Happy Friday.

The Minnesota Obamacare exchange, which is seeing the full gamut of Obamacare website problems, had another little problem last month: its director took a vacation to Costa Rica right in the middle of the failed rollout. I suspect this vacation had been scheduled ("financial commitments were made") in some happier day when the exchange director thought everything was going to be hunky-dory after the October 1 launch. She's basically Sec. Sebelius on a smaller scale.

The White House is signaling its openness to letting Islamist groups join the Syrian rebel coalition. They have to promise to actually want peace, though. Oh, and "the Americans would like the Islamic Front groups to return U.S. vehicles, communications gear and other non-lethal equipment they seized last weekend from warehouses at the Syria-Turkey border." "Seized" is a more politic way of saying "stole," I think.

A UN team has determined that chemical weapons were used at least five times in Syria in attacks against . . . government soldiers and citizens.

Mike Huckabee has quit his radio show and is preparing to run for president again. My take: good. He can't win the primary, but he can suck up a lot of funding and support from fringe types, thus deterring and hamstringing other long-shot politicians considering a run.

Last night the House overwhelmingly voted to approve the Ryan-Murray budget deal, 332-94. The GOP breakdown was 169-62, easily satisfying the Hastert Rule. Speaker Boehner ends the year much stronger than he began it, and he's taken the possibility of shutdown in 2014 and 2015 off the table, assuming the Senate passes it today. We discuss this deal in depth on the podcast, which will be up later.

Here's a cover from a nice Mormon boy and some Canadian dude:

Have a great weekend.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, December 13, 2013. On this day in 1962 NASA launched the first communications satellite.  Oh how things have changed with that satellite.  Yes, they used to do good things before they were diverted to the AGW scam and Muzzie outreach.  They may as well be disbanded now.

21 The stupid CO school has reclassified the 6 y.o. kissing incident from "sexual harassment" to "misconduct" and allowed the young lothario to return to school.

I also suspect that the school had been notified by their lawyers that a sexual harassment charge was bullshit.

The legal aspects per US code:

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when:

1. submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual's employment,

2. submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such individuals, or

3. such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment. (29 C.F.R. § 1604.11 [1980])

#3 is the closest they could get and they would have a hard time making that stick from a 6 y.o.

On Friday, police in Raleigh arrested Leonardo Miranda Garcia, 25, <an illegal> after he reportedly raped a girl under the age of 13.

The state of North Carolina is currently experiencing a virtual crime wave at the hands of illegal aliens, due in large measure to the fact that all of the state's major cities now have 'sanctuary' policies in place, shielding illegal aliens from detection and deportation.

Despite the overwhelming objections from the citizens of the Tarheel State, officials have gone out of their way to lay out the welcome mat for illegal aliens...

Christie?  Nope.

As for that "bipartisan" budget deal?  Only bipartisan if you consider Dems and Repukes on opposite sides of a divide.

They are not.  It's us and it's them.  They are on their side.  And they got  what they wanted, at the expense of the American people.

Seems to me there was a similar effort made to derail the original Senate vote on ChoomCare, too, but then Bitch McConnell realized Christmas was comin' and he might not get home for his presents if the vote was delayed any longer.

So he licked Hairy Reid's boots and the rest is, well, history....

Teh Kraut and Teh Noot seem to think this "budget" is a winner. After all, Potty Murray teamed up with Noted Conservative Paul Ryan to lovingly craft it. Reaching Across the Aisle!!11!!eleventy!!!

.Correct.  Even if you cut the budget right now by 10% (and we all know that won't happen) and freeze it at that level forever, it still won't be enough.

Pretty soon interest rates are going to start creeping up no matter what the Fed does  and when they get to normal levels of ~3-4% just servicing the interest on the debt will take over 50% of all Federal incoming revenues a few years into that cycle.  There is a reason the Fed is keeping interest rates at zero as long as they can, and it has nothing to do with encouraging companies to borrow.

Social  Security, Medicare and Medicaid which are already increasing by leaps and bounds will take up the rest.

154 Good morning friends in my computer, and Happy Lucia Day!

In Sweden, December 13th is the Feast of Saint Lucia, the Christian martyr who is celebrated as one who brings light to a darkened world.  Of course, it is dark in Sweden most of the day in the wintertime, so Lucia Day is a festival of lights and candles.

Traditionally, each village selects a beautiful young girl to represent Lucia, by wearing a robe of white tied with a red sash, and wearing a wreath of lingonberry leaves in her hair, entwined with lit candles.  She is joined by other young ones and there are processions through the street.

Similarly, each family selects its youngest daughter to be Lucia for the day, and this girl wears the same costume and is responsible for bringing coffee and Lussekatter (saffron Lucia buns) to mama and papa in bed.

In our house, we substituted battery operated candles for the real thing.  We didn't want to risk our daughter going up in flames.

Here is a Lucia procession with traditional Swedish carol

158 By this time next year, we'll be waiting for "official announcements" from the prospective candidates and counting "exploratory committees" on both hands, six months later we'll pretty much have our field and the campaigning will begin in earnest. Six months after that, votes start counting. So basically one more year for someone to step up, gain national name recognition, etc. Watch for various and sundry pols to start writing lengthy letters to the editor or suddenly appearing on Sunday talk shows, those are the guys trying to get up the nerve to start a secret squirrel campaign, but not sure if it's worth it this time around.

159 Glad to see my freshman House Rep's opposition to this budget deal: Today, the United States House of Representatives voted on the Ryan-Murray Budget. Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) made the following statement: “While there are some positive aspects to the proposed budget, it does not go far enough. We wanted to balance the budget and this legislation does not make that a priority. We wanted to bring meaningful spending cuts to the table now, not 10 years down the road. This budget will increase spending by $48 billion over the next two years and it will increase air travel fees on the American people by 124%. The American people want their government to be responsible and more transparent about how it spends taxpayers’ hard-earned money. This agreement fails that test, which is why I cannot, in good conscience, vote for this legislation.”

237 In a free nation, people must regulate their own behavior and not look to law to regulate it for them.  If people have no internal constraints, they require external restraints.  The more lax we are morally, the more laws are required.  That is why the Founders said that liberty requires a moral people.

As Jesus said,

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

How many laws would be unnecessary if people simply followed the instructions?

it's raining actal liquid rain. Not ice pellets, not snit nor sheet nor slush but real drizzle. Spring!

Lucky bastard. It's 17 degrees here....and more snow in the forecast. Compared to last year, we didn't have any snow at all until after the first of the year, and temps were much warmer. This winter is going come with a steep heating bill.  :/

In other news, I watched Naked and Afraid last night, (the one with the two couples in Panama). That blond woman....useless. She contributed absolutely nothing, and spent the entire show bitching and whining. I would have left her naked ass in the jungle after about four days, and struck out on my own.

I would suggest really deep down, most of the hate is not for the lawyers themselves, but for the necessity for having to have a lawyer.

Our laws having been written by lawyers, are written in such a byzantine way, purposefully using lawyerese as a languange unto itself, that the only way to deal with it is to hire a lawyer to navigate it.

One might be tempted to think that this was done on purpose. Kind of like the way the BAR operates and "polices" lawyers and judges.

A parallel example would be if somehow our legislatures were taken over by Russians. And then those Russians wrote all the laws in Russian. This would require mugs to hire a Russian to deal with and translate any legal matter, neh?

Nice rackett isn't it? I REALLY dislike our court system. But being what it is, if I have to deal with it, I want the ugliest, meanest, dirtiest SOB lawyer I can get.

It will also be what we believe is a first-of-its-kind policy statement for our expectations of what gun manufacturers owe the American people when it comes to their safety and the safety of their loved ones. Jersey City will be asking all bidders the following six socially responsible questions: - What do you do to combat illegal gun trafficking and illegal gun crime? - Do you manufacturer and sell assault weapons for civilian use? - Do you agree not to sell certain models of firearms for civilian use? - Are you requiring your dealers to conduct background checks? - Do you fund research related to gun violence and smart gun technology? - Will you commit to prohibiting your brand name from being used in violent video games? -Does your unicorn shit turds of peace for the children. -

Good analogy.

I've been an observer in courtrooms many many times, and one of the fascinating things to watch is the difference between a person who stands before a judge, both of whom allegedly speak English, and a person who stands NEXT TO A LAWYER in front of a judge.

If the poor bastage stands there and says "your honor, I didn't do it," it's like the judge doesn't understand the words coming out of his mouth.  But if the guy's lawyer says "your honor, my client didn't do it," suddenly all sorts of things start to happen,  in favor of said poor bastage standing in front  of the judge.

It's amazing to watch, when it's not you who is being stared down by the cold  eyes  of "justice."

The left undermines a sound economy and is waging a neo-religious holy war on industry the GOP does nothing.

If we are to be entangled in foreign affairs I would prefer that my values and American economic necessities be aided the left wants to help radical muslims for "fairness" the GOP in fact does not do nothing which would be bad enough but in fact cheers Ogabe's foreign policy "genius."

Both the Democrat and Republican parties know that exposing Obama would reveal their dereliction of duty, their complicity in undermining the Constitution, and their continuous flouting of the rule of law. They know that the truth would topple the corrupt status quo and terminate their exclusive grip on political power, allowing the American people to regain control of their government. The political and media elite will do anything to prevent that." http://tinyurl.com/pz7obdz

I assumed the western part of the State was more conservative because it was away from the coast. Isn't the coast where all the big urban areas are?

386 You know, rather than nationalizing the legal profession here is what I would prefer:

1. Forbid anyone who has a JD from serving in any legislative capacity.

2. Eliminate lawyers for "tort" law, except in the case of written contracts.

3. Forbid the government at any level from invoking civil tort law for anything other than written contracts with their suppliers/vendors/contractors.

All to incorporated into a Constitutional Amendment.

I don't see any reason why GOP Senators should vote for this budget deal.  They were not part of making the deal and they have no reason to trust Patty Murray on anything.  McConnell was the architect of the sequester and I don't blame him one bit for voting against a deal that kills it.  His opposition is about that and not really about having a primary opponent who is losing to him 3-1 in the polls.

Rubio is trying to win back some cred with the Tea Party fiscal conservatives.  Good for him.

He plead guilty to avoid bankrupting his family. He said that Federal Prosecutors told him that they needed a conviction to serve as an example, and that they would keep filing charges against him till they bankrupted him and he could no longer fight them. They told him take the deal they were offering or they would destroy him financially. He said that if he had fought them, it would have cost him his life's savings, his pension and his house, and would have left him unable to support his family, so he took the deal.

400 Seriously, what would be ideal would be for all the Senate Republicans to vote against this budget deal.  I saw ion another article that Harry Reid is already negging some repub;icans to vote for it.  No wonder, and they should take that as their signal not to vote for it.  It will pass anyway, but Reps should make all those Red State Dems have to vote for it, and also make the uber-liberals vote for ending extended unemployment benefits.  (Ahem, Al Franken anyone?) This deal is then more likely to generate a civil war on the Left than it will on the Right.

402 So here's some questions I've got. The leadership claims that they had to pass this crap budget so they could keep the focus on Obamacare. Couldn't they have just offered a budget the Dems love in exchange for repeal of Obamacare then go home? Wouldn't that keep the focus on Obamacare far more than simply going along with the Dems on every other issue? I get that they are desperately afraid of bad press over a shutdown again, but wouldn't it have more teeth this time around now that the public is far more aware of the emfuckening that is coming their way? Seems to me like that's the winning political move, keeping the pressure on the donks to get rid of Obamacare, but it seems the leadership is convinced that the only winning move is to give in to the Dems on everything. Of course, I'm well aware that the GOP leadership has no interest in winning, the last time they had nything resembling a victory was 2004, and that was owed more to al-Qaeda than anything coming out of the GOP leadership.

408 @392 That is certainly an interesting take. Without the Bolsheviks, would Hitler have had a box to stand on? Your typical LIV German, Josef Lunchbox, equated Marxism with Judaism. How do you account the Separate Peace (sorry, new meme, "Piece"?)

Two czars earlier, there was a liberalish one who "allowed" all sorts of counter-administration activity. The Revolutionaries learned from that mistake. Add in the 1905 round, and that makes about 3 wars we'll have to re-fight on ONT before you even get to WWII. Hmm.

That's doing some serious fracturing of history where you're assuming some things would have remained static in a dynamic environment.  Usually it's the left that does that.  Just for starters, there probably wouldn't have been a Molotov Ribbentrop Pact which would have meant fighting a two front war almost immediately.

I'm not saying you're wrong because I don't know how things would've shaken out ultimately.  What I am saying is that a Revolution which killed at least 100 million people shouldn't be thought of as a good thing.
