Happy Tuesday.

In Election 2014 news, Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor trails his GOP challenger Tom Cotton by 7 points. Obamacare gets a lot of the credit.

Rep. Steve Stockman surprised everyone yesterday with a surprise decision to challenge Sen. John Cornyn in the GOP primary. Stockman announced his candidacy in World Net Daily. He has $36,000 in the bank.

The NY Post editorial board responded to that NYTimes homelessness piece that got medium-sized buzz yesterday to call it hooey. A taste: "If the city is at fault here, it might well be for having been too generous — providing so much that neither the father nor mother seems much inclined to provide for their kids."

5 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Tuesday, December 10, 2013.  On this day in 1955 kids began saying "Here I come to save the day, which means that Mighty Mouse is on the way".  And yes, Dec 10, 1955 was on a Saturday.  Brothers and I used to watch that show religiously.

48 Steve Stockman was originally elected to the House of Representatives in a district that had been gerrymandered for a Democrat.  The conventional wisdom was that it was a fluke and that he would be gone in the next election.  The conventional wisdom was wrong and he is still around more than a decade later.

Will that work on a state wide basis?  I don't know but he has surprised people before.

I had to laugh when I saw Gabe's link to that NY Post.  Made me remember this big "story" on the front page of the Houston Barnicle from back in the late 1980s.  Basically same sort of thing as the NY Slimes did here.  Poor, put upon Hispanic (naturally) family living in a homeless shelter because Daddy could not find work.  Such a tear jerker, as you would not believe.  But as usual, the devil was in the details...

Seems they had been living in Massachusetts, where Daddy had a job in construction.  And at that time there was a big construction boom going on up there so work was plentiful (I knew this because a friend of mine, who was also a construction worker, had also moved up there for this reason.)  But then Mamacita tells Daddy "I wanna move back to Houston so I can be close to my mommy".  So like a good pussy-whipped  hubby he quits his job, packs up Mommacita and their two kids and moves back to Houston.

Only problem was that he could not find work.  The Texas economy was still in a big slump then and there were no construction jobs to be had for love nor money.  But hey, wifey was close to her mommy, although that apparently did not extend to putting her, her idiot husband and their two kids up since they could not find jobs down here.  So this poor, put upon family ends up in a homeless shelter, and their little sob story splashed all over the front page of Houston's leading leftist rag.

Of course that bit of agitprop...excuse me, socially conscious reporting, failed to ask why the husband didn't have the balls to tell his cupid stunt to STFD and STFU, we are not going anywhere because there is no work to be had in Texas, whereas there is work here, not to mention a roof over our heads and food on the table.  But no, the Barnicle kind of...skimmed over that part, just as the NY Slimes did in theirs.

Ah, the American Democrat Ministry of Propaganda...oops, new media.  Gotta love 'em...

How convenient that my route coincides with the predicted winter storm area, is it not? I figure that if I can cross the Tappan Zee Bridge and from there to the intersection of the Garden State Parkway and NJ Turnpike, I'll have gotten through the area where I'd most likely be delayed / stopped. Then I could outflank the worst of the snow in favor of rain by continuing on the Garden State Parkway before striking for the DelMem Bridge starting somewhere around Atlantic City or points further south. Wish me luck Comrades Morons!

Morning, all.  Well, I went to bed early, so I didn't get the chance to really work on my  Marilyn  Monroe story.  So please bear with any less than felicitous phrasing. . .

In brief, it concerns the iconic subway grate scene in The Seven Year Itch.  Originally, it had been planned to shoot in front of New York's Trans-Lux theater, but despite strict secrecy, mobs of people showed up to cheer the star on.  Hoping to keep the crowd under control, director Billy Wilder made a deal - let them shoot the scene first.  Then, the professional photographers would take their shots.  Then any amateurs could step forward and take as many photos as they wished.

Monroe was worried about the powerful arc lights used to illuminate the scene, and she was right to - they turned her panties transparent, leaving nothing to the imagination.  So she put on a second pair, which appeared to solve the problem.  But it didn't; unknown to Monroe, if she stood at a certain angle to the arcs, both pairs turned transparent.

As it turned out, Wilder ended up trashing the footage he shot in New York because of excessive crowd noise that couldn't be masked, and the scene was reshot on the Twentieth Century-Fox lot, with crew members fighting each other for the job of standing beneath the grate looking up Monroe's dress in order to send a puff of air skyward.

Joe DiMaggio was present at the NY shot, brought there by columnist Walter Winchell, who wanted an exclusive.  Jealous beyond measure at Monroe's antics and the cheering crowd, he beat her so badly when they returned to their hotel room that Marilyn decided then and there to divorce him.

Now, how do you know which is the "two-panty" shot and which isn't?  A rule of thumb is this - if the shot shows only Monroe, it's likely to be NY (note the two pair very visible in this picture):

http://tinyurl.com/ntcvf8u

If the shot shows both Monroe and co-star Tom Ewell, it's likely to be the studio shot (note the row of lights above the two):

http://tinyurl.com/pqg7yw9

Oh, one last thing - that footage shot in New York, where Marilyn's satiny depths were exposed to the camera?  All film shot was returned to the studio vaults, but someone with access managed to steal that particular bit.  At last report, it's still in private hands.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

There's no fucking way I'll spend a nanosecond watching that egomaniac make a damn fool out of himself and the country. Unfortunately, they cheered him like he'd just scored the winning touchdown in the Superbowl.  Presumably because of the color of his skin.  This brought out the community organizer/tin pot dictator in him.  You could see how much he reveled in the applause just by how often he lifted his chin up, Mussolini style.  The man -- and I use that term lightly -- would be comfortable running Venezuela right about now.  And he wouldn't change a damn thing.

Yellow Dogism is the only reason Brooks held out so long. Stockman is a buffoon, possibly the biggest one in Texas, and I'm someone who has supported Dan Patrick.

Get one of those plastic things so that you can cook bacon in the microwave while you are frying your eggs on the stove.  Starting the day with bacon and eggs gives you something to look forward to and makes waking up in the dark almost worth it.  Also, cook your eggs with a bit of butter.  It makes more of a difference than you would think.

I thought SC was the only place that did that.  I had never seen it before I moved here.  At home the thing was to draw a bunch of water because if it got down much below freezing the pipes would freeze even with a trickle left coming out of the facets.

Note: When I was a kid most houses did not have and enclosed foundation so air swept freely under the house.  But it made a good place to play with green army men and cars in the dirt when it was raining.

Both Abdalati, who wasn't part of the measurement team, and Scambos said this is likely an unusual random reading in a place that hasn't been measured much before and could have been colder or hotter in the past and we wouldn't know. They just had to bring in global warming, didn't they, so we don't think for a second that the cold temperatures mean that we're not all going to melt from the man-caused heat soon. Nor does the high of 21 and low of 7 forecast for my end of SE PA in mid December mean anything. Global warming is still happening, Serious You Guys! Btw, I thought it was climate change/chaos. 211 I really don't know what I'm going to do. I got some additional info from Independence Blue Cross yesterday. They've advised me I only have till 12/15 to sign up for a plan. If I don't sign up, they will automatically enroll me in a plan. I tried to call them to tell them NOT to do this but their lines were busy all day.

Here's my story. Sorry if it's repetitive and boring but I don't know where else to tell it. I feel like I'm going to go crazy.

I have chronic migraines and take generics & name brand drugs. I had purchased a plan years ago even with pre-existing condition under "guaranteed issue" law passed in the 90s that prohibited carriers from denying coverage if you maintained coverage without a substantial break. The plan was canceled due to the ACA.

Yesterday I was able to go on the Blue Cross site and get some more info. Under Obamacare, none of the generics I take are even covered under the basic plan. All of the generics are considered Tier 2 or Tier 3 drugs - meaning that in order to get them covered, I have to buy a higher level Gold Plan to even get them covered. The name brand drugs I take are Tier 4. These are either not covered at all (depending upon which plan I take) or are covered only at 40 or 50%.

I was also able to see what hospitals & doctors I can see. In order to see my migraine specialist, I need a Tier 2 plan. The only hospital I can use under Tier 1 is the local death trap, there are no additional local hospitals of note in Tier 2 and all the decent local hospitals, specialty hospitals and oddly a lot of death traps) in Tier 3. (And those with young children who choose a Tier 1 plan will not be happy to discover that none of the Childrens' Hospitals are included under Tier 1).

I was previously paying $565 a month for my coverage with approximately $125 in co-pay for a total of $690 a month. As far as I can now figure it. in order to get an equivalent plan that will allow me to see the same doctors, get the same medication and go to the local hospital of my choice, I will pay a total of approximately $1330.

I just can't do it. I'm in my 50s (but of course look like I'm  29) so I could have a serious medical problem. My appendix burst 8 years ago and I was in ICU for 9 days so shit happens. I've never been without medical insurance in my life. The $700 I was paying a month was a lot for us - the only healthcare I use is my migraine doctor and the medication but I worry that something will happen. I just don't know what to do. The cheapest plans Obamacare offers cost $497 a month with a $6,000 deductible but they don't cover ANY of my medications.

I haven't slept for almost 2 months. I cry all the time now, my husband is sick with worry. My elderly mother will be lucky to live through this. I'm not speaking with my Obamabot sister and the rest of my Obamabot family is due to arrive for Christmas and although I love them, I dread seeing them and can't bear to purchase a single gift for any of them. I know I'm trapped inside my own thinking, I just don't know what to do.

The snow - it is a-fallin', and it is beautiful. That means I shall be a-shovelin' later today. Sigh.

I'm hoping I won't have to.  The snow seems to be hitting Boston and the Cape hardest; up here, we've got a dusting to an inch predicted.  If it's that little, I'm not going to bother, but just toss buckets of salt down.  I hate winter and snow and want as little of it as I can manage.

214 Speaking of weather, I was involved in a 56-car pileup on the PA turnpike on Sunday. My friend was driving us to our performance at a concert in the Lancaster area. Needless to say, we didn't make it. And neither did the organist, who was stuck some distance behind us. Thankfully, my friend's big truck didn't sustain serious damage, in part thanks to a guy driving a little car who tried to drive into the median concrete barrier to avoid us and so he didn't hit us full on. Amazingly, it seemed no one was seriously injured that I can see. There was one fatality, a man who died only several feet from our car after people attempted CPR and tried a defibrillator, on the other (right) lane. Poor, poor man. He had had a minor accident (the first one) and had gone to see how the people in the other car were doing. He did the right thing and stayed on the berm. But it seems like there were people on the road, and a woman driving on the turnpike drove onto the berm to try to avoid them, but unfortunately she hit the guy. Poor, poor man. I found out yesterday that he's my age. I feel so bad for his family.

It is at times like this that a doting hubby would come in useful.

It's not a doting hubby, chique, but. . .

Have you ever heard of the writer Jack Finney?  His best known novel was Time And Again, and he specialized in 'time travel' stories, where an artifact or a mysterious ticket booth or just strength of will propelled someone back in time to the Victorian era, almost always having a happy ending.

Many years ago - in a horror collection, for some bizarre reason - I came across his story The Love Letter.  It made a very deep impression on me when I was a boy, and in some ways I think it has influenced my whole life, in both a good and bad way.

Get a hot cup of tea and read.  It won't take long:

237 Jeanbodine- Sorry for the very difficult troubles with Obamacare. About a week ago (December 5th )someone posted a link of alternatives if your insurance is cancelled. Here's some of the info. Maybe one of the horde here has the actual link: First up, protection from major medical bills and getting needed funds to pay for care. Here are a couple of the best options: Join a health care sharing ministry. These are voluntary, charitable membership organizations that agree to share medical bills among the membership. They function similar to insurance, and are probably the best alternative to conventional health insurance. There are four of them, at least that I know of. Three are open only to practicing Christians (Samaritan Ministries, Christian Healthcare Ministries, and Christian Care Ministry) while a fourth, Liberty HealthShare, is open to anyone who agrees with their ethical commitment to religious liberty. They operate entirely outside of ObamacareÂ’s regulations, and typically offer benefits for about half the cost of similar health insurance. Members are also exempt from having to pay the tax for being uninsured. Buy a short-term health insurance policy. These policies usually last between 1 and 11 months (6 months seem to be standard) and are not regulated under Obamacare, and therefore donÂ’t offer the same high level of benefits that can drive up costs. Deductibles are available that are higher than what is allowed with Obamacare-compliant health insurance, leading to further savings. They can typically be renewed at the end of the policy, although it is a new policy that wonÂ’t cover any conditions that occurred under the previous short-term policy. Another limitation is that they often canÂ’t be renewed over and over again, it looks like 3 years of coverage is about the maximum. But they are much less expensive than conventional health insurance, and can be a good option for covering major medical expenses. Buy alternative insurance products like fixed-benefit, critical illness, oraccident insurance. These policies pay cash in the event you are diagnosed with cancer, spend a night in the hospital, or need some other medical treatment. They cost a fraction of what health insurance costs under Obamacare, and by giving you cash directly you arenÂ’t locked in to any particular provider network. Another thing to do is to max out your medical and uninsured/underinsured driver coverage amounts under your auto insurance policy, which can pay medical bills if you are hurt in a car accident.

They had *the* most adorable kids. My friend is a gem. Her big heart really showed that day. She never complained once about the damage to her car, and the laugh in her voice that's always there didn't go away the whole time. She also comforted a young girl who had just started driving not long before and was crying because, even though she wasn't involved in any of the accidents, she was really shaken by all the damage around her and the guy so many of us watched die.

248 I've made this comment before, but I will repeat it. Wife has '98 Subaru Impreza, 83,000 miles. Subaru's motto used to be "Inexpensive, and built to stay that way". Well, this has easily been the most expensive car maintenance-wise that I've ever owned. The necessary cam belt (and associated stuff) replacement ran about $900. At around 80,000, it developed a leaky rear seal. The engine had to be pulled to replace that..., another $1000. In short, when something fails, it's going to be expensive. We also have a '98 Buick, with the same mileage. Repair cost so far? $39 for a fan belt idler.

I am so sorry for you.  I don't know what's happening to us, since Mrs P handles all our finances and coverages.  I don't know if her employer will drop her (I suspect not, since she hasn't mentioned it), and I expect my coverage won't change too much, though I really don't know.

I'm more worried about her, since she had open-heart surgery about 3 years ago and needs her drugs to stay alive.  I'm on a statin for cholesterol and on anti-depressants.  The statin I don't care about - I've always figured I'm one drink away from a heart attack anyway - but without the anti-depressants, I'll be utterly lost.

I don't know what to say about your O-bot relatives.  Were it me, I'd go thorugh just what you've told us and tell them to their faces that this is all their fault and you never want to speak to them again.  But if they're like the O-bots I know, they'll either ignore you, say you're too stupid to know you're better off or blame it on the GOP.

This standard health benefit plan may provide a more affordable health plan for you although, at the same time, it may provide you with fewer health plan benefits than those normally included as state-mandated health benefits in Texas. Please consult your insurance agent to discover which statemandated health benefits are excluded in this evidence of coverage." Joy, joy, joy.

I assume you mean for an Apple product? Works great with my MacBook. Don't buy the connector from Apple, they gouge you something fierce. Buy a knockoff on ebay; works just as well, much cheaper.

He had the rare honor of a TV show actually referencing his death in the storyline of the show. Bonanza lasted barely a year after his passing.

284 jeannebodine, I'm so sorry to read about your plight (and Lauren's, too).  It's simply unconscionable what this abysmal president, Pelosi, Reid and all the rest have done to the citizens of this country.  And what makes me most sick about it is that they will forever be removed from even a scintilla of consequence for what they have caused to the rest of us.  So many of us will be in your shoes next fall.  My only consolation is that they will pay the political price for it and that, somehow, enough of this pig gets repealed so we can have some semblance of what they've ripped away.

As for your family, you have my deepest sympathies.  I'm now at a point where I have such disdain for any fool who supports this traitorous man, or who voted for him.  Friends and family included.  Maybe that's the wrong way to go about it, but the destruction and misery he has caused are real.  And I blame them.

285 Yes, Obot relatives don't believe me. My sister, in particular. She thinks I'm making all this up because she knows I didn't like Obamacare.I could die in the street with no insurance and she would be convinced that I did it just to prove Obama sucks.

We were raised Catholic and after high school, my sister married a Quaker and decided she hated religion of any kind. She raised her kids to believe religion and belief in G-d is the most serious evil in the world, that the world would be a better place if we burnt down all the churches in the world.

And yet she is the most progressive Obama zealot I've ever seen. Nothing could shake her belief, never a single moment of doubt and anyone that speaks against her savior must be an evil heretic, even her own mother and sister.

It's extortion, and a political posture to bolster support in the minority community.

Nothing could shake her belief, never a single moment of doubt and anyone that speaks against her savior must be an evil heretic, even her own mother and sister. My brother in law is a serious liberal and Obama supporter. It used to make me nuts when I had to deal with him at family functions. I finally realized that getting angry only made me unhappy and actually made him feel good. I don't do that anymore. Anytime the subject comes up, I do not bring it up, I just smile and tell him "Whatever you say". We had a few of these moments during Thanksgiving when Obamacare or some other Obama issue came up. I could see it was really getting under his skin, he and every other Obot knows the tables have turned. I'm not angry and unhappy anymore more, he is. And that works for me.

299 It's funny about the epidemic of depression in this country in the past 50 years. I remember researching foods with anti-depression effects a buncha years back. High on the list was maple syrup. Plain old maple syrup -- that was commonplace on the family table a half a century ago. Then -- because the boiling down of the maple sap to syrup is so energy intensive -- then the oil shocks of the 70's and the availability of low cost corn syrup drove it almost completely from the shelves. That's my conspiracy theory for the day, but it's still early, so I might be able to dredge up another before nightfall.

306 I will pray for you and your family, MWW. This is my go-to prayer now. It is from St Faustina, who was canonized in 2001 or 2001.. Eternal God in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion-ine4xhastible, look kindly upon us and increase your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your Holy Will which is Love and Mercy itself. I have been praying the "divine mercy Chaplet" which is something the RC;s here may be familar with. Except for the "Hail Mary" there is probably nothing that people who aren't RC could have a problem with, and since I'm not RC I modify the Hail Mary prayer.

That happened to me once when there was a mountain load of snow and I was very grateful and gave them money gladly (they didn't actually charge me anything.)
