Like a hunting hound!
For this is Thanksgiving Day.
Over the river and through the woods,
And straight through the barnyard gate.
We seem to go extremely slow
It is so hard to wait!
Over the river and through the woods,
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

Have a happy Thanksgiving Morons!

44 I had read about the Pizza Hut manager on Yahooooooo!!! The comments are great, as most of the ones I had read seemed to lean toward boycotting ELEVENTY Pizza Hut because those evil capitalist rat bastards were making poor hard working Americans work on Thanksgiving. I suggested they then boycott all establishments that are open that day, including the ones open at midnite for Black Friday OMG THE BESTEST DAY EVER!!! because somebody has to be in the store early on Thursday to prepare for the herd of people.   Crickets so far.

I don't think people should have to work Tday, or Sunday, or Christmas, or July 4th, or whatever other national holiday. But I can't be trusted to buy my liquor the day before, so at least the liquor stores should be open...and the bank ATMs...and 7-11....and Dunkin Donuts...of course gas stations 'cause I gotta go someplace on the holiday dammit....

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

We'll know for sure after it passes perihelion, and is no longer blocked by the occluding disk on the SOHO C3.

99 An interesting article about Ana Montes, the cuban apy arrested in 2001. According to her fbi sister, Montes did it for power. Personally, I think she did it for the sense of power and as a big fuck you to her own family. Unfortunately, when she is released from prison, her family will be there with open arms. Therefore, I can not feel sorry for them. By selling secrets to the cubans, she also gave them to islamo terrorists. http://goo.gl/fqGIE5

I don't think the re-branding and re-messaging the Administration and the MFM are going to try and ram down our throats is going to work.  Their unicorn stories of success!11! for some people will be greatly, greatly overshadowed by the rest of us with limited choices, yanked insurance, soaring premiums and lack of retaining our preferred doctors.

Happy Thanksgiving to all morons and 'ettes, the funniest, wittiest, best group of souls on the Interwebs.  Have a wonderful day, whatever you're doing and enjoy friends and family to the fullest.

103 Good morning Horde, and Happy Thanksgiving! It's been a suck ass year for me, but there are still many things to be thankful for. Healthy kids, still having a job (barely), and a great Thanksgiving meal to be had with family. 115 In his 1972 PhD dissertation, A Rationale for Appeasement, he argued that Neville Chamberlain had sensibly seen Germany as “Britain’s natural ally” in the 1930s and recognized “the threat that the United States posed to the Empire.” It was only factors beyond Chamberlain’s control, Myers suggested, that led to the failure of his policy to appease Adolf Hitler. It was a controversial point of view that one PhD examiner condemned as anti-Semitic. This is from an article about Ken and Gwen Meyers -- rich, connected, commies, and spying for cuba. Oh, and of course, obama donors. These people and the people who they associated with were nuts. Secret trips with other similarly minded state dept workers to cuba? Vehicular manslaughter? You might like the description of Thanksgiving in the book "Starving the South"

http://www.amazon.com/Starving-South-How-North-Civil/dp/0312601816/

It talks about how people all over the north mailed food to their local regiments on the first Thanksgiving.  Given that some of what they mailed was roast turkeys and geese and the fact that there was no refrigeration and the mail often took several weeks to reach the troops, some of the results were more a matter of good intentions than good results.  The people of the south tried to match this effort with even less success.

The greater part of the book deals with the reasons that despite the fact that the south was primarily an agricultural area in the 1860s, hunger and even starvation were widespread.  It was much more a matter of stupid government policies than of blockade.  Before 1860, there were a significant number of poor white farmers doing subsistence farming but most of the agriculture of the south was raising commercial crops, primarily cotton.  There was so much money to be made raising cotton for export that it made much more economic sense to devote as much agricultural land to raising cotton as possible and to import food as well as manufactured goods.

With the blockade that was enacted soon after secession, the Confederate government encouraged farmers to switch to producing food crops and many of them did.  So far, so good.  The Confederate states produced far more food than was needed to feed everybody quite well.  Unfortunately, the Confederate government then imposed a series of price controls and sales restrictions that would have made a Soviet commissar proud.  These rules were imposed in order to lower the price that the army had to pay for rations as well as to make things "fair" for civilians.  The result was that farmers stopped shipping food to the official markets and when the Confederate army started seizing and confiscating wagons loaded with food on the road, they stopped shipping food anywhere.  The results were predictable.

One of the results that the Confederate government had not anticipated was that converting southern agriculture from cotton to food production made it possible for Union armies to survive in the south by foraging.  Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas would not have been possible in 1861 when the areas his forces marched through were still primarily growing cotton.

Happy Thanksgiving, Morons and Moronettes!! Gonna be a traditional Turkey Day here at the ranch. No family for thousands of miles so, it'll be just me, the wife and the doggehs. And, yes, I make a special siberian husky casserole for them.

I think back to my youth on this day. The local Navy brats would gather early in the morning for a game of no-holds barred tackle football. Helmets? Pshaw! Usually quite cold, sometimes frozen or snowing but we'd play until somebody got hurt or we got hungry. I remember sitting across the table from my brothers at dinner, grinning even though we had assorted bumps, contusions, abrasions and lacerations. Made us very hungry. "Don't bleed on my good table cloth." We didn't have time to bleed. I always saved room for my Mom's Chicken-Oyster Gumbo.

There'll be beer for the games and a great bottle of wine with dinner. Have a good one, folks!!

162 Anna Puma, Hi. Not a financial expert or anything like it, but Bitcoins, Litecoins, etc, etc.- Have the look and feel of a classic bubble and/or pyramid scheme. Think BeanyBabies and/or Pokemon Trading Cards several years ago. The "mining" of Bitcoins is how they restrict access and drive excitement- think operant conditioning. Again as the BeanyBabies or Pokemon Cards had rarities that were worth hundreds of dollars - but only in relation to what people were willing to pay. Bitcoins so far only have value linked to what people are willing to pay in real cash. A great deal if you get in on the bottom floor and who knows the bubble may inflate gloriously to $10K/bitcoin. But, in my opinion, at some point this will crash and crash hard like BeanieBabies and if you haven't gotten out in time you will be left with less than a roomful of crappy stuffed animals.

166 10 Remember all those "protestors" that wanted $15/hour in Seattle? They were all astroturfing paid protestors from the Unions, mainly SEIU. The labor laws in this country need to be rewritten to get out of the FDR mode that makes it impossible to sue these SOBs.

Doesn't surprise me. They have a large presence there - they fly a huge flag at their offices near the federal building. I was there this summer during some of the "protests". One of the places they held their theater is one of the most crime-ridden intersections in Seattle anymore (and it wasn't 25 years ago), 3rd and Union, next to The Bon (now Macy's)..

170 A blessed Thanksgiving to each and every one of you from a 99 44/100% lurker just north of the southern border.  You have no idea how entertaining you all are for me, living alone.  I feel like I know you all and worry about you and yours.  And if I sounds like an worry wort old grandma, it's because I am.

You are welcome.  The blurbs make it look like yet another Confederate apologist book about how the mean old Yankees cheated and evil Uncle Billy committed war crimes but it is actually a well written book about the decisions people in power made and the consequences of those decisions.
